Happy Birthday, Highway!

Hwy-bd-2015

It’s some moe party time because it’s Highway’s birthday!

Well, my goodness, time does fly. It’s that time of year again, when old farts get older. But luckily we have the eternal love of all that is anime. It’s just the ticket for when you come from that awkward era known as….The Seventies….Such a strange place, but such good times to be had. Age like a fine vintage, and my very best to you and your this birthday. Have a happy one!

————————————

Happy Birthday, Highway! As one of our oldest writers, I expect the Metanorn team to come up with the best “old fart” etc. jokes to tease you with. You just can’t help but poke fun at someone when they’re getting older. But really, it usually feels no different from the day before so another year older is that bad. You get cake and presents, so it’s not bad at all! Have a good one, Highway. Spend it with your loved ones and enjoy the moment! 😀

————————————

Happy birthday, Highway! I hope life is treating you well. I know today is probably just another day for you at this point, but maybe use the moment as an excuse to treat yourself to something. Anyway, keep up your prolific writing as usual, and stay as opinionated as you’ve always been!

Hwy-bday

Happy birthday, Highway! Hope you have an awesome time with waifuu and some much needed time off. Isn’t it a wonderful thing to have your birthday on a weekend? Always awesome to get some extra time in. Getting older is no fun but then supposedly it’s all about ‘gaining new experiences’. So, keep having fun and rocking on by doing something different on your special day. ヾ(^-^)ノ

————————————–

Yooooooooooooooooooooo Happy Birthday old man err I mean Highway! I hope you have a fantastic day on your real life level up day! So sit back eat some cake and dance to some Love Live music <3

————————————

Happy birthday, Highway! Congrats on making it through another year. Thanks for your consistent work day in day out here. Hope you have a great day of celebration with your family and friends, and may this next year be even better for you!

  1. Joojoobees says:

Anime will keep you young in spirit. Happy Birthday, and best wishes for the anime ahead.

Also, serious props to whoever selected the string quartet image. Nothing says “Party!” like Schubert’s Death and the Maiden.

    • Highway says:

Thanks! I think I’ve kept the young spirit pretty well, and anime certainly helps.

    • Kyokai says:

Hehee, thank you, JJB. I had the same thoughts while selecting this image. Plus Highway is covering Your Live in April with Hyouka being one of his favourite anime so thought it would be a good combination. 😉

  2. akagami says:

Happy birthday Highway! Enjoy your day of achieving another year of enlightenment!

Agree with Joojoobees re: end pic. Hyouka x classical music is a winning combination. Looked up the original and saved~ ヽ(^。^)丿

    • Highway says:

Thank you! I don’t know if anyone ever actually achieves enlightenment, it’s more like it’s thrust upon them, like a shovel to the face. And yeah, the Hyouka pics are very nice. 🙂

  3. Jrow says:

Sorry I missed the post, but Happy Birthday! Hope you have a great day!

  4. Di Gi Kazune says:

    Nyan~ Have a nekomimi musume/otoko. :3

  5. BlackBriar says:

Happy Birthday, Highway! and many more in the future. My condolences for you being subjected to “old fart” jokes. It can’t be helped. 😉 Anyway, cut the cake and celebrate.

  6. JPNIgor says:

Tanjoubi Omedeto! o/ Though I didn’t knew moe stuff was your thing hahaha

    • Highway says:

arigatou gozaimasu! 🙂 I think at this point I can’t deny that I like moe. I certainly like idols and slice of life and romances.

      • BlackBriar says:

Then I guess we have an authority on moe on Metanorn as we have authorities on lolis and mecha.

  7. Highway says:

Thank you all for the kind wishes. Some people say that it sucks getting old, but I’m in the camp that says that the alternative is worse. 😉 I’m not ready to go visit Decim and Chiyuki yet!

I even got a present, in that the Love Live! petit nendoroids that I ordered back in September arrived today! So I spent some time getting them out of the boxes. 🙂

    • skylion says:

Pics! Or you just making it up!

    • Di Gi Kazune says:

Building an idol unit eh? 🙂

    • JPNIgor says:

Woah, that’s been about half a year ‘-‘ How could you stand waiting for them?

