Those swimsuits are great!

Welcome back to another fun episode of Houkago no Pleiades! I guess this is a half beach episode since the girls use swimsuits to collect another magical engine part for their little alien friend.

Are the sales of Subarus up from all these lolivertisements?

    • HannoX says:

If not, maybe Subaru should offer cars with one of the girls factory painted on it.

    • Highway says:

It probably doesn’t help much that the sound of the boxer engines that Subaru uses aren’t particularly distinctive, especially when just running constantly. The things that could be distinctive would be things like wastegate chatter (when the throttle is released) or maybe the straight-cut gears of a rally car.

As it is, they just don’t have the individuality of say a Ferrari or Lambo V12, a Jaguar V8, or a Mazda 4-rotor (the orange and green car).

    • skylion says:

Yes. They’ve been in constant contact with me since day one, and it has been exciting, let me tell you. I’ve never seen such a successful promotion. Just yesterday, a dealership sold a lovely Impreza to a nice couple with twins; and those kids eye’s just lite up at the new car! And…..I’ve been told that Zojirushi is working on an magical girl show with Studio Feel! Wow! The girls ride magical rice-making elephants!

  2. Wanderer says:

You’re an episode behind. Are you watching the free releases on CR?

    • skylion says:

How can we be behind when we don’t post, or even have, a schedule!?

      • Wanderer says:

You can be behind by the fact that episode 4 was out before you made a post about episode 3.

        • Wanderer says:

That may not be behind by whatever schedule you are or are not keeping, but the instinctive response by someone who watched episode 4 last night and then came in here this morning to see a post about episode 3 is “Huh. They’re an episode behind. I wonder what’s up.”

          • akagami says:

That’s just you though. I refuse to watch eyecancer subs. So while you may have watched an episode, doesn’t mean everyone else has yet.

    • Foshizzel says:

Yep that is my bad! We record Punchline and Houkago back to back and I posted punch when I should have posted Houkago instead! I will fix this next time sorry about that xD

I thought this was a very good episode. Some responses to your points:

    – Perhaps there’s no reason for them to be split up after they’ve helped the alien. He has shifted them all onto this same worldline, and this episode talked extensively about their possibilities. Perhaps this is putting their potentials onto the same worldline, one which as they achieve their goals and change possibilities into realities will solidify as their future worldline.

    – I think you miss or downplay a significant subtext in Subaru’s conversation with her father. The parts that he brought home are defective parts. They look shiny and fine on the outside, but in reality they are hopeless, with never a chance to fill their intended use or live up to something more. Coming on the heels of the alien telling the girls that they could have great possibilities or no possibilities at all, I could see that idea hitting Subaru hard, as these girls are all somewhat worried about what they’re doing, and whether they are able to measure up.

    – The show is not shy about making these episodes be wonderfully contemplative. It’s not go-go-go all the time. Taking the time to fall to the depths of the ocean, and then to come back down to earth, giving these girls time for reflection. I’m really enjoying the depth they’re allowing it to have.

    • skylion says:

I can see the “possibility” with your first point. I think the essence of what Kaicho Pleiades was saying is: the future is unwritten, and it’s in you hands. I didn’t feel like I missed that subtext, but yeah, in hindsight it was downplayed. But more exact, I alluded to it more than expanded.

    • Foshizzel says:

Probably! I don’t see any “reason” that the girls need to split up unless the have to correct the timelines? That could be a real reason or some of them actually want to? Like take Nanako who seems to be writing things on paper every day after school? Maybe she is researching a way to return to her world and why did the blob alien choose her as his translator?

As Skylion says I don’t think we missed the whole car parts/crying moment with Subaru and her father, but of course we all have different ideas as to what message they were trying to get across to us, I went with the idea of “separate parts don’t do anything by themselves but put them together they can.” or “teamwork”

Yeah this series does a good job of the “engine part of the week” formula with the fun of world building or exploration.

  4. Highway says:

Ok, here I am probably delving into far more analysis than a magical girl show featuring a squooshy alien calls for, but here goes. Thinking more about the “we were moved off of *our* timelines to a common timeline”, this starts to indicate a hugely solipsistic construct. Why didn’t the alien modify the girls all on the same worldline? Why move them from one worldline to another? Does the fact of moving them mean that the ones that are now together are the “true” consciousness of each girl? Or are the ones on those other worldlines somehow ‘tainted’ and have already lost some possibilities, and that’s why the alien picked this particular version of each girl.

There was also quite a ruthless subtext to the alien’s thinking, reinforced by Minato, in that it wasn’t that he thought bringing them together would make 5 awesome magical girls. It was that he was hedging his bets in trying to get one awesome magical girl to do what he needed done.

    • skylion says:

…and that last point lends itself to the “band breaking up” aspect. But perhaps this is how this alien mind thinks; I need to do this job, all tools at my disposal are valid. It’s just that the “tools” are the lives of young people that it hits home in a harsh manner. For the squishy alien, thinking along many different worldlines, futures, pasts, and present at a glance is akin to how we decide what to make for breakfast while doing a quick scan of the cupboard.

      • HannoX says:

Another Kyube? Or perhaps he’ll prove more benign. Perhaps he chose the version of each girl with the most potential and moved them to a timeline where they’ll be able to reach their full potential.

        • Foshizzel says:

That blue cute blob? That is highly unlikely, but Gainax could pull a 360 on his character and give us something creepy! Then again I don’t really get that vibe that he is “using” them to gain something unless the “engine” is in fact a weapon and the redhead guy is trying to prevent that from happening? Now that could be a thing.

  5. Highway says:

Oh, and for no good reason, I like Itsuki the best. 1) I like the name and 2) I like her style, standing up on the DriveShaft.

  6. Namaewoinai says:

Ok now, So the Girls had a capable of changing outfits while on the run…(Heh, Swimsuits alright) and they can enable to breath underwater for a very long time (OK, We already seen enough)

    • skylion says:

Yep, I just read about a future episode where the girls are going to an outdoor bar-b-que, magical happi aprons!

And…Elia is one of my favorite Strike Witches, just behind Sanya…
