Shingeki no Kyojin – 04

Shingeki no Kyojin 009

Time for some traditional military training in the art of “getting served.”

The whole time everyone was hopping through the forest and trying to find a target, I couldn’t help but think of the early Naruto days. They’ve got one guy standing here and grading them as they jump around like monkeys and try to stab things – outwitting each other all the while. It’s probably better they don’t know ninjutsu or else taking down these Titans would be over faster than you could say “BELIEVE IT!”.

Great, just go on and describe every character in a convenient summary after I try and make a nice little character page. Thanks. On the bright side, we get some more concrete information about the fighting capabilities and personalities of the recruits. Annie in particular didn’t even say anything last week, but this week she has a major scene. It’s also a lot easier to see where everyone stands now that they’ve been ranked from 1 to 10. All of the main cast made the cut…except for Armin.

I was a bit surprised that Eren did so well and that Armin ended up being the weak one. I hope this doesn’t raise the death flag for him (yet) because I have yet to see another character who is known for their keen intellect. That sort of skill can make things a hell of a lot more interesting further along the road. Unfortunately, I don’t know quite how he’ll put that brainpower to use when his main job is based on fighting. He’s got the mind game down pat, but his body can barely keep up. It’s actually good to see that Eren is excelling, because it means less complaining about Yuki Kaji playing another whiny wimp. Eren preaches a bit too much for my liking, but at least he never complains and always comes back from everything that pushes him down.

Shingeki no Kyojin 001Shingeki no Kyojin 010

…Yeah, I dunno how he ranked so high either.

On one hand, his mind set is very admirable. The recruits are clearly split between slackers who just want to get through this crap to live in the inner city and hardworkers doing their best in every single drill. Eren is one of those rare, hard-working individuals. On the other hand, he won’t let anyone else have an opinion other than his. He’s largely right about the Titans eventually breaking into the inner city, but I don’t like the way he treats anyone who doesn’t want to join the Recon corps. as scum. Just because you’re right doesn’t mean you should put everyone down in the process. Some people just want to join the police because they truthfully want to work for the King.

I think this is just how Eren works as a person though. He’s passionate, and tends to phrase things in extremes so he elicits a strong reaction from his audience. Maybe it’s because everyone grew up being passively content inside the walls that he thinks he needs to be so dramatic about everything just to get their attention. I don’t know how much that will change. However, at least he’s able to recognize when others are just letting off steam because they’re upset. The weird thing is that instead of talking him down and saying “dude, I know you’re just trying to take it out on me, but chill” he sweeps him and knocks him on the floor. It was cool, but I’m pretty sure that’s not the best way to end arguments if you want to sympathize with the other person.

Eren really is a weird guy, and I’m not sure how I feel about him as the main character. He’s so over-the-top that it’s hard for me to relate to him. They show him improving in various ways such as getting a good rank, learning to spot the intentions of others, and copying a tricky sweeping technique from seeing it only a few times. However, at the core, he’s just a very intense boy who screams a lot and all this refinement isn’t really changing that.

Shingeki no Kyojin 014

PHOTOBOMBED!

I didn’t like this episode as much because there’s a lack of actual training (it was so short!) and Eren is harping on about the same ideals again and again. It went way too fast! I was ready to hunker down for some good old-fashioned hardcore training. It was only towards the end of the episode that things picked up for me again. Yes – when the Titans re-appeared.

It’s kind of sad that they tricked me. Think about it – the first episode practically had this message in bold text, all in caps (written in flashing lights, even). The first episode relentlessly told us to never ever accept these walls as being a sanctuary, and that the Titans could break in at any moment. No matter how long the pause from one attack to another, there is always a risk. Yet there I was, my guard completely down, not expecting the Titans for another few years.

Shingeki no Kyojin 015Shingeki no Kyojin 016

The sharp tone shift was pulled off really well, suddenly turning an almost wistful conversation into a hellish nightmare. I wasn’t expecting any big battles again so soon! The next episode is likely to be amazing and intense. There will be a lot of blood, death and suffering. I imagine some of the recruits seeing the Colossal Titan for the first time might turn a little chicken, but the rest should rise to the occasion. The aftermath is going to be SUPER depressing, and that will tell us a lot about these new recruits as well. We know Eren bounces back like a rubber ball, but is everyone else capable of that? Ahhh, I can’t wait~

Shingeki no Kyojin 013

Bonus hot and bothered potato girl getting worked up by a juicy piece of meat~

Preview: Everyone does their best to defend against the Colossal Titan, but I doubt they’ll come out of this unscathed. Armin in particular has a close brush with death…so close he may in fact he might just get painted over and die. Anything can happen!

