As expected, this week was a stunning visual display of the new recruits flying around like Spiderman…at three times the speed. Unfortunately, I came across a bit of a spoiler on Tumblr while just browsing my dashboard, so the big kicker at the end wasn’t quite as big of a shock as I would have liked. It was still prettyyyyyyyyy big though. |
I usually try to maintain at least a small shred of eloquence in my posts, but I can’t but begin my post by saying “HOLY SHIT.” Because, really. Stop and think about that episode for a second. Holy shit. I could rave about the visuals alone endlessly. That’s only part of what makes this show great though. My main attraction to Shingeki no Kyojin is how it plays with the difference between hope and despair, flicking between the two faster than the heads of spectators at a tennis match. Hope is followed by despair. Despair is then followed by hope. The cycle repeats again and again, and I always fall prey to getting my hopes up. After such a long period of peace and hard training, I was expecting the new recruits to really show their worth. It felt like they could make some new advancements that the Recon corps. couldn’t do previously and finally inch forward towards freedom. Haha. HAHAHA. No.
What actually happened was that the new recruits crumbled under the pressure. All that wistful talking on the wall made me forget that seeing a giant, flesh-eating monster for the first time and being told you have to fight it is terrifying. A lot of the recruits freak out – including Armin. The beauty of Armin is that he’s not thinking “I have to escape!” but trying desperately to persuade himself to fight. He can intellectualize all the reasons in the world why he should (and wants to) fight back, but that can’t change his puny rabbit heart beating like a drum in his chest. He’s paralyzed with fear.
Again, the beauty of Attack on Titan is how it builds hope up first before dashing it. Even after we see a bunch of the recruits throwing up and freaking out, Eren manages to raise everyone’s morale and make things seem hopeful again. After all, he did very nearly take out the Colossal Titan all by himself if it hasn’t teleported away in a puff of smoke. Unfortunately, the Titans are a lot more intelligent than the teachers at Titan-Killing School ever realized. They don’t just stagger around like zombies looking for the fastest path from where they are now to getting delicious brains. While they do possess the same single-minded determination where even having their entire lower half blown off won’t stop them, the Titans one up the zombies by being surprisingly strategic in their attacks.
First of all, the Titans are actually pretty damn fast. Walking speed would already let them cover an insane amount of ground considering the distance just one step is for them, but they have enough tenacity to run and leap at prey. I was not expecting those things to move so darn fast and actually pluck the Recon corps out of the air. Secondly, the Colossal Titan can teleport. If the other Titans can also do the same thing, then the human race is doomed. Last of all, they’re smart enough to attack the gates to make an opening. All school taught them was that Titans only kill humans, that they have one weak spot, and that they shoot out hot steam from their bodies. I really hope they update their lectures after this if there’s anything left of the school.
I quite liked learning about the Titans in between all the carnage. It fit in perfectly with what was happening, and it still gave us a lot of info about what these monstrosities could possibly be. I’m dying to figure out more about them too. What creature would live just for the purpose of killing humans, and not need to take in any other food? Are they secretly giant machines releasing steam from their bodies? I can only hope I don’t accidentally read spoilers somewhere, because this show surprises me at every turn and I want to revel in the magic.
I knew Eren was going to die beforehand thanks to a spoiler, and was still surprised. Killing off the main character is always a huge shock to the system, especially after all this effort is put into building them up as a character. Eren has been steadily becoming a better person these past few years, and I thought we would continue to see him grow. Instead, he loses an arm and a leg and gets swallowed by a giant Santa Claus. To reiterate my previous point: holy shit. Now maybe Eren will crawl out of that thing’s belly and survive with just a few less limbs to work with, but that would be incredibly stupid. If you’ve spent all that time setting up a bait-and-switch where Armin gets saved, then you’d better follow through and keep Eren bathing in those gastric juices until he’s fully digested!
So who is our new main character? Mikasa? Armin? Or is the “main character” just the entire police force and Recon corps? Mikasa has broken her promise and one of her main reasons for living, so how will she keep on living? Armin is still terrified of the Titans so will he man up and be the new hero or stay a coward forever? Who would you guys want to be the new lead character? I think Potato Girl might be a good candidate…

Eh, this show’s starting to lose me in the same way that I view Valvrave. “Let’s do cool stuff, and not worry about what it does to the story!”
I have no idea where it’s going to go. We had, what, 16 named characters, and now approximately 10 of them are dead in about 10 minutes of screen time, for absolutely no point, just to smash into our skulls “All the humans are powerless against the Titans”. I’m actually seriously hoping that this was ‘all a dream’ or some silly gimmick like that, otherwise, this whole development is more annoying than Muv-Luv’s beginning two episodes. There we set up a bunch of stuff and characters, only to kill them all off, and while it made some sense overall, it still felt like they could have handled it better. This time they’ve done the same thing, but taken 5 episodes.
I dunno, like I said, the show’s kind of losing me. I just don’t see where it’s going to go.

