Durarara!! finally gets a Second Season

Durarara!!news-end2

And HELLO, fifth year of aniblogging!

I have been contemplating for a while on how to post about my four years of aniblogging. The big date (13th March), is already past and I would have let it slide for bigger and better posts in May (for Metanorn’s anniversary), but this news just stopped me on my tracks. We usually don’t cover news items like these on Metanorn but like few other franchise, I’m making an exception for this as many of the team members share my enthusiasm for this series. Not to mention, the official announcement of second season of Durarara!! is almost symbolic for me in a sense because I began my aniblogging career on Metanorn with it, back in early 2010, almost 400 hundred posts ago. Literally, you can say, besides the Type-Moon fever, this story has been second on my list that can easily make me squee.

Time sure flies, when you are having fun and after the long whining, the day is finally here for another season of this goodness. You can call this a legendary series of its time because it turned many non-watchers of anime to regulars. Many of Metanron’s old readers/lurkers actually started visiting the blog, while this series was being blogged as well. Overall, due to the novel popularity and just the whole package produced hoards of fangirls and fanboys. Therefore, it was very disappointing for everyone when an instant second season was not announced by Brains Base. From the track record of the studio, their another big success Natsume Yuujinchou (again helmed by Omori), has had four total seasons so no one understood why the same did not happen for Durarara!! Clearly, it was not due to DVD/BD Sales or even the merchandise, which have always been popular even after four years of being on the market.

The delay could have been due to reluctance of the studio for picking up an unfinished story before but there is no excuse anymore as Ryohgo Narita just celebrated the 10 year anniversary of the original novel, which recently finished with 13 volumes. The story does not end there though, as Narita will be continuing the story under Durarara!! SH after a two-year time skip from the original novel series. The new season on the other hand will start right after the events of first season and as I’ve heard from the grapevine of novel readers, the events are even more exciting than the arcs covered in season one. As a fan, I’m just happy to see the varied cast moseying back in Ikebukuro.

Drrr! is officially back and in production at Shuka Studio rather than Brains Base. This news should not be alarming because all the old guys are coming back, with the main dude Takahiro Omori directing, Noboru Takagi scripting, Makoto Yoshimori composing music and Takaharu Kishida adapting the character designs from Suzuhito Yasuda’s novel illustrations. The seiyuu cast will remain the same for obvious reasons so be ready to eargasm with Hiroshi Kamiya, Ono Daisuke, Miyano Mamoru, Yuuichi Nakamura, HanaKana, Fukuyama Jun, Miyuki Sawashiro, Toshiyuki Toyonaga, Takaya Kuroda, Kishio Daisuke, Fujiwara Keiji, Mai Nakahara, Yuki Kaji, Katsuyuki Konishi, Akio Ootsuka, etc. There are many more names in the psychedelic cast of this series but this is all I could do from the top of my head.

I can’t wait for the release date and more info but will keep you all updated through our Fanpage/Twitter for more updates to come. I would also take this opportunity to reminisce old memories with the gifs I made while reviewing this series, back in 2010. Some images might be spoilerish if you haven’t seen the series so click only if you want to relive its awesomeness.

    I can’t believe this!
    Finally after 7 years! 😀 😀 😀 😀
Looks like its time to re watch season 1.
    *jumping around in joy*

    YAY!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Sorry for getting Hyper. xD

  2. Foshizzel says:

    Yayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy!

Fun side note Durarara was the first series I ever blogged so this is wonderful news.

    • Kyokai says:

      *high-five*

I remembered your story while writing this as well. I guess, this series is pretty dear to many of us. ^^

  3. skylion says:

I guess I’ll have to get back you to. The original is till on back log.

  4. Joojoobees says:

Excellent news, and congratulations on your ani-blogging anniversary. The stars must really have aligned for Metanorn on that day, long ago, because they brought the best boss-lady a website could ever have.

  5. BlackBriar says:

Wow! Two birds with one stone. Someone set this up, didn’t they? 400 hundred posts and over 5000 comments later. Congratulations on your milestone, Kyokai. Here’s to many more in the future. Ack! Do not mention all these top class seiyuus! I’m going to lose it!!

This is interesting news indeed and though I only saw a few episodes in English dub, I liked the series so the anticipation is going to build like crazy. Too bad I wasn’t there when it was airing originally because I only started watching anime online around the time I started commenting here and that’s going back to November 2010. Besides, with this, I’ll get a clearer grasp as to how everyone near worships the famous/infamous Izaya Orihara. And there may be more possible cosplays from Overcooled. This news brought back the memory of that particular photo. 😉

Oddly enough, another series that aired a long time ago, though I haven’t had the chance to see it, Mushishi, is getting a second season as well and it begins Spring 2014: Mushishi Zoku Shou.

