Diabolik Lovers – 06

“It’s the perfect chance to escape, but I’m going to sit here and stare at a picture instead.”

Something’s wrong with me. I’m suddenly feeling extreme nostalgia for the Brothers Conflict anime (which if you missed my posts about it, was pretty bad and not something to feel nostalgia over). I haven’t even started Brilliant Blue yet (…I haven’t even unwrapped it), but maybe this is a sign to finally finish the second half of that game post.

OH LOOK, MORE KANATO. Yep. This scene is pretty much how I remember it, minus the fact that I vaguely remember Yui actually kissing him (and the stuff that came afterwards, which was loosely based on a completely different event). Ayato came back this episode too, but there seems to be something off about him for whatever reason. I hope they go into that, since I can’t remember any instance of Ayato acting like this ever. It certainly seems like they’re favouring Kanato over the other characters. Maybe it’s because Kanato is one of the more complex characters, due to his mood swings and such. He has the mentality of a child (since he carries around Teddy, and does things like ask Yui if she hates him), but at the same time, doesn’t. It’s hard to tell when he’s showing genuine affection due to his personality, and even more so with his unhealthy fascination with death. Though taking what Laito said about death being the highest form of declaring your love (in the vampire world), maybe it isn’t so confusing. Kanato’s a bit worse than the others with his “let’s kill you, it will be the best thing ever” way of thinking though.

Also, in case you weren’t aware of this fact: Kaji Yuki is really good at singing. …Okay, I couldn’t resist adding that one. Have a (slightly) more serious example.

Subaru finally had interaction with Yui, and right away, you can see why he’s the ‘best’ brother of them all. There was no blood drinking or anything. Just a warning and providing an opportunity to escape. And even when Yui was too stubborn to run away, he left her a knife. Though maybe a lot of that has to do with his mother, who Yui apparently reminds him of. His mother seems to have been rather miserable as well, and even desperate enough to shove the task on Subaru when he was a child (though if I remember correctly, he didn’t actually do kill her). Why she didn’t just kill herself with said knife is definitely questionable though. Maybe, it has to do with murdering each other being an expression of love again.

All of the vampires have a screwy opinion on life and death in the first place, since they’re all immortal (in the sense that they stop aging eventually; they can still be killed, as explained in the episode). While they have a sense of loss when someone dies, there’s also a sense of romanticism (I guess). I can’t say that I really understand the philosophy myself, but this just seems like another place for people to take a step back and realize just how screwed up these characters are.

Come on, Yui. Stab him. You know you want to.

Yui’s uh, poor life choices are becoming more and more apparent. After seeing that some of the brides before her (and look at how many there are) have all been killed/ turned into wax dolls, and she STILL refuses to leave the household. Sure, the story couldn’t really progress with her going “screw this, I’m out of here”, leaving and forgetting everything she went through here, but come on. Her whole goal here seems to be to find out the truth behind her father abandoning her at this terrible place, but…to state the obvious: what’s happened has already happened. He pretty much abandoned you there, Yui. Forget about him and the church already. Her unwavering faith makes her interesting to the brothers (or at least, definitely to Laito), but this is kind of painful to watch.

I finally noticed the soundtrack this episode. I really liked the one from the game, and even though the composers are different, I rather like the anime’s OST as well. As for Yui, she seems to be resisting the do-M path as hard as she can. She didn’t run away when given the perfect opportunity, but she’s still resisting pretty hard with all of the brothers. I have to wonder if she’s going to go do-M at all, after that speech with Laito. Though maybe once she finally realizes that she was indeed abandoned and her faith is misplaced, maybe something will change with her character. It’s interesting how they’ve managed to make a plot out of what the game provided. I wasn’t convinced that they could really do it at the beginning, but it’s working out rather well here.

The preview looks surprisingly free of the Sakamaki brothers, so I guess the plot will be moving somewhere .

It’s been a good week. The reasons for being so are that there was an awesome episode of Strike the Blood and that this episode of Diabolik Lovers was tame compared to the others, which is seriously saying something.

