I’ve played this game since forever, and I kind of promised to release this on White’s Day, teheh. Alas, things happened (such as college and sleeping), so I procrastinated a litttllee bit too much until it hits me that the anime will premiere soon. I guess that pushed me to do this post. For anime perspective, I’m pretty sure that not everything will be covered but for people who are curious about the source material, this post is it. Also, the review is divided into two parts since one route is long already, and I don’t want to fill the post with huge walls of texts. Anyhow, let’s get on with the game.
Game Setting
The setting of the place is an island named Midorijima. It is divided into two, Old Resident District (ghetto Midorijima) and Platinum Jail (rich kids’ place). Midorijima was actually one, but some jerk named Toue forcefully built Platinum Jail, making the original Midorijima “ghetto”. Old bastard. Ehm, although the setting looks plain and normal, the technology here is pretty advanced because people browse on the internet, make phone calls, and other things through their robotic pets that are called Allmate.
But hold on! Allmates aren’t mere robotic pets because they have their own avatars in a virtual game named Rhyme! Basically, each robotic pet has its own human avatar in the virtual world, and users fight each other with their Allmates’ avatars. That’s what basically Rhyme is all about. There are two kinds of Rhyme: legal and illegal. The legal one has an official referee called Usui, and the illegal one is where a player forcefully drags another unprepared player in the virtual world (thus forcing the game to happen). There is also a real-life game named Rib, which is a fancy name for gang fights, but it has fallen into decline due to the popularity of Rhyme. What can I say, 2D > real life.
Game System
Like any usual visual novel, the player gets the guy depending on his choice during the common route. In DMMD though, the player has to play a mini game before the ending. If the player loses at the mini game, the player will get the bad ending and vice versa. To know whether the game is getting closer to the bad ending or good ending, just look at the brain at the bottom right of the in-game menu. If the red is taking over, it’s a bad route. If it’s blue, Aoba’s ass is still safe.
Common Route
God, I can’t remember the common route at all. I can only remember gist of it. Maybe because it’s so damn long, but I’ll try my best to remember it. Before going to Aoba, the game starts itself with this black screen and 8-bit (yes, 8-bit, your laptop isn’t broken) text saying that some princess needs to be saved and so on.
After the 8-bit text, the story starts with the introduction of the main protagonist aka the player’s character named Aoba… Seragaki? Right, Seragaki Aoba. He works in a junk shop as the customer service representative and the one who receives orders online. Apparently he has this extremely sexy voice that people literally order stuff just to hear it. Oh, and his hair is extremely sensitive to touch *giggle* yeah, literally, a touch. It sounds like a new sex play or something. Funny how this becomes important later. Anyway, skipping the entire introduction on Rhyme, Rib, childhood friend (Koujaku), stalkers, randomly attacked on Rhyme (Noiz), alter ego, suspicious-but-sexy twins (Virus and Trip), random American-Indian biker (Mink), starving masked stranger (Clear), and so on.
As it has been said in the setting, Rib is declining due to Rhyme, and Mizuki, a Ribster who is also Aoba’s friend, is not amused. There is also the rumor that some random person has been attacking Ribsters, turning them into members of Morphine (another Rib group). Next day though, Koujaku mentions to Aoba that he saw Mizuki all spaced out. Aoba checks Mizuki’s turf only to find it desolated. Something smells fishy.
So, Aoba has been getting random 8-bit game demo about a prince and a princess. After checking Mizuki’s turf, he gets another demo where the princess is kidnapped. Having the usual protagonist sixth sense, Aoba senses danger and decides to go back home to check on his grandmother, Tae. And bingo. Tae’s gone, and Aoba ends up getting kidnapped by Mink. What luck.
In yaoi, one is not not kidnapped. Rather, his ass is kidnapped.
Skipping the whole kidnapping part, Aoba goes back home to fine Koujaku waiting for him with some news about Morphine. The other seme eventually joins Koujaku in Aoba’s house, and the five think of a plan to save Tae from Morphine. The five then head to the Northern District, only to find that Morphine members are members from Mizuki’s old Rib gang. Including Mizuki himself. Suddenly Aoba enters Mizuki’s mind and tries to take advantage of that by persuading Mizuki’s mind. Unfortunately, Aoba fails and Mizuki enters into a coma.
