Chuunibyou demo Koi ga Shitai Ren – 09

Chuu2koi Ren-Ewwww

Ika Musume… nooooooo!

spring13-highwHelping out at the beach. Nice twist on the usual beach episode, almost like adding a little Ika Musume in to the show (some squid ink anyone?)

The Napping Place

Chuu2koi Ren-Cookoff

I always like seeing Touka

Of course you get a bunch of high school kids to help out at your beach cafe. At least you do if you’re Kumin’s mom, and getting Shinka in a bikini to help draw traffic isn’t the worst idea. Nor is Kuzuha’s cooking, and her yakisoba brings in quite the crowd. In fact, she impresses enough to go up against Touka, who returns for long enough to question Yuuta about what’s going on with Rikka, and to express her disappointed relief that their relationship hasn’t gone further before a cooking contest that’s glossed over entirely (thankfully).

Chuu2koi Ren-Getting help

Satone’s going to help Rikka, it seems

But the main interloper this episode is Satone, who is along at Rikka’s behest, because of her mention earlier about losing her powers. Now Rikka is afraid she’s facing the same fate, as she has a harder time calling upon her power, if she can at all. Is her growing love for Yuuta going to doom her to having to give up her delusions? Satone thinks so, but Rikka is going to try to prove her wrong.

Power Up Go!

Chuu2koi Ren-Shning!

Chuuni Force Power Up! Go!

So when pushed to the brink, losing to Satone, and the power of her Tyrant’s Eye, Rikka figures out how to work her love for Yuuta into her constructed world, resulting in a mecha upgrade (Fosh probably loved it) and all new power which defeats Satone and also the little kid that Touka brought along. And she seems to be able to do this because Yuuta has convinced her that their ‘contract’ is not like normal lovers’ contracts, but a special one for them. Which is good, since it works out for Rikka.

Chuu2koi Ren-Couldve Been

Could this really have been the future?

And Satone seems to be happy about it too, happy for Rikka and for Yuuta. That is, until she starts to think about it too much, thinking “What if I’d tried something different back then?” Ah, the ‘what might’ve been’ game. I think everyone ends up playing that sometime or other. But seeing that Rikka was able to avoid having to choose between her fun constructed world and her feelings for Yuuta, Satone starts thinking too much about Yuuta. About holding hands with him, about kissing him and snuggling him. And maybe she realizes that she’s not really over him like she thought she was.

So are they finally going to make Satone be an actual love rival for Rikka? Does she have any chance? She’s definitely more forward than Rikka is, or at least she was when she wasn’t really thinking she was interested. But in her past, she couldn’t make the move she needed to to try to get through to Yuuta, so why would it be different now? And just because Rikka is able to integrate Yuuta in with the Tyrant’s Eye doesn’t mean Satone could continue to be a Magical Devil Girl and still be with him, even as tolerant as he is. But she certainly seems to have that smitten look, and that could end up being at least temporary trouble for Rikka and Yuuta.

well give beach ep & toka back again yea well give but seem triangle going on with rika, yuta, & satone?

    • BlackBriar says:

It’s too early to call it a love triangle. Satone hasn’t yet made her new feelings known to them. I wouldn’t say she’s fully acknowledged them herself either.

It was an Italian job? Give Cento some props.

I was hoping they would throw Satone into the mix for real. The SS Rikka x Yuuta is heading for a DRAMA STORM!

    • Highway says:

I dunno, it depends on how much Satone can make waves while being an outsider. Sure, she can make Rikka burn up with embarrassed jealousy by clinging to Yuuta, but that’s not really going to turn Yuuta’s head, especially if it makes Rikka act vulnerable. Those are the times that Yuuta is most tuned into Rikka. And with the progress that they’re making, even if everyone else thinks it’s super slow, it’s not like Satone’s gonna put out to try to steal him, or even that Yuuta would be interested in that.

      • skylion says:

At this point, I wonder if it would be of interest for the story to have Yuuta discover some second thoughts on his current relationship with Rikka? Could that doevtail into Satone rediscovering how she really feels about him?

        • Highway says:

I really don’t think I’d be interested in that. My initial thoughts on that are that it would take a pretty big turnaround in Yuuta’s feelings for that to happen, so much so that it would just feel amazingly contrived. Really, I don’t know that something like that could happen without Rikka almost pushing him away, and I don’t see how that would happen either. These two really are OTP, and there just isn’t really enough time to put the brakes on that and turn the ship around.

What I think is more likely is that Satone uses her one-sided love for Yuuta as a springboard out of being Sophia Ring SP Saturn VII and her Maou Mahou Shoujo persona and into a normal relationship with another boy in the future. Mainly realizing that thoughts of love are more powerful and fun than thoughts of magical battle.

It’s the deadly ladle that never misses its target. Where does she even keep it? Touka is definitely back and she’s sexy as ever. Even more so with that swimsuit.

I’m not surprised Satone started looking at Yuuta like that. She was just a kid back then and too lost in her own fantasies to think of such complicated things. But unfortunately, she’s way too late, not to mention she knowingly strengthened her rival’s relationship. You really don’t know what you have until it’s gone.

    • Highway says:

Touka was easily my favorite character in the first series, and I think this one has suffered a bit from having so little of her, although there really isn’t room for her type of conflict in the story now. I just love that nonchalant badass lady character. Even her couple appearances this season, magically pulling out skin mags from Yuuta’s room, were excellent.

      • skylion says:

        …and magically pulling out a daughter…

      • BlackBriar says:

Touka is the kind of character you just can’t win against no matter how hard you try. The fact everyone respects/fears her is proof enough.

I’m so glad Rikka found the solution to her fading powers so quickly. It just shows how they’ve grown into a more confident couple. They’re far from being perfect, but they really do trust each other. It was obvious Rikka could have both her chuunibyou delusions AND Yuuta…thank goodness she figured it out and Satone didn’t. With a mecha transformation to boot! A little odd, but definitely welcome.

Satone’s revived crush on Yuuta is pretty cute. I think it’ll cause more trouble and pain for her than it will for the happy couple.
