First Impressions – Sword Art Online II

Kirito is back to play another damn VMMORPG!

The world is filled with two kinds of anime fans whenever this anime series is mentioned ranging from those who seriously love it and those who hate it! As for me I kind of sit in the middle because there are certain aspects that I enjoy from Sword Art Online like the use of different styles of online games like the first arc that focused heavily on melee weapons while the second arc tossed in magical elements and now with the start of this new season we jump into a first person shooter VMMORPG which to be honest has me feeling quite curious.

————————————

DEATH GUN! LOL. I am actually quite happy the show got a sequel. To me it had an interesting mix of daily life, action, adventure and romance. It’s true for some that wasn’t a winning formula, but I remember very fondly looking forward to it each week. Will the same experience be in the mix this time around? Well, let’s see…

————————————–

Yes, SAO’s back, and with it, unfortunately to my view, a lot of the complaining and derision. But is it really that bad, or is it more that it’s the designated kicking horse?

————————————–

Yeah, I’m kind of on the fence about SAO as well. It has it’s stupid moments, but I find it totally watchable provided that you just don’t think about things too hard. …Plus I just read chapter 16.5 yesterday. Really, things can only improve from there.

——————————————

Death Gun Goes Pew Pew

SAO2 (7)

420 blaze the VMMORPG has hit some high sales records!

After the first mention of the all-powerful death gun I seriously could not stop laughing because it just sounds really stupid to me because aren’t all guns capable of killing you? Also don’t even get me started on the scene where the bullet comes out of the Ethernet port to assassinate the player in the real world?! That was just insane and for some reason it just came off as comical to me even though I know everyone will say that was just Kirito’s mind over thinking the situation of how the player died in the real world. So for us select few of gamers out there watching SAO2 what kind of game would you compare GGO to? For me the closest games that come to my mind are Destiny and maybe a bit of PlanetSide 2 or you could just throw in any FPS that allows you to team up with other people online, but since this is more of an introduction episode we didn’t really get to see how the game was really like until the very end. So was anyone else curious to see how A-1 Pictures would animate all the crazy FPS moments in GGO like me? I will say just based off one quick scene we got in the episode I think we will be seeing a lot of ass shots of Shino sniping people much like Yoko from Gurren Lagann which is not really a bad thing at all and while that part looked epic and cool I will say the world around the characters honestly looked really horrible! I guess we might see some improvement later but for now it didn’t look that great or was that the idea? I think A-1 Pictures is focused more on presenting the characters to us instead of worrying about the environment around them for now.

Asuna And Kirito Are Back

SAO2 (8)

Twin LOLi’s for Skylion~

So, after a minor bit of hype on my part, I settled in to watch the show. I kinda LOL’d when they took the Kamiyan character out that quickly. I guess VA’s can slum around? But for all that bit of hype, the show never really took off for a first episode. While it is true we get some decent exposition, I thought that would have been best served tossing it into the action. The original did have it’s fair share of info dumps, but they usually take place in or after the combat scenes. It gave them room to breathe, something I don’t feel this episode did…or, I just have to admit that Yui explaining things is ten times better than government network security guy doing the same thing.

At any rate, it was great to catch up with Asuna and Kirito. So, it’s one year after they escaped Aincrad? Looks like they’ve been taking things pretty easy with their relationship. And if the amount of dialogue they spent on how the two dressed is any indication, it seems the blues of that captivity have, more or less, been worked out. It helps attending a special school that allows them to catch up and maybe avoid a lot of public notice. It lets them plan for the future. Seems that Kirito is interested in the tech side of things, like how to bring the full dive experience to the every day. It’s all about the data. Real life, it seems, has infinite processing power, and more than enough memory..So, with the right technological advances, you can blur the line between the two. Like bringing a character from the game world to the real world. This leads to Asuna hoping that Yui could become a real girl. Now, I don’t know about you but a machine that can make LOLis…..is….Well, I’ve seen Battlestar Galactica and it’s prequel, Caprica. I might not want to go there…

I know quite a bit will be talked about in so far as the game rules for GGO and the goofy new trick on how this game can kill people IRL. But for me, I was quite taken about by how much detail they went into with the whole Imperial Palace Gardens; the security system, how it’s cut off from the rest of the city. Sure it’s interesting, but what was it doing here? I’m smelling a touch of foreshadowing here. So what did everyone think of GGO being a pro gaming experience? I for one would love to make that kind of cash. To bad I really suck at games. Looks like we need the OP MC. Who doesn’t feel himself on that level. Really now? I guess he really is trying to forget his experience from the original show….