Back home, Tae then reveals that she was a scientist for Toue, and Toue has been doing this research to control people’s wills. Morphine “members” are part of his experiment. She then explains about Aoba’s ability named Scrap, where Aoba has the ability to manipulate people just by his voice. He can also enter into people’s mind and destroy them from within. Realizing the harm that will be caused by Toue, Aoba decides to break into Platinum Jail the next day to stop Toue. However, police surrounds Aoba’s house by the next morning, forcing him and the others to escape. Now here’s where the choices taken in the Common Route matters. The four seme run to separate ways, and Aoba is joined by the guy with the most favorable choice during the Common Route. Pick the best choices, or else the game will dump the player with Mink, and trust me, his route is not pretty. The two then sneak into Platinum Jail through a hidden route (Aoba received an invitation to Platinum Jail), trying to find the best way to stop Toue.

Seriously, what’s up with Nitro+CHIRAL and their long common routes? Anyhow, here are two of the four hot guys who will accompany Aoba to Platinum Jail:
Koujaku
Like Mizuki, he is Aoba’s friend who is also a Ribster and… A hairdresser. I was surprised how he turned out to be a hairdresser, out of all occupations, because he has this gangster appearance and carries a sword around. Does he cut his customers’ hair with his sword? Apparently people in Old Resident District do not mind his appearance because he has a fanbase, and they are willing to line up just for his haircut. Voiced by Takashi Hiroki (Prince of Tennis’ Eiji & Hetalia’s Japan), Koujaku is also a Rib player, being the leader of a Rib gang named Benishigure. Getting his route is pretty tricky since his choice is the first choice the player will get. Although getting Koujaku is pretty hard, his route is probably the shortest, easiest, and second lightest compared to the rest (with Noiz’s taking number one). To get Koujaku, just avoid windows, starving strangers, and get on his good side when he argues with Noiz.
If Aoba sneaks with Koujaku into Platinum Jail, they will arrive at the Oriental district of Platinum Jail named Flame Willow. Right after stepping into Flame Willow, two girls will ask Koujaku out, which he agrees to because of their tattoos. Pissed Aoba goes home early, then sleeps and waking up late only to find Koujaku sneaking out. Curious Aoba follows Koujaku, but he is unable to enter the club… Until a random bishie with skull necklace (!!) helps him to get inside. Inside the club though, Aoba gets a headache due to the lightning and the music, and he ends up puking all over the place (including Koujaku’s kimono). Although they “make up” the next morning, things still remain awkward between them. Aoba is about to apologize, but then he sees the tattoo on Koujaku’s back as he showers (Aoba, you stalkah!).

Koujaku sneaks out again, and Aoba, of course, follows him again. What a persistent uke. He meets the skull-necklaced stranger again and chats with him before entering the club. Aoba doesn’t see Koujaku though, so he goes home. When Koujaku is back, he goes berserk, asking Aoba what he talked about with the stranger. Koujaku’s RAEP MODE is on and he tries to go all hot on Aoba, but Aoba’s body is not readeh so he ends up using Scrap to stop Koujaku and then punches him. Koujaku, ashamed of himself (he should be), leaves the room.
Depressed Aoba takes a walk to calm himself down until he reaches the club. Seriously, what’s up with Aoba and taking walks to dangerous places? Aoba meets the guy again, and he invites him into the VIP room. Being a dense character, Aoba obviously doesn’t know the danger of letting strangers inviting him. Anyway, the stranger introduces himself as Ryouuhou, who is a tattoo artist. He also shows his interest towards Aoba, etc. Aoba, FINALLY sensing the danger, is about to leave but collapses due to the drugs inside his tea. I TOLD YOU SO. Thankfully, Koujaku with his team rescues Aoba when Ryuuhou leaves the room to pick his tools.
