Captain Earth – 08 & 09
Pitz-“You are all my slaves! Muhahahahah!”
Welcome back to more Captain Earth! These two episodes are basically character introductions to Zin and Ai the newest planetary gears to join Amarok and Moco which means things might get intense for Daichi and the others.
——————————————
Time for the Midsummer’s Knights to start going out on missions and such. Along the way, looks like we’re gonna be introduced to some new people that Moco and Amarok will bring their memories back of a life they once lived before they dealed in a casino or sung poppy tunes.
—————————————–
I’m very happy to be part of the podcast. Captain Earth has been my go to Saturday show for the past month or more. Thanks guy, it was fun being part of the ‘cast!

Akari a best!

I’ve got to go with Skylion on this one. Hana may have been designed for her ero-appeal, but Akari’s sheer spunky energy gives her so much life that my eyes can’t help but be drawn to her in any of these images.

I’m usually of the “tan girls are best girls” camp, but yeah, thirded on Akari.

That’s just what Hana has been this whole time: eye candy. I’d say that’s her only appeal. Other than translating Pitz’s predictions, she’s like cardboard, with little personality and doesn’t have much of a presence. Those poor qualities are why Akari is easily stealing the spotlight in the show’s female factor. I hope that changes in some way.

Nice pictures, BUT the newtype picture of Akari, Those seem a bit too fancy for her, maybe Hana picked them for her… but hey im not really complaining.

did you have any doubt? The opening was enough for me to be put on “Autopilot best girl” not to mention that voice actress! Anyways.. Agree
Akari a Best!

I seriously don’t know why I’m still watching this show. I guess it’s for the distant hope that maybe, one day something of substance will actually happen in the show. It had a promising start but that faded away into nothing and now, I really feel this show floundering.
I kid you not, but I have been so bored that I’ve literally just been skimming the last 3 or 4 episodes looking for something interesting, and have found next to nothing. The only reason that I’ve stayed with this is because I want to see the aliens’ endgame, but even that’s becoming a flimsy excuse. The episodes are essentially the same thing over and over again in a ridiculous cycle of aliens find new member, Pitz foresees them, the kids and aliens battle, Akari pulls some magic hacker crap, aliens lose to fight again another day. Rinse and Repeat.
I find all the characters bland now, even Teppei, who had such potential. Akari, I seriously want to die off since all she serves is as a walking Deus Ex Machina for the group to save the day every time they are in trouble. I want something to really shake up this monotony. Have the kiltagang win sometimes and have hundreds of people die, have one of the main 4 get killed, or the Globe base blow up and kill some supporting characters. Do something! Give me some feeling of trepidation or urgency here! Make me care! This show had such promise and started out as one of the favorites of the season, but I think this is another case of really lost potential.

I’m not being critical of what you wrote, but I must ask… why are you still watching? I feel like anybody not digging the show the past few weeks that have their own kind of hopes for Captain Earth won’t find much materialize for them; or even in your case of wanting to see the endgame, might not find it satisfying or good enough to redeem the shortcomings you think the series has. Just a thought, that’s all.
I think of the things you’re asking for the series to do, Captain Earth is a tad young (as of eps. 8-9) to be pulling off an event that shakes Globe’s very core as those ideas seem more like midpoint cliffhangers.

It’s just how I feel I guess. It’s like every time I say, “I’m done.” Something comes in for a few seconds and catches my interest and I stay to the next episode just to see where this new piece goes. However, you’re right, I usually get disappointed in the end.
For example, the whole conspiracy with CEO Kube and all the different factions trying to undermine each other really carried my interest, but then that really went nowhere. Then they pulled me back in with beginning to introduce more bad guys, and I want to see who these new Planetary Gears would figure into the story, but then they began to just get repetitive, almost Team Rocket style and I again lost interest and patience. But then, in the latest episode they’ve introduced this new psychologist lady and I want to see what’s her deal. Sigh.
This show really reminds me of Eureka 7, another show that I just couldn’t get into. I was introduced to it by a friend who praised it for how amazing it was. However, when I started watching it, I was bored to tears. He kept telling me to keep with it and that the show just started really slow, but I gave up somewhere around episode 8 or 9. With Captain Earth, I want to see if I can hold out and that maybe the second half will be better, since I see the potential here, I’m just waiting for them to utilize it.
Maybe I’m hopeless, but I’ll stay…at least to the end of this season. I’m already 10 episodes in, I might as well stay for 2-3 more. 😛

