Mouretsu Pirates – 03

Marika is ready to go on a space adventure!

Three episodes in and I am so addicted to this series! I have also found some great fan art related pictures of Marika; I just have to choose the pirate outfit, maid clothes, or school uniform? Anyway I will decide on that later.

Plot this week follows Marika and Chiaki fail at their first electronic warfare battle and they study for final exams before the first official launch of the Odette II. However, the ship experiences some issues and requires the girls to do a short space walk and repair the main mast.

Chiaki-“Did you bring any tokens for this game?”              Marika-“EHHH!? NO ONE SAID I NEEDED ANY!!”

Starting off our pirate adventure this week with Chiaki and Marika failing at electronic warfare together, until they get caught by Kane after they trigger a power surge shutting off the ship… Way to go, you two! Then again this was Marika and Chiaki’s first time trying any electronic warfare. After the fun on the Odette II, the students have to return to earth and start a full week of testing at school before the big launch day of the ship, and Chiaki has another battle against her greatest rival of the series, the chocolate parfait boss.

Marika-“Whoops my bad yo! Hopefully my cute expression makes up the errors.”

Chiaki-“Ku Ku Ku…We meet again? I CHALLENGE YOU, Chocolate parfait!”

Chiaki-“So another battle next week? Sounds great to me!”

Marika-“Question one, what phrase do pirates love to say? Man that is a hard question…”

So after a few days of testing for the girls they are ready to fly in space. Hooray! I would seriously join their club…but no guys allowed except Kane. I bet all the guys out there would love to trade places with him right now. After everyone boards the ship they do a final rundown of the systems and prepare the Odette II for a practice flight around the Tau star. The Odette II actually comes with a few large masts just like a real pirate ship. This ship also comes complete with a few large solar “sails” that help the ship travel around in space via solar wind.

Again that green haired girl, who loves to wave! Maybe her arm is stuck in that position?

Kane-“Sooooo when do I get to drive?”                Chiaki-“Only if you can summon me a chocolate parfait.”

Smooth sailing ahead for the crew so far, however something goes wrong when they try to deploy the sails as one of the masts gets stuck. This requires Kane to take a few of the girls outside to manually fix the mast. After the girls get dressed and a bit of “playing” they finally get ready to head out into space with Kane. Once outside, Marika comes up with an idea to fix the mast and she leads the girls to repair the mast together, even though it seemed like they simply pushed the mechanical joints at the same time to push it along. The episode comes to an end with Kane asking Marika if she’s scared, she simply answers with a yes to his question. While Marika said she was scared and feels like a simple dot in space she is still excited to begin her space adventures.

Marika-“EHHHHHHH!? Why is everyone copying my catch phrase?!”

Kane leads his pack of cute space girls to repair the mast.

Marika-“I am ready to take on the whole universe, yarr!! WAIT! That was the answer on my test.”

Extra space pirate adventures

Marika-“Chiaki-chan, those are lame looking headphones!”     Chiaki-“Sorry, I can’t hear you over my awesome headphones.”

Marika’s stomach service for you to enjoy.

Nothing flat about Marika this week.

FK YA SPACE RANGERS!

Not a lot actually happened on this episode of Mouretsu Pirates as it seems they are still in world building mode. But I did enjoy watching Marika and Chiaki work together. Even though the two of them did fail at their first electronic warfare it still showed they can work as a team when the time calls for it. I still think Chiaki is hiding something very important from Marika, but I really have no clue as to what that could be. I still find it really odd how she wears that black uniform? Maybe she just loves the colors? So did anyone else laugh watching her eating that Chocolate Parfait? Damn I saw that smile of hers, so Chiaki can actually smile…even though it was towards her food. With all those floating questions around Chiaki, I can tell she is protecting Marika from danger, like keeping an eye on her at the maid café so there is something there. Hopefully we discover the truth behind her character soon.

Speaking of characters, anyone else notice more Kane in this episode? I found it funny watching him grade all those papers like a madman. You could tell he was like OH CRAP GOTTA GRADE TESTS! At least he was somewhat serious about that. Kane also had to teach the girls some safety lessons about going into space with a suit, and he was really focused on watching Marika take charge with planning a way to repair the mast. I loved that Odette II actually had masts and sails, just like a real pirate ship, so good job on that Mouretsu Pirates, I am impressed.

