Nomination Quotes:

Tofu Sakamichi no Apollon showed me the beauty of jazz music and that OST lives on in my playlist as the most longest OST selections that have stayed in the playlist (I roughly clean out music each month and a half or 2). I think that if you had also watched Sakamichi no Apollon, you might also start to like jazz a bit more! Try it out! I highly recommend this series!
HighwayGirls und Panzer. All that great martial music, thematically keyed to the country of the school that was being shown, and Katyusha for an insert song.
lvlln – Nisemonogatari really surprised me with its music. Bakemonogatari‘s wasn’t bad, but this was even a step above. Just wonderful work by Satoru Kosaki. Tanaka Kouhei’s Hyouka soundtrack was wonderful too, bringing to mind his earlier work on Diebuster, giving the same sense of wonder as that show, except in a mystery high school setting. And I don’t know if Girls und Panzer should count as an original soundtrack, but it deserves props for its great use of famous and well known public domain (and should-be-public domain) music.

Nomination Quotes:

HighwayRinne no Lagrange – “Try Unite!” by Nakajima Megumi. This song is catchy, but also slightly melancholy, and has those lovely sections where it just builds tension, and builds, and builds at least two levels past where you expect it to release and keep going, until finally it releases it with that iconic “Maru!”
Gecko To The Beginning by Kalafina from Fate/Zero 2. Perfection for the show, especially the title. And it’s Kalafina.
lvlln – Futakotome, the 1st opening to Nisemonogatari and a sequel of sorts to Bakemonogatari‘s Staple Stable, was the best of the many openings of that series. (Even if Tsukihi’s Platinum Disco ended up the more memorable one this year). The energy of Joshiraku‘s opening Thank You For Your Appreciation was infectious and perfect for the series. The dancing of Tsuritama‘s opening was just as infectious.

Nomination Quotes:

Jrow – PapaKiki’s ED “Coloring” by Yui Horie just as a song. Also “Gekko Symphonia” from Aquarion Evol. Video included, “Study x Study” from Highschool DXD.
Gecko – Fate/Zero 2: Sora wa Tataku Kaze wa Utau. (I can’t remember the English name) by Haruna Luna. Again, it was perfect for the show and it’s beautiful on its own.
lvlln – Nisemonogatari‘s ending Naisho no Hanashi by Ryo was fun enough to write a whole post on. Joshiraku was another show that excelled on both ends with an ending just as catchy as its opening. And another Ryo work, Guilty Crown‘s ending Confession was quite the excellent song in a not so excellent series.
Highway – Hyouka – Kimi ni Matsuwaru Mystery – Satou Satomi and Kayano Ai. A catchy song with an absolutely perfect animated vignette accompanying it, Chitanda and Ibara chasing Oreki and Fukube and catching them, only to see them get away. Worth seeing just for Houtarou and Satoshi stepping along like villains from a silent movie.
Tofu – Err…. how many ending songs were there for Guilty Crown? 2… or was it 3? Don’t remember it being 4 but ANYWAYS yeah, I can’t think of anything else and GC came into my mind first so I’ma gonna go with that XD Supercell always makes good music so why not right? I do remember them being awesome songs XD So I nominate all the ED’s.

Nomination Quotes:

GeckoYuki Kajiura, for the Madoka movies and SAO. (Not sure about Fate/Zero, it wasn’t her best work.)
Tofu – I’m just gonna go with a composer I know off by heart and that’s Kajiura Yuki. She has done a marvelous job in Fate/Zero and I’m sure most of you would agree with me on this ;D I loved how she captured each moment with a befitting tune; no matter what the atmosphere, it always seemed to fit. I’m just disappointed that they had to cut off SO MUCH from the light novels.
Kyokai – I have nothing against Yuki Kajiura (love her work), but I am AMAZED no one nominated Yoko Kanno! This anime was all about music and without her music, this wouldn’t have turned out to be so good. Bow to the legend who produced music of Cowboy Bebop, Escaflowne, Macross and GitS. Also, let’s not forget Hiroyuki Sawano (Guilty Crown) and Taku Iwasaki (Jormungand).

