MetaVerse Episode 32: No Matter How I Look At It, It’s You Guys’ Fault This Podcast Is So Long!

mv-32

Summer ’13 impressions, fandom discussion and music on this big MetaVerse episode!

spring13-jrowHello everybody indeed, a MetaVerse is here for you to listen to! Woo! Glad to be back, and I really need to keep this thing consistent. Since we’ve been away a while, we’ve got a jampacked show for you this time. Take breaks between segments, eat a meal during a segment and I hope you enjoy this episode of MetaVerse.

Yup, it’s a long episode alright. Once I get back into the groove and release eps on a more frequent basis, we’ll keep it on the slim next time folks. Certainly much closer to 1 hour than 2.

  1. Foshizzel says:

yay its up! Thanks Jrow for all the smooth editing bro~

    • Jrow says:

This one had a lot of pieces to it, and then I had to re-upload the file a couple of times, but I like how it came out.

      On to the next episode!

  2. BlackBriar says:

Summer 2013 in my opinion is split three ways. There are those that are great, not so great but still entertaining and those that are just flat. As expected, it’s one of the weaker seasons of the year despite a few exceptional shows. I’m just waiting for Fall to get here.

I pretty much agree with everyone on Inu to Hasami. It tries to be funny but fails in the process, almost pathetic. My only reason to watch it would be to see the sadistic female lead Kirihime. How did Love Lab get in the bad section? That was surprising.

Here’s how I classified what I think of the shows for Summer. You could read it as excellent and going down.

    Full Attention (Excellent):
    Monogatari Series: Second Season
    Senki Zesshou Symphogear G
    Danganronpa: The Animation
    High School DxD New
    Gatchaman Crowds
    Stella Jogakuin Koutouka C3-Bu
    Genei wo Kakeru Taiyou
    Kamisama no Inai Nichiyoubi

    Moderate (Good):
    Free!
    Fantasista Doll
    Blood Lad
The World God Only Knows – Goddesses Arc
    Fate/Kaleid Liner Prisma Illya
    Love Lab
    Servant x Service

    Average (Bad):
    Inu to Hasami wa Tsukaiyou
    Rozen Maiden
    Choujigen Game Neptune: The Animation
    Tamayura: More Aggressive
    Silver Spoon
    Watamote
    Uchouten Kazoku

    Favorite Characters:
    Kyouko (Danganronpa)
    Celestia (Danganronpa)
    Shinobu (Monogatari Series)
    Hajime (Gatchaman Crowds)
Kirihime (Inu to Hasami wa Tsukaiyou)
    Hibiki (Senki Zesshou Symphogear G)
    Chris (Senki Zesshou Symphogear G)

    • Jrow says:

Your 3-way split concept is what I think this will be the case for most people (much moreso than before) in future seasons, especially when we have over 30 series premiering each season. Man… it seems like every week a new anime is announced for Fall, most recently Little Busters! Refrain.

  3. Highway says:

My show rankings are always kind of in flux, but would be about this order:

    Best shows:
    Stella C3
    Love Lab
    DxD New
    Uchouten Kazoku
    Rozen Maiden

Great but not quite Best shows:
WataMote (made quite the push with the last sequence of ep 4, tho)
    Silver Spoon
    Gatchaman Crowds
    Servant x Service
Tamayura ~more aggressive~ (always makes me cry in a good way)

Good shows that aren’t up to the previous levels, but are still a fun watch:
    Day Break Illusion
    Kamisama Inai Nichiyoubi
    Fantasista Dolls
    Prism Illya
    Monogatari
Inu to Hasami (I like the style enough and love Inoue Marina)
    TWGOK
Kiniro Mosaic (unfortunately the series isn’t nearly as good as that first episode)
Free! (A nearly perfect gender reversal of usual moe club anime)
    Genshiken Nidaime
Blood Lad (almost falls down into the next category)

Shows that I can’t say are good, but I’m watching anyway:
Brothers Conflict (and that horrible ED, I can’t not watch (and listen to) it!)
Neptunia (The plot is for 6 year olds, but the fanservice isn’t…)
Kitakubu Katsudou Kiroku (CONSTANTLY BEING YELLED AT IS UNCOMFORTABLE)

    Shows I’ve outright dropped:
Danganronpa (Sadistic Bear’s sadism – really the main concept of the show – turns me off)
Kimi no Iru Machi (I love romance, but I hate wheel spinning)

    • Jrow says:

I was cool with Danganronpa through 3 episodes, then 4 happened and I put the drop on it. I haven’t even watched Kimi no Iru Machi and never planned to based off the first part of Sumairii’s post.