      • Di Gi Kazune says:

Because we are dedicated. My Snow Miku 2014 was preordered in Feb, arrived 6 months later. Standard turnaround times are about 3 to 6 months. Still waiting for my Shiro.

        • Highway says:

I dunno if it’s dedicated for me. Pretty much everything I order is on a whim, coming up as a special at Crunchyroll. And you just have to realize that if you want something, you have to preorder it. That’s just the way the manufacturing works: They aren’t going to make a whole bunch of things that aren’t already sold. Production is limited to the preorders plus a very small number of extras to sell in stores. That keeps the merchandise limited, allows the prices on the ones in the store to be set high, and keeps the inventory that stores have to carry low.

          • Di Gi Kazune says:

To wait 6 months is dedication. It is sad to still see many boxes of Akari and Seira in the stores and that we will never see Luna and Ginka. 🙁

          • akagami says:

Hmm, I never knew about the pre-order availability. So how do you know if a figure/nendoroid/etc. is any good without seeing it in person? Do you just take a look at pictures, and take a leap of faith?

            • Di Gi Kazune says:

              Both.

GSC generally has quality on their side although I do complain about the builds. (if you’re interested, see my blog for the details.)

A lot of these figures have their previews at Wonfest and the other figure hobbyist shows before they even get into production. Figure collectors take their hobby seriously. These models do not come cheap and I doubt any of the makers would put out something shoddy. (Exception: that horrifying Sader figure… brrrrr….) Especially when we are talking low volumes as Highway has mentioned. Usually preorder sites have a 360 view (and sometimes upskirts) of the figure. They’re pretty accurate. You don’t alienate your already small base of customers.

How you chose a figure you like is basically down to personal tastes. As an example, I like Kasugano Sora. I got the Alter figure of her, quite a simple sculpt. GSC has two version of her in a China dress sitting in a chair. Seductively. I don’t like the pose, therefore I don’t get. Other may actually like it. So it’s all down to personal preferences.

And for you BB, the level below the Top Level of Magical girls. The vampire level. As you requested. Ignore the teddy.

FYA Vampire LOLis! (and nekomusume… and a demon… and an angel…)

            • akagami says:

              Hmm, good to know.

I don’t have any real figures (only got one shoddy One Piece one from who knows where). Wanted to get a real one as I’ve seen several I’ve liked, but if I’m going to shell out that much cash and have it imported, I want to have a good idea of what I’m getting.

            • Highway says:

For me, I’ve only gotten nendoroids. They’re relatively cheap (the ones I get have all been around 35 dollars US), they’re cute, and they’re not overly sexualized. I am a guy in his mid-40s and married, so I’m just not going to get something like this Akeno Himejima figure, and I’m certainly not going to spend 100 bucks on it.

And mine have all been accidents of opportunity, really. I do subscribe to the CR deal email, and usually they put the new figures for pre-order on sale there at least once. When it comes up, I take a look and decide if I want to get it. They *always* have full pictures of the example if it’s a preorder, close in with detail. I haven’t been disappointed in any of the four (Tohka Yatogami, Maou, Miss Monochrome, and Tsubasa Hanakawa) + 10 (Love Live! Sore wa Bokutachi petits, plus Akiba Maid Minalinsky) figures I’ve gotten, although I totally suck at putting nendoroids in cute poses. The one I was closest to buying but didn’t was Shinku.

            • Di Gi Kazune says:

That is still a safe figure. Unsafe, well, there is google.

            • Highway says:

I didn’t need an example of a figure that was obviously one I wouldn’t get. I was trying to show that what some people would call ‘safe’ is not something I would consider getting.

            • akagami says:

So I finally decided to go for it and join the world of figures~

But it sure is a pricy hobby…

Most of ones I looked are are on the lower end of the price scale, like ones from Banpresto, Sega, Bandai. Still expensive though. Was so hard to pick, because there are so many good ones!!! And I’m limited by my weak budget.

    • Kyokai says:

Good to know you had a good one and got a much awaited Love Live to boot! 🙂

    • BlackBriar says:

I’m not ready to go visit Decim and Chiyuki yet!

Who is ever ready to visit those two?
