Log Horizon – 04

LogHorizon04 - Nyanta

The gentlemanly Were-Cat shows off his fighting prowess

spring13-jrowHey all, I’m rolling solo for this ep (and maybe some more) of Log Horizon, so I won’t be talking amongst myself or try to attempt Fosh’s captions or anything like that. We last left off with Shiroe and co. inching closer to finding Serara, setting up an inevitable PvP battle vs. the Brigandia Guild. How’d our heroes do? Quite well, as you might have assumed.

LogHorizon04 - Nyanta Midbattle

Nyanta is one cool cat, Nyaa~

Nyanta is BAMF, no doubt about it. Nakata Jouji throwing in nyaa~ after every sentence is the tip that got our own Kyokai on board with this series, and his personality, Class and camaraderie with Shiroe makes him a fantastic and enjoyable addition to the group. With Naotsugu being open pervert bro who amazingly went an entire episode without being kicked by Akatsuki, Chief Nyanta brings a calm demeanor to the group along with his very capable skills as a Swashbuckler.

LogHorizon04 - TBH

This is what “Game Over” looked like for the Brigandia Guild

I thought the pacing of the battle was pretty good, all things considered. Detailing game mechanics from an MMORPG in anime could have had a negative effect on the flow of battle, but like a video game, we’re early in Log Horizon and this stuff is here to help us learn about gameplay. I felt the flow was solid enough for Satelight’s portraying of an RPG-style battle that the explanations didn’t bog down my enjoyment of the battle. If you just lazily open up a game manual and start reading it off during an episode, it wouldn’t be all that fun. Ya know, I do kind of miss when game manuals actually did have more than 4 pages or when Nintendo was printing them in color, but I’ve been more than happy to accept the trade-off of having instructions in-game.

LogHorizon04 - Akatsuki

Nope, not healing your big bad boss today, nuh-uh

Planning wasn’t needed in this battle as it was basically having everyone follow Shiroe’s lead. Brigandia doesn’t exactly look like a well-organized guild anyway, so this battle was almost like shooting fish in a barrel. Nyanta and Naotsugu getting their hit points cut significantly, those guys didn’t have a shred of doubt crossing their mind so long as Shiroe was barking out orders, even for Serara who was used as a healing screen to attract attention while Akatsuki got in position to take out Demikas’ healers. The members of the Debauchery Tea Party (of at least who we’ve seen so far) are still very in tune with each other and very trusting in Shiroe’s strategies. It also makes Akatsuki question if she can be helpful to Shiroe and the others. A lone Assassin is questioning her worth to her Lord and the team… go figure.

LogHorizon04 - Druid

A PvP kill has never looked more adorable

The question Shiroe’s opponents are going to have to answer is… how do you survive Thorn Bind Hostage? Shiroe’s mastery on the timing of that move took out a Lvl. 90 with such ease thanks to his .22 second recasting and Nyanta’s fast rapier attacks + debuffs. While you wouldn’t expect all that to leave Demikas with a single HP, it is a humorous bit of insult to injury to have the final blow come from a Lvl. 19 Druid. Serara beats Demikas, day is saved.

All my Yesssss! This was worth the episode by itself. Yeah, call me a moeblob now!

  2. Di Gi Kazune says:

Nyanta will be the final villian in the end… Azoth!

I like the way they are constructing rational explanations for why the heroes are winning their fights. It would be easy enough to state that, yo! they’re awesome, and leave it at that. instead they are developing a world with its own internal consistency. Hopefully this will really pay off in the future.

Log Horizon just keeps getting better with every new episode. For allies that haven’t seen each other in a while, Shiroe and Nyanta make a fearsome team though they’re making things up as they go along. No way I could believe they had the whole thing planned out from the start. It’s a good thing they’re friends instead of enemies.

It’s mostly the calm and collected individuals that turn out to be the most deadly. Akatsuki is like that but more of a loyal servant patiently waiting for the next command while Nyanta is more of the (flamboyant) gentleman type. And it’s an obligation for cat characters to throw out “nyaa”, an obligation that must be met at all times.

Thanks for taking over for this week on Log Horizon Jrow! I will be back and ready to take on our usual mini-talks for this series~

I loved watching Nyanta kick so much ass and along with Serara being revealed as a healer class? AWESOME! The main trio needs a healer type, but I think she will probably stick with Nyanata for the rest of the series or will they join up with Shiroe and friends? I could honestly see them building a new guild.

The thorn attack is kind of getting over used imo! I mean sure it is a badass spell and it comes in handy when dealing with bosses or players, but I really want to see Shiroe use other spells.

Good stuff this week and yes Serara is one of the cutest characters so far xD

I want to be swashbuckler class. I already have two reproduction rapiers. Unfortunately, I don’t have the coolness and speed of Nyanta.

I’m sure everybody knew Nyanta was going to be pure badass with those rapiers of his, but he combined that with a level of suaveness that the rest of us can only dream about. He’s become my favorite character in this show.

      Take up fencing?

      • HannoX says:

I did a little foil in college. And I have several manuals on rapier fighting, including a modern reprint (in English) of one by Italian master Capo Ferro, first published in 1610.

    • skylion says:

Where is his buckler? He has enough swash as it is…

      • HannoX says:

But twin rapiers is so much more swashbuckling than even rapier and buckler.

        • skylion says:

I agree with you in style, but not in substance. I am a bit meticulous that way.

          • HannoX says:

Does Nyanta have a belt? If so, he could use his belt buckle to buckle his swash.

            • skylion says:

              Unknown. And Maybe.

            • skylion says:

Swashbuckler is a fine term. But I don’t think it fits. Duelist would be much better. The classes style depends alot on speed and debuffs. Which, given that the dual wield style of Italian fencing was based on foot work to tangle opponents up, repostes, and spoken insults, fits the character to a T. Swashing a buckle usually meant smacking the shield to make noise. It was originally meant to be an insult.

      • Di Gi Kazune says:

        Har-har~

He just needs 3 swords on each hand. 😛 (and 10 Command Spells).