  4. AllenAndArth says:

    Show’s i’ve dropped:
-Genei wo kakeru Taiyou(felt wrong…really wrong)
-Kitakubu Katsudou Kiroku(why you no stop talking woman!)

    the bad:
-inu to hasami(it makes no sense…it’s bad, but i’m seeing anyway, the dog…that woman is really mean!)
-free(a swimming anime really? just not my type)
    -watamote(No…just no!)
-kimi no iru Machi(i read the manga once…didn’t get as a fan…)
-Brothers conflict(Gah! THAT ED!it kills me…the show’s my kind either)
-Devil and Realist(ACCEPT REALITY ALREADY!THEY EXIST!)

Bad, but not that bad(i’m watching still):
-Neptunia(the plot is not really good…okay it sucks, there’s the reality shock…but the weapons and the style is cool…the fanservice…only vert(she’s a gamer!)!the rest is a trap…I still want to open that poring! the pedomonster was great!Best episode ever!XD)
    -ServantXService(it’s not bad…but it’s not good)
-Kamisama(it’s likeable…i can watch and not suffer)
-kiniro Mosaic(the only one on this list i stopped watching…the first episode was memorable, but the rest not so much)
-Tamayura(like SXS it’s not bad…but not good either!)
-Prism Illya(Magical girl Fate…Nah,i’m only watching for remembering Fate/zero)
-Genshiken Nidaime(i found it plain compared to some other shows, but it’s watchable)
-Day Break(it’s a, Meh! Kind of show, but i have hope for it!maybe re-watching form the start it will make it good)

Surprises(show that i thought would suck, but are good):
    -SilverSpoon(i totally thought would suck…but i was wrong it’s good!it’s a very good show!)
-Gachaman(another surprise, i had a bad vibe with it, but it turmed out a good show.)
-Blood Lad(this show conquered me with tenacity!THAT SKULL)
    -Danganronpa(THAT BEAR!)
-Fantasista Dolls(the protagonist sucks, it’s silly, but sometimes sylly is good)

    Best Shows:
-DxD New(Akeno-chan*0*9…and there’s Issei, i’m liking his character more…the crazy priest is awesome, i love that guy XXD)
-Love Lab(good comedy is good comedy!there’s talent on that show!)
    -Monogatari(somethings scare the crap out of me…THAT PERSON!but it’s a great show!)
-TWGOK(Keima is an ass…but that’s why i like the both the manga and the show, even though i didn’t get an Yui arc, just some flashback)
-Uchuten Kazoku(i would put in the surprises section, but i really liked the show!Tanuki’s are awesome)
-Symphogear G(it’s Musical!Don’t know why i liked, but i just did!)
-Gifu Doudou(It’s manly…some people are going to understand)
    -Rozen Maiden(it has charm…and tea!)
    -Stella C3(it’s smooth to watch…)

    • Highway says:

I gotta point out that Gen’ei wo Kakeru Taiyou and Day Break Illusion are the same show.

And I said it above, but it can’t be said enough: The ED for Brothers Conflict is so bad it’s almost painful, but I can’t stop listening to it. It like a song by Leonard Nimoy!

      • AllenAndArth says:

i know…i preserve a sense of hope…maybe it will become better if i watch again all episodes in marathon, that’s why i put it a differentiated name and comments, a lot of people liked…
        and
you know, the entire show is painful…BUT, that ED

    • Jrow says:

Oh man, I would’ve put Gifu Doudou in the Bad list had I contributed one myself. It’s manly most certainly and you’re cool with it, but for me it was bland.

It’s interesting to see Watamote appear on a couple bad/average lists in the comments after a couple folks on the cast talked about how much they liked it. I watched episode 2 and just didn’t feel anything from it; I get the points those guys and gal made, but I’m more aligned with you and BlackBriar on that show.

      • Highway says:

From what I’m seeing here and elsewhere, WataMote is a pretty polarizing show. And people come at it from a lot of different angles, with both opinions. I can see where it could make one uncomfortable, even if it doesn’t really make me uncomfortable. And that’s as someone who *hates* to watch people self-destruct in TV shows. I will skip ahead in movies that I have never seen before to get past the part where the person makes the huge mistake that gets them in all the trouble. And I love redemptions, and people improving, and even that’s not happening in WataMote. But I think what really draws me into the show is that the people around Tomoko are almost unfailingly kind, whether it’s the kindness you’d show strangers, or the kindness you’d show family. And also that Tomoko realizes the things that she does are not really going to help her, but she does them anyway (seriously, walking through the shopping district holding a BL game and a massager…), because that’s who she is. I can really relate to that.

        • AllenAndArth says:

it’s a show that goes to extremes…both good and bad, in my opinion, i get the humor, it’s pretty well made, but, still makes too uncomfortable to watch and like, just like mirai nikki…THAT GIRL!

  5. Jrow says:

9:39 – Overcooled talked about Gatchaman and she said that it isn’t a one-note show. Nice pun even if unintended OC! :p