Actually I had a feeling Thomas and the rest were going to bite the dust this episode since they were hardly introduced and weren’t in the drill sergeant’s exposition dealing with the supporting characters in the beginning of last episode. When getting rid of characters always go with the ones who had little to no screentime first unless they have built up to the important characters death.
As to not seeing where the story is going, I think I’m a bit opposite in a way as that’s one of my favorite things in a storyline. That’s why Valvrave and this are my favorites this season. I think it’s because I have either read or seen almost every single scenerio there could be in a plot and so I like it when the writers are able to surprise me, even if the twist just happens to be gratuitous or just for shock value. I like not being able to see what’s coming. But then again that’s just a matter of my own personal likes in a story/series.

The problem with both this and Valvrave is that there *isn’t* anywhere for them to really go that’s not just ‘because we say so’. So while it might be fun to not know what they’re going to do next, it’s also narratively deficient, since what went before doesn’t really inform what comes after (and is in fact blatantly ignored or mocked).

I do think that one thing Attack on Titan has that Valvrave doesn’t is that this show has source material to draw from, so we know that they are not just pulling this stuff out of thin air. And since the mangaka has done such a good job as to win acclaim and awards for this work, I’ll give them the benefit of the doubt that they are going somewhere with this and its all part of the central plot line. We as being introduced through the anime though, don’t know where this story will take us.

I don’t think any of this was done without a plan. They wanted us to get invested in these characters so that their deaths would be more meaningful. I think killing off a main character shows a lot of guts.

Right now, I hope that all those secondary characters were killed off so easily because there’s something a lot more big and crazy to come. And I know for sure, that it is, because my BFF reads the manga, and fanboys about it in my presence. I threatened him with slow and painful death if he spoiled anything to me, but he still said one thing – you have no idea what you’re up to. In a good way, and I trust him completely.
So let’s hope that this is the case ^^ Although personally, I don’t think that this show came to the point where it’s just perpetually throwing corpses in our faces. It’s very realistic. Because if you order a bunch of teenagers to move to the front you don’t seriously expect them to be all badass and kill off the titans one after another. I think this also highlights the flaws in their strategy.

Holy Mother of the Biggest Cheesball in Sweden! Eren was a total BADASS. There is no way he is stewing in gastric juices. He saved his friend with one leg. The stack of f*cks that Eren gives about facing Titans is so thin it can only be measured by the most advanced of electron microscopes.
Yeah, this show loves to gut punch you in all the unlovely ways that it can. The writer/s must have stayed away at night thinking all the ways they can portray bloody carnage in a unique visual way. Or are kept up nights. Regardless we get to see the spectacle.
I cannot find it anywhere, but someone macro’d Richard Stallman’s “correction” of Linux and GNU/Linux on that Santa Titan’s image capture. Just google the name. It was funny for us Linux users.
I vote for Sasha as the new MC. Cannot get enough of the awesome that is Potato Girl….

Wow, just wow was this episode something. This episode had it all. Emotion, tragedy, tenderness, even a little comedy, and within it all was just an utter masterpiece. The characters were great, Eren was amazing, the Titans fearsome, the action glorious, the writing superb and the music was beyond words.
You get to see all the recruits get put to the ultimate test and many of them are unfortunately found wanting. We learn that the Titans are pretty much unstoppable machines that want nothing but to kill human just because. They were truly more fearsome this episode than they were when they first appeared.
I loved the pep talk that Eren gave Jean and how it served to inspire him and others. Eren has grown into quite a charismatic leader and that end part where he went to save Armin even in the face that he has a concussion and lost a leg, that was awesome. Honestly, I can’t see Eren as being gone. If he cuts his way out of the Titan I wouldn’t be surprised.
Now interestingly there is some downtime as we are shown a pudgy aristocrat (they still have those in this sort of environment?) and the Commander Pixie (yes, I know his name is Pixis, but Pixie just sounds cuter :D). I’m wondering how he and his men will fit into the story.
How will Mikasa take the news of Eren’s death? Since it was her last promise she made to her adopted mother was to protect Eren, and the fact that Eren is the only family she has left, I don’t think she’s going to take it well. I do think that Armin will be stepping it up big time in the coming episodes.
With 20 or so episodes to go, how will we go from here? How will the humans be able to fight these things? I seriously think they need to completely rethink their strategies here and think of some new weapons and ways to kill the Titans. They really need something a little more long range.
I can thankfully say I only read one spoiler for this show on accident and so I was sufficiently shocked by the ending of the episode. (However, the one spoiler I did read I now realize takes place a bit after this episode so that’s a little annoying but takes some of the bite away.)
This is the second episode this season that I will give a 10/10 to. Good job WIT studios, you continue to amaze me.