Multiple Storylines

SAO2 (4)

The couple is back

I liked the split in the first episode here. We had a reminder of the closeness of Asuna and Kirito, with a nice discussion about Kirito’s future and his hope to make a much more immersive Augmented Reality. And despite the harem ending of the first series, I think this one-year later timeskip shows that there’s really only the OTP of the series, and that Suguha, Silica, and Lisbeth are really just not in the picture except as friends. They literally weren’t in the picture this episode, not shown at all, just mentioned.

I also liked that we found out about Death Gun in this first episode, and while I might have done better with a little less of Mr Exposition explaining the whole thing, it didn’t drag it down too much, and I thought it contrasted well with the location, in a fancy restaurant disturbing the other patrons, especially with Kirito in his black outfit. The setup of Kirito being able to be an effective spy is a little bit farfetched, but that was well pointed out by Kirito in that he’s way behind those other guys. But we’ve seen that he’s got the ability to learn and achieve quickly, so it’s not completely out there. Besides, isn’t that the plot of every James Bond movie there’s ever been?

Undercover Kirito

SAO2 (6)

I hope Shino becomes a kick ass girl!

Well, the big thing here seems to be that the new game Kirito is going to be playing is more of a mass shooting game as opposed to the normal VMMORPG worlds he seems to be familiar with. …Though looking at the ending of the episode, it appears that Kirito is going to be bringing a lightsaber sword to this gun fight. Normally this would probably be a bad idea, but considering that this is Kirito, the great god of gaming or whatever, he’ll probably find a way to kick everyone’s ass and gain a couple more harem members along the way. Sawashiro’s single moe female character among the world of men in army gear definitely seems the most likely candidate. Though of course, the one true OTP of the show would be Asuna, as they made sure to clarify in this episode. As much as I joke about Asuna being the perfect waifu, I honestly don’t mind that the series has her together with Kirito.

Or maybe we should start calling him “Kiriko”? As also shown in the ending of the episode, he’s either a girl in this round, or his RPG characters just keep getting increasingly feminine for some reason (he was what, a fairy in the last game world?). I suppose it would make for a better disguise if they’re going to attempt to keep Kirito undercover. …Maybe just barely though, since he seems to want to stick to his image of wearing black and dealing with swords. On the other hand, everyone else seems to like wearing black or dark shades of grey in this game, so I guess we’ll see. Really, the only people with semi-original designs are the Sawashiro character and the Kamiyan character (who was offed rather quickly OTL). Though that should make the important characters easy enough to pick out.

Extra MMO Guns!

Show ▼

End thoughts

Other than the lack of game stuff in the first episode I guess Jesus-Kirito-sama will be putting on his virtual helmet of awesome to save yet another VMMORPG from evil people who have nothing better to do other than kill players in the real world because nobody else has what it takes to become a pro gamer than Jesus-Kirito-sama! So what did you enjoy about the first episode of SAO2? I can’t wait to see more of Shino and dat ass of hers with each passing episode.

All in all I think they did a good, workable, job of setting us the series. I would have preferred more action, and a better balance of exposition. Seriously, that middle bit with whatshisface nearly put me to sleep. I liked how they are building Kirito and Asuna’s characters more, and I cannot wait for Sawashiro’s character to make a full debut. And for the guns vs. sword fights!