Back at home, Koujaku finally reveals the secret he has been hiding from Aoba. It turns out that the tattoo he got was “made” by Ryuuhou. Koujaku’s mother was a yakuza’s mistress, and Koujaku became the heir due to yakuza’s wife’s inability to bear children. His father forced Koujaku to get the tattoo from Ryuuhou. And, Ryuuhou, being a sadistic bastard whom I bet failed at getting his tattoo license, used the cruelest most gruesome way to embed the tattoo on him. Ryuuhou has been experimenting with his tattoos too, making whoever having the tattoo go berserk like an animal. Unable to withstand the pain, Koujaku’s monstrous side appeared and killed everybody in the room, including his mother. Koujaku became depressed and even thought of committing suicide afterwards, but he changed his mind when he saw Aoba again. He was amazed with Aoba’s growth, how he became such a guy even though he was such a crybaby yada yada. Insert fuzzy moment here.
The reason why Koujaku doesn’t want to be the bottom
After the heartwarming reconciliation, the two decide to go to confront Ryuuhou at the Oval Tower (Platinum Jail’s main tower). After fighting the unimportant mooks at the lower floor, Aoba and Koujaku manage to reach the top of the tower with Ryuuhou waiting for them over there. Why would you wait for your enemy? Only dumb people do that. But it seems that Ryuuhou is not that dumb anyway, since he secretly (when?) pricked a needle on Aoba and Benishigure’s members. Benishigure members, under Ryuuhou’s influence, seize Aoba, adding fuel to Koujaku’s wrath.
Ryuuhou finally reveals his secret project, which is to control people through his tattoo. This is the reason why Toue hired him, and his first guinea pig was Koujaku. Koujaku snaps and turns into a monster, killing Ryuuhou in the process. Ryuuhou laughed before his death though, saying that Koujaku “lost”. I guess Ryuuhou talked about Koujaku submitting into his ego to kill Ryuuhou. Anyway, Koujaku stays as a monster, and Aoba has no choice but to use Scrap to bring him back.
Bad Ending // If the player fails at the mini game, Koujaku’s mind will go crazy over his imagination of Aoba saying the same thing over and over again. Koujaku stays as a monster forever and is captured by Toue. Toue succeeds at controlling Midorijima and turns it into a powerful nation. Meanwhile, Aoba’s evil personality takes over his body and works with Toue. Evil Aoba keeps monster Koujaku in a prison, using him as his personal sex slave. I guess that’s what human monsters are best at in yaoi games: Sex.
Good Ending // If the player succeeds at the mini game, the imaginary world of Koujaku will shatter, showing Koujaku’s true inner mind, which is the place where Koujaku massacred the yakuza. Koujaku’s all like “I should dieee bla bla bla” but then Aoba tells him that what’s done is done, and the past cannot be erased. All Koujaku can– should do now is to live and all that redemption nonsense. Finally convinced by Aoba’s words, Koujaku turns into his normal self again. Suddenly the tower shakes, and the wall is filled with the picture of a stoic black-haired young man. Aoba and the rest escape the tower successfully, and the tower collapses. Of course, the two make up and go through some extremely hilarious awkward sex scene where Koujaku has a nosebleed.
Time skip to three months later. Platinum Jail is no longer there, and Mizuki wakes up from his comma. Rhyme is still played, but Usui is no longer there to watch the game. Koujaku cuts Aoba’s hair short (his hair is not that sensitive since the tower collapsed), and Aoba has been sleeping over a lot at Koujaku’s house. Despite of their lover status, the two still act like friends, being comfortable around each other and all that. Nevertheless, the relationship between two has definitely changed, with the trust and love growing between the two. Such a sweet ending, right? Yeah, I find it sweet too… Until I found out that Koujaku keeps Aoba’s hair that has been cut as a memento. What?!
Noiz
Voiced by Satoshi Hino (Sousuke in Hakkenden, Saito in Zero no Tsukaima franchise), he is a Rhyme player who is obsessed with getting Aoba into his team. It seems that he is fond of pain to the point where he literally has piercings everywhere, including his…. Yeah. That’s his charming point though. He does not talk much, but the words that come out from his mouth are pretty sharp, which always piss Aoba off. Of course, being a Rhyme player, he does not get along with Koujaku.