For the appearances of the Sakamaki brothers, Kanato is dominating. The others are hardly seen, not that the fact bothers me in the least. If there has to be a character that’s fairly alright to tolerate, it would be him and that he brings some twisted humor in tow. Second one would maybe be Laito. The more he’s shown, the screwed up he appears to be. The show does well in the horror aspect of the story because the secret room scene with the life size dolls was creepy. More so thanks to the fact they’re all the previous brides. I had some serious “House of Wax” vibes from that.

Compared to his brothers, Subaru actually seems civil which is a surprise and serious whiplash if you recall from the first episode where he, himself, said “Just tell her that if she leaves, she’s dead”. And here he is casually telling Yui she has a chance of escaping. Not to mention it’s like he’s saying it with no ulterior motive.

Yui, our innocent, naïve and aspiring masochist, better hope she knows what she’s doing. A clear chance for freedom and she risks it all for curiosity that doesn’t seem worth it. Anyone else would’ve high tailed it out of there in a heartbeat. No one’s probably told her that “Curiosity killed the cat”.

Strike the Blood was pretty epic, I’ll admit. Or at least ship-wise.

Well, Ayato was there this episode. Hell if we’ve seen Shu, though he’s probably off sleeping somewhere. Reiji probably just doesn’t care and Subaru’s always been off doing his own thing. Really, the ones that would follow Yui around are the triplets, and that’s who we’ve seen the most of.

Well, Yui is pretty dead if she stays too (or maybe not), but leaving certainly wouldn’t hurt. Though if she did get away, where would she go? And if she did get away, would the brothers follow her (well, Richter would, but that’s a whole other story).

Yes Kaji Yuuki is awesome <3 lol
Remember "Circle of friends" from Tatara Totsuka?? 😀
    love that song!!

    • BlackBriar says:

I nearly forgot that Yuuki Kaji played that character in [K]. I don’t know about his singing but he sure has a good voice range.

    • japaninspired says:

I love that song too. It’s so soft 🙂

    • Karakuri says:

I totally forgot about that too. But yeah, Kaji has a voice that goes with a lot of genres~.

      • d-LaN says:

You guys keep saying that but I keep finding Kaji voice in BroCon/Valvrave/AW/GC to be a variation of his whiny voice. Though Kaji sounds pretty crazy in Valvrave and here.

        • BlackBriar says:

But at least he hasn’t played any extremely whiny and annoying characters so far this year. Shingeki no Kyojin’s Eren Jaeger, Hentai Ouji to Warawanai Neko’s Yōto Yokodera, Kakumeiki Valvrave’s Q-vier, Diabolik Lovers’ Kanato Sakamaki, High School DxD New’s Issei Hyoudou, Blood Lad’s Knell Hydra, Magi’s Alibaba and Yozakura Quartet: Hana no Uta’s Akina Hiizumi. He’s been on a good roll lately.

          • d-LaN says:

Oops I keep forgot tht Kaji is almost everywhere nowadays XD He’s doing Akina Hiozumi voice? Dang didn’t realize this. So yes, he have a good range I agree.

And for some reason his whiny voice suts comedic character like Yokodera SO WELL.

            • Karakuri says:

Oh, I meant his voice works with a lot of song genres. xD But yeah, he is all over the place.

  3. japaninspired says:

It was such a surprise to hear Kaji-san singing Scarborough fair. It was beautiful! I was so disappointed when the game didnt include this, it was just an amazingly beautiful soundtrack but without a voice.
I bet nobody can guess how much times I replayed this part with him singing. Are you going to Scarborough fair…parsley, sage, rosemary and time…

This was not that bad. It’s more plot, but still, it’s so sad that Diabolik Lovers is only given 12 episodes. Do all otoge adaptations get only 12 episodes? La corda had…26? If this got atleast 20 episodes, it would be great.

But it was sad that Subaru is almost forgoten. His route was not that bad,
some things were too silly though. But really, he just gave Yui the knife and all?

Cant believe we’re already half through the anime. Everyone should reward
themselves with a cookie or something 🙂

    • japaninspired says:

Oh come on! I cant believe my phone doesnt know the word “thyme”, and automatically corrected it to “time”, lol.

    • Karakuri says:

Ahaha funny you mention that. I just bought the soundtrack~. I really love the music… But yeah, I wish there was a long version of Scarborough Fair with Kaji’s voice.