Shingeki no Kyojin 018

That guy back there already died, and this is only the preview.

I found Eren’s approach to be rather textbook; and this episode had so much character lampshade hanging it might as well have been a narrative course on how to cover an exposed light bulb.

    …by the numbers.

As you pointed out, OC, we got cheated out of any extended training montages, but the name on the tin is Attack on Titan, not Boot Camp before we get a chance to Attack on Titan. As long as it’s Attack on Titan with Potato Girl*, I’m pretty much gonna be sold.

Yeah, getting a chance to go to the comfy city job looks like the best thing you can do for a long life. But, I have to side with Eren. They are going to come; and they come when you least expect it. Your survival inside the innermost walls is going to be a process of diminishing returns (for this societies’ going concern, I hope they are making tons of babies..something the Recon Corps may not have to worry about), and if I had to live there, give me a damn sword, and I will live and die with it in my hand. Survival under fear seems a rather dreadful outcome; and I would rather have the chance to succeed or die trying.

Oh, Sasha’s kick ass Big Damn Hero moment…Priceless.

*Now with 100% more Meat. I hope that Meat survives…

    • Liza says:

Sadly I don’t think that meat is going to make it. T_T RIP meat. You will be missed.

      • skylion says:

I have faith in The Meat. And I don’t think you will ever see me repeat that, here or elsewhere….

    • BlackBriar says:

LOL. I read somewhere that hope is the worst of evils for it prolongs the torment of man. You’re being tormented by the meat, Skylion. Let it go. It’s the only way to get peace of mind.

    • Overcooled says:

I guess if they went too slow then they’d never get to the good bits by the end of the series. I’m a little worried that the manga is ongoing and the anime will have to end at some point, but I’ll cross that bridge when we get to it.

Personally, I would try to get a position inside the inner walls as well. I get to live in safety and if Titans do attack, at least I’ve been trained and know what to do…even if that involves just running for my life. The police still get those awesome cable-cord flying things, yeah? But thinking the inner walls will protect you forever is stupid when something as big as that Colossal Titan is running amok.

  2. Highway says:

I didn’t think it was too bad. I’m not a huge fan of wasting time in training, especially when they’re not likely to give us advanced knowledge in how their windy things work.

I was a little rolleyed at the end. The first time we saw the ultra-titan, there were ground shocks for minutes before hand, and then he appeared over the wall. This time SURPRISE! he just pops up. So they’re up on top of the wall, looking all over the place (even not on ‘lookout’, they are looking out over the wall), and they don’t see this HUGE RED GUY sneaking up on them. Then “OH HAI!” and apparently the draft from his super fast rush up to them blew everyone off the wall.

It was a tad unbelievable, is what I’m saying.

    • skylion says:

I thought the Colossus came out of a bolt of lightning both times. Not there one moment, there the next….with no warning….

      • skylion says:

I would have to channel my dad, a retired machine tool and automated systems engineer, but I would call the windy things pure bull stuff. I can see the mechanics behind it, or how the mechanics are intended to work, but I cannot see how a culture can produce a box and assembly like that or such low weight that characters can slog it around like they had a kitten on each hip.
If there are other tech developments happening behind the scenes, that we haven’t scene yet, it might explain it, but we would have to see more advances right there in the set designs, wouldn’t we?

    • BlackBriar says:

He must have learned the Instant Transmission technique somewhere. From here to there in the blink of an eye and he came in with such speed that he blew them away.

    • belatkuro says:

Watch the first episode again. The first appearance of the Colossal Titan was also the same as this one. A huge crash(with a bolt of lightning effect), smoke coming out from outside the wall, Titan peeks over the wall, then BAM!
He didn’t really sneak/walk towards the wall, else there should have been more quakes beforehand rather than a single one. He just…appeared beside the wall.