In the common route, he is the one who forcefully drags Aoba into the virtual world, forcing the Rhyme game between him and Aoba. Aoba is about to be defeated, but then suddenly a whole new persona comes out of Aoba who knows how to play Rhyme really well. This is the reason why Noiz wants to recruit Aoba because he was famous in Rhyme world, known as Sly Blue. Unfortunately, Aoba does not recall his Rhyme moments at all. To get Noiz, just get on his good side and do not reject him right away if he offers Aoba stuff.
Upon entering Platinum Jail, Noiz and Aoba will find themselves in the area named Green Playground. After arriving at their guest house (the invitation Aoba received provides Aoba entrance and a guest house), Noiz and Aoba fight due to the different opinions they have about Rhyme. Pissed at each other, Aoba and Noiz separate, with Noiz going upstairs and Aoba falling asleep on the couch. While sleeping, Aoba dreams of someone telling him to give in.
Aoba panics when Ren, his Allamte, is not by his side when he wakes up. Upstairs, Aoba sees Noiz tweaking Ren. Aoba is not amused, and he snatches him from Noiz. The two fight again, but then Aoba sees Noiz’s injury caused by Aoba snatching Ren. Noiz does not want to be treated though, so he goes into his room. Aoba’s suspicion fades when Ren tells him that Noiz was just researching about his software, while removing a bug that was inside Ren. Feeling guilty, Aoba tries to knock on Noiz’s door that remains unopened. Aoba can only whisper his apology and goes back to his room. Seriously Noiz, let the poor uke apologize.
The next morning, everything is back to normal. I guess Noiz did listen to Aoba’s apology. Noiz is still cold though, refusing to let Aoba treat his burnt hand (due to hot coffee). The two decided to go out for a walk, and the two talk to each other about hobbies, Ren’s unique Allmate, and so on. They were buying each other food too… NGGHHH squee so kawaii. Aoba is then distracted by the advertisement by Toue about a special event, and during that moment, Noiz is gone only to be surrounded by yakuza. Aoba drags Noiz to run away, and he is not amused. While Aoba tends his wound, he keeps asking him why he is so nice to him. Noiz suddenly goes all “If you no want my skill, then you must want my bodeeehhh” and kisses Aoba. Anyway, Aoba ends up getting hard too, so the two have this hot moment that involves mouth, hand, and sticky stuff.
Because tending injuries always lead to sex
The next morning, yakuza surrounds their guest house. The two run, but they stumble upon the police (Akujima). Aoba recognizes that this is a PINCH moment, and suddenly a voice in his head tells him to use “fall.” And look, Akujima does fall when Aoba says it. Surprised, Noiz gets angry because he thinks that Aoba is lying to him and forces him to a Rhyme match. Finally, Aoba snaps because Noiz is not receiving all his good deeds well. Aoba keeps telling Noiz that he does not want to take advantage of him, but Noiz does not believe him.
Their fight is interrupted by a game demo, saying something about the door is open. Anyway, the two decide to head to the Oval Tower and look, the entrance is empty. The two stumble upon a Doberman Allmate though, and the Doberman goes all tentacle and shoots laser. Luckily, Noiz is not hurt because… Aoba protects him from the laser. The two run and find a room to hide.
Noiz asks Aoba why he keeps protecting him, even when the injuries don’t matter to him. It turns out that Noiz cannot feel pain (CIPA, according to the wiki), no matter what the injury is. Because of this, he ended up hurting other people’s kids. Ashamed of his actions, his parents locked him up in his room. This is why Noiz does not understand Aoba’s actions and lacks feelings for others. Aoba is all sob and then tells Noiz that he wants to protect him because he wants to. Anyway, the bottom line is, Aoba is able to win Noiz’s trust and convince him to trust others more.
Seems like Noiz does like to do it in the dark
Anyway, Noiz goes out from the room to find the first-aid kit for Aoba’s wound. Noiz ends up not coming back though, so Aoba seeks him at the top floor. At the top floor, Aoba finds Noiz hypnotized, forcing a Rhyme game on Aoba. Aoba loses, and he has no choice but to use Scrap and finds himself in a dark room inside Noiz’s mind, with him lying all shackled up.