Nomination Quotes:

CarVac – I liked the percussion/electric guitar tracks in Nisemonogatari, and the AKB0048 instrumental versions of existing AKB48 songs.
TofuThat one tune which plays during a serious/romantic moment most of the time between Haru and Shizuku in Tonari no Kaibutsu-kun! OMG It’s so adorable~!!! It really sets the mood for any of the romance in Tonari, not just Haru X Shizuku <3
Gecko – Hiding Determination of Horizon S2. It’s quite wonderful and upbeat while building energy throughout the song without losing anything.
lvlln  Girls und Panzer‘s Katyusha counts thanks to the instrumental version being used in the background in the 9th episode. Nisemonogatari‘s aptly titled Pleasure taught us the joys of brother-sister toothbrushing. Mysterious Girlfriend X‘s Strange Dream was an oft-repeated piece in that show, used in some unforgettably bizarre dream scenes.
akagami – Rinne no Lagrange – the BGM was well done, or at least it made my experience more enjoyable.

  1. moon says:

people are just guna pick the animes they like, sooo yea~ they wont consider looking up the music of the ones they dont know

    • Kyokai says:

The reason we provided videos of concerned and I hope people at least check out some good music even if the anime they belonged to were ugh.

  2. Tofu says:

I really have to say that 2012 was a good year for music! xD And to take your thought into consideration Moon, I have listened to all the songs and chosen what I liked ^^

Also, thanks for the publicity xD I didn’t actually think you would put up the comments~ AHHH! That Guilty Crown comment is soooo embarrassing ~ >//////<

    • Kyokai says:

2012 was a very good year for Music indeed and no worries Tofu, not everyone can remember titles of song released 6 months ago. xD

  3. skylion says:

Is it just me, or is the ED for Oda Nobuna not on any list? Hikari was awesome good.

  4. tsog says:

At least music is top notch in GC. Supercell really opened my world to anisongs.

    • Kyokai says:

Ryo has done a lot for anime music in and outside Supercell (take Naishou no Hanashi of Nisemonogatari as an example).

      • Restia says:

how did I miss this comment o.o

        FANRANT~

Vocalist Yanagi Nagi has guested on several Supercell tracks that most people mistake her as a member.

Nagi debuted as a solo singer I think early last year. She also does vocals for Touhou doujins(which why I know her other than Bakemonogatari)

Last year she collaborated with Key’s Maeda Jun. YES MAEDA JUN. MAEDA JUN. FOR AN ENTIRE ALBUM. OMFG. And it was glorious. And all the songs made me cry.

  5. BlackBriar says:

2012 was flooded with good music and it was difficult making favorite picks but good nonetheless. Definitely hoping 2013 is worthy of the same popularity.

Gotta love the music for Guilty Crown, Tasogare Otome x Amnesia, Jormungand, Rinne no Lagrange, [K], To-LOVE-Ru: Darkness, Muv-Luv Alternative: Total Eclipse and High School DxD.

    • Kyokai says:

This is going to be a difficult poll with such an amazing line of music.

      • BlackBriar says:

The results are what are making me nervous the most. It could be anyone that’s declared the winner but there’s a little bias floating around for Guilty Crown.

  6. tankamaster says:

“Bios” from Guilty Crown is the most epic background music ever. Sometimes I just play it around the house. Makes me feel like I’m saving the world while washing the dishes.

  7. Joojoobees says:

Why no love for “Go to the top”, Kumi Koda’s OP for Muv-Luv? That’s a great song.

    • Highway says:

I will always believe that song would have been way better as dubstep. And nothing is ever better as dubstep, but that song would have been so much better with a huge bass drop.

      • Joojoobees says:

Well, there is a dubstep section in the extended version, so I’m going to count you as voting for “To the Top” in the unofficial results. 🙂

    • BlackBriar says:

I noticed BTOOOM!’s “No pain, No game”, Phi Brain S2’s “Now or Never”, [K]’s OP “Kings”, Jormungand’s “Borderland”, Jormungand: Perfect Order’s “Under/Shaft”, Mirai Nikki’s “Kuusou Mesorogiwi” and Senki Zesshou Symphogear’s OP Single “Synchrograzer” weren’t mentioned either. They were also great songs.

  8. Samantha Zan says:

Even though it was one of the worst train wrecks or the year. Guilty Crown had one of the best music all around. I love Bios, makes me feel like a badass all the time XD. Hiroyuki Sawano is one of my favorite composers!!!

    • Kyokai says:

Sawano really did outdo himself with GC. Interestingly, majority hates GC but it became too popular with its love and hate trail so in the end; it was still a success.

  9. Yvoon says:

Sakamichi no Apollon for best soundtrack of the year. HANDS DOWN. Its actually my favourite soundtrack out of all the anime series I have ever watched. Seriously! Jazz has been the only thing I have been listening to the past week or so!! ><

I'm really considering buying the piano music sheets from this anime….*veeery tempted*

  10. Yvoon says:

Hiroyuki Sawano is always awesome! He’s a definite win for me! 🙂

  11. Jay says:

I smell something here. You like Guilty Crown, do you?