I really liked the whole idea of using solar wind to push the ship along through space, but I am no expert on the science of space travel. I did read a bit on solar wind, but don’t take my word for it as I understood it as energy from the sun thanks to solar flares? I am sure someone else can explain it better than me. I still enjoyed learning all this new stuff with each episode. I can’t wait to see what happens next with Marika and the others, like when we’ll see the remaining crew of the Bentenmaru? I want to see that robot dude and more Kane being awesome.

I think every battle is at midnight in space…

Danger in space!? Will Marika tell everyone her dad was a famous space pirate? Stay tuned for more fun with Mouretsu Pirates.

About

Is huge anime fan from Florida! who loves to watch anime and also enjoys drawing and collecting pictures, my favorite genre of anime has to be Mecha, there is just something awesome about giant robots beating the crap out of each other! Other than that type of show, I love a good comedy or action series :D

I feel like the girls in this are all very sweet, and actually very natural. I especially liked the silence as they all left the space craft, very effective. I think I’m going to keep liking this show.

    • tatsuya says:

you not the only one who think that ^^

    • Foshizzel says:

True that! Junko! Although it looks like episode 04 might have some drama? I saw some interesting reaction shots on some of the girls…Yeah that whole going out into space was so good! The silence really set the mood 100% perfect.

      • tatsuya says:

Seriously, I didn’t Chiaka to be this cute.^V^ I thought Marika would be the most adorable but no, it’s Chiaka. Always grumpy but occasionally smiles, bliss. well ,if that makes me sleep well at night .

        • Foshizzel says:

Ahaha no problem! We all have our favorites <3 Chiaki is good too I like her design and character xD

  2. tatsuya says:

    nobody can’t resist chocolate

  3. Noobmage says:

For more info on solar wind sailing, you can look at this article:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IKAROS
Basically, they use both the photon’s momentum and the solar wind.

  4. skylion says:

Ah, Noobmage beat me to it. This is a subject I researched last year. I was kinda hopping up and down when I watched them deploy those sails just due to sheer shared excitement. AFAIK little in sci-fi or fantasy is using this sort of thing these days. As I expected our Bodacious setting to be more towards the Star Wars end of sci-fi, this is an surprising touch.

    “I’m so lady”…::spit take:: Fosh,you devil.

    • Joojoobees says:

Yes, I was thinking this show would be more “fantastical”, and I have been happily impressed that it is grounded in a hard science attitude. Makes me very excited to see what happens next.

    • Melf says:

Still, those sails – unless they are just some projectors for a force field that acts as a solar sail – are ridiculously small. Concerning mass of that ship they would need many square kilometers of sails and the voyage would still take months or years. Still a nice touch. 🙂

Concerning those latex space suits – they are actually based on a real research in space suit design, the bio-suit/space activity suit. In this space suit type, just the head piece is pressurized and the rest of the space suit works just with mechanical counter-pressure, making movement easier and female characters wearing it looking better. 🙂 Another anime using this spacesuit type is the (JAXA sponsored !) Rocket girls.

The bridge layout is very well done – it uses the the available space very effectively (2 stories & round) and is correctly oriented with the trust axis, eq. when the thrusters are running, the floor is really “down”. The central shaft is a little bit more problematic, it sure is useful in zero-g, but you really don’t want to be near the top of it when the thrusters start running. 🙂

      • Foshizzel says:

Yeah the sails were a nice touch to the theme I liked where they were going with it.

Lolol yeah I saw a few episodes of Rocket Girls, and agreed they are really nice looking on the girls of Mouretsu Pirates <3

True! I thought it was different from most space themed anime, I am used to the Gundam style setup of the command area with everyone facing the same direction...lol yeah good point on the zero-G xD

      • skylion says:

OoOoOo Rocket Girls looks kawaii. Will have to see if I can carve out the time to give it a viewing. I like the premise.

    • Foshizzel says:

Ooooooh! That is awesome man! I loved the whole mast and sails part was like damn…they did some homework! Then again…it probably was a no brainer to throw those terms in for a pirate themed anime ahaha

True the science might be like wtf Gundam science where stuff just “happens” like pink explosions? and smoke from missiles? LOLOL I was thinking they were pulling some Stargate Universe stuffs, in that series the ship goes over any sun to “recharge” their energy.

      LADY FOR THE WIN!! <3

  5. Kitty says:

I’m enjoying the more Kane screen time but Marika is equally as loveable. Very interested to see the episode where she finally get on the Bentomaru (know that is so not the spelling sorry XD haven’t memorized everything yet) I like me some good old pirate space action.