I didn’t have any issues with this opening episode. Like a lot of sequels, it didn’t spend too much time reminding us what happened in the past, which is fine, but I think it also didn’t strand anyone who hadn’t followed it before. I also didn’t think there was anything particularly ludicrous about it, certainly not any more than any other anime. To be honest, I think a lot of the complaining about SAO, both the first and second series, is people trying to wobble . Now, granted, I’m probably in the ‘loves everything’ side of that argument (at least in what I write about, there’s plenty of stuff I don’t like that I don’t publicly complain about), but I really think SAO’s biggest problem is that people like it. We’ll see how this season goes, but I’m expecting a lot of things to be the same as the first season.

Well, it was interesting to see that Kirito has some sort of plans for the future. I wish I had a better tsukkomi for Asuna taking the perfect waifu route and saying that her only plans for the future involve being with Kirito, but I don’t. As for the rest of the episode, it was more of the same, really. As far as I’m concerned, that’s a good thing. I wouldn’t call this anime “terrible”, but more… average? It’s not the anime that saves anime or anything, but for a bit of entertainment, this is perfectly watchable.

I can’t be hyped for this simply because I already read the light novels. Since this part of the series has a large part being a mystery, the fact that I know the end takes the fun away. I’m going to watch this because I liked this arc, but knowing how faithful they were with the last adaptation I know what I am in for.

    • skylion says:

It really is a hard thing to go along with isn’t it. I knew how the first arc of Black Bullet would end up after reading the manga. So I stopped reading any material until the show was nearly over.

But I don’t blame anyone for reading on and on. And thanks for coming to Metanorn, bobob!

I found out about you guys through anivision, and them through AAA podcast. I’m just going down the grapevine of anime coverage.

I’m holding you to that motto. There had better be triple chocolate bundt cake in the menu or complaints will be filed.

SAO returns. I still maintain my middle ground position on the perspective of this series. It has its ups and downs yet that doesn’t mean it isn’t a good watch. Inadequate how the title can still have “Sword” when the animated arc is called “Phantom Bullet”, isn’t it? It’s mostly going to be guns, the game is called “Gun Gale Online”. Even the tournament is called “Ballet of Bullets”. Really… 😉

An info dump was alright this time around. Good that most of the suspicions on the player’s deaths were talked over immediately to be pushed aside so the new arc can start in earnest. The way the deaths are fashioned sounds like something straight out of The Matrix. Well, for those who’ve seen the film. Seems the story is trying to say Kirito is cursed to be involved in dangerous MMORPGs.

If I could do the same as the pro players and earn real money by playing a game, I’d be on it nearly 24/7. Going through the tutorials would be more than worth it because the goal is too tempting to ignore. Personally, I’m eager to see what kind of person Miyuki Sawashiro’s Shinon is. Right now, after watching so previews, enigmatic and ruthlessly efficient are the only descriptions I can give regarding her. From the looks of it, her ranking is between novice and pro. My bet’s definitely on middle class.

The Kirito x Asuna ship is sailing again. I’m still put off how much Asuna’s personality was impacted in the second half of last season. She was so independent and badass in the first, even with Kirito by her side. Now that respectable beauty’s been reduced to nothing more than a frail girls ready to become a damsel in distress in a moment’s notice. Makes it difficult to acknowledge it’s the same female. Such a shame.

    • Foshizzel says:

Well SAO is the brand name so they will probably just stick with that instead of re-naming the series completely, but yeah I do agree the “sword” part doesn’t fit when there are guns involved! that and Kirito has a lightsaber from the ED LOLOLOL WUT.

I didn’t like the info dump at all! I mean thankfully I read some of the novel so I already knew how Kirito got recruited to jump into GGO and I know why Shino started playing GGO as well.

reminds me of League of Legends teams or even the World of Warcraft Arena teams playing for real prize money and making lots, but those players live and breath whatever game they are playing because they have sponsors which means countless matches for hours and weeks on end just to train before a big tournament! it sounds rough even though were like its just videogames right? That takes a lot of dedication imo.

Now you can kind of see why Kirito is a girl in GGO instead of his normal male self! Hes gotta avoid getting more girls into his harem…just kidding! I am sure there is another reason completely right? I just hope Shino doesn’t fall for his girl side thinking “oh it must be a girl in real life? Awesome! I should ask her out!” cause they did romance between Asuna x Kirito followed by incest Leafa x Kirito and why not throw in yuri between Kirito and Shino? for this arc? LOL

      • Di Gi Kazune says:

        A trap is fine too!

