Valkyrie Drive: Mermaid: Whoa, good thing I opened the spoiler or I would’ve been misled. I was under the impression only the 7th episode was being covered and not the 8th as well going by the header of Valkyrie’s article section.

Always count on this show to bring the kinky, erotic kissing scenes. An award should be presented in that department.

Well, no surprise Akira turned out to actually be a girl. Unlikely given the entirety of the island’s population and her face just kept giving it away. Painfully obvious. Now, to wait for Mamori’s distraught expression when she learns the truth.

The 8th episode really got the plot going. And no, not that kind of plot, of course. There’s an abundance of that at all times so no need to worry. Common knowledge that Mirei was special but I didn’t see a development like her being a modified human coming. It seems no series is safe from the prospect of human experimentation. Lol at her shielding Mamori from Lady and Lady’s erotic kiss session. And she’s the younger one of the two.

Another plus is that blue haired girl frequently shown in the ED finally making her appearence. No brainer she’s Mirei’s old partner so I’m anticipating on how their reunion will go. Bets on it being a bitter one.

…”Now, to wait for Mamori’s distraught expression when she learns the truth.”

Time for Mamori to realize she’s a lesbian. She got turned on and transformed just by seeing two naked women, one of whom was Akira, without any other stimulation. Plus, she’s totally infatuated with Akira the Governor. Her conscious mind thinks Akira is male, but her subconscious knows better.

Yep I got lazy over thanksgiving weekend so I decided to do a double post on Valkyrie, but so far it continues to be entertaining and fun every week! Just as long as Meifong is around LOL

Akira wasn’t fooling any of us! “he” even has an ARM which we know only girls can have sooooooooo yeah! Nice try and poor Mamori she is going to be destroyed later when she finds out, but yeah she needs to realize she likes girls.

At least the story is progressing somewhat~

I am beginning to think Pantsu Sample is a perfectly fine alternative title for Shomin Sample…

Shinmai Maou no Testament Burst – 07 – 08: Tsk. Ignore the haters/hipsters, Fosh. Tournaments can be fun in their own right and given the way the challenge announcement to decide the future of the demon world a few episodes back went, this was the likeliest outcome. A similar fashion in what happened in Yu Yu Hakusho with the Dark Tournament with Toguro as the main antagonist. Bummer we’re down to two remaining episodes.

Surprisingly, Mio held her own with ease and her match ended quicker than expected. I guess those Master/Servant sessions with Basara are indeed proving their worth. A shame Maria and Kurumi weren’t so lucky.

If Basara and Lars are scheming, you know someone will get royally screwed. Zolgia got his just desserts last season and boy, was that satisfying. What’s there to guess now are the conditions of their deal.

A rare occurrence but some respect to the current antagonist, Leohart. Unlike the disgusting Demon Council, he doesn’t engage in trickery to gain wins. The manner of Kurumi’s defeat rubbed me the wrong way. Not to mention Zest getting axed before she could get her match. The idea of Leohart becoming Basara’s ally later on is one I’d like to entertain. He doesn’t strike me as evil at all, let alone someone who’s evil for the sake of it.

    • Foshizzel says:

I know right? Tournaments are great! I guess as long as they have a purpose as to WHY the characters are doing it in the first place and from my experience they are somewhat important. I was totally thinking Yu Yu Hakusho, DBZ, Hunter x Hunter 2011 and there are a few others as well that have a tournament arc.

Yeah Mio has power she just doesn’t use it often which is fine. but she is a bit overpowered; however id rather her be OP than weak as hell.

I get the same vibe from Leohart he doesn’t come off as being evil for the sake of being evil and I could totally see a team up with him and Basara later.

Tournaments in fiction are a complete snooze fest to me. The only real reason to do them is have characters cheat at winning them, which is something you can’t do in real life without consequences. In fiction the author manipulates the outcome they want, so might as well go whole hog and do something you can’t get away with in real life. I recall an essay by comics-writer Kurt Busiek where he got it in the neck for writing an “official” story that Captain America won in a fight against Batman. People bitched to no end stating that there is no way it could be “true”. He replied that fiction is a big lie and he decided that CA won cause that’s what he felt made a more compelling story. If they feel sore about it, they could get into the field and make Batman win in a story…

But yeah, tourneys in fiction are about as appealing as locked-room mysteries are, they just scream loudly at you, “The writer is manipulating shit!” Which is something you don’t want called to your attention when you’re trying to suspend disbelief….

        • Highway says:

This is pretty much my feeling as well. Tournaments are usually not compelling fiction because the outcome is a foregone conclusion. The real-life purpose of a tournament is to find out who is best out of a group. That’s what they’re good at. But in a story, unless there’s a history of the story being willing to play the characters fairly, which they almost never do, then the suspense goes away. The ‘good guys’ are gonna win, or they’re going to lose in an uplifting way, or they’re going to be utterly humiliated so that they can learn a lesson. It takes something very special to be able to make a tournament a compelling story, and it’s pretty obvious that Asterisk and ShinMaou are just not gonna get there.

There is one more reason to do a tournament that occurs to me: pure fanservice, which is what they’re doing with Magical Lyrical Nanoha Vivid.

          • skylion says:

The Negima manga ( I don’t think they ever tackled it in either version of the anime ) did a HUGE tournament arc as one of it’s very early arcs, but it only served as a big multi-character reintroduction, and the story played around a great deal with the ideas of balance; who outclassed who and why etc. It was a big meta commentary on character narratives as well as formalizing all the types of magic the story would go on to use and exploit, and the brackets were just a framework…plus it was fanservice, cause that’s what the mangaka likes, and would you expect less of the guy that did Love Hina?

          • Foshizzel says:

Hey now if you’re gonna complain about tournament arcs Calvary is in that list too.

@Hwy and Sky: Yeah you guys hate tournaments but I recall you both loved that bit in Nanoha Vivid…

            • BlackBriar says:

              + 100 points! And don’t forget Asterisk.

            • skylion says:

…actually, Highway liked that bit, if I recall, I dropped it as I didn’t like the tourny or the fanservice elements…

            • Highway says:

Actually, the tournament was the worst part of Nanoha Vivid. It essentially wasted the last 4 episodes as far as I was concerned. I’m sure for fans of the franchise, it was a lot more meaningful, but it added nothing to the overall story, which just stopped dead right when they started the tournament.

            • Highway says:

And a lot of my point is exactly what you see in Cavalry. How much of the tournament have they shown? Two fights by Ikki (one of which featured another main character). One by Shizuku. And that’s after 7 episodes where the tournament is going on. Cavalry is a show where they are *having* a tournament, but not *showing* a tournament. The fights are all in there for character development, not for fanservice. And the main focus of the show is what the characters are doing outside of the tournament.

We’ll see how Asterisk does with the Phoenix Festa. I’m hoping they make it be about the political intrigue, but so far it’s not, and that’s disappointing.