I don’t think you are alone in that camp Irenesharda! I think there are a lot of people that want to see Captain Earth succeed and I know a lot probably want to see it crash and burn! Personally I want it to succeed and prove the haters of Bones that they can handle a mecha series! Yeah we all know Eureka Seven AO failed and the final episodes of Stardriver bombed, but I have faith things will be fine and just like Jrow said this series is still a tad young since we are only in episode nine out of twenty-four so there is plenty of room for growth.
Noooooooooooooo! Akari is LOVE but I will agree we need a moment where some of the characters are killed off or badly injured to put the fear into the plot that the Planetary Gears are not messing around! That much NEEDS to happen and maybe after the last few character introductions we will get that.
That and you made it this far might as well see it through til the end right? I hope you do!
POWUH: and Athenaeum Châtelaine with 2212 comments
I’d like Akari more if she wasn’t such a “get out of jail free” card all the time. I like her characterization a lot, but 85% of the time, they get out of pretty much anything by her amazing ridiculous hacking skills, and it really takes the tension out a show that has already been drained drastically of it to begin with.
Hopefully, they improve and fast. I’ll stay at least to the end of this first half, hopefully they really pick up this plot.
POWUH: Meta Team and PreCure Mastah with 9203 comments
True you have a valid point that 85% of the time the problem seems to fall back on Akari to save the day with her hacking skills.
Yeah I have high hopes that the second half will do something great! We just have to wait sadly…
POWUH: and Vampire Lover with 11746 comments
That foolish hope is what keeps us going. I stuck with shows like Mushibugyou and they turned out great in the long run. A hit and miss subject because some time investments are worth it and some not. By comparison, I’m liking Captain Earth more than Eureka Seven AO because the former’s story so far is straightforward and isn’t convoluted and all over the place like the latter which there was a lot of trouble trying to make sense of what was going on. As in the continuous time travelling and space alterations made everything so disjointed, I often felt lost right when an episode was in the middle of playing on my screen. A lot of plot holes so it was hard like it as a whole. So yeah, AO sadly was a failure.

