Oda Nobuna no Yabou – 07

That rose you’re holding only serves to make you more evil, Asakura Yoshikage

Magus_Killer is back with another episode of Oda Nobuna no Yabou! Readers, sorry for the late post, academic work piled up on my desk during the long weekend and I had to deal with it until a while ago. Now that the action-packed Mino arc is over, Nobuna decides to march on Kyoto, but not everything is going as planned in the Imperial Capital…

Episode 7: “Nobuna advances on Kyoto”

I’m in despair! The fact that the future changed has left me in despair!

I’ve always thought there would come a time when Saru’s knowledge of future events will not help him in furthering Nobuna’s cause. I also thought it would occur on the battlefield like his close call at Sunomata Castle. Fortunately, it didn’t mean that Saru would be rendered useless in this episode.

New loli chara #1: Himiko-sama (she gets kidnapped a lot)

While Nobuna and the rest of the Oda clan armies are fighting towards the Imperial Capital to install Imagawa Yoshimoto as Shogun, Saru saved two new lolis (Bontenmaru a.k.a. Date Masamune and Himiko) and a busty European nun while on a scouting mission. Teach me, master!

War Is Hell

“Hikisaita yami ga hoe furueru teito ni…” – Sakura Taisen

While the show has been avoiding showing the effects of war on the non-combatants for six episodes, this time we got a glimpse of what war does to a society. It gets worse, as a Five Bad Band led by evil playboy Daimyo Asakura Yoshikage with an evil sixth ranger (Saito Yoshitatsu, he is a CHAR!) seems to have evil plans for Japan.

Matsunaga “Danjo” Hisahide – “witch” of the Sengoku Period. She rides elephants. 0_0

Story-wise however, this might actually be a good thing, since the quality of the antagonists aren’t enough to oppose Nobuna for more than a single episode. With the introduction of a group of villains that could match the Oda clan on and off the field of battle, this will force Nobuna and Saru to become even more awesome than they already are.

Oda Nobuna is a troll

To quote my good friend Admiral Ackbar: IT’S A TRAP!

Shortly after last week’s episode, I ceased to look at Azai Nagamasa as a serious contender – whether the subject is the conquest of Japan, or even something comparatively mundane like finding a suitable wife. The poor guy can’t catch a break; his street cred has been shot to pieces.

Case in point, he has failed twice to win Nobuna’s hand in marriage, he failed to take advantage of the chaos that ensued after the siege of Inabayama Castle – and now, he got suckered into an alliance by marrying “Oichi” (actually Nobukatsu/Nobusumi dragged into drag *laughs*).

Saru, you’re not going back to your time period soon, so why not just wait until she becomes legal?

Saru is the next one to be outwitted by Nobuna. Remember his demand for “the prettiest girl in Japan” in the previous episode? He demanded it, and he got it, sort of. His “imagine spots” (Yoshimoto-chan! HNNNGGGHHH) remind me of Ayumu from KoreWaZom. Even though genre-savvy watchers would have guessed that it would be Nene that Nobuna would send to Saru, it was still funny.

Final Thoughts

I actually think Azai Nagamasa is actually a woman underneath all that bishounen playboy personality he exudes, and the “marriage” to Nobukatsu might have been a good thing. Trap x Reverse Trap, anyone? Will they find true love? I hope so. D’awwww.

New loli-chara #2: Bontenmaru a.k.a. Date Masamune (are those pumpkin panties?)

While some find the abundance of lolis as fanservice, I think it might be actually be deconstruction of the role of loli characters. Last time it was averted since Goemon survived the shot meant for Saru, but I don’t think plot armor will always be there for the cute little girls. If the wars for Japan’s unification are such that armies have little girls in them, it must be that things are escalating to the point where girls like Goemon and Inuchiyo have to take up arms.

Preview:

Oda Nobuna no Takoyaki

Next week on Oda Nobuna no Yabou, it seems the next episode will be an epic cooking match, with Saru and Goemon on one side, and Mitsuhide and Inuchiyo on the other side. Will Saru become a cooking master boy? How will the invention of Takoyaki during the Sengoku Period change the history of Japan? What is Nobuna doing in a Kimono? Find out in the next episode, “Golden Free City: Sakai”.