      • skylion says:

It reminds me a bit of when I was asked to be part of a store sponsored MtG Pro team; just around the time I started to hate playing that game…

      • thorgriim says:

Well in most games I play as girls, because well something good to look what when your killing and owning things, oh and sometimes people will help you out aww how kind..Just long as you don’t step over the line to actually pretend to be a girl. With that in mind I wounder if Kirito will act like a girl, sound like a girl, and well be a girl it will be fun to watch if his personality changed as well lol

  4. belatkuro says:

To be honest, I don’t really care much about the hate on this show. It’s their opinion after all and I respect it. I have some shows I dislike that people like as well. What I don’t like is others insulting people who like this show. Insulting other people’s taste is as low as it can get and does not prove your own taste is superior to theirs. Just saying.

That said, the second season is off to a decent start in my opinion. It was dialogue and exposition heavy so others might not like it but it’s a set up for things to come. We already got a sneak preview of Jedi Trap Kirito on the OP so this episode is a set up for that.
Some might roll their eyes on Kirito using a lightsaber in a game about guns but it’s better to stick to your strengths rather than learn a new thing and suck at it. Kirito’s purpose in going in GGO after all is to stand out and be noticed by Death Gun and what better way is be unorthodox. And the thing he does is only possible because of the system of the guns on GGO, which is also connected to that Agi stat debate at the start of this episode. More of this will hopefully be explained later.

Let’s hope that, given that it’s 2-cour, it will be handled better given the amount of material that it will cover. Wonder if it will dip in to the content of volume 9. There’s one place there that’s sure to give everyone a heart attack if it ends at that point. It depends on how they pace the following episodes so I can guess whether they will or will not go there. We’ll see.

Summer surprisingly is going off strong despite the popular notion that it’s the weakest season. Go figure.

    • Highway says:

With that AGI stat debate, I thought they were talking about hunters in WoW. 🙂

And I’m with you about shows that one doesn’t like. It’s fine to like what you like and not like what you like. It’s the ad hominem of ‘you like X so you must have bad opinions / smell bad / be a neanderthal’ and such that’s problematic.

      • skylion says:

That and sometimes it rather does cover up something you might have gotten had you not had a prejudice…

    • Foshizzel says:

Yeah I suppose ill be the one “hatin” every other week, but from what I keep hearing about GGO is its the BEST thing ever for SAO and I really hope they can prove me wrong tht SAO 2 is not THAT bad I mean its watchable I just hate some of the characters and the fact that Kirito is god at videogames! I am sorry but even pro players who make money playing games fail cause were human and yeah I know he is a fictional character and all but come on! I want to see him lose a few times! That said I know someone will bring up the fact that he lost Asuna after beating SAO and hes experienced defeat like that.

Jedi trap Kirito made me laugh! Oh course he brings a sword into a game that uses guns or are swords backup weapons?? I will roll my eyes if he is the only one with a sword…

    So…

When was season 2 for Log Horizon coming out again?

    • skylion says:

Fall of this year. It should make for some fun talks…

    • belatkuro says:

October. Both shows will air at the same time since this is 2-cour.
And it’s airing at the same time as Mahouka now. This show just can’t take a break.

    • BlackBriar says:

Log Horizon Season 2 is set for Fall 2014. If SAO S2 is two cour, we’ll have two video game based series on our watch list.

    • Foshizzel says:

LIVIN IN THE DATABASE WOW WOW WOW!

    • Di Gi Kazune says:

More Nyaanta and his lethal mapo tofu… wait the end of that sentence belongs to a difference show. I still await the day Nyaanta destroys the entire game world. 😛

Before Spammy is just a troll, but now he/she/it may as well be a nightmare incarnate.

      • BlackBriar says:

We’ve been witnessing Spammy’s evil evolution.

        • Di Gi Kazune says:

We have a resident pokemon trainer here? Never knew that…

          • BlackBriar says:

Sure we do. He goes by the title of “Spammy Tamer”. Spammy must have been traded and the trainer must still be inexperienced so he continues to disobey and run wild.