      • Highway says:

Ahh, I thought I remembered some ground shaking foreshadowing.

Of course, that just makes it silly if this giant can just apparate right up to the wall.

        • skylion says:

gI don’t think it’s any more or less silly than how Mech’s are said to work. I think it adds a layer to what could be a stomp, stomp, munch, munch basis for the Titans/Giants.

          • Overcooled says:

So they can teleport too? Sheesh, the humans just can’t catch a break…

            • BlackBriar says:

They’re there to create despair and they’re doing a damn good job at it.

  3. Liza says:

….Where in the world did Colossal Titan pop out from? 0_o Seriously. There better be a good explanation for that other than he rode the bolt of lightning down from the heavens. And he was just standing there…. He made the hole in the wall and that’s it.(I remember him not doing anything last time too…)

I really did like how the first half of this episode was a breather and gave us a bunch of funny moments but then took a dramatic turn.

Poor Sasha, always being the butt of jokes. Her quick thinking on saving Samuel though was awesome(although he does have an arrow to the foot(lol)) Her expression when she got that meat…she seemed a little TOO excited there…

Also was happy to see Hannes was alive and kicking. Really thought he kicked the bucket back in episode 2.

And Titans want to be wizards now? 0_o Apparition spell?

    • skylion says:

So, the Colossus comes out of the sky from a bolt of lightning, and kicks a bloody hole in the wall; all the while looking like he forgot to put his skin on before hitting the Zeus Express. Then he realizes he forgot to put his Armour on, goes away, and then comes back as the Armoured Giant and does his bull rush thing.

      Sound right?

      • Liza says:

        Yup. Sounds about right.

That’s why he just stands there. He’s trying to remember what he forgot to do.

        • skylion says:

“Turned of the kettle? Yes. Fed the cat? Yes. Did I leave the bath running? Damn, I can’t remember. I’m sure I shut the water off, but now I think of it, I can’t say for sure…..Did I leave my Armoured Form behind. Oh silly me. Yes, I did. Well ain’t that just peachy…I swear, forget me own skin next…..”

  4. skylion says:

re: The Samuel Save. This actually has precedence in fiction! It’s actually reversed thou. See the film Serenity, the feature film based on the Firefly television program.

It’s a hover craft vs. hover craft chase scene with guns blazing. The pursuing craft fires a harpoon and line and it hits a character much like Sasha’s poon hit’s Samuel. Said character nearly gets pulled off, but hangs on for dear life until he gets cut loose during the pursuit. For the next few scenes he hobbles around….just a bit thou, and for the rest of the film (like more than an hour) he’s fine as peach fuzz.

    • Ceyrai says:

On the one hand, Sasha is awesome and should be awarded. Or crowned. Or something.

On the other hand, if this was real life, the save would’ve killed Samuel as much as the fall. If not the sharp metal thing through the leg that would’ve wreaked havoc on his muscles and bones (possibly inducing shock, among other things), then the whiplash from the tug of the wire would’ve snapped his neck. I’m not much of a comic book fan but I remember reading on the physics of how Gwen Stacy died.

Still, I’d like to try that running-down-the-wall thing Sasha did next time I go rappelling. Looks really cool.

      • skylion says:

I’ve done rappelling. I will go steady and sure. It’s rather exciting enough, yes? But then, I’m old and me bones are squawking at me something heavy these days…

        • skylion says:

On Sasah’s Birthday (and we all know otaku will celebrate that) we should all find a place where we need to eat a roasted potato on the sly….

          • Ceyrai says:

Bonus points if you eat the roasted potato in front of authority at the absolute wrong time.

            • skylion says:

I work, part time, for an Irish Pub, you better bet I am going to take up the banner for this challenge.

            • Overcooled says:

Report back on what happens if you actually do it, skylion!

            • skylion says:

I scarfed some chips right in front of our COO. But he was rather busy pressure washing our patio, so I think this is a no win…

      • Irenesharda says:

I thought of that, poor Samuel. Even if he survives, I don’t think that leg will ever be the same. He won’t be able to stay in the military at all with a wound like that, much less the Recon Corps.