PS: Since I know you’re a loyal slave fan to Type-Moon stuff, here’s something that might sweeten you up. That new Fate/Stay Night anime is airing in Fall 2014.

The sign of more old series resurrection is coming?

      • Namika says:

Should I feel guilty for wishing Bleach’s relaunch? Because I definitely don’t 😀

      • Kyokai says:

Us, oldies are really happy campers this year. What a great start with all this fantastic news and follow ups. :3

      • BlackBriar says:

Well, Freezing got a second season after nearly three years since the first (Freezing: Winter 2011; Freezing Vibration: Fall 2013) so anything is possible. What I’m hoping for right now is a third season of Index.

        • Kyokai says:

There’s a lot of material for Index so that is possible. Even a movie. But I really want to see that Accelerator spinoff manga animated.

          • BlackBriar says:

            You’re a fan of Index/Railgun? I didn’t know that. What a surprise!!

            • Kyokai says:

I am and I do remember commenting on Fosh’s Index posts. Not to mention, like Mikasa’s character more than Index.

            • d-LaN says:

I think you mean Misaka. The typo is not going to go away anytime soon lol.

            • Kyokai says:

I can always edit but oh well. 😛 Yes, yes, Misaka-wa-Misaka!

    • Kyokai says:

Thank you, BB! There was a time I thought maybe I’ll kick the bucket around three years but nope! I’m not going to leave this place anytime soon!

This is a good time to catch up to the awesomeness of Drrr! You should know by now that Overcooled and I have never led you astray before.

I love Mushishi and really looking forward to Zoku (it has the same feels of supernatural like Natsume and everyone knows how I love that franchise as well). And I already know about FSN project by ufotable. I was yelling from the rooftops when the first PV came out. 😉

      • BlackBriar says:

I’ve just finished marathoning Durarara and it’s absolutely everything you said, Kyokai!! The show was purely awesome so I’m even more excited that a second season is the way. Good to know that it’s happening because it left a bad taste in the mouth that Celty never got her head back and hopefully that despicable slime ball degenerate Izaya Orihara gets a more thorough thrashing. Getting sent flying through the air and a black eye from Simon was nowhere near satisfying for all the chaos he wrought pulling strings behind the scenes.

        • Kyokai says:

Join this glorious club, BB! We welcome you with open arms and lots of otaku merch because it’s what this series known for! 😀

          • BlackBriar says:

Ah, what the heck? Why not? You’ve already got me with Type Moon. Not that I’m one to talk for being persuasive since I’ve already convinced Irenesharda to take a look at Shiki and Karakuri with Trinity Blood, plus persuading her to take an interest with Strike the Blood when it started airing.

  6. zztop says:

I briefly saw a few eps some years back. The most interesting part for me was the missing head mystery, although I can’t recall who took the head or if that Irish spirit-girl ever found it again.

    • Kyokai says:

I’d not spoil it for you if you don’t remember but I would indeed poke you to go and finish the series. The ensemble of cast is just too good to pass up.

  7. akagami says:

Saw this yesterday so overall happy that a good series is getting another season – I haven’t read any of the LN but I’m hoping the later ones are just as entertaining as the first three were.

I’m not sure how I feel about Shuka Studio as I don’t know a single thing about them. But considering most of the staff is returning it should be hard to mess it up.

Trust Me is still one of my favorite EDs ~~~

    • Namika says:

The studio change was a surprise and personally, I’m a little scared if the art style or the quality change too much.

      • Kyokai says:

I think Shuka was ‘made’ for the Durarara!! project. We won’t really know the reason until later but I can theorize that it’s either due to creative differences that Omori is dealing with or just overall package of cast not being able to come to terms with whatever contracts Brains Base came up with. Drrr! is highly lucrative in all kinds of Sales so I have a feeling that a separate board was made (a la Trigger?), to keep all the creative juices in one place.

As Takaharu Kishida is still around to adapt Yasuda’s novel illustrations, I don’t think things will hit bottom in animation unless we have a mishap like Flamenco with Manglobe (hopefully not!).

And I can still sing along with OP and EDs. My favourite remains to be Uragiri no Yuuyake:

        • Namika says:

Well, that’s probably the case. As long as we’ll get an adaptation worthy of being called Durarara, all is well.

Oh I totally remember those lyrics xD well, maybe I don’t remember Butterfly, but Uragiri no Yuuyake? 😀 I have all op/eds on my computer. o-o Yes, I’m a criminal o-o

          • Kyokai says:

Same here, no worries. We are all criminals due to our love for this series. xD

          • BlackBriar says:

Then those who don’t have the op/eds but are tempted to get them are latent criminals. 😀

  8. Highway says:

I watched it a long (for me) while ago, it was good, but not really one of my favorites. And more than that, it’s kept almost zero mindshare for me since then.