  7. anaaga says:

Going to watch this anime just for Kirito x Asuna. Funny how the anime I don’t like has the kind of romance I like the most (harem, but with actual pairing)

    • BlackBriar says:

Sounds like you’ve found a sweet and sour series for the season.

      • anaaga says:

I know right. Sometimes I hate myself for being such a masochist, but an actual couple in a harem (and the main character too!) show is something so rare I just have to follow it. And they even have virtual babies.

      • Foshizzel says:

Sounds like you’ve found a sweet and sour series for the season.

        same

    • Highway says:

I’m not sure which I like better, Harem with a main couple, or just a main couple (or a bunch of couples), but I like all of them. 🙂

  8. zztop says:

Kawahara Reki, SAO’s creator, once said in an interview that he wrote Kirito as a more confident version of himself. Especially since the real him took 6-7 years to muster the courage to resend SAO to the LN contest that got it published

    • Highway says:

It’s nice that he admits it. Quite a few protagonists are author wish fulfillment, I think it’s fine when the author acknowledges it.

    • Foshizzel says:

I don’t know if I should laugh or feel sorry for the dude because if he believes he is kind of like Kirito then wow! I play games and stuff to but do I have a harem? Nope LOL but I suppose it does take some guts to admit that so good for him I guess?

      • skylion says:

At some level kinda believe that I am one of my protagonists in one of my stories. It really does have to start somewhere.

  9. Wanderer says:

Ah, Phantom Bullet. Sinon may have a cute butt, but frankly I love her more as a character (she’s my favorite character in the series). I hope they do her justice.

PS: Kirito x Asuna is still OTP, however. That has never really been in question, nor should it be. When I read the story of their relationship in the right order (which is not the same as the order the stories were published in) I found it to be quite sweet and touching. In my opinion, anyway.

    • Foshizzel says:

I felt that Shino was basically a Yuki Nagato clone from Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuuutsu especially in the real world, but inside the game she was kind of a badass I just hope she doesn’t fall into Asuna status aka damsel in distress who needs to be saved by Kirito.

Yeah that OTP has been set in stone for a long time.

Er… I am not shure if you guys remember me, i am the guy who wrights a ton of text all toghether without one paragraph!

I used to coment here every now and them, until my cellphone got stolen (my hole family lives on smartphones, none of us use a computer over a year), when i bought a new one more or less a month a go a just had soooooo many things to do that i didn’t iven could get into my anime stuff,
I’ve came here sometimes and thought about comntanting however i never got the words to explain why i left in first place (LOL i just feel the need of explaining myself)

Well that been said, i am tryng to put all my otaku stuff back together, what i recently watched is here, just in case anyone would like to know:

Fate/zero: loved! Loved! Loved! This is on top of my list because oh sweet jesus urubotcher is a plot god! I feçt deeply in love whit irisviel got sooo sad when she died just *snif* let’s not talk about it ok?

Zetsuen no tempest: AMAZING i am a sucker for shakespeare since my mother read to me some of them books’s when i was five! The only bad thing i can come up whit this is that they never mentioned whinter tale or macbeth! Whitch i toghidn’t would be realy fithing to the plot!

All Kara no kyoukay movies: Now i am gonna say i think i didn’t realy got the hole point of the story it just felt to complicated to me! However i really enjoyed what i understood more than that the way eatch story is just presented to the viewer in sutch a natural way is just, amanzing, i feel like i am loking at a animal stiil just out of the wild in all its strong beauty if that makes any sense! My favorite for shure would be paradox spiral, i realy did liked mirai fukuin thought. And bisode all that, oh… yuki kaji os amanzing isn’t she?