Bad Ending //The mini game for Noiz’s route is a “Yes or No” game, so the player needs to pick his choice carefully. There are three bad endings for this route. The first bad ending leads the player to the menu out of nowhere (lolwut), so SAVE A LOT. The second bad ending is having Aoba and Noiz stuck in an 8-bit game forever. That gotta suck. I mean, 8-bit form? How can they have buttsex in 8-bit format?
In the third ending, Aoba is trapped within Noiz’s mind in the dark room. Noiz’s wish to feel pain comes true but in a… twisted way. Every time the two touch each other, their skin will bleed. Yep, they receive injuries by touching each other. Now that sucks since the two are trapped hugging each other, so basically their bodies are full of painful cuts. Noiz loses his sanity because he can feel the pain (it’s a mental pain, after all), but it’s too much for him. He ends up kissing and screwing Aoba in that state. I feel really bad for Aoba because if he gets injured just by touching Noiz, imagine how his butt and his inner organs are if they are shoved by Noiz’s thing. This is truly a bad ending.
Good Ending //In the Good Ending, Aoba finally gets to hear Noiz’s inner feelings. All this time, Noiz had been feeling lonely, thinking that nobody wants him. Because of this, he turns to the virtual world where he is not treated as a monster who can’t feel pain. That’s why he’s obsessed with Rhyme. He feels like a normal human but without the pain since nobody can defeat him… Until Aoba came. The sensation of mental pain he got from his match against Sly Blue was new to him, so he wants to taste it again. Aoba then fights back by saying that he’s not alone and that he’ll destroy Noiz’s dark world. He says that he’ll be with Noiz. Aaaaawwwwwwwww. Noiz’s world is destroyed, and the two go back to the physical world.
It turns out that Noiz was hypnotized by a masked person’s song on his way back to Aoba. Anyway, the two are about to get out… Until Aoba’s split personality, Sly Blue, snaps due to him using Scrap. Having inner battle with the other Aoba, Aoba smacks Noiz away, telling him to leave without him. Noiz is surprised though, because his sense of pain is back. Instead of leaving Aoba, Noiz stays with him and carry him off. He says that Aoba needs to take responsibility for changing Noiz like this now *nosebleed* Noiz ends up getting injured though, so Aoba carries Noiz in a princess style www. The two gets out from Oval Tower, and the Tower collapses (again, with the wall filled with pictures of black-haired bishie).
Skipping to few weeks, Noiz is hospitalized due to his injury. Platinum Jail is gone, and Usui no longer watches Rhyme. Of course, being in the hospital, the two have some great sex. And since this is Satoshi Hino we are talking about, of course the sex voice is great wwww. Lucky bastards. Anyway, skipping again to three months, Noiz has disappeared without telling Aoba anything. He does not contact him too. Then suddenly, Noiz appears! Wearing a suit and without any piercing! All business-like! What in the world? It turns out that he has been helping his brother’s business in Germany, and now he is back to take Aoba there. Noiz carries Aoba in a princess style again IN FRONT OF EVERYBODY and I’m like wwwwwwwwwwww.
Koujaku route was definitely fun. Out of all the routes I’ve played, his route is the sweetest, fluffiest, etc. Seriously, nothing beats having a doomed trope (childhood friend) that actually ends up with the main character. I love how the chemistry between Koujaku and Aoba is perfect, starting from friendship to love. Because of their matched personalities that have been with each other since the beginning, I can actually imagine the two hooking up with each other until they’re old. Childhood friends FTW! Besides the perfect chemistry between the two, Koujaku’s character is another thing that I enjoyed the most in his route. His character is totally the opposite of his physical appearance. He has the appearance of a yakuza and a playboy, but his character is sooo kawaiii. I just love it when he blushes like mad just for holding Aoba’s hand at the end and how he ends up having a nosebleed in the middle of the sex just because of Aoba’s sex face www. Perverted stalker, much? >ヾ(。◕ฺ∀◕ฺ)ノ (link contains spoiler).
