Diabolik Lovers – 02

DiaLovers200002

Ooooof course they have a limo.

Argh, sorry for the late post. I’m drowning in episode endings between this, Free!, Genei, Rozen Maiden, Danganronpa, and maybe a few more (because I don’t know when to stop).

DiaLovers200006DiaLovers200008

Looks like Ayato is first up for vampire of the week (I assume the formula will go like that), and unsurprisingly, the ore-sama gets right to claiming Yui as his property. As you saw, he changes moods fast (from takoyaki to blood with no warning whatsoever). The pool was pretty bad (lol of course out heroine can’t swim), but I’m still waiting on Kanato to upstage that at some point. Plus I guess Ayato did go rescue her when she was drowning. Ignore the part where he just kind of drank her blood again, and it looks like he was being nice. …I wouldn’t be too worried about Yui completely missing her first day of class. She’ll be missing a lot more in the near future, either due to anemia or things like this. Hell, I don’t even know what the school is doing in the plot in the first place other than to give a sense of the character’s ages, and as an excuse for all of them to wear uniforms. It’s not like anything important actually ever happened in class (as far as I know at this point).

DiaLovers200016DiaLovers200014

Well, well. It looks like they are attempting to have a plot after all. The flashback with Ayato is pretty important, and as you may have guess from it, this series runs off the basis that every single sadist here was screwed over in their childhood. This is why they’re the lovely people they are today. Of course, this doesn’t mean that they had to stay assholes their entire lives, but after some analysis (and playing more of the game), I’ve realized that they’ve never had anyone really present to stop them. Not that they really change that much when they get er, friendlier with Yui, but everyone else in their lives have been less powerful than them, and have probably either died, or were too afraid to say anything (plus they’re even above most of their own kind, due to their parent’s aristrocratic-ish lineages). I think a big reason that Yui doesn’t die is the same reason why her blood seems so interesting to every one. …Not that anyone else has really had any, but you probably could have guessed that everyone would like her blood due to otome game cliches.

Speaking of Yui, prepare for a lot of her still interacting with the other characters, even when they treat her like this. All throughout the routes, all she really gets in return for her general concern is blood loss or being called “annoying” (… or worse), but then she continues to bother interacting with the other characters instead of ignoring them or something. And amazingly, it works. Somehow enduring all of the mistreatment, Yui manages to endear herself to the other characters. Maybe because she actually seems to care, unlike the other characters. You saw the flash of Ayato’s childhood. Though like I said in the episode before this, don’t expect the guys to change too much.

I feel like I’m talking a lot about plot circumstances and nothing about what actually happened in the episode itself, but, uh… nothing much really even happened in the episode. We were introduced to Ayato, saw how he interacts with Yui, and that’s about it for now. Maybe that bit of him drowning as a child should count for something, but that’s probably not going to be explained for a while. There wasn’t even any real interaction between the brothers (not that they really ever interact), besides Reiji lecturing Ayato. Things are just getting started though. There have been hints at the plot too, aside from just the part with Ayato’s flashback. The other guy at the very end of the episode will be important. Actually, after Kanato’s route, everything else seems so much… lighter. Not that there was anything overly dark in the episode, but the pool is hardly mean compared to Kanato’s first scene like that. Even playing the game, Laito’s route is almost boring, and he’s the one with the NTR fetish. Oh well, the next episode looks like it should involve more siblings than just Ayato. …Among other visual clues that mean that Yui just might be screwed.

DiaLovers200018

Someone should REALLY take that fork away from him.

The second episode wasn’t bad but I’m still bummed all the episodes are only 15 minutes long. Is the game that short?

I’m sure Yui wanted to believe what happened before was just a nightmare. Sorry, reality can be cruel sometimes. So far, I’m seeing similar pattern from an obvious show everyone bound to know about: vampires, night school. You know what I’m getting at… And what are the odds most of the students are also vampires?

Right of the bat, Yui is already being treated like cattle. For a moment, I thought Reiji was being nice handing out that cranberry juice but it turns out it was simply a means to clean her blood.

I had a feeling Ayato would be the one to give Yui her first vampire kiss (a term used when a vampire bites their prey) since he was the first to try and drink her blood. At first, he came off as sadistic but later on, he was more of an immature brat. That flashback of him nearly drowning indicates as much. At he was in some way nice enough to give her a towel to dry off with. Yui may be already awakening to her inner masochist. I’m not sure what I saw but it looked like she offered her neck to Ayato while still being underwater.

    • Japaninspired says:

Oh, no. I guess they didn’t mention it. The students arent vampires. Only the Sakamaki brothers are, but they keep it a secret. (Otherwise, can you imaginde what could’ve happened if a whole school of vampires would sense her?)

