Time for Sonico to inspire more people. This week, she’s being followed by a reporter for a local magazine for an in-depth interview and article. And cynical reporter-san goes from bummed she has to follow some local model to questioning her own life choices to inspired to restart her attempts to be a novelist, because Sonico is so positive about everything. As usual, Sonico comes across as her normal earnest self, just doing her best to be the person she wants to be.

And really, who could withstand such an onslaught of niceness? Sayaka thinks that there’s no way that Sonico and Kitamura are going to accept the idea of an interview from her little magazine, but from the very beginning, they’re all for the idea. The real problem is that Sayaka doesn’t really understand Sonico from the beginning. Even Sonico’s obaa-chan just letting her into the apartment and “have at it! Good luck!” throws her off. The idea that Sonico is just a normal girl, and noone really knows that she’s a gravure model keeps throwing Sayaka off, until at Kitamura’s insistence, she asks Sonico what she’s doing with her life. And having someone who doesn’t mind that she’s unsuccessful, but is just trying anyway to make her dream come true, first brings Sayaka down, and then inspires her to start trying to be a novelist again. Of course, in the end, Sonico gets a lovely article about her ambitions and Sayaka is trying to do what she loves to do.
Kimi is a cute character~
I would be lying if I did not admit that I was looking forward to this episode because of all the random anime references through cosplay that we saw in the preview! There were a few things that I liked this week because it was really refreshing to break away from the main characters to focus on Kimi and Chacha. So did anyone else feel the start of the episode felt kind of serious? I mean the use of black, white and red certainly made it feel like it could have been something serious; however that quickly died off because it did not take long for the fanservice to kick in thanks to Azuki, Inaho, Himegami and Haruko who all agreed to pose for Kimi to draw them as reference material for her manga! That said the best part of the episode for me was seeing all the random cosplay shots for Mondaiji, Fate illya, Upotte, Strike witches, Rozen Maiden and Kore wa zombie and finally it appears that the fifth episode will include some fighting! About damn time I say.

Yuu is two-timing Haruka
Shizuka Service Time
This week Sakura Trick backed off on the Yuu and Haruka makeouts a little bit, instead trading in some time with Mitsuki. Haruka wants to get Mitsuki to help with the class’s Snow White presentation, so that Yuu and Mitsuki can participate together. Of course, this puts Mitsuki in the play with Haruka, and Mitsuki’s Haruka-crush is running pretty wild, trying to get Haruka to kiss her as part of a rehearsal. Haruka’s not really picking up on the crush tho, instead interpreting Mitsuki’s signals as trying to get between her and Yuu.

I wonder if Yuu’s catching on to Mitsuki’s crush on her girlfriend, because Yuu seems to be more likely to interfere with Mitsuki lately. That’s not to say that everything’s all smooches between Haruka and Yuu after Yuu gets left behind with Shizuku and Kotone, leading her to pledge revenge on Haruka by clinging to Kotone.
No, noone’s gonna figure out what you two are up to there…
Of course there are some Haruka and Yuu kisses, like when Yuu hangs back from the whole group to first scold Haruka for leaving her behind, and then later under a cloak (with other people still in the classroom, these two are getting more bold!). I’m starting to think that the show is probably reaching its limit on how far it will show the relationship between these two going, although I’d still like to see them go for more than kisses. There’s definitely more attraction between them now, with Yuu grabbing onto Haruka more and their kisses being more involved. So we’ll see.

Super Sonico The Animation – 05: Though not intentional, Sonico did a good job giving Sayaka a new perspective and encouraging her to write again. Her conceptions of Sonico were utterly shattered. Given all the negativity she’s showed since the beginning of her job, she’s had a very rough time.

Maken-Ki! Two: That was good. I didn’t know which were better reference wise: The cosplays of Illya, Kurousagi, Asuka and Haruna or the rampaging monster straight out of Kore wa Zombie. The school uniform wearing crayfish was an instant reminder.

Sakura Trick – 05: More and more, Mitsuki is near a descent into yuri debauchery. A few extra pushes and she’ll outright say she wants Haruka. I want to see how Yuu would react if she had a clear grasp of her sister’s fantasies.

Sonico: Sonico’s cute as always…it’s strange, that Sonico’s anime is nothing really special, but…It kind of makes you want to watch…i wonder why

Actually, Super Sonico’s anime is pretty special: It’s very rare to have an anime that is so positive as that. People like to be lifted up, no matter if they say they like things that are contentious or antagonistic.
And they’re cutting a very good balance with it. Sonico is lucky, for sure. But she also does enough work that the viewer (and her friends) feels that she’s earning her luck, that she’s earning the good things that come to her. She works hard as a model – she doesn’t turn jobs down, doesn’t act like a diva, doesn’t phone it in. She works hard with Daichiuchuusokudo – practicing regularly, writing songs. She works hard at her grandmother’s shop – putting up with the drunken guys. And she studies well in school, even if she’s weak to waking up.
The show is all about the power of positivity, and I think that on balance, if more people were more positive, more good things would happen to them.
