Danganronpa – 11

Danganronpa’s lesson of the week: Stay in school, or you’ll end up homeless.

Well, I’m finally back at school (or maybe I should say, I’ve transferred from a tiny college to a bigass university and am pursuing a completely different degree/career path). I have no complaints, but I really wish I was taking the Shakespeare study class I’m currently in back when I was blogging Zetsuen no Tempest. OTL Anyways, things are getting really interesting in Danganronpa~.

Getting right into things, Kirigiri seemed awfully intent on pinning Naegi as the culprit this episode. This was may have seemed shocking and like a huge betrayal since this came out of nowhere, but luckily the trial didn’t last long. Plus as explained later, Kirigiri didn’t have much of a choice other than to blame Naegi. Monokuma was out for blood, and Kirigiri has the best idea about what’s actually going on. It was interesting to see Naegi actually get pinned as the culprit though, and there was definitely an “oh shit” moment when he was found guilty for real, when he knew that he definitely didn’t do it. But of course, we can’t end things there, can we? Naegi’s great luck comes into effect for the first time since the start of the series, and Alter Ego saves the day. I can’t help but think having Naegi “die” at the end of an episode would have made for a better impact, but I can see how it would have been difficult to plan for that. They already cut so much out of the story and having a trial last an entire episode seems a bit excessive at this point.

I’m still disappointed that they didn’t include this, so have screenshots from the game.

If you’re wondering, there is an option in the game where Naegi can point out that Kirigiri has a key to unlock any door in the school (which is what Monokuma wanted him to do, since he knew that Kirigiri was the one who stole his key), and she has the exact same punishment… minus the part where Alter Ego steps in. So in that ending, Kirigiri dies, and everyone decides to live in the school peacefully. Er, Fukawa appears to have died at some point, since she only appears in a frame, but apparently every guy ends up having a son with Asahina (or maybe Togami’s was with Fukawa, but who knows). This also fulfills some prophecy that Haragakure made in the game earlier that Naegi and his kids would share the same mother (or something like that). Monokuma apparently leaves them alone. Though maybe that should be a huge sign that this whole bad end is all apparently in Naegi’s head as a bizarre “what if” scenario, and the game takes you back to the decision where Naegi decides to call out Kirigiri or not. Despite being a delusion though, Kirigiri’s official execution is the same one Naegi went through. It’s kind of boring that Naegi and Kirigiri have the same one, but what can you do.

Things work out anyways though, since Kirigiri goes to help Naegi, and he feels absolutely no animosity to the people who just attempted to indirectly murder him. … Though as a note not really related to anything, they sure had to climb up a long way to get to the main floor. It’s surprising that Naegi could have survived that fall but, LOL anime logic.

There’s more to Kirigiri’s back story, where the whole reason she came to the school was to find her father, who betrayed the family’s long line of detectives to become the school’s principal. She wasn’t pleased with him. In order to do so though, she broke a big family detective rule and let herself become famous (since the school only admits the very best, and they wouldn’t have known about her otherwise), and I always figured that this is why Monokuma erased her memory of what she was. Since her whole purpose of being there would have seemed weird from the start and she would have been asking even more questions if he didn’t, since she knew a lot about the school and who runs it. The way they put it here seems odd, since Monokuma’s memory erasing did absolutely nothing to hinder Kirigiri’s skills as a detective. As we saw from the start, she’s been right in there helping with every trial. Though on a side note, she’s the reason why it seems more believable that they’ve figured out the culprit for every single trial. It doesn’t seem quite like dumb luck anymore when there’s a professional there.

So yeah, the whole broadcast thing is the reason why Monokuma could never kill the students himself, directly. They kind of skimmed over this part, but Kirigiri figured that this entire killing each other thing with rules is just an elaborate set up specifically just for the broadcast. Monokuma wants to accomplish something by making them all play by the rules (since without them, this would have been a senseless massacre), and so, the rules also bind him, making it difficult for him to get rid of people like Kirigiri or Naegi who get in his way. This is what screwed him over here, since he kind of bent his own rules in trying to execute Naegi, and thus, why he was somewhat forced to agree to the final trial.

So this is why it was really weird for them to put Naegi with the dead characters at the ED from the beginning. They could have added him here, since this was the part where he “died”. Oh well, it’s not that important. The important thing now is that we have 2 episodes to figure out the entire truth behind the school. …Which should be great, since this way, they can include alllll of the details (and they’ll need to include them too, since otherwise, this will just be confusing) without cutting out the less important ones like they’ve been doing. I suspect that they’ll end the next episode with the reveal of the mastermind (which should be good, provided that you haven’t been spoiled on it, since that takes away from the fun), but I’ve been wrong before. I thought they’d end this episode with Naegi being screwed over and start off the next episode with Kirigiri’s rescue. This was good too though.

It’s time for everyone to work together against Monokuma. …For real, this time.