I have no idea why others are in a night school, thought.

I don’t think if this is a spoiler, ’cause I doubt they will show more about Ayato’s past.

Yup, the vibe is sure similar. Though the great dupe for twilight is still much better.

I didn’t even expect any kind of comfort or whatever you may call it from the brothers. Frankly, I expected they would make her eat tons of chocolate or something. But no, cranberry juice. Okay.

You can’t help but become a M in a similar situation. Wither this, either you struggle and die o-o Running away would be an option, but that straw wouldn’t last for long.

      • BlackBriar says:

Though the great dupe for twilight is still much better.

I don’t understand what you mean by that.

I’d understand if Yui was becoming a masochist because she enjoyed being bitten but so far, it looks nothing but painful for her. There’s no sign of satisfaction on her face. In some vampire lore, those bitten by them drown in a state of ecstacy and their body becomes numb in the process and so they’re unable to fight back.

        • Namika says:

Isn’t VK like an anime version of Twilight? Well, to me it is, in a lot of ways. Sorry if I puzzled you ^^” hehe ^^”

For now, that’s how it is, but after some time she’ll either rebel, try to run away or even kill herself, or she’ll accept it and with time she will get used to being treated like that. If she continues to live with them, she’ll definitely become one.

          • BlackBriar says:

Personally, I find Vampire Knight a lot better than Twilight. I don’t find Yuuki the same way I see Bella.

Now that I think about it, Twilight isn’t as innocent as its fans claim to be. I saw the movies and made observations. The second movie, Bella complained about getting older. Third movie, while being hunted down by her enemy, she tried to get her into bed with her but he turned her down because he wanted to be married first. The last two, they did then didn’t waste time “rolling in the hay” and when she became one of them, they did it again, not even a full day after she was turned. So what did she get out of the whole thing?: Sex and immortality. I don’t remember Yuuki having those ulterior motives.

I now leave you to your opinions. I wonder what they would be. 😉

            • Namika says:

Yup, it’s million times better, but they’re still similar in a way. There’s this love triangle thing, plus the way they portray the ‘forbidden romance’ between a human and a vampire. And then, there’s a war for a pretty stupid reason in both of them.
What you said is true, Bella was more selfish, compared to Yuuki and I’m not gonna say they’re similar. Yuki basically lived two lives and that’s why she couldn’t wholeheartedly chose Zero or Kaname, because she felt that if she chose one, she would betray another, when Bella just clung to Jacob, when Edward wasn’t around but ran right back to him.

    • Karakuri says:

Let’s just say that not a lot happens. …And they’ll have to cut a LOT out if they plan on keeping this PG 13 or whatever the rating is.

Yeah, what JapanInspired said. It’s just a night school for the rich (or celebrities, since they’d be busy during the day). They’re not all vampires.

Well, Ayato is the ‘leader’ (not really, but he’s the oresama) of sorts. I figured he’d be first just due to his commanding personality and the fact that he doesn’t like to loose.

…Offering her neck, drowning, same difference. xD

  2. Japaninspired says:

This was so short. And well, guess they just desided to make up a plot, since these things didn’t happen in the game.

Ayato does love takoyaki, but the only thing about it was that Yui promised him to make it.
And well, when he lifted her I had flashbacks of Yui almost being thrown on something more scary and painful than a pool Show ▼

Other than that. Well. The seiyuus are great, the characters are just as they should be, I adore the animation, the OP was wonderful, but still, something….is just missing.

    • Namika says:

The opening was great <3 <3

    • Karakuri says:

Still haven’t gotten to Ayato’s route, but that sound more interesting than Laito at the moment. I’m juuuust starting Ecstasy, since I had to take a week off of playing for school work. OTL

I’m not quite sure what this is missing either… I mean, they have a plot and everything now.

      • Japaninspired says:

Ayato’s route is pretty entertaining, you should do it.

It just pisses me off how his mother made a freak out of him. A perverted freak, a perverted “Ore-sama” freak, yeah, that’s him.

        Oh, yeah, school. -___-
But I hope you get more time to play 😀

Maybe I’ll understand what’s missing after a few episodes.

        • Karakuri says:

I just finished Laito (minus the S ending, but he’s boring me at the moment), so maybe I will. …Though I want to get to Reiji soon too.