  9. Karakuri says:

So… does this mean more Orihara twins? Because if it does, that’s perfect. xD

    • Foshizzel says:

Oh my god yes those sisters <3

      • Kyokai says:

I’m not sure how much of a big role they have in the original novel but as they would be the MC in SH, the sequel, I’d really like to see more of them.

    • Namika says:

      OMG o-o
that sounds like an apocalypse knocking on my window. Orihara twins *shivers* Are they like Izaya?? *,*

      • Kyokai says:

You can say they are a handful for even Izaya…

        • BlackBriar says:

And I hear Izaya is quite the psychological sadist. Those twins must be demons.

        • Namika says:

Oh god. I can’t even imagine what person can give Izaya hard time. Besides Shizuo, of course 😀

  10. CarVac says:

I decided to rewatch the first one yet again. I’m already on the 10th episode…too good.

I had forgotten how absolutely, amazingly insane every character (except Celty) is.

    And the sound production.
    And the visual style.
    And the music.
    And the atmosphere.

It’s hard to beat this series.

    • Namika says:

It is. But personally, I don’t care THAT much for the 2nd season kicking the first season’s ass. If it’s just as good I’ll be content.

    • Kyokai says:

Aah yes, CarVac. It has everything that a big cast anime desires but fails.

@Namika, as it’s a sequel, I’m pretty sure we’ll enjoy the ride just as we did for the original season. :3

  11. Overcooled says:

How nostalgic~ I first started reading Metanorn around the time you were blogging Durarara!!. Thanks for making Metanorn the place it is today, Kyokai! A long-awaited second season of Durarara!! is definitely a suitable reward. I can’t believe it’s actually happening…

    • Foshizzel says:

Same here OC! I remember those days xD

      • Kyokai says:

It brings back novice memories when my reviews were pages long and full of bazillion images… Oh how we have changed since then but seriously, I wouldn’t have continued my journey this long if it weren’t for the amazing Metanorn team and readers. :3

Drrr! kinda sealed the deal for another long haul.

    • Namika says:

Yup. That does bring back lots of memories. It’s like fate is favoring Metanorn in a strange way 😀

  12. Namika says:

I am literally squealing in delight right now. Not only because this show is so amazing/unique/majestic and did I say amazing already?

This show is the first ongoing I have ever followed in my life, so naturally I have some feelings for it. And this annoucement makes me feel nostalgic as hell. If it comes out in January I’ll probably die 😀

Well see more of epic Izaya + Shizuo stuff >O< SRSLY those two, I missed that awesomeness so much. <3

    • Kyokai says:

I literally did the same the moment I found out. I remember wishing about it when it was first reported that Narita was celebrating the 10 years anniversary of Drrr! This is kind of a time for any content creator to give out their best (Type-Moon announced Mirai fukuin and FSN at their 10th, while Mushishi’s 10th came forth with an hour long OVA and then second season), so even if the news came a bit late, I was just too happy to care.

And oh I remember you commenting on my Drrr! and FMA posts when I started in 2010. Really, glad to have such old readers to fangirl with over a series that is literally so dear to us. Don’t get me started over the Shizaya, this made me join the dark side! xD

      • Namika says:

Who could sulk over late news of this amazing nature? xDDD

And I’m glad to have a place to fangirl with awesome people :3 MWAHAHAHA
So instead of cookies, you were bribed with this epic pairing, eh? 😀 well, one way or another :3

  13. berrish17 says:

OMG,crazy Ikebukuro team is coming back <3

Love all the casts involved in Durarara!!
Coincidentally,I was JUST watching the seiyu events from long time ago 😀

    • Kyokai says:

I know right? They are best bunch of crazies brought together really. Good thing is that Drrr! did a lot of seiyuu events due to its popularity. Did you check this one out?

      • berrish17 says:

Yup!!this and the one in Nakano <3

        love the Adlib from Miyano-san.lol

My favorite part was when Kamiya Hiroshi drew on Ono-san's script "Chotatao"!! It actually looks REAL!!
At first I thought Miyano Mamoru drew it. He pretended really well and his epic face XD

Its really fun to watch these events to see them all have fun 😀 Having the seiyus comment on favorite scenes are nice too.

        • Kyokai says:

I loved the banter between the cast. Specifically OD over-acting in some cases, which you just do not expect at all! Not to mention all the sidelong glancing and bristling of HanaKana! And hell, this was one of the first seiyuu events I saw Mamoru Miyano towering over everyone. He sure is tall. Besides this, I also enjoyed some of their live dubbing. :3

      • berrish17 says:

        Waaah, my comment got deleted!!!

Anyways,I did watch this and the Nakano one 🙂
My favorite part was Kamiya Hiroshi drawing “Chotatao!!” on Ono-san’s script XD LOL Miyano Mamoru’s pretended really well and his reaction/face was epic XD