Noiz’s route is also as cute as Koujaku’s, but in a different way. Koujaku’s route is cute in a way that he is a childhood friend and so on, but Noiz’s route is cute in a childish way. Noiz is pretty much a kid anyway, since he is 19 and all (borderline between pedophilia and maturity. Nice one, Nitro+CHIRAL!). Just like Koujaku’s route, his story is pretty cliché, probably even more cliché than Koujaku’s. His CIPA disease is pretty unique, but I guess that’s about it. Take that out, and Noiz’s route will be boring as hell. Not really boring because there are some cute moments, but plot-wise, Noiz’s route won’t stand out. It’s too bad because Noiz, as a character, is great. The one thing that entertained me in his route is definitely peeling his personality. He was introduced as a quiet character, who is pretty ignorant about everything, but as the story progresses, Aoba gets to see the different sides of Noiz that was not previously shown. Heck, I’m starting to think that Noiz himself is the only thing that stands out in his route. I mean, who could have thought that he carries white handkerchief all the time? And who could have thought that he likes to give surprise kisses and talk dirty while having sex? Those things were definitely not there when Noiz was introduced as a quiet person. I was really surprised when I saw those cute moments of his. Noiz is… SO KAWAAIIII о(ж＞▽＜)ｙ ☆. Ehm, so yeah, although the plot of Noiz’s route is pretty cliché, it is balanced with Noiz’s personality that became one of the biggest surprises in DMMD. Well, not saying that there are no other surprises in DMMD. There are many surprises, but I’ll leave that for the second post.

The problem with TnC is that the genre is not quite there. It is angsty, but not too angsty, it is gore, but also not gore, it’s as if the game doesn’t know what kind of story it wants to be. With DMMD though, I think Nitro+CHIRAL finally knows how to blend in all the different stories into a game.
I like Noiz more because of his sex voice UFFFF SO SEXY. Well, Mink is… I don’t know what to say on his route lol
I LOVE SATOSHI HINO, HHHNNNNNGG. His voice is just too smexy for his own good. I guess I liked him more because of it. Also, his character design was the most unique in terms of piercing and the whole cube and bad boy thing with neon colours and casual attire. I just overall liked his ensemble more than anyone.

True about Noiz’s appearance is probably the most unique one. Heck, I think he’s the most unique character so far in the yaoi world. Appearance-wise, of course. About personality, it’s another matter *glance at secret route*

So many random terms for things! …Yeah, I’m probably not going to understand the whole plot until I play this myself or watch the anime. It’s good that there’s a plot though. Hopefully the anime works out.
Hino has ended up just being scary in the last couple of otoge I’ve played with him in it (NSFW or not), but uwaaaaah Takahashi. I’m just waiting for your explanation on Clear’s route (specifically that naked apron scene wwwwwwww).
Hino’s variety is amazing! He can do both positive and negative roles pretty nicely. He’s going way up on my like chart these days. :3
Btw, you should play this Kara! You’ll love Clear, he’s sooo kaawaiiiii! xD If you have watched NGNL, I’ll compare him as a male version of Miyuki’s cat-eared loli-des.

This was much much entertaining that TnC. For some reason I just could never go through the routes because of too much angst. I think Nitro+Chiral found a good combination of fluff, mystery and BL in this story.
What really attracted me the most was clean, colourful and light graphics and of course the ACTUAL PLOT. I somehow got invested in the characters and damn isn’t Ren too cute?! The problem with TnC is that the genre is not quite there. It is angsty, but not too angsty, it is gore, but also not gore, it’s as if the game doesn’t know what kind of story it wants to be. With DMMD though, I think Nitro+CHIRAL finally knows how to blend in all the different stories into a game.

I LOVE SATOSHI HINO, HHHNNNNNGG. His voice is just too smexy for his own good. I guess I liked him more because of it. Also, his character design was the most unique in terms of piercing and the whole cube and bad boy thing with neon colours and casual attire. I just overall liked his ensemble more than anyone.

Hino’s variety is amazing! He can do both positive and negative roles pretty nicely. He’s going way up on my like chart these days. :3