Well, my midterms will be over in like, a week, so then I’ll be free again. …Or maybe not, since the new season is starting and there are first impressions to be had. xD

To be honest though, the game felt like it was missing something too. Like connections between plot points. I felt that some events were left hanging in between scenarios. (Like, at the beginning in Kanato’s route, the screen would black out, leaving me to wonder how the hell Yui managed to calm the guy down afterwards)

          • Japaninspired says:

Yeah, school such a sadist, 😉

Oh, that. Yeah, I thought about those blackouts too, but I think I the game doesnt get all that connected on purpose. I mean, if you think about Amnesia, that had the dates/numbers of days and how it all went one after another, Diabolik Lovers just shows like the few important parts, or how some point just tell that a few days have gotten pass. the one that I remember clearly thought, like when Yui said that Kanato has been locked in his room for a few days and how she havent seen him for a while. Like that. I don’t know if that makes sense though…

    • Karakuri says:

        Show ▼

        • Karakuri says:

There’s more? Ahaha I’m actually really enjoying this route. Though Ayato is also the one I feel the worst about regarding his childhood (out of the triplets at least).

          • Japaninspired says:

I felt pretty bad for Ayato when I found out about his childhood. But I couldn’t bring myself to actually “like” him after I ended his route.

And I didn’t feel any love towards Yui from him.
Thought his route was fun and entertaining. It had nice moments. So I kind of liked his route, but not his character.

  3. Namika says:

So, Kanato is the real beast, eh? o-o Can’t wait to hear more psychopathic Yuki Kaji.

But this was so much nicer than I expected o-o Nicer, as in not as abusive and sadistic. Sure, throwing her in the pool wasn’t the friendliest thing to do, but in general, it’s not that bad. My friend even complained to me that it seemed too romantic.
Ayato seems to be the most normal one of the bunch. I was even surprised when he asked her(more like ordered) to make some food. Just like an ordinary guy o-o with poor manners, but he seemed normal enough.
Other than Kanato, I’m interested in Subaru and Shuu. I wonder, how will they interact with Yui. Though Subaru’s anger issues seem a little ridiculous…

    • Japaninspired says:

I think the anime is “nicer”, since if they would follow the game more, which is kind of sadistic the whole first half sometimes it’s just sadistic the whole time, but with a few sweet moments, then how would they show the “good” side of the character? Sadly Otome games only get 12 episodes, otherwise, I think they would be better.

To me, It felt really strange since Ayato just does horrible stuff all the time and kind of “plays” with Yui’s feelings. It’s hard to understand when he’s actually showing his feelings. And here he’s just normal>sadistic>kind of nice. What? So I really doubt that people, who didn’t play the game will understand, maybe they’ll even begin to hate the characers and think that the game is bad too, sadly.

I really adore Kaji Yuuki, he’s amazing, I love his voice and I cant help but love all the characters that he voices. But I’m a bit scared to see how the next episode will go. Kanato is a…”special” character, it’s hard to understand him. Ayato was pretty easy compared to Kanato. I feel that if the anime wont portray Kanato the way he is, then it wont be able to show the other characters “right”. This is just my personal thought. Maybe the anime will actually get better after a few episodes. I really hope it will. Because it looks amazing, you can really see how much the animators did their best, but if the story will be lacking…

      • Liza says:

Well I guess it is good they are showing the “good” side of the characters early on. I don’t know how I would be able to tolerate the guys otherwise.

      • Namika says:

Rly? I think he really may be the most normal one of them all. Sure, he’s narcissistic and spoiled, but that type is usually easier to read, if you ask me.

Kanato really intrigues me, since he seems so messed up. Is he schizophrenic or something? And why is he so special? :3

        • Japaninspired says:

          Wow, well, maybe, XDDD

I don’t know. It’s just that to me, Kanato remained really scary even after I finished his route in all ways.
Thought I WAS able to predict what actions would make him angry unlike Yui.

XDDDDDD no, a shizophrenic, XDDD okay, okay.
          No, I think he’s actually a paranoiac.

Oh, well, to me he’s special 😉 okay, kidding. I don’t really know how to explain it, but you’ll see it. It’s kind of, the WAY that he shows his love to Yui is strange. Maybe like that.

    • Japaninspired says:

Oh, yeah. Ayato is really fond of takoyaki, lol. Which is kind of cute, I think.

Subaru is pretty understandable, well, not in the beggining…
Shu is a bit ridiculous, it will be great if the story catches him right, I’m already half-done with his route, and I think I’m getting to know him better. But he’s still really….strange

      • Namika says:

Rly? 😀 he seems pretty adequate at this point point zero, but still, just a little antisocial.
But Spammy doesn’t hate you. He’s just such a glutton xD

        • BlackBriar says:

He’s indescriminant. Hunts down rookie and veteran commenters.

        • Japaninspired says:

No, Shu is like….a lazy kid in a huge body, lol, or something like that. Even thought he looks pretty normal, he also had a quite…awkward childhood.
I don’t want to spoil it.

