Makai Ouji: Devils and Realist – 03-04

…Styry becomes more fabulous with each passing episode.

THE STEREOTYPICAL BL DIALOGUE. …This is still entertaining for all of the wrong reasons. I don’t know what happened with me since I never minded his character before this, but I suddenly got tired of William very, very, quickly in episode 3. Maybe it was having the other character directly confront him and STILL having him deny everything (…or maybe it was poor Dantalion’s reaction to William telling him to GTFO). Anyways…

Episode 3

William still is spouting all of that crap about him being a realist, but I was pleasantly surprised when he didn’t sell out Dantalion and Sytry right away in front of the suspicious priest. Maybe the fact that he’s broke has a lot to do with that (and he’s kind of indebted to Dantalion at the moment), but I don’t know if that was even really on his mind at that point. …Plus the priest was really suspicious from the start and seemed just a liiiiitle too interested in William’s life. I’m sure his interrogation would have thrown anyone off. I guess it should have been obvious that the priest would have been bad news for demons, but I wasn’t expecting for him to be that stereotypical of a villain. There was absolutely nothing special to his character. …Though to be honest, there’s nothing too special about any of the characters. It’s the situation that they’re in that keeps things interesting. So it’s a good think that Kevin seems to be the replacement priest. If he becomes a villain, that will add some nice drama since he and William are really close. William will feel the betrayal of the one person who stuck by him for most of his life and I’m sure Kevin won’t want to kill William.

I know I just said that none of the characters have anything too special going for them, but some characters are more interesting than others. Like Sytry. Damn, the guy is fabulous (and that fabulousness is really nice for setting him apart from William’s character). As for Dantalion, he was just a large puppy this episode. You just know that he really does want William to be safe and that his order for Dantalion to get out of his sight hurt him. I’m glad that Sytry called William out on running away from everything, since that was really starting to bug me this episode. But hey, it looks like the plot is kind of coming together now. If there’s an actual organization going after William, maybe he’ll get his shit together finally! A common enemy with demons could do the guy (and the plot) some good (hopefully). Or at the very least, William won’t be able to run away as much from the situation, since I don’t think the church will be willing to listen to his “I’m not related to demons!” speech while they’re trying to kill him.

Episode 4

Summoning the forces of hell seems to be the answer for every problem on this show.

Episode 4 was a nice change though. There was the mystery around Maria and Nathan/ Camio, and William was less of a mood killer than usual. I don’t know if I’m just not watching the right things, but seeing a supernatural couple like this (where one of the members has aged) seems kind of rare for me. It’s definitely sad that the two of them were separated for so long, and I hope her presence wasn’t too obtrusive for the more hardcore BL fangirls to hate her character. She had a story I could sympathize with, unlike almost every other character on the show. …Though I do get Dantalion’s/the other demon’s problems about Solomon leaving them. This episode put the fact that humans age and eventually die into perspective a bit more. I kind of wish they had gone more into exactly why Camio seemed to hate demons and why he was killing them in the first place when he met Solomon and Maria, but maybe that was expecting a little too much depth for this show. Obviously Maria had to go elsewhere (…and be old) so Camio can join William’s harem and put Will’s wellbeing above Maria’s because of the whole Solomon thing, but it was interesting to see a long established couple like this. I wouldn’t mind seeing her character again in the future (though her illness treatment thing seems like it will keep her uninvolved in the plot for a while), since her existence immediately fleshed out Camio’s character more than anyone else’s. …Though hell if I could tell you what his personality is actually like yet.

As for William, he keeps getting flashes of… something. Hopefully they’re memories as his time as Solomon, since I really want to see Solomon’s side of things here (and maybe they’ll help William’s character). William wasn’t SO bad this episode, and he was nicely supportive with Maria. …Though he didn’t really do much this episode, so that might be why. I had higher hopes for the tension between Kevin and William too, but I don’t even know what’s going on there. Kevin was cold, which is to be expected since he seems to be somewhere on the side opposing demons (if the OP is anything to go by), but then he was perfectly friendly again when they met in the dorms. I was just as confused as William there. Hopefully Kevin’s mood swings have a good explanation to them in future episodes.

With each passing episode, my expectations for the plot go down, just a little. I guess I’ve been expecting the show to have some kind of depth to it, but I guess not. I’m perfectly fine with that though, since it’s an entertaining story on it’s own (having some substance to it would have been nice, but I can live without it). This show definitely fall under the “bad, but in a good way” category with me (like UtaPri’s level of entertainment). Again, that’s fine with me though. Not every show needs a deep, thought provoking plot. Things are getting better as the episodes progress, kind of. Again, I got super pissed at William in episode 3 and that seems to have subsided by episode 4, which might just have been due to him having a more passive role in that episode’s plot.

Next time has… female demons?! Or maybe this is just Isaac crossdressing.

Maria, Maria, Maria, Maria…Maria! I just met girl named Maria, and suddenly that name will never be the same to me! Maria! Say it loud and there’s music playing, say it soft and it’s almost like praying. Maria, I’ll never stop saying Maria! The most beautiful sound I ever heard.
    Maria…

Well, this series is okay for what it’s worth. The 4th episode was better than the 3rd, but I really want to know where this is going. Is it going to keep continuing with the whole “demon attack of the week” formula until we’ve met all of Solomon’s harem demon pillars? What’s going on with Kevin and are Heaven’s forces doing to show?

Also, it seems by episode 4 we finally, finally get our first female character (even if its a one-shot character) and our first real back-story with one of the demonic bishies. I don’t expecting much out of this series. Not much anyway…

It all seems to be one note, with just pretty colors and just enough drama to stay awake.

I found the 4th episode the most enjoyable so far. …I wish I saw the ending to this too. Or at least some kind of plot other than demon of the week. Like you said though, this is good for what it’s worth.

I’m really enjoying Kevin’s Gilbert Nightray impression, and Dantalion’s “I’m totally in love with you but instead of saying anything I’m just going to invade your personal space” moments are very sweet.

You know I suddenly remembered Seto Kaiba from Yugioh and how long it took him to believe in magic. Boy was he in denial.

Such a odd rich man he was.

    • Karakuri says:

Seto Kaiba…? I guess that’s a fair comparison ahahaha. I can barely remember Yugioh, so I’ll take your word for it. xD

      • Miss Madness says:

Well all the supernatural things going on in that should and him even getting suck into a playing card. People dying of black magic during is tournament. Him summoning a real Egyptian god from a card. He was still nope magic doesn’t exist, screw you guys.

Just curious, will you get the 3DS game?

    • Karakuri says:

As much as I’m curious about that, the 3DS is region locked. So even if I ordered the game, I’d need to buy a new Japanese 3DS too, in order to play it… So no, I’ll probably never get the 3DS game. OTL