I know its totally NOT the same genre or even league. But this show makes me nostalgic for Cowboy Bebop.

    • Foshizzel says:

I really liked Kane this episode you can tell he is really keeping a close eye on Marika’s progression, yeah I can’t wait till she decides to take over for the role of the Bentenmaru captain.

Nope it fits Cowboy Bebop! And Outlaw star and several spacey themed anime! Try Stevia that is another great one.

      • Kitty says:

Awe man Outlaw star rocked!! I tired to find Stevia on MAL and google and got nothing 0.o do you have a link for me? I’d love to give it a try after Winter2012 is over. Watching so many, just drop me a line on twitter (@icenek0)

    • Bob from Accounting says:

Probably all the hacking. The hacking style used in this is quite similar to Ed’s (as in visually) so that’s probably what’s making you nostalgic. I felt it a bit too.

  6. Hawthorne says:

lol’d at the iM@S ref. XD I love the way they’re spending so much time on details an ordinary 13 episode series probably wouldn’t have time to do, like on the hacking-warfare stuff and managing the maintenance on the ship. It’s surprisingly interesting, ordinarily I think I’d be bored out of my mind.

    • Foshizzel says:

Thank you! Next up Imas in space! Who wouldn’t love to see them singing and dancing in space suits? Anyway I hope they upgrade to 26! This series needs more episodes, unless they are testing it first?

LOL yeah that part would get old fast…but I like the pace of this series so far.

  7. BlackBriar says:

I find Marika is a bit too optimistically gullible for a soon to be pirate captain. She has to be able to take things a bit more seriously, but not too serious like Chiaki. She, on the other hand, could use a chill pill.

Ku ku ku, Chiaki must have the most awesome weakness there is… the chocolate parfait. I wimper in fear of it. Not really, I’d eat that in no time at all despite getting a brain freeze.

Misa has some really strange character features: pale skin, red eyes, blonde hair with blue ends and green lipstick. Besides the lipstick, what’s in her DNA?

Wow, if I ever want my tests graded, I hope Kane will be the one to do it. He did it so quick it was like he was a man on a mission. Put more Chiaki and Kane in the next episode.

Marika fanservice was the icing on the cake. Her stomach and boobs in the spacesuit were the best part. Space Rangers, assemble!!!

    • Foshizzel says:

True…I dunno I still like her personality towards being a pirate! Then again maybe it hasn’t truly hit her yet? I have a feeling episode four will be a eye opening one for Marika, yeah maybe not as serious as miss tough as nails Chiaki.

Whahahaha yes! Chiaki versus the chocolate parfait <3 I want one too...damn anime food!! -shake fist-

Misa = Nia from TTGL just with short hair and bust hahah

Kane so awesome, yeah I want to see more of his "leadership" side of his character.

Dem stomach shots <3 Marika! Although I hope that short scene of fan service keeps people watching...I keep thinking back to Hanasaku Iroha and the bondage scene! That made a lot of people drop that series...

      • skylion says:

….which was the thing that got the whole series going…If he hadn’t tied her up, he wouldn’t have gotten desperate when everyone showed up looking for her, which meant he wouldn’t have bolted, which meant Ohana would have no opportunity to set things right.

And how does one compare a bare belly shot to an inane attempt at turtleshell bondange? Cause that is one heck of a spacewalk.

        • Foshizzel says:

Lol yeah that scene was so short I hope people stick around..seems really pointless to drop it after that, then again the Ohana bondage scene scared a few people away early! But whatever people are picky towards what series they want fan service in vs none.

          • akagami says:

I was about to say, “What bondage scene?!? In Hanasaku Iroha?” and then I remembered the short scenes with Jiroumaru. I don’t really notice the fan-service usually except when it’s thrust in your face like ecchi series. The stomach scene just looked… out of place to me. Nothing bad, just odd.

Actually, the one thing that ran through my head was – a spacesuit zipper? I refuse to believe a zipper on such flimsy looking spacesuits will fully seal them off from space.

  8. akagami says:

This episode made left me unsatisfied. The pacing was really slow and nothing really happened. After 3 episodes I’ve moved this down to watchable list and moved Rinne up to pretty good. I was expecting to see some neat electronic warfare and all I got was a coward abandoning his ship fleeing the space station. *sigh*

Though after watching this makes me want to boot up Infinite Space on my DS. That was an awesome spaceship RPG.