  5. Ceyrai says:

I’m actually proud of Eren this episode. Sure, he still likes to talk down on people and he preaches the same thing over and over again, but somehow, he’s gotten through some people, even Connie whom I thought was kind of a jerk. Plus he was the first one to snap out of stupor when the Colossal Titan peek-a-boo’d over the wall. He does have the traumatic privilege of having met it once before, but I’m glad he used that to take charge.

Annie (and Eren) do raise a fine point: why are the best graduates almost encouraged to get into the MP? I mean, I’m sure there are noble ideals in protecting the King’s peace, and all, but as Annie said, their anti-personnel skills aren’t even a basis of their grades. Almost smells like a conspiracy.

In any case: POTATO GIRL. I loved that absolute confidence that they’ll get back their lands (if only in the name of Meat) even if you know, the whole encouraging feel of the scene was completely ruined by the Colossal Titan. And her action scene! Gah, the best. Still, I’m not sure if that was the best way to save Samuel – the arrow could easily just get pulled out due to his weight. Not to mention the whiplash from the recoil that could break his neck. Ah well. If engineers can turn a blind eye to the 3D gear tech for the sake of the plot, I can turn a blind eye to that.

Anyway. Colossal Titan. That was fucking scary. I thought that Eren was just having those daydream things when it appeared. It was wayyy too sudden. Just when we were getting some hope, the show just screws us over again. Well, can’t wait for the next ep. There’s currently a betting pool in the house on who’ll die in the next episode, so it should be fun (and depressing).

    • skylion says:

but I’m glad he used that to take charge.

Aw, yeah. Big Damn Hero moment where all of the fandom was quite behind him. I felt pissed that they left off at that moment…

Ah well. If engineers can turn a blind eye to the 3D gear tech for the sake of the plot, I can turn a blind eye to that.

I’m actually going to have me Dad take a look at this show. Being a retired machine engineer and a lover of history it should be up his alley. I got him to enjoy HanaIro, so this show might be up his 75 year old alley. I kinda know what he might say, but it will be cool to hear him weigh in on the engineering aspects.

      • Ceyrai says:

If you do get around to doing that, show him
this and this. I’m not very engineer-minded but I think it’s interesting the author took the time to not completely explain it away with “future tech” or “magic”. Some details are handwaved, but at least some realism was invoked. (But that could be just my easily impressed non-engineer self talking.)

        • Overcooled says:

At least they tried to use some logic for designing that crazy thing. I doubt it would be as effective in real life, but it sure is fun to watch…

        • skylion says:

He would probably balk at the “done in secret” stuff. I know him well enough that he wouldn’t say one thing or another without proper details. He’s not a fan of sci-fi or fantasy. I would say we are as different as night and day, but since I have an interest in science and history myself, I would say we more like dusk and night, or dawn and day…

        • Highway says:

Honestly, I wasn’t really impressed by any engineering background in the drawings. It’s basically “this part and this part and this part, and everything inside is a secret!” It seemed to indicate that the winding is powered by pneumatic power, but you wouldn’t use an open fan for that, you’d use something that can hold pressure (see a car turbocharger or a hydroelectric turbine).

I think it’s fine that the show’s not focusing any time on them, although it is a somewhat out of place bit of engineering in a pre-industrial world.

      • Irenesharda says:

I would think that those 3D rappelling boxes would kill people with how they’re being yanked all over the place. Plus there’s always problems such as if one line anchor doesn’t let go when its supposed to, or if it does too soon. Also, what if the one of the lines break? And how do they make sure the anchor even hits the tree when it supposed to? What if it misses?

Spider-man can do it because he’s a superhero and he has super resilience and strength to get yanked all over the place, plus his spider sense give him the ability to know where to shoot his webbing almost without looking. I doubt these guys have any of that.

But, then again, it does look cool, so I guess they can ignore the logic of it.

        • Ceyrai says:

That’s what the 2 years of training were for? Or the trainees have something in their bread that makes develop the Shingeki no Kyojin equivalent of spidey sense?

Or simply, Rule of Cool. Probably the best theory we’ve got for that.

      • skylion says:

So, did the rather odd thing off introducing my father to a thing not at all in his wheelhouse. TL:DR. Improbable. He was especially critical of the gas exchange citing no matter what gas was used, having it open, as HWY cited is not only impractical, but unfeasible.

