Danshi Koukousei no Nichijou – 03

What, you say? The beach episode of high school boys is finally here?

It’s already been a week since I’ve last seen the Nichibros? Whoosh, it didn’t feel that long ago. It’s Chinese New Year this week, and things have been really busy around the household with tons relatives coming over to visit, but when you get to fattening up with all those yummy goodies and receiving red packets, it’s all worth it in the end. xD Now, onto more hilarity!

Ah, finally, summer is here—eh wait, what?! Isn’t it winter in real life? Well, it doesn’t affect these high school boys, as they are ready to celebrate the arrival of the summer vacation. That is, without any girls. The boys hold a meeting to decide on their summer plans, with Hidenori chairing the session. Naturally, utter chaos breaks loose, but they somehow manage to decide on… duh, the beach.

With all the boys in their *cough* fashionable swimming trunks, they set off on their mission – to pick up those bikini babes! Shortly after, they give up and lament their inability to get any girls, until Hidenori notices something important: all the ladies are more interested in the noodle shop, and that’s how he came up with the brilliant conclusion that girls like their noodles and men the same way – hot. This earns him a hard whack from Motoharu. What a terrible pun, Hidenori, I am disappoint. xD

Motoharu uses bitch slap! The attack is super effective, Hidenori faints!

Next, the boys take a leisurely bath in the hot springs, and chance upon the ping pong table. Knowing these guys, normal ping pong game? Not a chance. You can only hit the ping pong ball when you answer the given question correctly. Miss three times, and you’re sabotaged to punch the student council president. *gulps* don’t want to mess with that. The cruel fate eventually lands on Tadakuni, who is unfortunately unable to answer most of the questions. Good luck, buddy.

Back in Japan, our beloved trio spends yet another day lazing around at Tadakuni’s. This time, Hidenori takes on the role of the host of a radio program Talking FS, with Yoshitake as Yosshii C. Tenryuuji, a famous singer/songwriter. As Hidenori reads out questions from imaginary “listeners”, Yoshitake, though, fails to stay in character and answers everything blandly with a straight face, blaming every bad habit of high school boys onto their mothers. Tsktsk, whatever happened to filial piety?

Hot spring fanservice: Danshi Koukousei style

Over the course of the next few weeks, the boys do many exciting things together like going such as having fun at festivals and singing their hearts out at karaoke (while inspirational music aptly plays in the background, mind you). Condensed in less than two minutes, their summer vacation has gone past in a flash. Sigh, holidays always seem to pass so quickly, don’t they?

As a new term begins, our quirky Hidenori has a newfound problem – on the train that he takes to school every morning, he can’t take his eyes off the girl standing in front of him… because of that one strand of hair sticking out of her mole. *sweatdrop* Hidenori experiences a dramatically exaggerated inner turmoil – but then again, what is not exaggerated with Hidenori around? When he finally gathers up his courage and tells her about it, she blushes, but gratefully thanks him for his kindness and skips off. Thus ends the story of a foolish boy so worried about something this stupid.

Hidenori – “I.. I.. actually want to tell you…” Random girl – *dokidokidoki*

“…you have hair growing on your mole.”

After the ending song, we get surprised by a bonus section – JYOSHI KOUSEI WA IJYOU! It also happens to have its own theme music, because high school girls are funny no matter what they do. xD It starts off hilariously similar to how episode 1 did, with someone popping the question, “How do you get a boyfriend?” Then we get introduced to the girls’ team, who also happen to bear an uncanny resemblance to a certain awesome trio. Try guessing what happens next? Yup, the genders are reversed! They decide to try on their elder brothers’ clothes, resulting in awesome laughter… until they are busted by nii-san, who looks as if he is going to be traumatized for life. Indeed, such is the sad life of high school boys, I quote, who have an anime about everyday life showing them do stupid things.

“…why am I even friends with them?”

“O-okaeri, nii-san. I-it’s not like we were using your uniform to do naughty things or anything like that.”

…HAHAHA. I’m really falling in love with this anime. Yes you might say that this episode was generally not as funny as the previous two, but it was extremely enjoyable anyhow! It was like the long-awaited summer vacation episode and the beach episode combined into one! Even in our cold winter season, them boys are giving off such warm vibes over there. xD Ever wondered how high school boys really spend their summer vacation? Well here it is, without all that excessive boobage, in all its glorious epicness. Also, I especially loved that last bonus bit with the high school girls – I wasn’t expecting that at all! It was funny how they did things the boys already did, and seeing how differently (or similarly, actually) they played out was great haha. I really hope we will see them again in future episodes, they have so much potential! (Although they might never match up to our awesome boys.)