I admit, I got attached to this anime a little. It’s certainly not the best I’ve seen, but there’s something about it that makes it stand out. But in 2 eps, it’ll be over. T^T And now my hands got itchy to play the game. This kind of storyline would be amazing in a game, I bet. Urayamashi~

Is the mastermind really one of the students? Tbh, I seriously doubt it. But who is it.. and Karakuri-san. Please, stop intriguing me so much! 😀 What the hell can that big revelation be? o-o the mastermind is Kirigiri’s father? o-o Naegi has split personality as well? 😀

Kinda of a waste since you’ll probably know who the culprit is in each chapter already instead of feeling that EUREKA moment when you piece all the evidence together.

      • Namika says:

Not that I had a chance to play it to begin with, but still. If a miracle happened and I could, it would definitely be a bummer. TT^TT that eureka moment must feel nice, eh =w=

The Vita ver of 1st DR will be translated into english by NISA. Or you can just play the “DL ver” with the fanpatch.

    • Karakuri says:

Yeah, Danganronpa is pretty unique… The game might be worth playing now, just for all of the student interactions this anime missed out on. There’s SO much amusing dialogue that was left out. I know I’m buying the Vita version when it’s localized, just for that. …Even though I have the PSP game already. OTL Oh well, I did that for Persona 4 too. I own the PS2 and Vita versions just because.

Ahahaha… yes, the mastermind is really one of the students. I could spoil it for you, but honestly, it will be so much better if you just wait for the reveal. No description I could write would measure up to it.

Oh, by the way, we’ve already seen Kirigiri’s father. xD That’s all I’m giving you.

      • Namika says:

        We’ve seen him????? O_O But… butbutbutbut! EEeeeeeh~?! o_O

And the mastermind’s one of the students? O_O Wow. Can’t wait to find out who it is. UUUUUUUUUUUUUUU >O<

Speaking of Zetsuen no Tempest, I can’t believe it’s been almost a year since that series aired. Time sure flies when you’re occupied. Gradually, Danganronpa has become a series that I’m always eager to see the next episode. It’s not all that but it’s passable entertainment.

I almost lost faith in Kirigiri for a moment there, thinking she broke down and became like everyone else who’d do or say anything to save their skin. Even her sweating during the trial was out of character. However, that was too risky of a gamble she made with Naegi’s life and it would have ended badly for him if Alter Ego hadn’t intervened. The fact she went in after him after what she did in order to keep him alive makes me ship them even more. And if the mastermind sees them as such a threat, why didn’t he try to get rid of them somewhere at the start?

Monokuma’s unreasonable actions clearly means the pressure is reaching its boiling point. That alone should be enough to put those who are watching the broadcast in a sour mood and therefore impacting his plans. I wonder what nasty secret is in that school that the faculty is willing to kill to keep it hidden.

Side note: How exactly did three guys manage to have an agreement about having a kid with Asahina without some kind of conflict about who gets who? That’s nuts unless they decided such a thing as means for “the survival of the human race” kind of route seeing that they’re trapped and she’d be the only girl alive in the school if Fukawa died. I possibly just answered my own question right there.

    • Karakuri says:

Lol yep, that’s why I’m getting all nostalgic for Zetsuen. I think that might have been the anime I’ve enjoyed blogging the most. Er, that and Blood-C, but very few people seem to like Blood-C, so I feel less like an outcast saying I liked Zetsuen. xD

Well, it was her or him, and she had a better chance at finding the truth and getting everyone out of there alive. …Plus if you didn’t notice from Maizono’s trial, Naegi is ridiculously easy to take advantage of. The mastermind didn’t find them big threats at the beginning, but it’s after Kirigiri spent the entire time snooping around that the mastermind decided that they were threats. And then Naegi kept finding things out too. Remember Naegi finding that room and the mastermind knocking him out?

Er, maybe this is revealing too much, but the mastermind actually wanted them to find out some things. I won’t reveal the reason for that yet though.

Uhh, I have absolutely no idea. The whole thing there was just some weird delusion Naegi went through in his head, so you’d have to ask him how they figured out how to share Asahina. xD Or there’s a theory where Fukawa died at childbirth or something, since there was no trial and the scenario specifically says that Monokuma left them alone afterwards, so there was no murder and no trials. …Though again, this never actually happened, so there’s no point in analyzing why Monokuma left them alone or how this all came to be xD

My heart almost stopped when Naegi almost died. I felt like I was reading Game of Thrones all over again…

I’m really excited to see the mastermind behind everything and the reason for this crazy school. 😀

    • Karakuri says:

Ahahaha slowly making my way through the books, Game of Thrones has quickly become a game of “who dies next?” xD I know that feeling.

Oh, the reveal should be good. Once they sort through the mystery of Mukuro’s body, it should be fairly obvious who it is, but the personality definitely makes up for it.

  4. d-LaN says:

My sentiments on this show remains the same every week: Rushed, but it does a OK/passable job at adapting the game into anime form.

Hey, at least they cameo us Kirigiri execution!

Bad end Hagakure is so much more appealing than the one we have XD
