Blood Lad – 03

Feels like only two days ago I was writing a Blood Lad post. Oh wait. I was. Well anyway we’re back for more with 80% less delay! This week, the cast picks up a werewolf. Because whenever you have a vampire, you just gotta have a werewolf to balance things out.

A Bet With An Old Friend

Appropriately named, Wolf is our new werewolf friend, who turns out to be Staz’s long time friend. The guy has been making a name for himself in West Demon World, which has mostly become one large territory under his name thanks to his beating up the other bosses. And yes, West Demon World is set up like some stereotypical Western film town, complete with tumbleweed demons. After a manly reunion, Staz and Wolf strike a deal over a match. If Staz wins, Wolf will get him the Book of Human Resurrection; if Wolf wins, Staz will give him Fuyumi. The plan is simple: Staz will rope Wolf into a bowling game. As he possesses long-distance manipulation magic while Wolf possesses close-range strengthening magic, the vampire will naturally be at an advantage. Thanks to some intervention from Bell, however, what was supposed to be an easy win for Staz turns into a boxing match, tipping the scales in the werewolf’s favor. Long story short, Staz manages to beat the odds and come out on top in the end thanks to some devious methods. But I guess this just goes to show his determination to bring Fuyumi back from the dead. Speaking of which, I thought it was a very good move for Blood Lad to again bring Staz’s motives under scrutiny. While it may have come about this time in a goofy manner thanks to Fuyumi’s outfit enticing Wolf, Staz’s reluctance to answer the simple question of what he plans to do with the girl once he brings her back is pretty telling. Wolf insinuates that he knows Staz just wants her blood, but I have a feeling the vampire himself isn’t quite so sure of this now in spite of his previous words. So now we have two important developments: Staz knows Fuyumi is special to him, and he’s also starting to realize it’s probably not because he wants to sink his fangs into her neck. Looks like the Staz-Fuyumi ship is set to sail.

Trolls and More

Trololo

It looks like Bell has had some mixed reception since she first appeared. This is understandable; she is a massive troll. I can’t believe how she’s able to pull so much shit on pretty much everyone else. Last time she fooled Staz into a smackdown with an oni over a pair of tiger-stripped underwear. This time, she’s got him in a fist fight with his old friend to retrieve the Book of Human Resurrection. And guess what? She had it all along. Well, the episode title from the preview last time did spoil it for us, but it still goes to show that she’s the one in control. What Staz needs to do is get it in his head that he can’t trust the wily magician under any circumstance. She’s clearly playing him for a fool. That said, I personally don’t find Bell too disagreeable. She’s definitely not someone I would want to deal with myself, but seeing Staz suffer her antics is just fine with me. Part of me does want to see him pay her back for all her grievances, but somehow I doubt that’ll ever happen. Staz may be a pretty intelligent guy himself, but he’s nowhere near as sharp as Bell. Moving on, it looks like we’ll be introduced to Staz’s big bro next time. As the author of the indecipherable Book of Human Resurrection, he would supposedly know how to restore Fuyumi. But of course, it would again be too easy if the gang just had to go and ask a family member for help. So we have a new wrinkle in the form of some trauma Staz has with his older brother. Obviously they’ll still pay the guy a visit in his flying castle though, so I’m guessing the next segment will involve Staz finally building up the courage to stand up to his scary big bro. Or maybe he’ll just chicken out and have to rely on the gang. If Braz really is this big a deal though, I can’t imagine even Bell being of any help. But who knows?

Another solid episode of Blood Lad in my eyes. I will say that the show so far does seem to be rather flighty, which some might not appreciate. Staz’s quest to resurrect Fuyumi has pretty much turned into a wild-goose chase at this point, and there’s no guarantee that it’ll ever end. Heck, I would be very much surprised if they could bring Fuyumi back in the flesh after convincing Braz to give up the secret. It will probably turn out that they have to go hunting for some super rare ingredients in some very dangerous locations to do so or something. And in the process, they’ll obviously have to face off against some bad guys who are there just to get in the way and impede their progress. But if you’re like me and you’re enjoying this apparently endless ordeal for what it is, then this is just fine. I could watch ten episodes of Staz and his friends just goofing off and it would still be entertaining