I think they might be pushing the “search for Planetary Gears” thing a little much lately, I mean, 2 episodes in a row (and now 3) of ‘find a random person and try to stop them from becoming a Planetary Gear’. And you guys know you can get the train ready to launch Daichi BEFORE you get the alert? I mean, you have 3 minutes something, and you’re wasting 30 seconds or more on it having the launcher spin around, elevate, extend, and launch? I mean, sheesh.
I think one corner the show has painted itself into is the “If even one kiltgang reaches the Earth, it’s super catastrophic.” So there’s really this binary condition: We win, or it’s all over. While that may generate tension for a while, it also limits what they can do with the story, and ends up making it repetitive, because they can’t have any intermediate wins or losses.
POWUH: and Athenaeum Châtelaine with 2212 comments
Exactly, that’s really been my problem as well. While the search for the other Planetary Gears sounded interesting at first, it became very repetitive as each episode just played out the same way.
I too am getting tired of all the transformations including the one on the train. I’ve never been a fan of those sequences. The first few times is nice to see, but after awhile you realize how much time this is actually taking.
The corner you’re talking about that they’ve painted themselves in, is the one that I feel is giving the show the most problems. Because the plot says the bad guys can never win, you feel no danger, and that will eventually lead to you asking what’s the point to all of this then?
The bad guys attack, the good guys stop them, rinse and repeat every episode. The bad guys can’t advance as characters and really the good guys can’t either. It’s like they’re caught in a cycle. I think either the Planetary Gears need to find another method of achieving their goals and use more stealth than constantly charging at their foes, or else have the good guys fail and let them grow as they have to face the calamity of half the Earth being destroyed.
Honestly, I have no problem with the Planetary Gears winning once. Even as blah a show as Gundam Seed Destiny was, it wasn’t afraid to plow a gigantic piece of space debris into the Earth and kill millions. I think if Captain Earth is willing to give the Planetary Gears a victory and let us see what they can really do (and not some cautionary look at a beat up moon either), I really think this show can pick up a lot.
POWUH: Meta Team and Spammy Tamer with 7115 comments
I don’t mind the transformations themselves, I’ve come to accept them as part of the show (just like they were with Star Driver or any Magical Girl show). I was more complaining about them waiting until after they found out about the bad guy launch to do their own launch, or at least the setup part.
POWUH: Meta Team and PreCure Mastah with 9203 comments
True it wouldn’t hurt this series to have it stop with Ai and Zin as the extra planetary gears instead of going as far as three episodes!
I feel you on that! I think some of the planetary gears SHOULD win some I mean have them invade a small country and SHOW us what they would actually do! We need some kind of threat to put the fear in these characters.
POWUH: and Vampire Lover with 11746 comments
Kudos to Akari catching the enemy in a vice. Besides Daichi, she’s become Globe’s core, therefore, a serious blow to them if she’s out of the picture or being used against so going after her was a smart move on their part. Too bad their plan blew up in their face. A nuclear strike devastating everything would regulate no spoils for either side. In other words, it’s saying “If I lose, you lose” making all the waiting and planning to use humanity like cattle go in vain. Their downfall was not monitoring her hacking. At least have one of them sitting beside her to keep tabs.
The series has declined into a mundane routine with somewhat predictable outcomes but I’m still hopeful for a good turnabout since we’re not halfway through yet. Teppei was interesting at first until that aspect began going to waste with his constant moping. Like, can’t he for once look on the brighter side of things? Similar characters made their peace and were ready to face whatever was coming at them. Kind of annoying a seiyuu like Hiroshi Kamiya has to voice him if he stays like that.
In my opinion, the search for other Planetary Gears isn’t going to last much longer. Well, at least for the show’s sake. Take into consideration the hint shown in the OP. When Moco kissed the Ai, before she awoke, that yellow Ego box started up. In the OP, I counted five Ego boxes: White (Teppei), pink (Moco), yellow (Ai), green and blue (Amara). Or maybe the colors register to different classes.
Episode 9 was more into my liking after Akari being badass, not giving into emotion and owning the bad guys when they thought victory was finally on their side. Plus, there’s Ai who looks like she could go mental at any time which is intriguing because I kind of have a thing for yanderes. And her answer to Moco asking how it feels to be awake put a smile on my face. “I’ll take away your happiness like a vampire”.
POWUH: and Athenaeum Châtelaine with 2212 comments
I knew the vampire line would grab you. 😛
I like all the Planetary Gears so far and I feel that they would really be fearsome foes if only they were really given something to do. I mean, you have an enemy that’s lived among humanity and knows their ways. Also, they’ve all been wronged by some element of humanity is some sort of way. There’s great potential for motive there. They are immortal and have awesome powers. Yet, they’ve just made them cookie-cutter, evil laugh villains thus far. I really want them to live up to the potential that the story sets up.
What would really be awesome is if Teppei went back to being a Planetary Gear, which would bring awesome conflict for both sides of the battle. I really though they would go that way eventually before he destroyed his Ego box and became a Neoteny. Yet…could he become a dark Neoteny? And have him and Daichi against each other like the Kira and Athrun friends turned enemies sort of plot twist?
That would be sooo awesome, and would really give Teppei something to do beyond being the mopey second fiddle to Daichi.
POWUH: Meta Team and PreCure Mastah with 9203 comments
Hell ya BB! Akari held her own against Moco and Amarock instead of freaking out she remained calm and played them quite well.
After the last planetary gear gets introduced hopefully the tone can shift into more serious things and speaking of Teppei yeah I agree he has been boring and dull lately and I hope something changes soon for him.
There is another planetary gear with a top hat in the OP which I am assuming is probably puck in humanoid form, but I don’t know how true that is because GLOBE said there were three girls and two guys? I guess we shall see…
Nine was good! Eight was kinda boring for me xD