Fate stay night: there’s not Allot to say here. But that i. Hated it From beginig to end! So.mutch potential! And yet it just came out in such a dumm way…

Paycho pass: why i can’t marry gen urubochy? Tell me? Why?
Where do i even begin? The philosic vision of mental decomposition, the deep implication of theory of plato of the world of ideas that was represented by the true form of the sybil sistem! The way moral standarts are completely thrown out of the window and then kiled and them deeply disected just to be revived and them of course at the end kiled again. Oh well

    • Foshizzel says:

I kinda remember the user name so welcome back and damn sorry to hear about your phone…

  12. jimbobi says:

I think that SAO really is a good show in so many ways, and brilliance always draws fiery criticism. One of the things I admire so much about this show is it brings up old concepts and puts such a new spin and style on them they become unrecognizable. A game in VR with real-life stakes, we’ve seen it in novels, comics and Hollywood but SAO makes it interesting again. Makes it new.

I was happy to see Asuna and Kirito together again, and though Kirito’s part of getting to the bottom of the GGO mystery is clear, I’m wondering what role Asuna will take? RL backup support? Pretty intrigued by the new Sinon – though what she said suggested she isn’t ‘new’ to fighting in this VR world at all. So yeah, an exciting new premise is established, hints have been dropped about where the plot could be going and Death Gun is promising to be a tricky opponent to say the least. Amped up for episode two! Thanks for a great review guys!

    • skylion says:

I’m much the same mind as you; I felt it has a touch of everything needed to entertain me. I always looked forward to new episodes.

  13. d-LaN says:

Wait a sec… Doesn’t the twins resemble someone or two a bit too much? Easter egg/teasing for LN readers?

I certainly don’t remember conversation with Kikuoka were this hilarious in the LN. The scene were he went on the floor and beg Kirito not to leave done me in XD

And well, since I read the LNs so I don’t have much to say except that my expectations were met and hopefully they did a better job this time. I don’t remember the talk abt the palace security is in the Ln though? Or I am just forgetting details again.

Also the design for Yamikaze made me go “whut” when i first saw it. Its rather…. weird but it makes sense given how most avatars looks thuggish in GGO.

    @Fosh
Since I love post apocalyptic scenery so sadly we have to disagree about the backgrounds. The IRL backgrounds also looks passable/OK to me as well. (I really need to reread Phantom Bullet again)

    • skylion says:

I think you would be able to tell us better if the twins were an easter egg. To me they look a touch like Ram and Rom from Nepgear Animation.

  14. JPNIgor says:

    Booooring first episode.

I’ve read the LN and I’m aware that the start of the original work is exactly like this, but it’s already hard enough to read a long and unengaging conversation, and watch is ten times boring. They could’ve made the first episode better. They could’ve introduced Sinon earlier in the episode, in the middle of the conversation and if time is a problem, they could’ve fragmented her scene into three or four parts and scatter it throughout Kirito and government guy conversation. You don’t have to make everything exactly like the LN.

To me, one of the problems of the LN is that they took too long to throw Kirito in the action. Of course, seeing the real life is great and all but half of the first volume was used for exposition’s sake only. That would be around 3/4 episodes of the show.

About GGO’s setting, it’s a post-apocalyptic Earth ravaged by a war, so most of the “hunting areas” are big wastelands and there won’t be much more to it, the city is called SBC Gurouken, a big spaceship that landed on the planet. It was way fancier and less gothic on my mind while reading the LN. I made a very unlikely theory that maybe the place shown in the first scenes of the episode is not GGO, but another VRMMORPG. Why? Because what is shown on the “TV” is the MMO Today (?), an online program that can be watched in all of the VRMMORPGs made with the The Seed.

About the game, I agree that it looks a lot with the concept of Destiny, and if I were to name another game… It would probably be WildStar, though it’s not first-person. And I would love to see that aiming system in an actual game. The aim reticule expands and contracts according to your heartbeat and the whole area inside the reticule has an equal chance to be shot. It’s way more skill-based than some shooters, and less luck-based than others, and if you try to quick scope, you are most-likely going to miss.

        No, I’m talking like this:

At the start, there is this aerial view on a big scenery and the camera goes around the buildings and then it kind of “enters on the TV”. I’m guessing that at this moment, it’s another game. When Death Gun appeared at a hub and the other guys were protesting against Zexceed, it’s already GGO. Well, it’s a wild guess anyway.

Hopefully they pull off this arc well since it was my favorite in the series. It starts off slow then gets a lot better.