To be specific, there was pretty much not a lot of “character development” but hey, this is a slice of life anime! I personally think that the characters were all crafted very well to fulfill their role, which is of course, to do ridiculously silly things and make us laugh xD Each and every one of the characters, including the main trio and even the side characters such as Motoharu, have their own unique personality which make them already considerably entertaining on their own. But it’s when they’re all together as a group, that true hilarity ensues. I truly love the entire team of characters here and the way they interact – they have that sort of easygoing relationship that we envision high school students to have, only that this time we get to see them doing these stupid things with each other. Hehe, I will forever see high school boys in a different light now. xD

When you really listen closely and pay attention, the soundtrack and background music is actually really good. Although it might not have the best arrangement/instruments, but just the different tones add so much depth to the various moods in the different short stories! The insert song “Capsule” was brilliant – I love how it suited the summer vacation summary scenes so well. Also, cheesy lyrics that you would be able to imagine a typical high school boy dedicating to someone he loves, thatissoscute. *searches for song to download*

Yeah, this still holds the spot for the best slice of life anime I’ve ever watched. Weekly laughter pill is bringing lots of joy to my life *w* (Words of a true otaku.) As the anime progresses on with new episodes, this anime just seems to keep getting better and better, and I’m very attached to the main trio and their friends already. ^A^ I think they will continu to introduce new characters to the gang, and that is indeed exciting to look forward to!

Yes! Next week Ringo-chan (girl with blush-sticker cheeks) is gonna be in the anime!

I wish we had more “JYOSHI KOUSEI WA IJYOU” segments. Or interactions of highschool girls with highschool boys. My only complaint is that Literature Girl wasn’t in this episode.

-first the was so much hot steam ^^
-the ping pong match .. where Tadakuni only knew Malaysia !!

Where’s my weekly dose of scary stories?! Man, I wish they would continue with that.

My most favourite part was the girls’ version of daily life and was that a nod at K-On?! Lol. I love this voice of Kobayashi Yuu, when she goes batshit. The usual epicness of Hidenori was there but Tadakuni, you gotta work harder man.

Kobayashi Yuu- The highlight of the entire episode! GOOD GOD She made me laugh so much xD

    • Kyokai says:

She’s like a female Tomokazu Sugita, I swear. xD

PS: Another Gintama reference. She’s Ayame after all.

      • Foshizzel says:

HELL YA! I was like FUUUU Ayame? WUT ARE YOU DOING HERE? And she had purple hair! That has to be a shout out to her chara from Gintama xDD

Things keep getting better and better! True this wasn’t the best comedy episode but there are plenty of gems here, like the mole girl? LOLOL So funny! and a wonderful insert song for the summer event <3

Daily lives of high school girls? HELL YA! I smell a possible spin off in the future! Those three girls wow I died laughing xD

Another episode of laugh to fill my tiresome week~

LMAO. The bitch slap was something new. Hidenori was actually trying to hide his nose bleed with soft drink. The ping pong was also funny. It’s weird to hear Malaysia mentioned in anime. The radio dj part was really awkward. The mole girl’s reaction was totally unexpected. A repeat of ep 1 with girls replacing the main characters was unexpected. Trully, anything done by girls are good.

OMG Summer episode yes!!! Oh these High School Boys sure can entertain! I seriously started bursting out laughing with all the one liners! Especially with Hidenori at the beach! XD. Oh and with Tadakuni in the ping pong table match! Yoshitake is so awesome with saying Obama XD. I loled at that so much!

But yes High School Girls? Please have more of that! They were so entertaining! Just love them too X3

After reading the synopsis and the comments, it’s quite interesting to see that everyone found the same scene funny for completely different reasons.

For example, I laughed at Hidenori’s soft drink mishap because he looked like he was trying to exaggerate his Eureka moment. But, the same scene could be said to be funny if you thought that he was just trying to cover up his nosebleed.

It could be a coincidence, but if that were true, Nichibros would be so deeeeeeep. XD