  12. belatkuro says:

Didn’t participate in the nominations but I’ll vote here.
I’m not much of a music enthusiast but I do listen well to soundtracks and some of the choices in there do stand out for me. Horizon 2 and Kuroko’s soundtracks are the ones that I really loved this year. The latter really brought out the intensity of the matches and is one of the things I loved about the anime.
The former really matched well with the craziness and excitement of the show.

Kajiura’s work is still great and I still love it but she did end up reusing her tracks in SAO. She did well in F/Z but I was kinda expecting a remix of the Emiya soundtrack in one of the fights, especially in the Kotomine/Kerry fight but I got the Sword of Promised Victory one so it’s good.

Looking at the results, it seems like it’s gonna be a landslide towards GC. While it was the biggest trainwreck of all, the music and the animation were the ones that made it shine and that’s what reflects in the polls I guess.

This post is getting long so I won’t comment on the OP and EDs but I have to say I love listening to most of them. My phone is actually full of anime songs that I don’t go out without my earphones and listen to them.

All in all, a good year for anime music for 2012.

  13. Yukarin_YY says:

DANSHI KOUKOUSEI ENDING FOR THE WIN~!! ^v^ Ohisama hilariously funny, catchy, and truly creative :> I loved Ohisama =w=

    • Highway says:

The whole song is a hoot to listen to, and in a bit of a different move, the verse used in the TV size ED is the second one, not the first one. It also shortens the end a LOT.

  14. lvlln says:

Wow, if not for Yuki Kajiura and the triple-headed Fate/Zero/SAO/Madoka monster, this would be a clean sweep for Guilty Crown. Which, alright, had good music, but where’s the love for Satoru Kousaki’s Nisemonogatari OST+iconic OPs? Tanaka Kouhei’s hauntingly beautiful Hyouka soundtrack? The excellent use of classic, recognizable tunes in Girls und Panzer? Come on, guys, you can do better.

    • Yukarin_YY says:

ikr I loved Hyouka’s sound track =‿= so beautiful
Monogatari OSTs are always great :>
Girls und Panzer bgms were really nice to listen to, felt like a field trip or something lol

ps. everytime I load this page, my computer starts lagging so badly hahaha

    • Restia says:

lvlln you were right. Sweeping across all but one category. darn you triple headed monster

  15. Highway says:

Unfortunately, the video for Enter Enter Mission doesn’t have the best feature of the ED in the show: Bouncy Chibi Tanks!

  16. akagami says:

OMG, I just got the [K] OST (I didn’t know it came out in Nov with the BD vol2 ><)

    annnnnd it's soooo good!!!!!

Right now listening to Suoh Mikoto on repeat \(≧∇≦)/

    • Kyokai says:

@ akagami, there are different volumes of OST so make sure you get all of ’em. They are pretty good! :3

      • akagami says:

        Really???

Do you have any info on them? I only found out the one with the vol2 BD by luck. It’s hard to find any info when any search on K gives you a million of different answers that aren’t relevant. It doesn’t help that the Japanese name is also K (>.<)
Wiki isn't helpful at all either (though I'm not really surprised).

  17. akagami says:

I think the spam monster got tired of you guys and is looking for fresh meat =(

  18. akagami says:

I take back my original comment in the predecessor post about 2012 lacking in OST quality… K, Horizon, Tonari, all sound beautiful!

Just found out Tonari OST comes out tomorrow!!!!!! Listening to this to tide me over!

K has some really beautiful and moving pieces. Listening to it really makes me wish S2 was here already!
Horizon’s music gets me excited (Go Tori!).
Girls und Panzer’s music is very soothing, and definitely fits the anime and military theme very well.
SAO’s music gets me all pumped again (I really miss the Sword Art Online arc)…
Was listening to a slow version of Platinum Disco, it’s really nice! I can only do…um….London Bridge is Falling Down.
While I don’t really like Jormungand’s OST on a stand-alone basis, it really did make the anime come alive – perfect for setting the mood.

I just listened to bits of the Guilty Crown OST, and I just don’t really find it that great. But it could be the trauma inflicted by OH MY SHOE that I just can’t listen to it without cringing.

  19. Kyokai says:

Just a note on Girls und Panzer, adding it on these polls was a mistake as it has not finished airing. All the votes to it would be disregarded.

  20. Gecko says:

Ah I’m so embarrased you guys are using quotes from me. >//< Especially the quote about Yuki Kajiura, but oh well. I should be used to people hearing my opinions but no…
