For once, ‘Kanetsugu’ isn’t the laughing stock
This week was as reinvigorating as last week was disappointing. We got fighting action, comedy, plot development, and some good old infighting. Of course, it took a fake Kanetsugu to get us there. This week, they’ve finally paid off the debts for the dojo, so the meido-cafe is closed indefinitely. That’s not going to make Musashi very happy, but it does mean that we get down to the business of preparing for the coming battle with the Dark Samurai. And that involves trying to learn how to control ‘qi’ in support of their samurai powers. But when Kanetsugu is left out of the decision (even though she was there), she decides she’s going to grief their efforts at training: pouring oil on them while they meditate, boiling them in the bath, and dropping logs on them over the waterfall. And while Sen and Yukimura focus on Kanetsugu, the only one who tries what she’s told is Juubei.
Keiji’s got a fun hobby, too.
And Juubei’s work pays off, as she is finally able to summon her Master Samurai form (with the usual help from Muneakira). And ‘Kanetsugu’ turns out to be Maeda Keiji, a master from Yonezawa who has been trying to teach them how to master their qi. She’s also a bit of a fun perv, as she tweaks the Dark Samurai with a fight / boob measuring contest, even giving Mataemon a boob honk. Too bad she’s androphobic, and can’t even stand Muneakira touching her shoulder. So are the True Shadow girls back to full strength? Not really, since Yukimura and Sen need to be better to use their qi as well, and Juubei is now stuck in Master Samurai form. But the show seems back on track (maybe I shouldn’t say that, cause last time I did we got the horrible M-1 Grand Prix).

Kazuya redeems himself with Haruka, and they start spending more time together. This episode was basically a celebration of a couple, even though it took them until the end to actually confess to each other. And by that point, it was one of those “Of course you love her!” confessions that seem like they don’t need to be done. But as we saw with Kotoura-san, sometimes even if everyone knows it, including the two people involved, it still needs to be said.
As I said, a celebration of a couple. We get lovely pictures of Haruka as she and Kazuya go to the beach, but he’s still afraid of her frailty, which she finally calls him out on. And does so in quite the forward way, having her touch her chest behind the shops at the beach. But it finally seems to get the message to Kazuya that she’s not a porcelain doll, even though he understandably doesn’t go very far in groping her. We also get to see what a great person Haruka is, with her understanding the reasoning of the Shashin-bu to make her Miss Photogenic, and allowing them to display all the photos they’ve taken of her. I also thought it was pretty great that Kudou asked for permission to keep them on display. It really helps make his “We’re not perverts” position a little more palatable. Of course, Kazuya did have to spend some time blocking Itta and Takashi when he was taking shots of Haruka at the playground, but the magical appearance of Uchida distracted them enough to get away.

Thus ends the Niimi Haruka ending, and now it looks like it’ll be Sanehara Hikari next.

One can’t help but wonder how someone falls asleep while punching someone in this position.
This episode was very slapstick heavy like I’d been hoping for, but none of it had the bite of Youto’s rants in the very first episode. Youto’s reactions to Tsukiko’s verbal and physical abuse wasn’t bad, but then it had to go through all the cliche bathtime gags. Youto’s complete shamelessness was actually pretty funny, a perfect storm of idiocy and courage. But Tsukushi responding as if there was a Lovecraftian horror hanging between his legs was just too much. It crosses the line to “full retard” that they were talking about in Tropic Thunder. At least the slapstick segments were animated well, using lots of long static cuts and animation smears to give things a natural feel. I especially liked the between-the-legs shot of Youto walking in on Tsukiko, stumbling into the cubbies, stumbling back to the doorway, then exiting.
Enough things happened story-wise to keep things interesting. Azusa has now set up the perfect romcom hijinks opportunity by lying to her friends about being with Youto, which is sure to end in tears. Tsukushi has revealed her fears of being abandoned thanks to some conveniently timed sleep talking, and Youto seems to have stumbled onto something really big in the shed in the Tsutsukakushi home. The stony cat magic realism aspect sure has gone deeper than I had initially expected, and Youto’s after-the-fact narration about how he was probably lead to the shed has me hoping that we get a nice fantasical explanation for it.
Great little shot here, beginning and ending between Tsukiko’s legs smoothly without a cut.