Seriously, call me a fangirl, but this definitely is one of the best-managed shows I’ve ever seen. Judging only by these 5 episodes.
Seriously, there is no way the authors will lose such a main character, it would pretty much destroy the show. I don’t say that it would be bad, but Eren is already a very big part of what makes Shingeki no Kyojin Shingeki no Kyojin. Of course, it would be too much if he cut his way out of the titan’s stomach, because he simply won’t have the strength to do anything because of the blood loss. Let alone all that pain from losing 2 limbs.

Eren looks pretty darn dead, and I kind of hope they follow through on that. He could technically cut himself out or claw his way back up the throat, but I doubt he could be a member of the Recon corps. anymore. So either way, he wouldn’t really be a main character any more. It’s kind of a shame that the episode he acts as a great leader and fierce fighter that he gets eaten :/
I’m curious about the inner city rich folk too. I hope we see more of them soon and Pixis (who reminds me of pixies too).

Personally, I’d be happy if Eren is gone. I don’t like his character and his going off half-cocked got his team slaughtered. If he somehow survives I don’t see the experience humbling him and getting him to think before he acts. No, he’d be even more determined to kill all the Titans and charging blindly ahead with bad consequences for anyone around him. That’s not the kind of soldier to have in your unit. Single-minded obsessive characters are dangerous. Look at what happened to Ahab’s crew.
I think (hope) we’ll see a lot more of Pixis. He seems like the kind of officer who’s a good leader and an effective soldier. Perhaps Mikasa, Sasha and Armin and the other surviving recruits end up in his unit. As for a new MC, Mikasa would seem a good candidate. She was number one in her training unit, she has plenty of motivation to kill Titans and she’d not be as reckless as Eren. If anyone can kill Titans, it’d be Mikasa.
However, I have a hunch that Eren will miraculously survive.

The thing is, that if he survives he will have the chance to learn, that while loving your friends and protecting them is a good thing, charging into a fight without a strategy but with a very hot head isn’t the right thing to do. He understood that during his last quarrel with Jean, so he is definitely not as dense as you claim he is. His bloodlust will probably get more extreme, but I think he will become more coldblooded and mature.

I like Eren during battles, but when he’s preaching to others in every day life he’s a bit annoying. I want him to stay dead, but I’m on the fence about whether or not they’ll somehow bring him back :/
I like Pixis too. He seems like the type who knows a lot more than he lets on, but in a good-natured way.
Hmm, Mikasa is featured heavily in the ED too so maybe she’s the new MC? I think it’s between her and Armin, but the latter is a bit of a scaredy-cat at the moment.

Holy crap. My mouth just dropped at the ending and I was flailing around trying to digest everything. I was not expecting Eren to get eaten. It was already bad enough he lost an arm but sheesh. 0_0. I’m wondering if he actually is dead or not(avoiding spoilers from the manga like the plague). There were plot points set up about Eren in previous episodes(the syringe thing with the dad) that killing him off would mean those would probably go unanswered. I have no idea how he could even come back even if he did get out of the Titan and how would he be able to kill Titans without an arm and a leg?(Unless he pulls an Edward Elric…)
I really loved the explanation of what the Titans were but dang…they aren’t bothered by anything but eating humans? 0_o I feel like there’s going to be a deep dark secret revealed later on that gives us a real explanation to what the Titans are and what purpose they have. Oh and how the Colossal Titan can just teleport without a trace. That would be lovely to know.