Yeah, Nobunokatsu + Asai is a perfect match.

I’m enjoying this show more and more, but they still make it hard with a bazillion new characters. People were talking in the last article about Horizon having a zillion characters, I don’t know if Oda Nobuna gives it a run for its money or not, but there’s so many people to keep track of.

Horizon has a lot of characters. A lot. But it’s still a very enjoyable show, if you don’t find flipping through blog (like Kyoukai Senjou no Horizon Infodump) for more info from the novels and etc. I find that part interesting, finding out little tidbits I didn’t pick up the first time watching.

I wouldn’t say Oda Nobuna has a lot of characters, or rather, it doesn’t have a lot of characters you need to know. Most of the villains have been, as Magus_Killer stated, stayed around for one or two episodes that you don’t really need to know who they are besides enemy a and b.

  2. Zaphan says:

Seriously why are almost all the chicks in Saru’s harem loli’s?

    • BlackBriar says:

I guess it’s to test out whether or not he’ll fall for one of them…. and probably be rejected.

  3. skylion says:

Damn it, stop complaining or they’ll take ’em away…..(lol).

Two Lolis in One Episode. There is a the Conservation of Ninjitsu. It clearly states that there is only so much ninja power to go around. So, one ninja versus another ninja is an epic fight, one vs 100 and the superior numbers equal cannon fodder.

There is no such Conservation of Loli….the growth is exponential until it triumphs versus all. This is as is should be. This is the natural order of things.

Loli Date appearance just left one wanting for more. Not since the lolification of a certain witch from Soul Eater has Pumpkin Pantsu been so darling.

Odd thing: The man that Saru “replaces”? In our history he was dead set against missionaries by the time the Shogunate came into full power….More despair for the Monkey?

And yes, Reverse x Trap FTW!

Odd thing II: History rights itself as the man Saru “replaces” does eventually marry Nene….

      Oh skylion you.

This is a very valid point, and it dovetails into the idea I had about the role of genderswapping in storytelling. That it matters not the gender, any one person can be there in the tide of history taking important actions. With the loli characters it comes around the matter of age.

But, I suspect that plot armor will play a valid role.

  6. Highway says:

Hey, I specifically didn’t complain about the lolis (at least here…). I figure at this point, we just need to accept that for 1/2 of all girl characters introduced are going to be lolis. That’s pretty much the ratio we’re on right now. Besides, if they keep sending Saru, Goemon, Inuchiyu, and Hanbei-chan places, I can keep making “Monkey-Loli Force” jokes. 🙂

I guess I’m not genre-savvy, I was half-expecting Nobuna to come in for tea. That or send Dousan. Haha.

Wiki is failing me though, why is Bontenmaru = Date? Date’s wiki page has no reference to Bontenmaru (whoever that is supposed to be).

And Saru needs to make Nobusumi his disciple… then his harem will double (or maybe triple, I don’t know how large Nobusumi’s harem is at this point)!

    • skylion says:

Bontenmaru was a childhood nickname for Date. Savour the irony….maru is term of endearment for a little boy..

  8. BlackBriar says:

Sagara doesn’t know what he wants. He does tasks for Nobuna’s sake in exchange for the prettiest girl in Japan then there are times he swoons over her showing that he wants her for himself but now he suddenly shoots all of those down the minute he sees a European nun? So indecisive.

It’s amazing how many lolis are being put into this series. It’s like Sagara has his own personal army and each loli has a different output. I imagine Goemon is stealth and recon, Hanbei is stategy, Inuchiyo is defense, Botenmaru is attack and maybe Himiko as magic?

Looks like Nobuna will have an enemy capable of overthrowing her whole plan. The assortment of enemies here wanting to crush is almost intimidating. Almost. But I wouldn’t put much faith in Matsunaga “Danjo” Hisahide. She has the face of someone who’d turn on you in a heartbeat and for the simplest of things.

    • Highway says:

I kind of wish Sagara would stay focused on Nobuna as well. He’s wanted to be with her since the beginning of the show, but I kind of got the impression that he thinks he’s unworthy of her, yet he continually talks to her as an equal. That part of the show is a little too incoherent.