Oh, ahaha, that explains it, I didn’t know that Spammy thinks my comments are so appetizing. Hm….Spammy-kun?

          • Namika says:

Okay, he turned out to be not very nice. Though still a lot more adequate and bearable than the rest. And in Yui’s place I would already start planning how to annihilate Raito. That bitch is damn annoying. We should let Alucard tame him *~*

            • Japaninspired says:

Oh, you mean the 2nd episode? The endcards are so missleading! I was hoping to see Kanato, and he was so left out in that episode T_T

Actually Shuu is a lot scary than the scene from the 2nd episode.
That actually happened in the game, well, not exactly like that, but similar.
Shuu has his own reasons, he just wants Yui to be as far from him as possible.

            • Japaninspired says:

XP I meant the 3rd episode, not the 2nd.

    • Japaninspired says:

lol, it ate my first comment. Spammy hates mee T_T

    • Karakuri says:

      He’s definitely… a character.

Uhhh, I wouldn’t call any of them normal per se. They just, uh, range in personality. The only thing I remember reading about Ayato was that his childhood sucked and that he ties Yui to a dart board and then starts throwing darts that just barely miss her. I haven’t actually gotten to that route though.

  4. Liza says:

I think what I was happy about was that Yui HAS PERSONALITY. Like she actually thinks unlike some other otome game heroines.

This episode seemed a bit tamer than the last one(although it might be the fact that Ayato was the only focus instead of all of the guys going after her). I’m just scared about Kanato. Run Yui run! XD

    • Karakuri says:

Ahaha yeah, that’s a good point to all of this. Though 80% of Yui’s lines in the game seem to be some variation of “no, stop” or “it hurts”. I figured that her seiyuu would have an easy time with line memorization, but I’m glad the anime has her saying other things as well. xD

I keep talking about Kanato, since he’s obviously out there, but apparently Reiji is worse. I haven’t done that route either, but I look forward to seeing what the anime does with his events.

      • Liza says:

Well it’s something. XD Unlike Haruka who didn’t do anything but stare as Eiichi got all up in her space and had to be saved by Ranmaru…

Dang. Reji is worse!? I “liked” him too! Dang it! XD My friend warned me about Reji too since she looked up more stuff about the game than I did.

      • Japaninspired says:

Reiji IS worse! I just hate him.
        Show ▼

I don’t even remember “sweet” moments in his route, that I liked. Only that “sweet revenge!!!”

        • Liza says:

Well then. I’m done here! XD I’m just going to sit back and root for the guy that isn’t as bad as the others…whichever one he is.

          • Karakuri says:

You’ll probably like Subaru then. As far as I’m aware, he’s the “nice” one when he’s not being violent.

            • Liza says:

And he was like my number 4. XD *huggles Subaru* I’ll love you then! 😀

            • Japaninspired says:

Yeah, Subaru is the nice one.

    • Namika says:

Oh, I’m so looking forward to Kanato! Partly because of Yuki Kaji, and partly because I want to know what the hell messed him up so terribly

      • Japaninspired says:

Nothing really that horrible messed him up. It’s just that it seems to me that he, as well as Ayato really needed a loving mother, nothing more, nothing less.

        • Karakuri says:

          …Add Laito in there too.

I lied. I decided that I like this anime. And the takiyaki scene was just brutal. You could almost see the cogs working in his head for his sudden mood shift. God these guys are fucking psychotic and I love it. The girl I could do without, but then if she wasn’t there then we wouldn’t see how super psychotic these guys are. I think I like this show just because of effd in the head they are.

  6. Hazou says:

I lied I like this anime. Just because the guys are completely psychotic. And Kanato gives me the jeebies. The teddy bear scene in the limo. No one give him a fork a knife or anything sharp cause he wow. But Ayato. The takiyoki scene was just crazy. Like you could see the mental cogs working in his head as he shifted from “nice” to sadistic and rapey. Now I do not like animes that celebrate rape culture very well. But at least this heroine has a personality and she pushed him off.

  7. d-LaN says:

Welp, my NOPE button hasn’t been activated so I guess I will try another few episodes.

I have to say, the pool scene feel pretty random to me. I was like “WHAT” when Ayato saves her after he drop her into the pool but he sucks her blood anyway in the water.

    • Karakuri says:

This has awfully kind, despite the source material. Even episode 3 doesn’t seem that awful compared to other things.

I think maybe that scene was from the game…? I have no idea at this point. I think drinking her blood in the middle of the pool was a spur of the moment thing there.