Hmm… yeah, La Corda is the only otoge anime that I can think of that has 20+ episodes. Plus those OVAs… UtaPri was kind of longer with it’s two seasons, and I guess Hiiro no Kakera was kind of 20+ episodes, with the season split in-between.

Well, maybe he’ll play a bigger part later. …Or not, since we have to get through all of the Cordelia stuff.

Yay for sitting though all of the abuse! …Though really, this is nowhere as bad as the game, as I’m sure you’re well aware xD

      • d-LaN says:

Just curious, how well dd those 20+ episode otoge anime cover the routes?

        • Karakuri says:

I.. honestly couldn’t tell you. I never played La Corda due to the fact that it’s old and I watched it before I got into otome games. I had to stop playing Hiiro because that thing was LOOOOOONG. 4 hours of gameplay in, and I was only as far as the events of episode 2 of the anime. OTL

          • d-LaN says:

Is Hiiro Umineko/Nasu long or just slightly longer than your usual otoge? Wait, what is the length of usual otoge again?

            • Karakuri says:

Uh, I’ve never played any Nasu (minus Extra, which most of my time is dedicated to levelling up as opposed to reading) or Umineko, so I really couldn’t tell you. I think it depends on the company and the game type (like, a general route that branches off or if the routes are completely different to begin with, etc).

Brothers Conflict was super short (with maybe 3 hours per route if I got the schedule right). In general though, I find that Otomate games (or at least the historical-based ones) are super long for some reason. I went through Hakuouki in like, a week, but that’s because that one was in English, I was on reading week and I admittedly… kind of skipped a lot of the voiced lines unless I liked the actor. Plus there was a long general route and the last 2 chapters were the only ones that differed, so I could speed through the game after that.

I’m sure I could have done the rest of the routes in Hiiro super quickly once I had one out of the way, since I think that game had the same formula. I assume it would have taken me at least 15 hours to get through a route in Hiiro first though.

But, uh, to actually answer your question, it generally takes less than 10 hours for an entire route. Maybe like, 5-7? Though I don’t really time myself unless the game says how many hours you’ve put into it somewhere.

      • Japaninspired says:

I love the music too! And probably Scarborough Fair is my most favorite track. Well, maybe also Shuu’s tune, since it has a violin in it ^^ and it kind of blends well.
You know, maybe the anime soundtrack will have a scarborough fair track with Kaji-san’s voice? That would be awesome! I would buy it without thinking.

Oh, yeah, Utapri, only that I think La Corda was less “crazy” than Utapri. If you know what I mean 😉
La Corda was actually not bad, I still think it’s a nice anime after everything that I’ve watched. And the music was lovely. AND the heroine wasnt annoying, well, I thought she wasnt annoying. 🙂 I know nothing about the game thought.

Hahaha, Yeah, I’m surely aware. I was rewarding myself everytime with much more than just a cookie. I could eat a whole bucket of icecream. lol

        • Karakuri says:

I really like The Close Door track… and Kanato’s theme. Though I’m really enjoying Reiji’s as well, since it’s a nice blend of classy and sinister~.

Oh! That would be awesome!! Now that you mention that, I really hope that happens.

…Yes, I don’t think I’ve ever played anything as… unique as UtaPri. Nah, from what I remember, I didn’t find her annoying either. Though I don’t really remember much aside from the violin player and the do-S flute guy. I know nothing about the game either, but I think I read somewhere that there’s going to be a remake or something. …So maybe I’ll look into that.

    • d-LaN says:

Do I get one for following this but putting the anime on hold? XD

I think its due to budget or timeslot issue. But yeah, it would be great if there a 20+ episode otoge anime that can cover multiple routes well.

      • Japaninspired says:

Hmm, I guess that depends on the cookie size, XD

The animation looks really really good, and if you think about the 15 min’s episode thing, so yeah, it must be because of budget. (I’ve recently started taking animation classes, 😀 so I didn’t really notice how I started to pay attention to a lot of stuff that usually didn’t bother me. minus the sound effects, I’ve always payed attention to them, but there is another reason to that I’m not picky with animation quality or anything).

Oh, you mean like Amnesia? With the “cover multiple routes”? That actually was pretty clever of them, they put quite a lot into it. And the end was clever, even thought I didn’t like it at all.