There’s no need for eloquence when you’ve been hit with something that shakes you to the core. Mon dieu!! Quel horreur!! Pardon the use of French but this was so nerve wracking that something slipped out. Seriously, where the hell is this story going with this? I expected death, yes, of those who grew close but the lead biting the dust while he was becoming so badass?! As if losing limbs wasn’t bad enough. Just when it didn’t seem possible, the level of helplessness and despair suddenly raised.
In the midst of all the chaos, I had to give props to the staff that were behind the great animation when Eren was swinging through the city. The guy is a medieval Spider-Man. If this was an IMAX movie, a lot of people would lose themselves.
So basically from the explanation, the Titans exist for the sole purpose of killing humans and it makes me wonder if this isn’t some sick, twisted agenda for fate to test mankind’s survival ability to account for some possible arrogance as a species. Ah, this is getting too deep yet it does feels like the case.
What made everything even more painful to watch as each friend died was that Eren, who has become an exceptional motivational speaker, was giving them all hope that they’d survive. I haven’t been this emotional since seeing Yuki die in Psycho-Pass. It does well to prove a quote from The Dark Knight Rises: “There can be no true despair without hope”.
Overall, this episode gains an effortless 10/10 with me. Though anxiety is killing me trying to anticipate how things go from here now that there are still 20 episodes left. Yep, MAL confirms this is a 25 episode series.

Ah, my beloved français, it does seem appropriate for this setting and this episode. Oui, there may be death and despair, but it is not the end. We have only gone a fifth through the series so there is more to come. I hope Eren does return despite the 1/1000000 odds against, he is awesome and really grows as the series goes on. I doubt that after all his determination, a little thing like death will stop him. This is not the end. Night has not come.

OHGOD. OHGOD. OHGOD. The screaming we did in this episode. Also it seems we all won our bets on who’s going to die… and lost, too. I really didn’t think Eren would bite the dust.
But I’m still holding on to the hope that Eren could still survive. I mean, he lost a leg and still saved Armin. I’m sure he isn’t going to sit there in a Titan’s stomach languishing while he cooks in high-temp gastric juices. At the very least he’s going to carve his way out with one arm, mark my words. If there’s anything we know about him is that he keeps trying until he gets dragged away literally or due to circumstance. I think he’s they type to work it out to his last limb.
I would beg to differ – I really like him as a character (though not my favorite, he’s still up there in my Top 5 *cough*) and I actually look forward to his motivational get-your-shit-together speeches. And as the MC he has the right mix of strengths and flaws, with the best amount of development. I can’t see Mikasa or anyone else who can fill that position plotwise. I wanna see him survive!
In any case. This show really is all about the shock value and Mood Whiplashes. I hope that the next episode won’t fully be a flashback after all that adrenaline. Now that would be 1) just cruel, 2) further temptation to read the manga and 3) Psycho Pass ep 11/12 all over again.

About the next episode’s fillerific potential, you’re absolutely right. It would be cruel, though I will NOT read the manga(only after I finish anime) and this will be much more extreme than Psycho-Pass. I swear, the latter, while being amazing, is a far cry from Shingeki no Kyojin when it comes to raw emotion and shock that it evokes in it’s watchers. I WANT TO SEE EREN ALIVE AGAIN! ><""

I like how this is the show people are picking to watch with others. It pulls so many twists and surprises that it’s perfect to watch with someone else and scream alongside them ahaha.
Oh man, I do not wanna see a half-dissolved Eren fly out of that massive stomach. It’s possible given his tenacity but…give it a rest, dude! You got eaten! Let me really feel the despair by dying forever! I agree that Armin and Mikasa seem like lacking stand-ins for Eren, but I think they might rise to the occasion now.
I think they might start off with a flashback to build tension and then after all that teasing give us some more action. The preview did show some more of the recruits scrambling around, so we DO get to see the aftermath. :3

Well saw this coming a mile away. And by that I mean it was pretty obvious from watching the series that almost everyone was going to die at the end of the episode. I had a feeling that they wouldn’t shy away from killing main characters like Eren in some dramatic way, but I didn’t expect them to do so in the fifth episode. Maybe it speaks to my character but when Eren was swallowed I did a “go figure” laugh/facepalm.
I really liked how they explained the Titan’s anatomy at the school. One major confusion I had with the Titans was how they could possibly survive 100 years without their primary source of food (I assumed that many Titans would have consumed everything edible in the land in short order). Normally something as huge as them would have to eat a ton of food to keep going, so I had a hard time believing they were still around. Normally my default explanation would be magic (because their energy has the come from somewhere), but since there seems to be no magic in this world it’s probably something else. For all we know it could be some homunculus alchemy straight out of Fullmetal Alchemist. I suppose it might be discovered later in the series if the humans live that long.
I guess this series will shift to his sister now or Armin.

