Danganronpa 3: Mirai Hen – 02
Oh good. Another witch hunt.
Despite being the Future Foundation, nobody really seems all that hopeful. Though at least a few characters seem to have the right idea, so maybe it’s not all lost. |
There are different rules for the killing game right now, and they seem pretty fun (all things considered). Having a designated killing time makes things interesting. Also, having people unable to perform actions makes things interesting too. Sure, it killed Bandai, but the forbidden actions should be an interesting factor in how the plot progresses. For example, like how Naegi can’t run. That rule seems like it would be something that could clear him of a crime, but it also seems like it will hold him back, since that means people like Munakata will catch up to kill him easier.
But without trials now, it seems like people’s suspicions will only grow worse. It was bad enough that people in the previous games were mistrusting enough to kill each other, but at least there was some kind of relief after the murderer was found out in trials. In this game, the culprit can just keep killing over and over, and from the looks of how the first few episodes were, people will just keep blaming Naegi for it. But at least some people (seem to) believe in him. Gozu and Gekkougahara seem nice enough at least, and it’s nice that some people believe in what they saw him do on the first broadcast. …Unless, of course, one of them killed Asahina.
So once again, Naegi seems like the person everyone will blame for the first murder, and will probably have to go through hell trying to clear his name (as if he didn’t have enough problems already). But on the plus side, this might be easy to convince people that he’s not actually guilty. If someone was trying to frame him, they chose the lowest hanging fruit in doing so. Out of all people he could have killed, why would he chose his biggest supporter, Asahina? It would make more sense for him to target someone who’s trying to actually kill him, like Munakata. If he had the time to grab a knife (unless they tried to take him into custody without checking if he was armed?), he probably had time to kill someone else. Though seeing how unreasonable everyone has been thus far, this might be why he he looks guilty in their eyes. They could just say that he’s trying to trick them into thinking he’s not guilty.
But wow, so much for plot armour. I suppose this is like the initial shock in the 2nd game of when the first victim was “Togami”, with the newest victim being Asahina. She wasn’t quite the first person to go, but she still seems to have died pretty early in the grand scheme of things. But at least Kirigiri and Hagakure are still around. Unless I counted wrong, the initial “16 survivors” number seemed to include Hagakure. …Plus even if he was on the outside, it’s not like he would be much help getting them out of there, right?
It looks like the deaths from the OP seem to be how people will die in the series. There are a few different things though, since Asahina’s clothing seems to be just slightly different than what she died in. Also, it’s kind of hard to tell how Yukizome died, but the blood appears to have come from her wrist in the OP. …Maybe they’ll explain that later, or maybe the differences are to avoid obvious spoilers like “oh, Asahina is wearing a tank top now, so she must be dying soon”.
Nagito took his love of hope a little too far in the 2nd game, and twisted it into a reason to create the worst despair to give birth to the best hope. Munakata and Sakakura seem to be the same with twisting the concept of hope to suit their needs, even to the point of wanting to kill if it’s for the sake of defeating despair. They were bad enough before with asking Naegi to kill himself, but the lowest point for them was probably where Sakakura indirectly killed Bandai, and no one had a reaction of “gosh, maybe we should stop now”. Sure it gave a pretty good example of how the rules on the bracelets should be considered a real threat, but it was still pretty sad that someone had to go that way without the instigator even saying sorry.
Moe moe kyun?
To be fair though, people involved with the Despair side seem to be exceptionally resilient. Almost to the point of ridiculousness, since despite Junko dying in the first game, she’s found ways to (kind of) return in both the 2nd and Despair Girls games. The Future Foundation’s fears are kind of justified (even without them being completely aware of the events of the 2nd game), even if they’re totally being asshats right now. It would be really crazy if there wasn’t really a traitor and they were going to kill each other just out of paranoia, but we’re a little early on to figure out the big picture just yet.
There was a lot more action than the games ever had, but things are pretty interesting right now. Right away, Asahina’s murder is going to change the dynamics of the characters. Plus Naegi doesn’t seem to have Kirigiri around to back him up and talk sense into everyone if they all start yelling at him (or you know, pull out their weapons) again. Hopefully after a bit things calm down enough for them to actually question the situation. If they can break through the floor, why can’t they break through a wall to get out? I have a few things I’d like to know too, like when did they have time to turn all of the TV sets in the building into Monokuma faces? Though that might be something with an answer like “they just did because the power of despair”, so I’m not going to question it too much.

Seriously, it’s frightening how easily humans can be reduced to such irrational, dangerous creatures at the drop of a hat. A single thread pulled and it all descends into chaos.
A quote that couldn’t be truer.
Quite a trade-off in the contrast of the killing games between the first season and this. The absence of trials makes mobility and opportunity more flexible but the mystery behind the forbidden actions, in exchange, applies more pressure on the captives.
Frankly, it won’t be a problem if either Munakata or Sakakura or both end up dead. Both behave in ways that don’t deserve any leniency.
However, the ending left a very sour taste in the mouth. Definitely not happy about it. I hoped none of the surviving characters would get touched but had a feeling of it actually happening. And of all people, it was Asahina!!! The denial upon seeing her corpse was intense. Apart from her clothes, the difference here is, in the OP, she was stabbed in the stomach whereas in the series itself, the knife was taken to her chest.
Apparently, someone hates Naegi enough to put him through the shredder. This feels personal and I think I can see a pattern to how this will go. Those who aren’t outright trying to kill him, the supporters will picked off one after another to further condemn him. Also, forbidding him from running. It has to be that because one of Monokuma’s rules make it clear of the possibility of ending the game without deaths involved.
If one can go, the rest are fair game. Asahina’s death means Kirigiri’s safety’s at risk. Which makes the event itself a blindside, throwing attention off one character for another. The episode’s title is “Hang the Witch” and the OP visuals show Kirigiri dying by a noose.

I think at least Munakata has to survive enough to learn why he’s in the wrong here… Just going from your basic plot standpoint.
That is an interesting difference from Asahina though. I’m pretty sure they killed her for the shock value and to push Naegi even more into a corner, but we’ll see.
The OP also seemed to be pointing to Kirigiri’s death in that scene where she’s falling and Naegi reaches for her, but they don’t connect. Though maybe that means falling into despair or something. At the very least, I’d like to think that her extended presence in the OP means that she’ll be sticking around for a bit longer….

Now I’ve heard Rie Kugimiya voice everything! From boys, girls, adults, psychos, animals, good guys, villains and now she can add buff black dude to that list! Damn she is the best, but RIP her character she will be missed…well the voice not so much the character who was by far the weirdest one I’ve seen.
I’m loving how both Danganronpa series have completely different tones! This one follows more serious stories while the other is straight up comedy and it totally works.
The added X character can’t do this element is so creative! Like no running or witnessing violence? My brother made a comment that they seem to be school rules or is that not the case? Now I’m super curious what the other characters can’t do.
RIP Asahina! I LIKED HER!

Enjoy the comedy while it’s available because since Zetsubou-hen/Despair Arc is a prequel story to both the first Danganronpa season and Danganronpa 3: Mirai-hen/Future Arc, things are bound to go south for the characters.

Don’t forget a loveable suit of armour! I’m going to miss her character just because the gap between character and voice was pretty funny.
Oh, the Zetsubou plot should be getting darker soon. If plot points from the second game are true, then there’s going to be a murder soon! Yaay.
Oh hey, I guess they are like school rules! Though I don’t know if witnessing violence is outlawed at schools so much as performing violence. Haha…
