Mikakunin de Shinkoukei – 02

Nice hips.

Looks like Mikakunin knows how cute Mashiro is, because it’s given her so much attention this episode.

Secrets

Deep in thought or sleeping?

Basically Mashiro steals the show yet again. Mikakunin is really exploiting her cuteness, and I have to say I am completely fine with that. That said, it’s not as if there was absolutely nothing besides cute lolis in this episode. We know from the premiere that Kobeni used to play with Hakuya when they were younger, but has forgotten these memories due to convenient amnesia. This time, the show digs a little deeper into these days of yore. Kobeni starting to remember that she used to visit the mountains frequently is a step forward. However, it doesn’t tell us any more than we already know. Hakuya insisting that the past be kept secret is rather suspicious though. We know that an accident was involved, and the fiancé reveals that he was responsible for it. Or at least, it would appear he feels responsible for the incident. No more details beyond that for now though. But I wonder if it’s really such a big deal. After all, Kobeni seems to be an ordinary and healthy young girl aside from a few lost memories.

Aliens and Cryptids

Mashiro wants scones.

And that’s about it plot-wise. Comedy-wise we have Mashiro being childish as usual with her fear of aliens and cryptids and her taste for sweet snacks (to be fair, jam and scones with royal milk tea does sound very appetizing). And then there’s more of Benio teasing her at home and at school. Fortunately for the cute loli though, it looks like Benio’s vice president will keep her in check in the latter setting. Finally, there’s Mashiro sort of letting the cat out of the bag to Kobeni’s dismay. But it seems people are more concerned about her sticking around Benio-sama than with Kobeni, so I guess all’s well that ends well. As usual, all of this is humorous enough to watch, but nothing much to talk about. I do feel obligated to mention Kobeni’s child-bearing hips though. Because, well, that sure is a nice compliment for a girl, right?

Extra Lolis

For a second episode, I have to say Mikakunin hasn’t really wowed me in any way. It’s fun enough as it is, but I feel like it lacks a bit of “oomph” in spite of all the cuteness and light-hearted comedy. Also, this is turning out to be one show that’s really hard to write about, simply because there isn’t much to write about. That’s not to say this is a bad quality of the show, but I hope it will change in future episodes or these posts are going to continue being very terse.

…and that would make it a hard show to comment on, seeing as how you covered the bases. But for me, the fear that Mashiro has for aliens and cryptids is kinda telling. I kinda felt like the writing was underscoring how silly it is to be afraid of things that are patently unreal, and that could tie into what Kobeni is forgetting.

    Yeah, that’s a reach.

I should also point out that the show stomped on one of my pet peeves. If you say aliens came in spaceships, then it cannot be a UFO. It would be an IFO.

The name and the opening somehow points at something more than Mashiro’s fear for aliens. It’s hinted everywhere in the show that aliens will have a bigger role sometime.

      • Sumairii says:

Well if by bigger role you mean the show will continue to exploit Mashiro’s fear of aliens for cute reactions, then perhaps. I highly doubt aliens will actually show up though.

Too much Mashiro. You loli-liking guys might be interested, but either the show is My Kid loli Sister-in-Law is So Funny! or it’s something that actually has some legs and plot. Hopefully this will be enough of “Mashiro’s so cute with her liking western food and sweets and being scared of everything and acting precocious.”

I liked that Hakuya actually seemed to be a person this time, albeit a quiet and hardly saying anything person. I think he needs some personality for the show to work, he can’t just be like Suguru Koshigaya. I really see two paths for the show. Either it says ‘enough of Mashiro’ and gets on with Kobeni and Hakuya, or it’s the All Mashiro Hijinx All The Time 4-koma. The former I’m interested, the latter sounds pretty dull.

The former I can write about. The latter, not so much…

It should. I agree that there is to much Mashiro centric affairs going on.

I have the habit of looking at the time every time Mashiro appears. She’s turning into an annoyance.

Too much Mashiro? I kinda feel she is the glue of the series without her how would everyone at school know they are living with Kobeni? I also kind of feel that the other cast of characters besides Benio feel flat and boring plus I don’t really like Hakuya’s idea of keep the past hidden from Kobeni that is really dumb to me because I would have thought sharing that info with her would be a GOOD thing to bring them together? Whatever I guess it has to be that way.

      • AllenAndArth says:

but, even then…the show is not about her

      • skylion says:

That Kaguya is keeping the past bottle up may develop into a bad idea, it’s part of the process. I do like he feels that the whatever debt she would be in to him, is not something he would want her to pay. Dude has some stand up right there.

  3. anaaga says:

Too much Mashiro, and she’s definitely overshadowing the plot that develops slowly. I think what they did is right with the plot, but uughhh Mashirooooo. There needs to be more interaction between Hakuya and Kobeni. This is a show about them, not Mashiro

    • Sumairii says:

I personally enjoy Mashiro enough to tolerate her excessive presence so far. But I have to agree if this goes on for much longer the show will just get stale. Plus, as many have noted this is supposed to be all about Hakuya and Kobeni.

    • Foshizzel says:

@Anaaga: Well shes the iconic moe loli and they tend to be the focus of most anime series I mean look at Non Non Biyori Renge does have episodes JUST for her and HER alone and yes I know we all want to see Hakuya talk with Kobeni I just can’t see that happening until episode 5 or 6 since we only have 12 episodes to work with.

@Sumairii: Same Mashiro is a great character and I feel she obviously has the most personality next to Benio of course, but I get that most people find her annoying I guess that never ever happens to me LOL

  4. BlackBriar says:

Mashiro was in tsundere overdrive. It would have been annoying were it not used in a comedic way along with the fact she’s continually being stalked by Benio. Still, it would have been better if she didn’t hog most of the spotlight.

    • skylion says:

I think her character has done’s the job. Benio is now in full big sister mode with her, and is not at all averse to it. We will see more antics from her, but those will take a back seat to the main character development.

  5. AllenAndArth says:

Hakuya is my new idol… the patience of a saint…and he has emotions! i was shocked and he was adamant so that Kobeni didn’t know about it…and it seems that he has an injury from his past… Mashiro is really cute, Benio is still scary as she goes brainwashing people…go vice president o/
    nice childbearing hips Kobeni!

    • Foshizzel says:

He is soooooooooooooo boring though -_-

      • AllenAndArth says:

THAT! is why he’s so cool… i bet Koto could drop by with her hammer and he still would be cool and Hip, just like Kakashi and his awesome excuses…i used one the other day… it gave quite the sense of acomplishment when i didn’t start laughing like crazy at the time

      • anaaga says:

I can totally stare at his sexy face until my death *swoom*
