First Impression – Himouto! Umaru-chan

This isn’t the incestuous imouto anime you thought it was~

What do you mean you got your fill of first impressions? THERE’S STILL MORE TO BE HAD!! Anyway, Himouto! Umaru-chan is another series I’m familiar with, and I quite enjoyed it, so I was definitely interested in finding out how they did with the adaption~
At first I wasn’t interested at this anime until I saw the summary which literally reflects my life. It’s as if the imouto is me in anime. Maybe I should change my avatar into himouto’s.

Is the writer of this story someone who is frustrated with the lack of free time in Japan or something? Because everything about this anime is what everybody wants in real life. The despicable and annoying himouto, despite of her minus points, is actually perfect in everything. She is pretty, kind (on the outside), smart, does not need to study, yada yada. And yet, she still managed to spend the rest of her days doing nothing but playing a reading Jumpo!. Now obviously this is definitely impossible in real life because perfection requires hard effort, but apparently that’s possible in this anime. This is definitely the kind of life I want, and I’m sure many of us also want this kind of life because who wouldn’t want perfection in life (at least in career) without having to put effort. I want that so that I can spend the rest of my days playing Type-0 because this game is so damn hard and it requires every second of my time.

What I don’t want from this anime, however, is the bro-con personality the himouto has. And damn it they just have to put this in this series too. Although it wasn’t explicitly stated, it’s obvious the himouto is extremely fond of her brother to the point where it’s unhealthy. A lazy person would think that buying groceries would benefit him since there will be free food without having to move an inch, right? But of course himouto doesn’t think that way since her time playing with her onii-chan is waayyy more previous than buying groceries for dinner which is necessary of our goods. And the game can be paused too! But of course, onii-chan is at the top of us himouto food chains so time with onii-chan is above everything else. I am so sick of this kind of stereotype put on imouto. Unfortunately, this kind of stuff won’t stop because this kind of stuff appeals for many people, so yeah…

I’d like to think I’m a lot like Umaru: perfectly normal at school, lazy bum reading manga at home, but unfortunately I am not as cute or as smart hahaha…ANYWAY, I thought this episode was a good summarization of her character, at least at this point in time. We got to see a good amount of both her sides: her super cool “normal” self at high school and her bratty, laze-about-all-day self at home. It’s been a while since I’ve read the manga, and I was surprised at how bratty she came off as because I don’t remember finding her that annoying. I guess it could be the fact she actually has a voice now and it’s not just me trying to imagine what her voice might be. And of course it doesn’t help that they make her voice significantly high pitched. Hopefully they won’t focus too much on how bratty she can be because I’m sure it’ll turn many viewers off (and probably already has).

Yet despite the annoying tantrum scenes, I still actually like Umaru. I think her main appeal is not only the cuteness of her character’s appearance in the hamster cloak (??) and at school, but watching her and relating to some of the ways she acts. Like I found it surprisingly entertaining just watching the snack pairing scene, because I do the same thing (except I’m more found of sweets than chips, etc.) when planning a massive anime/movie marathon. I think it’d be interesting to see a more serious side of Umaru (and her older brother), though I doubt it’ll happen in such a relaxed show.

It wasn’t so bad, actually. I love himouto because she has the ideal life I want, and of course I want to watch my ideal life. But seriously, enough with the excessive bro-con. Having a bro-con is good (since I kind of have a sis-con), but what they’re portraying in anime is definitely not a depiction of the type of bro-con that has been accepted by society. But I’m still going to watch this anyway.

I thought that this was a good first episode. Like I said earlier, we got to see an equal amount of Umaru, as well as get a good peek at the other characters that will be more present later on in the series. Of course with any gag/comedy manga getting turned into an anime there’s the huge risk of the show falling flat, especially with the same type of gags every episode. So for this series, I guess it’ll all depend on how much you like Umaru and want to stick around. Hopefully they WILL include more of the other characters because focusing just on Umaru will get tiring and bland to watch. I’m really interested to see more of the older brother’s life, as well as see how and why Umaru came to live with him (though I assume it might just be because of school). Anyway, that’s all from me! Have a bonus himouto scene~ Show ▼

    Incest is Wincest.

With that out of the way, its like oreimo, except with the main character more yandere than… oh god… it’s the not-so SoL of Ayase and her onii-chan… x_x

    I think I’ve thought too much…

    • Foshizzel says:

no none of that goes down here its pure comedy.

not even close to oreimo, but the manga/anime/gamer side sure everything else you are wrong about sorry no harem antics here.

      Yes…

I am so like Himouto. I’m short and cute and can speak hamster like a boss…

I really like this show. I shouldn’t. It’s annooooying at times. But for some reason I caught the groove just right. Some people want her to tone down. I say tone it UP! Reach for the Crescendo Himouto!

My favorite scene was in the grocery store. She could convey so much without words…

As a manga reader I loved Himouto-san! It always cracked me up even though most people find Umaru to be a giant brat to her brother, but to those people I say that is kinda the point! Yeah it’s quite sad that he lets her boss him around all the time but it still makes me laugh xD

I love the cute chibi designs <3

    • skylion says:

I like how it played around with her “normal” character and the “chibi” character. Especially during her Jumpu! tantrum….that shift was really weird and honest in a strange way.

Sadly, I could only take 8 minutes of Umaru’s whiny tantrums before I gave up. I was hoping someone would tell me later “Oh yeah, she gets better and stops being so irredeemably whiny”, but everyone says “yeah, that’s the way she is.” So I’ll leave this one to you guys.

    • Hoshi says:

~It’s the way she is, but I don’t think the manga shows her throwing more tantrums?? Then again it has been a while since I’ve read this…

  5. JPNIgor says:

    since I kind of have a sis-con

    Wow, what? That’s news.

I definitely enjoyed this. Yeah, she’s annoying when she’s whiny, but her cuteness nulifies it. Oh, but seeing it in the brother’s POV, that’s a nightmare of a sister to have.

And the hamster stack scene, I could laugh at it forever hahahahaa

    • anaaga says:

Oh I’m sure the anime exaggerates the tantrum because adaptation distillation.

And seriously, out of all the things I wrote you actually managed yo catch that sentence?

      • JPNIgor says:

It randomly caught my eye hahaha sorry.

      • akagami says:

Actually… that one line jumped out at me as well ^^.

So I learned from this post that anaaga = himouto, but with a sis-con. That’s been a good lesson.

This wasn’t even on my radar, but after seeing a couple of people’s comments on the most recent episode and how they were surprised to like it, I decided to check this one out.

I think it was halfway around the middle of the OP that I was sold. I normally don’t like deformed characters mixed with normal characters, but for some reason I didn’t mind it here.

I didn’t mind Umaru’s behaviour, although maybe that’s because I have a lil sister who’s spoiled, and that’s all right.

She has good taste with Jun-Piece, and that Chopper figure, hahahaha.

    *shakes fist at spammy*

  8. akagami says:

So getting around to watching this, on the 4th episode. I’m really surprised at how much I’m loving this show.

U M R! The OP is so addictive. I’m really tempted to get the Umaru nendoroid, but I don’t collect nendoroids and wouldn’t know what to do with one.
