Akame ga Kill! – 10

THE POWER OF CLEAVAGE COMPELS YOU!!!

This week on Akame ga Kill: sexy time with Esdeath.

Hunters Assemble

Cool guys don’t look at explosions.

…just kidding. Sorry guys, no sexy time here. Although there’s definitely plenty of Esdeath fanservice to whet the appetites of the masochist crowd out there. More on that later. So this episode was pretty interesting for other reasons in my eyes. The main thing is that Tatsumi gets a peek at the capabilities and some of the abilities of the newly-formed Jaegers. This is pretty big as he’s able to report back to Night Raid and eliminate a lot of the element of surprise that the Jaegers might have been able to leverage against them. Of course, I don’t doubt that what little Tatsumi witnessed barely scratches the surface of what each Jaeger is capable of. But at least now Night Raid has a general idea of their powers. Which should help level the playing field a bit, as the Jaegers know as much about the capabilities of Night Raid’s own relics and have greater numbers.

Joke’s on you, buddy.

Speaking of numbers, we last saw Najenda out recruiting new members for Night Raid. I wonder if this will be necessary in the end though. If I count correctly, Night Raid has six members while the Jaegers have seven. But the cliffhanger of this episode has Dr. Stylish sniffing out Night Raid’s hide out and presumably launching an all-out attack on his own. Bad idea. Very bad idea. Ganging up on the Jaegers one at a time is perhaps the easiest way for Night Raid to take them out. And Dr. Stylish has just created such a scenario with himself. So I fully expect him to bite the dust once next week rolls around. Admittedly, that’s kind of a heavy-handed way to even the numbers. But Dr. Stylish’s potential blunder could effectively serve as a sort of foil to Tatsumi’s own shrewd decisions this episode. It’s great to see the guy learn a thing or two and realize that there are times when it’s better to run and live to fight another day than to make a reckless suicide attack. Hopefully he continues to grow and mature along these lines as the show goes on.

These two have their work cut out for them.

Moving on, it’s worth mentioning Wave as he appears to serve as Tatsumi’s counterpart in the Jaegers, which Kara noted last time. The two definitely share similarities down to their backgrounds, their personalities, and even their relics. Now, the same kind of comparison can be made between Akame and Kurome for more obvious reasons. But Wave is more fascinating because he appears to be a genuinely nice guy. He just seems to be a bit misinformed about Night Raid’s motives and methods. So I can see him possibly turning sides somewhere down the line. On the other hand, I fully expect that the situation between Akame and Kurome can only end in bloodshed; the two just don’t see eye-to-eye. Which is compelling in its own right due to the sheer tragedy of such a development. But it’s nothing quite as complex as watching a character question his beliefs and reach the conclusion that he’s been fighting for the wrong side. The day Wave switches sides is probably the day Esdeath ices him though, assuming such a thing happens.

Bad Romance

Esdeath demonstrates the power of actions over words.

Ok, I’ve ignored the big guns for long enough. Let’s talk about Tatsumi and Esdeath for a bit. Quite frankly I was very surprised that Tatsumi had the balls to say such questionable things to Esdeath. His naiveté really shines through if he thinks he can get her to change sides by asking “nicely,” much less by demanding that she change her tune as a token of her affection for him. The latter attempt, I might add, she turned back around on him in a wonderful display of character. I almost had to applaud her for that despite her being the bad guy. Anyway, if he had been anyone else, Tatsumi’s ass would have been a popsicle by now. But instead all he gets is a terse rebuke and a slap from Esdeath. Which is followed shortly by some licking. Yeah. Most likely this strange display is a result of Esdeath attempting to reconcile her usual big stick methodology with the desire to dangle a carrot (or some hot cans, for that matter) in front of Tatsumi. I guess some might call it cute. You know, like that gap moe shit that’s all the rage nowadays.

Tatsumi isn’t too thrilled about the arrangement.

Personally, I don’t find Esdeath’s love for Tatsumi convincing. This is partially because the whole affair smells of an awfully convenient plot device which was obvious enough to see coming a mile away. But more importantly, I feel that Esdeath treats Tatsumi less like a human being and more like a small animal from which she desires to elicit Pavlovian responses. If she wanted a pet to dote upon, she could have more easily obtained a dog. Sure, a dog won’t win a war for her like the hand-raised general of her dreams. But neither will Tatsumi if we get down to it. At the end of the day, the two are just such an awkward and impossible couple, held together only by the very novelty of that fact and by the hopes and dreams of Esdeath fans around the world, that I do not see any way for it to work out. I’d sooner believe Tatsumi get together with one of the Night Raid girls. And even that is hard-pressed to happen, considering he seems to be cemented in his role as boy toy by Leone, comrade by Akame, and pack mule by Mine.

Juicy Extras

Well, this post ended up being longer than I expected again, so I’ll make the conclusion short. Boobs.

If she is a hunter, Tatsumi is her prey.

You know, I believe Esdeath when she says she is in love with Tatsumi. It’s not that odd a thing. And it’s endearing and funny and also very tragic.

    • Sumairii says:

I don’t doubt Esdeath thinks she’s in love. I’m just skeptical that what she really feels is love.

      • BlackBriar says:

It’s premature to fully call what she’s feeling “Love”. At this point, I’d say it’s more like a high school crush of some sort.

The power of cleavage is not compelling here.

    Pettanko is teh win!

You know, Spammy, I used to be in the Navy. In the old days they had this thing called keelhauling. Do we need to keelhaul you? If so, rather than from port to starboard it’ll be bow to stern–on an aircraft carrier.

    • BlackBriar says:

If Spammy was so easy to be dealt with, we’d be at ease a long time ago. He’s a persistent scamp.

Well, talk about a twisted development. If the Jeagers weren’t the present antagonists and off their rockers, I’d say Tatsumi wouldn’t have a problem fitting in. He’d easily be best buds with Wave.

I’m not saying Esdeath isn’t capable of loving someone. It’s just that as things stand, she’s being one sided about it. Focusing on just her feelings and not considering those of who she’s infatuated with. Like clashing ideals with Tatsumi. A balance is needed to make a relationship work so I’m curious about how that will progress. At least this shows some part of her is still human instead of being completely viewed as a cold blooded sadist. She might actually hesitate if she sees him on the battlefield.
