Space Dandy – 04

Dandy (1)

Hellooooo nurse! Oh wait…

Uhhhh….Uhhhh……….Uhhhh……….Uhhhh. If not for a narrator, that would’ve been the whole 2nd half of the episodes. Fosh, Kyo and I have some fun talking about another fun ep. of the Dandy guy in Space.

————————————————

Of all the off the wall things to pull Space Dandy decided to go all undead on us by introducing anime zombies, but if you are expecting High School of the Dead levels of zombies you will be sad because this episode had me laughing the entire time! So, enjoy our mini-talk!

———————————————

Space Dandy is at it with their inspiration of western themes and even when I wanted MOAR BLOOD & GORE, I was fine with it being a relaxed yet funny zombie episode. I should have been offended after hearing Junichi Suwabe groan stupidly for around ten minutes but still, a nice change from the typical take on this genre. Hope you enjoy our mini talk. Grrr… Graaaah! Mrh? Uhhh….. Uhhhhhhh!

The process of fermentation is fascinating. Little living things are happily eating sugar and pooping alcohol and gas.

Yeah, that zombie fight scene, what was up with that sakuga?

At this point, Dandy has the oblivious of attention spans, unless it has anything to do with what is right on his mind, it doesn’t exist.

    • Foshizzel says:

Zombies ftw and yeah I think there was some Sakuga going on just like episode two’s ramen fight with Scarlet, but yeah it was good silly stuff this week.

    • Kyokai says:

Dandy’s one lucky bastard because he has mush or nada for brains. 😉

  2. sadakups says:

I laughed so hard with those guys at the insurance firm having snipers to deal with zombies claiming their death benefits.

    • Foshizzel says:

Same here! That was freaking hilarious and how Dandy was able to dodge the bullets so easily…

    • Kyokai says:

I got the kick out of the fact that the assassin was infected too and he further spread it to the insurance firm peeps. Justice served~

four eps in and the dub of space dandy is looking pretty….dandy. i dont think it has to do with the fact that its a comedy and not a lot of acting is needed; ian sinclair is a good voice actor in general so i think that definitely helps…he has a really good take on dandy (not to mention he has a good sense of humor). And colleen Clinkenbeard is great as scarlett as well…its clear funimation decided to get their A-listers for this one. Both the dub and sub rock in the acting department.

    • Foshizzel says:

The dub was really well done for this zombie themed episode and like you said the actors did a really good job keeping it funny~

      Thumbs up Funimation <3

      • sonicsenryaku says:

Yup yup, funi keeps getting better and better at their dubs and dish out quality ones (most of the time anyway). As long as use their A-listers and pull their heavyweights from time to time like Troy Baker (Last of Us, Arkham origins) they should keep up the good opinion of dubs that has been slowly rising.

        • Kyokai says:

I don’t listen to a lot of dub but this is as good as Cowboy Bepop really.

          • sonicsenryaku says:

I tend to watch a lot of dubbed shows after watching the subs as im just the kind of guy who likes to see multiple perspectives. I personally think its important to see both of those perspectives because at the end of the day, the relevance of anime in the west will be pushed by eng dubs and not the jap dubs. I think that’s one of the reason’s space dandy’s airing in dub along with the jap airing is so significant.

Toonami had recently answered some viewer questions in which one of them was the idea of airing subbed anime on tv; to which they replied correctly that something like that wouldnt work in the western market. If space dandy is successful (which it is right now as far as tv ratings go), this will motivate studios to take this approach of dubbing simultaneously along with the jap release more often which would help anime become more relevant in the west (bigger market, bigger sales, more budget for those very ambitious shows).

Dubs back in the day suffered from studios just grabbing anyone “off the streets” to do the job. Nowadays we actually have good voice actors playing the roles of characters and that couldnt make me happier (althought Sentai filmworks still makes me sad inside). As long as you have a great ADR director, an outstanding selection of voice-actors, and a well-adapted script that is coherently written and does not stray from the essence of the original intent, you have all the ingredients for a great dub. Cowboy bebop had that and now look, even Watanabe thinks bebop’s dub was actually superior to the subbed version (if i remember correctly). It’s just one man’s opinion but he seems to be able to discern the voice acting differences and make a valid opinion. I do hope that the success of space dandy in the west opens more possibilities in both the jap and western market.

            • Foshizzel says:

Dudeeee high five!! Same here! I love watching my favorite shows in both sub and dub to see the differences in certain scenes for instance the dub for High school DxD is so freaking hilarious and the same for Kore wa zombie? Funimation tends to do awesome work with ecchi/comedy/action series.

True I could see subbed anime not doing so hot on Toonami which has been airing dubbed anime for a long time but I hope Space Dandy is the start of a new trend in anime to bring more fans in! I mean they could have done this with something as huge as Attack on Titan when it originally aired or did Funi/Toonami see that as a risky move? Either way I want this trend to continue.

Sentai sucks I hate them sooooooooo much! They screwed up a lot of shows with bad dubs like Penguindrum and Girls und Panzer….

Bebop is still a classic in my book <3

            • skylion says:

You mean Sentai screwed up the dubs. The original shows still exist, even if Sentai didn’t.

            • Highway says:

I know the back cover copy on my GaruPan BD is atrocious. Just vile. Like “Why did you guys even write anything if you were going to write something this awful?” bad. It could have been so easy: “Girls drive tanks and have epic fun!” Instead we get

“They may not be on the half-track to fame and fortune, and maybe some of them would rather shop for tank tops than become tops in tanks, but once their focus is locked and loaded, they’re absolutely driven.”

              Just… no.

            • skylion says:

I have years of experience in writing ad copy. Trust me, that was a gold medal winner. OMG they things clients have made me do. 🙁

            • Kyokai says:

You are a copy-writer, skylion? Oh man, I can understand your pain.

    Zombies… brains… braaaains…

*gets out the BFG9k* Eat BFG MF’ers! You are all DOOM’ed!

  5. Highway says:

I’ll probably keep watching the dub if I watch this show, because it’s not really worth the effort to download. It was pretty mindless, even before everyone turned into zombies. I don’t know if I like the idea of zero continuity. The only thing that’s been a persistent change from the beginning of the show to now is that Meow wasn’t with them, and now he is. Everything else is a complete reset it seems.

    • sonicsenryaku says:

The reset might actually be part of the plot…ep 1 and the ED kinda hint to it but at this point its a stretch

    • Foshizzel says:

If this has 25 episodes I have a feeling we will eventually get a real story near the end which is similar to Cowboy Bebop which has a ton of 1 shot episodes and closer to the end of that series we discover Spikes past with the final two or three episodes…

Then again who knows right now it has been goofy and not so serious which is fine for me but I can see the other perspective of the fans that find 1 shots to be dumb because they want a real story instead.

      • skylion says:

If this has twenty five episodes, I get the feeling my HDTV will assume an awkward flight pattern at some given point.

As one shots, they only really have the goofy idea of parallel universes in the ED to glue it together. So, as we’ve seen the escalation of oddity is just going up and up. From a contained event that had all the main characters biting it, up to a wormhole to a Ramenverse, whatever the third episode was about, and now Universal Zombie WTFolypse.

I just hope he gets some brains in his head before to long.

Meow should just always be Meow, thou.

    • Kyokai says:

Not all anime have to be thought inducing, really. There are times that you just want some laughs and or feel-good moments. Dandy provides the former with no strings attached.

Personally, I’m fine with universe-reset every episode and even if the PLOT doesn’t crop up till the end, this has been entertaining.
