First Impressions – Ginga Kikoutai Majestic Prince

Time for Gundam SEED season three err I mean Majestic Prince…

Welcome to Ginga Kikoutai Majestic Prince episode one on Metanorn! So are you excited for this series? I am not sure how I feel about this because I just don’t like the Gundam SEED/Destiny character designs when they are used for a somewhat comedic series, but anyway this might be my second series I do for video reviews for the spring anime season.

Fun with space

About

Is huge anime fan from Florida! who loves to watch anime and also enjoys drawing and collecting pictures, my favorite genre of anime has to be Mecha, there is just something awesome about giant robots beating the crap out of each other! Other than that type of show, I love a good comedy or action series :D

First off, I am a mecha fangirl. Gundam is my thing and I love space epics. This is the first of 3 major mecha shows this season and after watching it…it has slipped to bottom of the ranking with simply the first episode.

Okay, after finishing the whole episode, I have to say that while it has some promising factors: animation, music, cgi. etc. The writing and plot is stale and boring. We have generic alien villains, generic military, generic special forces…its all looking like one big generic fest!

All the characters look and act like 50 cent versions of their Gundam counterparts. We even have our 35 cent Char clone who’s commanding the main ship (at least he’s seems interesting.)
The main team seems to be made up of cliches: the brainy one, the dumb girl, the emo one…sigh.
Even the MC is a boring photocopy of your worst Gundam leads. He’s like a mix of Shinn and Uso. In fact, he’s even worse, in that at least you know a Gundam lead is going to be the lead when you first see him, the same with almost any anime series.

Honestly, I didn’t even notice the MC until they announced him as leader in the middle of the episode!

Also, unlike other mecha shows, there is really nothing special about the main team, in fact they are totally incompetent and don’t even have good teamwork. In a real war situation they would already have gotten themselves, each other, AND their charges killed. The ending was idiotic and forced, why in the heck would these 5 idiots be able to stop the enemy when the ENTIRE military force wasn’t able to? And also, those people they were trying to save on the base, did any of them even appear to be in danger? They were simply strolling along as if this was just another day in the park. That’s just lazy, animators!

The battles were okay, nothing special. I actually thought the main ship’s crew more interesting than the 5 idiots (yes, I’m going to keep calling them that). I’ll watch another episode or two, but this show is really close to being dropped. 2.5/10 for me.

For a moment I thought you were talking about the rapper, and I was so confused he had to do with mecha :facepalm @ me

The designs remind me of Gundam Age, which I touched for all of one episode. Suruga Ataru (the weapon otaku) reminds me of a chibi-fied version of Lockon Stratos.

    • Foshizzel says:

Oh? That is awesome! Hooray for mecha fans and yepp Gundam is always fun to watch and I can’t wait for Gargantia which aired tonight and Valvrave, but Date A Live is also considered mecha or did you pass on that because of the harem vibes? I would also place Majestic prince at the bottom of my mecha list as well…

Ahahaha yes this is very simple and basic mecha plotline heroes that fight aliens with super robots~

Oh god yes the character designs are so damn bad! I mean SURE they are trying something new by adding the goofy ass expressions, but at the same time it just doesn’t work. Yeah sadly Tamaki is around for two reasons to provide some random laughs and become mindless fanservice for the camera…yeah the MC was easy to guess xD

Will he become the best leader? Probably! I hope he doesn’t fall into depression or anger like many other leaders in any mecha series.

True I feel the same they really didn’t show me how “special” they were, but I suspect we will discover more about them soon since we have 24 episodes to work through and yeah 5 idiots save the day was dumb hahh

Nope the 5 idiots works xD

Date A Live isn’t my thing, I could tell that by just looking at it. It’s too moe for me, so I left it off my list.

Honestly, I thought the character designs for Gundam Seed which is about 6 or 7 years old now, was actually better than what they came up for here. At least there, I actually saw their noses. -_-

I fear that they turned to the same cliche where the MC declares that he wants to be a hero, only to find out from the school of hard knocks, that no real hero starts out wanting to be one, and that being a real hero is harder than it appears. I fear some real humbling situations are in store for our MC.