  6. Karakuri says:

…I’m still back at like, episode 3, but I saw this and felt the need to share.

    • skylion says:

      I can’t. I don’t. What? Eh? alkja;dslkjf;laskj;lkasdfas;lkj;lkasjd;lk;lkasd;lkfjlkdfjsa;lkdjfasld;kfjsdlklkdsflksjdlfkjdsa…….

::We must apologize for the incovienice, but the Skylion Netork has shut down for routine repairs. We expect normal service to resume shortly.”

    • Liza says:

BAHHH! XD That is perfect. Rude Eren rude. I know you don’t want to listen but you don’t need to attack the guy!

    • BlackBriar says:

I guess he’s trying to say he’s there to arrange the meetings. There’s got to be a better messenger somewhere!

      • skylion says:

That reminds me of the time I saw the Watchtower group approached my house and I answered the door naked….

      • Liza says:

He is probably the best they have! See? Titans are just misunderstood. All they want to do is talk.

        • BlackBriar says:

They may look misunderstood on the surface but in the end, they’re bad to the bone.

    • Ceyrai says:

Oh #$(!@#!@. I do NOT want to know my Lord and Savior in such a manner.

      • BlackBriar says:

That’s probably the manner you’re going to get if you’ve been bad. Then a lot of people must have been really bad.

  7. BlackBriar says:

It’s a traditional zero to hero sequence for Eren and he’s doing very well. I’m glad he didn’t turn out to be weak on a physical level and he’s strong to a certain degree on the psychological. A bit of SAO’s Kirito mixed in with the usual Yuki Kaji character stereotype. One I might actually live with this time because I can’t say there was a Yuki Kaji role with this similarity that I liked.

Obviously the Titans are intimidating but that doesn’t mean the humans aren’t either. Seeing Annie with her stone cold attitude is nothing to sniff at and she’s methodical in combat. Hey, OC! Based on your description, you’re a third degree black belt. Do you think you could take her on if you were there? I say you can but not with coming out unscathed. She’s right about the serious contradiction. What’s the point of training for something you’re eventually not going to do? It’s as much as lying to yourself as it is to everyone else.

More Sasha the Potato Girl! She’s becoming a huge reason why I’m watching this show and if she keeps it up then she secures a vote from me for best female supporting character at the end of year. I know the Japanese tend to pervert most everyday things on a regular basis but who actually gets turned on by the thought of meat? The girl was drooling. It’s a total riot!

That ending was a trojan horse and a reality check to all the peaceful training and graduation celebrations earlier. Moreover, a huge slap to the face. And how did that Colossal Titan get there so fast? I’d say he learned Goku’s Instant Transmission technique but that’s absurd and he’s too big to be sneaking around because someone would have noticed him a mile away. An explanation is demanded here post haste!

    • Overcooled says:

Oh no, don’t mention the dreaded K-word….I don’t want to think about him anymore u_u

Haha, could I take on Annie? It’s hard to say. As long as she doesn’t have one of those cable-boxes to jump around, I would stand a chance since I’ve done the sweeping techniques she does on Eren. But she’s super fierce and I think military training would trump even my harsh dojo training, to be honest u_u B..but..I don’t wanna lose!

I don’t get why the top 10 would be sent to the inner city either. Wouldn’t you want the strongest ones out in the field attacking the Titans? I know space is limited, but that’s still a bit of a weird way to do things.

      • Highway says:

If you’re the leader, do you want your best fighters out there, in the big wide world, leaving you with the not-best fighters to protect you?

        No, of course you don’t.

So you give them the incentive: the life of plenty in the inner city, and you get the protection of having the best fighters to protect you personally should anything happen. They don’t care about ‘taking back the land’ or ‘eradicating the titans’. It goes back to what Eren was saying in the first episode: They’ve given up. They’re always going to live inside the walls. They don’t care about the rest of the world. So make themselves as safe as possible, even if it means more danger for the rest of the population.

But we already know that those people don’t matter. “Hey, all you guys who got displaced: go try to take your land back.”

  8. Irenesharda says:

    “This is the moment –
    My final test –
“Destiny beckoned, I never reckoned “Second Best”!