  8. anaaga says:

Meh,nothing significant happened so far except some blood-sucking busine, more insult, and kissing in the water. I didn’t even know that people can make out in the water. Won’t they… drown?

Though Yui is being annoying in a way for letting herself being mistreated even though she said no, I gues the circumstances force her to do this. She’s all alone in a mansion filled with not-so-hot-but-still-hot bishies that are also evil at the same time, and her father ditched her without contacting her at all. So I guess this is where she’ all alone, and she has no other choice but interacting with the mean brothers.
But this is where the school makes a big plot hole. You’re in a school for goodness’ sake, so at least interact with some people? Find some way to get out of the mansion? Seek some help from other people?
Man, if they weren’t in school…

    • Japaninspired says:

XDD Nice question, about drowning. Maybe vampires are good swimmers?

Not so hot but still hot bishies? XDD Maybe, in a way.

I was thinking the same thing at first. Like, there are other people, ask for help! Or books, it’s a bit strange, but books usually have any answers you need.
And well, also, if you cant call your father because your phone is broken, ask someone from school! You’re not the only person with a phone.
Lastly, just quietly run away, lol. The easiest way.

Females in an Otome game are never smartwell, or you can count the half of females in anime that are not really smart in the first place, lol. Everything you hear from Yui’s thoughts is “Oh, he’s hurting me, but somehow, I can’t leave him”.
It’s ridiculous, so I kind of turn of my mind and laugh without thinking how stupid things are 🙂

      • anaaga says:

Forget about the vampires, won’t normal people drown if they open their mouth in the water? According to my experience in swimming, water goes into the mouth if one opens it, so…

The bishies are good-looking, but somehow I don’t like the art in this series. Especially the hair. The hair looks so weird

I know most female lead characters in otome games are not so smart, but I wish Yui shows some effort at it. At least shows that you’re seriously trying to get out. But of course she didn’t.
And yeah, your statement made me realize that most female lead characters in otome games aren’t so smart. Is there any otome game with a smart female lead character? I wish there are more of that kind of games

        • Karakuri says:

Well, the vampires don’t seem to have heart beats, so… do they even need oxygen? I think that kiss was supposed to be Ayato giving her air, but uh, people generally exhale carbon dioxide. I don’t even know. I’m not going to think too deeply about the scene anymore.

          UHHHHH… A smart heroine…

Wait. Felicita was one in the Arcana Famiglia game (until the anime ruined that). She wasn’t overly naive or anything, and kicked all kinds of ass. (damn it, Kon.)

        • Japaninspired says:

Oh, nooo, you should look for the game art, it’s so pretty. It’s probably one of reasons why I got interested in in.
Thought I understand what you meant about strange hair

I was thinking about this some time, I think I never heard about a “smart” heroine in an otoge. So, if I ever make my way to the anime/game industry, I’ll make that happen, an otoge with a smart heroine, that is.

    • Namika says:

Well, I know that’s a pretty real thing. But in a way, that’s pretty impossible for me 😀 water, eek 😐

That’s a good question. Maybe she’s too scared to do so, and not desperate enough yet to do so 😀

      • anaaga says:

Maybe you should try it to see whether it will work or not 😉

So, Yui actually enjoys being tortured? Wow, I didn’t know she’s a masochist. I guess that’s what this whole game is all about

        • Namika says:

I’m a terrible swimmer, and I would probably die. `_`

Yup, I thought she would become one and it looks like she already started. Quicker than I expected.

          • Japaninspired says:

Really? I’m a pretty good swimmer, even thought nobody even tough me how to swim. I can spend hours in water…
somehow that reminded me of Haru (Free!) for a moment O_o

No, she didn’t even start. Her M self will be apearing when she starts to ask for someone to drink her blood.

We should find 2 people, who would agree to make out in a pool. In the name of science of course

….I was thinking that too, but LOL otome game logic. Making out underwater = a sexy scene. Screw physics. xD

Well, to be fair, I doubt the guys would just let Yui run away. Every thing she did in the game seems to have resulted in some kind of “punishment” in one way or another. They have a huge influence too. Not that Yui knows that here though, so I have no idea why she doesn’t do anything.

Well…. If I remember correctly Oblivion also have a underwater make out scene so its not just otome game logic.

Kissing underwater is a real thing 😀

Looks like she doesn’t know what to do yet. But she did get the diary and talk to it and stuff 😀 Her level of interest must rise and towards the end of the show she should muster up the courage to open a window without asking. Not funny, I know…

        • Karakuri says:

Yes, but while someone is drowning? xD

          • Japaninspired says:

Well, Ayato is a do-S, so I think his thought were like “oh, why don’t I try making out with her while she’s drowning?”