I didn’t see this coming at all. I could see all the side characters dying this week and maybe Armin or Mikasa later on…but not Eren.
Yeah, I liked the small tidbits of info they gave us. If they don’t need food, how do they survive? What fuels them? It answers some questions and raises some new ones. I’m curious about how they’ll explain the Titans in full later on too because the world has no magic…it’s normal, but it just happens to have giant monsters walking around…

The only thing I could think about after watching this episode – HOLY SHIT. For a lot of various reasons. Starting from the eyecandy, finishing with Eren basically becoming the second Show ▼
I don’t think they will kill off Eren. While I see that possibility, it’s less likely, because at this point, humanity needs some kind of a back door to get a chance to defeat the titans. At the end of the 4th episode I still thought they had, but now that we’ve seen that titans do jump, run and do other things to get their prey…. And I think that that back door is in connection with Eren’s father. He was giving him some kind of injections, right? So I’m wondering if Eren will develop power of regeneration, just like the titans have. That would be a bit off, but at this point I don’t know what else to expect.
That cliffhanger was one of the very best, I swear! And I also have a good guess about the reason why the titans specifically eat humans, even though they don’t have to eat at all. They don’t have any genitalia, right? So what if by some crazy reason they eat humans to reproduce, and people who they ate also turned into titans? *~* I’m overthinking, but I can’t stoooop~ ><" Don't kill off Ereeeeen~ TT^TT

So many people are hopeful about Eren coming back! It says a lot about how rules in anime work…it’s not dead until you see a body. Even then, it could still revive somehow.
I feel like Eren’s dad was giving him something bad, but that would be really cool if he actually did something helpful to his son. I dunno if he’d regenerate fast enough to survive all the blood loss though.
How would the people they eat turn into Titans if they’re…eaten? Like with zombies, they just give you a nip and you turn into one, but how do you become a Titan when you’ve been chewed to pieces? The anatomy of the Titans is a mystery I’m just not ready to figure out yet…

Sometimes I’m actually thankful for that rule, because right now my fangirl heart doesn’t want to see Eren dead 😀 And I probably won’t, because killing off the main character is way too risky, but still, that situation was so terribly bad!
Yeah, he was, but it had to have a reason. Eren’s dad didn’t leave an impression of a crazy person. I actually quite liked him, even though we saw him properly only once.
I don’t know, that’s just my imagination going wild but I can’t see any other reason why titans should kill humans. There has to be something there, because it’s definitely not instinct or anything like that. My brain is boiling

Fun fact: Potato Girl was the initial reason why I started watching this in the first place (until the recommendations reached critical mass and practically forced me to watch the thing). That infamous animated gif kept turning up on Tumblr and Twitter, and had to find out what was going on!
Killing off the main character is an interesting one…on the rare occasions where I’ve seen it happen it does pull the rug from under you. It does beg the question though: who’s going to fill the gap? Were all his pep talks and that character development for nothing? Is he going to emerge the next day from a pile of Titan poop screaming “I’m not dead yet, losers!”? I can’t wait to find out!
I’m really appreciating the world-building here though. The Titans give a convenient excuse to design medieval/steampunk towns with HUGE walls, gates and weapons…and I noticed little touches like the boats in the canals apparently propelled by wheels and belts instead of oars or sails…a bit weird, but my inner nerd seems to dig those flourishes of imagination.
Oh, yeah. The Spiderman-style rooftop scenes were stunningly choreographed. Blimey. *_*

Potato Girl is a good a reason as any to start watching! Was the gif the one of the “Titan” dancing around those schoolgirls?
It’s hard to tell who will fill the gap since Eren has been hogging the spotlight. They might go for the shock factor AGAIN and make it a more obscure character other than Armin or Mikasa. I don’t think they’d do that, but there are a lot of possibilities of where the show can go from here – Eren reviving being one of those options.
I didn’t even notice the boats being built like that! Neat! I’ll have to pay more attention to the construction of things.

My engineer-self hated the boats. There are so many other things that are related to that mechanically that would be much more efficient with less physical plant required. But that happens frequently in shows like this.
