Bokura wa Minna Kawaisou – 03

Ladies Wrestling on Kawaisou! All Weekend Long!

While Kawaisou may not be the stunning show of the season (so far that’s gotta go to Soredemo Sekai wa Utsukushii I think) it’s definitely a nice time to spend. So what happened with these pitiful people this week?

Sayaka in Full Force

Bokura wa Minna Kawaisou-Whoever's convenient

She doesn’t really care about the collateral damage, does she?

So after Sayaka’s brief introduction last week, we get more of the full experience of how she is. Mercilessly teasing Mayumi about her breakups and her size and, well, everything. And we see a bit of her vixen routine, when she uses Usa as a shield to try to deflect an irate not-boyfriend. I mean, it’s like she ever SAID that he was her boyfriend, and it’s not HER fault if they don’t understand her saying no while continuing to act ‘yes’. And her cutesy act of hiding behind Usa and mumbling and saying things that are bound to misunderstood doesn’t make the other guy think he’s been dumped for Usa, not at all. Except it totally does. And she knows it, because she totally acknowledges throwing Usa under the bus. Thankfully, he’s first saved by Ritsu, who hits the guy with a book “because he’s in the way”, and then by Shiro, who helpfully brings a policeman with him. But I think that Usa’s finally free of the possibility that he’ll fall for Sayaka’s charms after seeing how she really is.

Which do you think is the real Sayaka

I Only Have Eyes For You

Bokura wa Minna Kawaisou-Usa embarasses Ritsu

These two can’t quite get on the same page at the same time

Not that we really had anything to worry about in that department, since Usa’s eyes are firmly fixed on Ritsu. He’s trying to continually deny it, though. I don’t know if he wants to admit it to himself, if he thinks it’ll be easier to keep saying that he just wants to be nice to her, or a friend for her, or help her not be scared. Or if he’s continually denying it because if he admits it to himself, the rest of the Kawaisou residents might figure it out (like they totally haven’t yet).

Complete and utter rejection

And it feels like Ritsu is having the same internal battle. She’s definitely opening up to Usa more, but when she needs to talk to him, she does it on her own turf: in the library (did she know that he was on library duty that day?). And she does apologize for telling him she’d never do something like ride on his bike, but explains it as she prefers to read while walking and also doesn’t want the rest of everyone to think that she likes him… although it seems like she is enjoying his company more, at least as much as anyone else. And she even takes umbrage to the rest of the residents hassling Usa, threatening to use her influence as the owner’s daughter to raise their rent. Still Sayaka can’t resist meddling with the two of them, trying to get Usa more interested in Ritsu using her cutesy manners.

Maybe Mayumi’s Learning

Bokura wa Minna Kawaisou-Mayumi gets dolled up

Mayumi wins for ‘cleans up the best’

I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the other part of the show, which was the care that everyone’s taking for Mayumi, and trying to help her break out of her pattern of bad boyfriends. This time she’s stuck on a guy she dumped for multi-timing her. She tries to play it off as the guy being desperate, but in reality she likes the attention, which is the reason she gets with these guys in the first place. And she’s locked into the trajectory to get her heart broken again by this guy’s philandering… but for her friends at Kawaisou, who plant the ideas about her own happiness in her head before her date. Armed with that, she is able to see through the guy’s advances during dinner, find the annoyances that drove them apart in the first place, and not make the same mistakes again. I guess even if she’s not going to end up with Usa, having everyone care for her like that and help make her life better is a good step.

Another fun episode, and they break up the show into different vignettes well, with a good flow between the different sections. They’re also doing a great job making Kawaisou be a place where people do care for each other, even if everyone’s messed up. So far, Sayaka seems to be getting the worst end of everything, but she’s also the one who gets more people in trouble. Meanwhile, Ritsu and Usa seem to still be making progress (I’ll probably say this every week, since that’s the point of the show, isn’t it), but I don’t know if they’ll get all the way to being a couple by the end.

Ah, a very endearing episode. And it is as you say, Sordedemo Sekai is stealing all the Sun, but that doesn’t make Kawaisou any less appealing.

Seems like everyone wants attention. It’s the fumbling about that makes the story thou. We can’t have, “they meet, they fall in love, and it’s all perfect, the end.” cause that’s just boring.

Yeah, they’ve got that extended family thing down pat.

Sometimes extended family is good, sometimes it’s bad. So I tend to shy away from using ‘family’ as a description with assumed good connotations. To me, friends are more important, even if those friends happen to be your relatives. Friends are people you choose to be with, rather than people with whom you share a coincidence completely beyond your control. Therefore I don’t put a lot of stock in ‘family’, because I’ve seen too many people do really shitty things to their family members with the expectation of some sort of forgiveness. And I’ve seen too many other people *give* that forgiveness to thoroughly undeserving people simply because of an accident of birth. So ‘family’ doesn’t hold much truck with me.

These people are friends, whether they piss each other off or not.

      • HannoX says:

Yes. You can choose your friends but you’re stuck with your family. Despite the cynicism of that remark, I’m lucky to have a good family. Many are not.

I was happy to see Mayumi not fall for that jerk again, but I have a feeling she’s going to get another boyfriend who’s just as bad. After all, her character trait is the woman who has rotten taste in boyfriends. Perhaps part of her problem is that the size of her bust attracts men more interested in her boobs than in her as a person.

But I do hope before the end of the series she learns not to fall for jerks. And maybe, just maybe, she gets a good boyfriend before the end. She deserves one.

    • Highway says:

I think she does too. Mayumi really seems to be a nice lady, even if she’s a little arch in picking on Usa. I do wonder if there’s a reason she’s so weak to jerks. It seems she likes the attention, but everyone does. Maybe this is a herald of a new ability to see through the smooth talking.

’m finding Kawaiso moderately enjoyable for now but I just hope it’ll go somewhere and not stagnate. This might be one of those series that I’ll drop about half-way in if I don’t detect much progress. At the same time, some shows make it hard to do so,leaving you with no other option to see them through. Anyway,we’ll see.