Qi-Channeling Man Haters: I kinda did a facepalm this episode. It might even be double facepalm worthy. Don’t martial artists, as depicted in the show, use something like qi already. All the descriptions and depictions fit right in that tropes wheelhouse. Or is the master samurai status like Spider-Man; where you have to get bitten by a radioactive Mureakira?
Other than that, we have a solid episode that really does set up for the final arc/s.

I think it’s something like the difference between ‘having’ and ‘controlling’ it. Plus, I’ve always had the impression that Yukimura and Sen have always just basically relied on the ‘stat boost’ aspect of being a Master Samurai, because they’ve never even been competitive against an opponent that approached their power level. Juubei is the only one who’s had any success at all. They turned Nia instead of fighting her, and were merely a diversion against the Shinigami in the first season.
I’d love to see Yukimura and Sen become proper Master Samurai, able to challenge the likes of the Dark Samurai and Gisen at her Amakusa strongest.

At times I would rather see the characters go with a development arc, than see them badass from the get go. I really don’t find the Dark Samurai that compelling as a result. Too badass.

David Attenborough’s Life Series: Elephants in the Bath House.
I love it when this show gets raunchy and slapstick; some of the best comedy moments of the season barring Mikasa 9989’s Trollololo, and without all the blood and screaming.
While it would have been good to hear Yotou’s typical hentai monolouge, I think that would have been to the debit of Tsukushi’s wonderful full on retard rants. No one can be this lame in the membrane; she is such a troll. That’s my opinion at this point.
Oh, and Tsukiko’s reaction were so telling. First, dear, biting the boy once is punishment, biting twice leads to a third time, which means you really like doing it. And…yeah, you peaked. Hentai for Hentai, this is an official ship…

Hyakka Ryouran Samurai Bride – 06: The most endowed female on record is a man-hater. Whoo, that’s going to cause some friction for the story and she’s like an agressive version of Hagure Yuusha’s Chikage and critical about breasts like Dakara Boku wa, H ga Dekinai’s Muneo Meshiyori. “A bit of a perv” is an understatement. She couldn’t keep her hands off the dark samurais. As for the training, wasn’t the black aura around the girls when they become master samurais already considered qi?
I continue to be amazed by Kanetsugu’s oblivious attitude. The girl was within 5 feet of everyone. If someone were to be shot in the next room, there’s a 90% chance that she wouldn’t notice that either. Absolutely no minding of her surroundings. It’s a miracle she still able to draw breath.

Photo Kano – 06: This was a nicely done romance episode and that’s a rare thing for me to say given that regular, slice of life type romance isn’t really my thing. The second half felt as though the series was ending right here so where things go from now on is anyone’s guess. Normally when there are “innocent” looking characters around, it tends to be something forced but with Haruka, the feeling was natural and believable and the best part is that she admits that she has faults and doesn’t act tsundere.

I’m pretty sure that it’s going for separate endings for other girls starting from somewhere after episode 4’s happenings. I don’t know if you’ve seen Amagami SS, or Yosuga no Sora, but both of them have the same kind of ‘reset’ or ‘alternate’ story telling.

The Hentai Prince and the Stony Cat – 05: Hahaha, is this the stony cat’s arcane way of shipping Youto and Tsukiko together, by having him “move in” with her? I know we’re starting to but it’s turning out that the cat may be a fanatic.
And now, Youto shouldn’t be the only one labeled a pervert since Tsukiko is honing her biting fetish. She’s enjoying it a little too much for it to be seen as a form of punishment. That last shot for the Hentai Prince section had me thinking things were going the Vividred Operation route.
Tsukushi is really blowing her previous image as a strict, no nonsense perfectionist with her idiocy. I can’t she’s still buying into that twin brother bit. And she comes on too strong with her sister complex.
Raunchy and no-holds barred perversion. Yuki Kaji is definitely at his peak playing perverts. To be able to push away his shame while being seen completely naked, this guy is leaving Issei Hyoudo in the dust.

Samurai Bride: A nice step forward for the series after the swimsuit clunker from the previous week. Keiji is a great addition to the cast, and certainly a looker with pink hair and displaying the most skin coverage (while still “clothed”) of any girl in the series.