I won’t look down, I must not fall!
This is the moment, The sweetest moment of them all!

This is the moment! Damn all the odds!
This day, or never, I’ll sit forever with the gods!

When I look back I will always recall, moment for moment-
This was the moment…the greatest moment, of them all!”
    -Henry Jekyll, Jekyll & Hyde

Nice Naruto allusion! This episode was back in form for me as I was really glad that not only have all supporting characters been introduced and everything, but that the training was also coming to an end. I don’t really like long amounts of training episodes (one of the reasons I eventually dropped Naruto) so I was happy that they kept it short. The years seem to fly by and it’s already been five years since episode one. How old are Eren and friends now? 15? I don’t really know, but they seem to have grown up to be pretty mature teenagers and have be diligently training to join the armed forces.

Honestly, I’m not surprised Eren got higher than Armin. Armin is not only more academically inclined (which for some reason usually goes hand-in-hand with slight physical ineptness…) but he doesn’t and never has had the same drive as Eren. Eren had more drive than Armin even before the whole Wall Maria incident, rushing to fight off bullies despite being weaker, fighting with his fists, whereas Armin would fight with words.

I like Eren as a character, he’s growing as a character and seems to have matured since episode 1. And yet, he’s really not a full adult yet either, so that’s why he’s still so abrasive with people he feels have the wrong POV. However, I’m sure he will grow as the show goes on. I also notice that he seems to have a hesitance around knives, and there was a split-second flashback, so I’m sure there’s a story around that somewhere.

Was not surprised Mikasa was number one though, she seems like one of those who just happen to be good at everything…

The scene when the Titan showed up was one of the most surprising, mood whiplashing, what-the-crap moments I’ve ever seen! One minute Eren is monologuing to himself about how he’s made it and that they now have a chance, which is usually something you’d see at the very end of the episode right before the freeze-frame image, but then–

Lightning strikes and that thing is just…THERE! It actually took me a moment to realize that that the Titan was actually there and not some figment of their imagination or a phantom image alluding to what’s out there. No, that thing was real, it came literally out of nowhere (How does it do that? Can it travel by lightning? And if so, why doesn’t it just appear inside the city itself?), and it has now made a hole in the second wall!

And yet, this is the moment that Eren has been waiting for. This is what he’s sacrificed and trained for. He wants to face the Titans and he doesn’t care about the odds against them. But now that he has his chance, how will he handle it?

However, I do think that before they try to kill the Titans, they should work on trying to evacuate the city and fortifying the inner wall so that the second wall doesn’t get compromised like the first.

I mean, at the rate these walls are coming down, the humans will have no place to go halfway through the series, and then what’ll they do?

I cannot wait to see what comes next in the battle to come and I have a feeling that all of those just graduated trainees that never got a mention by the drill sergeant in the beginning and had little to no screen time, have major death flags in the next episode. I don’t think Armin is going to bite the dust yet, especially if they said it “might” happen in the preview. I think what is more probable is that another trainee might sacrifice his life for Armin or something of that nature.

All in all, I really liked this episode and I am ready for the next one. So Bring on the Titans!

    I give this one a 9/10.

THERE! It actually took me a moment to realize that that the Titan was actually there and not some figment of their imagination or a phantom image alluding to what’s out there.

Damn, Irine. You take the biscuit here.

I get the feeling most people don’t share my love for training montages and training arcs. Things are moving fast, but I understand why they want to hurry and get all these kids into the Recon corps.

I really did not expect the Titan in the slightest but then…bam! There it was. I almost wish I had waited to watch it with my boyfriend so we could cry out in surprise at the same time. It’s more fun that way. Anyways, I digress. It took me a while to realize it was happening too, especially since it didn’t look like it was real. I loved that scene so much.

I really don’t know if the humans have the power to make walls strong enough to keep the Colossal Titan from busting giant holes in it. They can repair them to keep the little ones out, but it will never stop them completely. They’d only be safe if they could kill the Colossal Titan before he destroys everything.

I think Armin might make it too. The fact that they specifically say “Armin might die!” makes me suspicious that he won’t die…because why would you just spoil something like that in the preview? Ahh, this series just gets better and better. I made good choices for blogging this season!
