Hey You! No talking in the library!

Hello everyone for another update on Haiyore! Nyarlko-san W! Where does the Crawling Chaos take us this week? The library! Can Nyarlko manage to not get shushed into oblivion?

Hooray! More Haiyore! Nyaruko-san on Metanorn and once again I am tagging with Highway to bring you all the hilarious fun and hilarious references of course.

A Dangerous Quest for Knowledge

 Highway // That’s right, this week’s location for half the show is the library. The Great Library of Celaeno! And of course, since it’s Nyarlko, the reason is because she forgot to return a book. That warrants a 480 light year trip, for sure. There are various side gags, including Kuuko getting into the 18+ section, a doujin market featuring Tsuruko from last ep, and Mahiro trying to get Hastur to search for info on Nyarlko and Kuuko’s age, which gets both Mahiro and Hastur in big trouble. Mahiro should really take Kuuko’s advice to heart: “If you want to live a long life, you must understand that some things are better left unknown.” Especially with the age of women.

But the real points of the trip to the library are to learn some about Hastur and to set up a story arc. Hastur used to work at the library, and is enjoying showing it off to Mahiro about it. And Nyarlko and Kuuko let on that Hastur’s probably stronger than they are at fighting, as when they were in school, the only person who could break up their fights was Hastur, the class rep. They’re really setting Hastur up as a goody-goody, aren’t they? That’s not all the attention Hastur gets this episode, either, as the next morning he gets Mahiro to brush out his long hair, but I don’t know if that gets Hastur the progress with Mahiro that he wants, since he sees him more as a little brother. The only one Hastur makes progress with is Shanta, who has a pretty over the top reaction to scratching. I don’t think that’s quite what Hastur was going for, tho.

Foshizzel // After watching this episode I have to be honest with you I did not recognize a lot of the references while watching this episode even though I did look at the other blogs just to see what I might have missed originally, but I think most of them focused on the whole lovecraft Cthulhu Mythos and of course Kamen Rider. That said, there were plenty of other anime references that caught my eye, like the parody of Evil god’s Memo Pad aka Kami-sama no Memo Chou? That was interesting and I thought I read something about Mahiro getting “book sick” which might be a poke at Gosick? I mean that staircase in the massive library did remind me of that series! I was quite shocked that they didn’t pull anything from Index? That would have worked well. Rounding off the final reference with a line from Kuuko that she said when Mahiro was buying food for everyone “Our trouble is always darkness” which obviously a reference to the popular ecchi series To Love Ru Darkness! Aside from those few I couldn’t really find a lot of them, but feel free to let me know of anything I might have missed.

Highway // The story arc mentioned starts at the library, where two guys wipe out the Library Defense Force, and then proceed to make Nyarlko and Kuuko look like fools. Hastur manages to protect Mahiro until reinforcements come, but the guys who were ransacking the library, looking for something in the prohibited book vault. And without finding much more information about them, the story looks like it will continue next week with the same guys showing up in Myanmar, now in Nyarlko and Kuuko’s area of responsibility. Can they actually fight them effectively this time? Or will they get beaten again?

This was a very entertaining episode for me this week, but at the same time not so entertaining? I mean sure we got some story with Nyaruko and friends visiting that massive space library, so that took up roughly the entire “plot” of the week; however it was fun to watch Kuuko explore the adult section of the library! Wow such detail and what was going on with Shanta-kun and Hastur this time? It seemed like those two were bounding quite well until it got a little too excited while Hastur was petting him? Yeah that was a bit random even for this series, but I can tell they are just setting up a short story arc instead of straight up laughs and anime references.

Not necessarily the most action-packed episode of Nyarlko, but usually the library isn’t where you’ll find any action, so that they had even a fight at all was unexpected. Of course a library with its own defense force is the place for that. As Fosh said, it was definitely more of a setup episode, and hopefully we’ll get more of a bounce back next week as they wrap up the story. Learning more about Hastur was fun, but maybe sometime we’ll get to see him crack some skulls and show off how powerful he is.