        • Foshizzel says:

Yeah in the end Date A live will be harem fodder after they get through all the fighting elements.

I know right? I thought the same thing! I guess adding the funny expressions threw everything out the window? Ahahah th noses YES WTF is up with that? xD

Agreed I bet he struggles with that and I wouldn’t be surprised if the blue idiot steps up as the true hero of the series, but who knows maybe it will be refreshing to see a MC actually struggle for once? Just kidding! I feel Majestic Prince is for the 12-16 year old crowd while Valrave and Gargantia is for 18-20’s because they don’t appear to be all about FRIENDSHIP and teamwork hahah

I just finished Gargantia and damn it kicks Majestic to the side in terms of EVERYTHING! Review of that coming soon <3

…an evacuation is HURRY UP AND WAIT….not wait and hurry up. Didn’t feel the least bit of tension for them folks. Pretty much a paint by numbers episode. I rather like the rag tag, lovable loser approach, however.

    • Foshizzel says:

They were alright as a team they just butt heads a lot at the start, but in the middle they kind of sorta worked better together? Since we have 24 episodes I can’t see them all becoming best friends that fast.

They are fun to watch so I will try to follow this series for blogging, but we shall see how long I survive xD

      • skylion says:

Most of the storytelling elements are kinda bland. But as I said, I really do like this lovable band of losers. The ease that they defeated the enemy makes me hope that they might have to take a step back and get smacked around later. I think this program is about the character more than anything, and that is pretty good so far…

        • Foshizzel says:

Yeah this series looks like it will be more about friendship and mechas vs aliens! YES! I dunno how long I will keep up with it, but I saw Gargantia and loved it xD

I’m not a mecha fan, although there have been a few shows I’ve liked, so this didn’t do much for me. I thought the opening space battle looked good and I did get a few laughs out of the episode, so I’ll stick around for at least one more. But it was just one cliche after another and I fear that’s what it’ll always be.

    • Foshizzel says:

Majestic prince will take awhile to get into as well because the designs are not working for me, but I am willing to give it a shot of three more episodes xD

  4. Liza says:

The one thing that surprised me was the fact that there were TWO girls in the main group. 0_0 I was actually pretty shocked about that. I guess from the title about it being about “princes” I guess I expected all guys.

I loved the mecha designs and how every single mecha has a different function and everyone had a distinct role to play.

I know I will probably be turning off my brain while watching though because the way the five act…they are a bunch of idiots. -_-

    • Irenesharda says:

Interesting that you bring up the “2 girls” thing. When I went on Majestic Prince’s tvtrope page, I found out that having two girls on the team is actually a trope in and of itself. Look at this.

The thing is, now that I think about it, there quite a few shows that do that: Power Rangers being one of the most infamous, Digimon Season 1 is another.

    • Foshizzel says:

Ooooh yes this is common in a lot of team shows! The only one I have seen this changed in is like Robotic;notes? In that we have 3 girls and 2 guys? I guess it is a easy formula xD

Designs are cool and yes! Each machine has a certain job and I can’t wait to see how that works even though I know the red dude will be doing most of the work while blue tries his best.

YEPPPPPPP! That is probably some great advice! the five idiots are dumb…

      • Liza says:

Oh I know about that trope! I think I went in expecting it to be about a band of 5 guys(because obviously I do not pay attention to the promo art…).

        • Foshizzel says:

Ahahahah no problem! I am curious to see how they work as a team later on, but I have a feeling I will drop this soon…we shall see xD

  5. skylion says:

Over on G+, I likened this band of fools to the character from a classic Bill Murray/Harold Ramis film STRIPES. Do a youtube search for that, tell me if I am high, or not…

  6. BlackBriar says:

It looks like a decent show to kill some time to tell the truth but the character designs look really outdated. Maybe their going for a retro look in mecha this time? Anyway, it’s on my list but not my “must watch” kind and there’s enough time to cover it since I heard it’s 24 episodes long.

    • Irenesharda says:

LOL, I don’t know about “retro”, Gundam Seed wasn’t that long ago was it? (Man, I’m getting old. T_T)

When I think retro designs, I think “Yamato 2199”.

  7. skylion says:

Oh, yeah, moar Sawashiro sexy from Rin.
