First Impressions – Space Dandy

Boobies in space!!!

Welcome to the next Metanorn Mini-talk! After a few days we finally got together to breakdown this oddball anime and yes our first episode might sound a bit bad but I hope you enjoy listening to us talk.

———————————————–

Like the guys said, this is really not our best audio offering but we hope you would bear with us. Same for myself as I was still battling through my flu so I really don’t sound like myself either. However, we had fun while breaking down this space adventure of boobies and DAT ASS. I mean really, who cares that by the end, everyone simply destroyed each other?!

————————————————

While the others will welcome you to this post, I’ll take this moment to apologize for the average audio quality from our first mini-talk here. I was using a Nexus 7 to connect to Skype, and I, like a dumb dumb, was messing with the headphone cord. Sometimes things happen, like a polar vortex. Anyway, here’s some pics and we’ll be back with me recording at the usual good quality we’re used to. Boobies~

…….Whathisname on the Space Dandy banner is doing his best job at making me want to punch him Touma style ̄Д ̄‎ Am I the only one?

I didn’t even think this show would be for me, nothing it showed is what I usually watch, and so I wasn’t even going to watch much less having any expectations. However, after hearing all the hype, I decided to check it out. And I had a pretty good time!

Of course, being a woman the fanservice was ridiculous and had no meaning for me, but even then there were a few gags like the girls being strapped to the blow up alien that were funny. I like the whole breaking of the 4th wall, the comedy was also pretty funny as well with all the references and in-jokes. The whole “thumbs up” Terminator 2 parody scene was a good example, or the dub’s inclusion of the famous Buzz Lightyear line “infinity…and beyond”. QT was cute and Meow had funny dead pan humor. It’s the sort of show just to watch for laughs and if you have no expectations going in like I had, you’ll find yourself pleasantly surprised.

I will be keeping to the dub since some of the jokes they use are pretty funny, and it’s a very good dub which is a plus for me.

Back in college, all me mates and I agreed to visit every single bowling alley in the Greater Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky area. That was a lot of fun. I still suck at bowling. What that has to do with Space Dandy, I don’t know.

As a premier, this was OK. With all the hype, I expected a bit more. I’m not a big Watanabe fan (was more a fan of the soundtracks then the story for Bebop…and thought SamCham was miles better), but I recognize the talent, and how he can gather great animators and musicians around him.

This felt more like a thesis statement for a show than a premise for a show. I feel like the real stuff is supposed to come later. That’s like a lot of shows, almost all first episodes, but this one more so. I don’t expect too much from them, but just to blow up? I went more, “huh”, than anything else.

I tried out both the dub and sub. I prefer subs, but was going to give the Toonami slot a try. Vogon Poetry being read at me…….

I went away to soon. Great animators doing great animation is good and all, but there has to be more to it. As far as the world wide influence, I guess slapstick and derp is universal?

I guess I have the minority opinion. I found it mildly amusing, but that’s about it. I thought the art was wild and enjoyed it, especially the aliens at Boobies. However, with so many shows this season wild art alone isn’t enough to sell me on a series. I’ll watch one more episode to give it another chance, but that’s liable to be it.

    What is a space dandy?
    A dandy in space.

      No shit, Sherlock.

That’s what I said when I heard that.

      • skylion says:

Don’t you wish Martin Freeman could turn to Benedict Cumberbatch and say that?

        • Irenesharda says:

Freeman just got finished having the crap scared out of him by Cumberbatch in the Hobbit 2, I think he might think twice before mouthing off at him like that. 😛

(Psst…How excited are you for Sherlock Season (Series) 3? 😀 )

          • skylion says:

I have already watched the first two outings of Sherlock 3rd Season, and am quite impressed and happy with the outcome…which leads us back to your first comment. John has the standing to kick Sherlock’s ass….

            • Irenesharda says:

Haven’t watched it at all yet, I will probably watch when it premieres on PBS. But it’s been so long and I’m excited!
And I always admire a man’s brains more than his brawn, so Sherlock will always come out on top for me. 😉

            • skylion says:

              But those cheekbones…..

            • Kyokai says:

Stop taking it so seriously. He’s supposed to be made fun of. 😛

  6. Liza says:

    This anime.

Definitely one that I will be turning off my brain for but it looks like a ton of fun so I don’t even mind! 😀

  7. Overcooled says:

You guys are making me kind of curious about the dub now. I might give it a listen just for comparison =w=

Oh mannnn I really love Space Dandy. It’s just made to be fun, kind of like sugary cereal. There’s no nutrition, just tons of sugar and bright colours. But that’s what makes it so great! It completely blows off an intergalactic war in order to follow Dandy on his adventure to “Boobies.” Truly a masterpiece.

  8. BlackBriar says:

Space Dandy is alright for a comedy. It doesn’t take itself seriously, that’s for sure. For the first episode, it gets an average passing grade. I’d like to see how it will go when Toonami handles its dubbed simulcast of the show and wonder who’s voicing the characters. And it’s a good thing it’s airing on Adult Swim’s time because the series definitely isn’t family friendly.

  9. akagami says:

I feel this show tries too hard. Like it wants to be a funny version of Cowboy Bebop. Except it’s not and they don’t belong in the same sentence.

I found the fanservice to be a turn-off and the whole thing to be silly. Granted it has good animation (the whole planet fight was done very well; but that’s not enough for me to continue watching a show, i need more substance)… ok, I lied. I watched 5cm only for the eyeporn. But it was very excellent eyeporn.

  10. drollord says:

show tries too hard to incorporate various other likeable anime series without original characters into one show though the set and setting is frickin awesome….watched parts of various episodes though have not gotten hooked…sad, but due to some of the obvious pandering it is to be expected….i had such high hopes for this anime after seeing the previews =-/….dunno….maybe it will get better or ill try watching it agian in a few years…

  11. someone says:

I was pretty disappointed, frankly. This show is hardly more than fanservice and the characters are tired stereotypes. Even the plot is basically just a bunch of bad (and let’s be honest: sexist) tropes strung together. Like others have said, I’ll give it another episode to see if it does anything interesting but so far: meh.
