Mirai Nikki – 25 & 26 [END]

And here it is; The End of Mirai Nikki. It’s been a long 26 weeks with the lovable stalker and her virginal knee-sock wearing sidekick. Remember when Yuki used to be such a pussy all he would do is get kidnapped and cry? Oh ho ho. Good times. And here he is in episode 26 getting kidnapped and..uh, crying…Tell me how this guy survived an interdimentional battle royale again?!

So, with Yuno still in possession of Yuki’s diary she’s able to track his movements. She’s also able to see how he is feeling, this comprises her as she’s already decided to kill him and thus (in her twisted mind) save him. Just as Yuno is about to leave her Father rushes in, seemingly concerned. Yuno immediately stabs him. Ninth drops Yuki and the 3rd Yuno off and his diary predicts Yuno will catch them, which she does. Yuki faces off against her as she slashes away ruthlessly at him. He fairs pretty well, dodging her slashes and avoiding Murmur.

He gets injured by Murmur and Yuno reads it all on her diary and experiences her conflicted feelings about it again. Yuki runs at her and she throws her knife, but it only skims him. Ninth also drop kicks Murmur. Awesome. As Yuki is seemingly crushed under Murmur’s sphere we see all the previous diary owners of this world take in the explosions if the school.

Suddenly Yuki wakes up in his home, and Yuno tells him she’s created a perfect dream for him. He tries to say her name but finds he can’t, as where he is isn’t a world where she exists. Yuno attempts to say goodbye, finding she can’t kill him this time. So she’s just going to lock him in the sphere and find the Yuki of the 3rd world. Yuno tells Yuki that he would have loved anyone had they protected him, and that she would have loved anyone were she dependent on them. Then the girl Yuki got the love note from appears and offers herself to him. He refuses but she just undressed and advances on him. The sphere begins to close and Yuno bids farewell, leaving Yuki to get…uh…raped, I guess?

Ninth appears having whipped Murmur’s ass, and challenges Yuno. As she runs for the first strike Yuno releases Murmur, who goes all Judge Doom on us and utterly slaughters Ninth. Yuki’s indulging his fake patents in his perfect illusion as the two continue to battle it out outside.

When Ninth is defeated Murmur goes back to normal and it’s up to Yuno to kill her 3rd world self. She wakes up and Yuno tells her about all the things that are going to happen. 3rd world Yuno tells her she isn’t suffering though, and how she loves both her patents and believes they will come around. Present-Yuno wonders when she became so twisted.

Meanwhile, Yuki is waking up from his prison as the cops arrive at the school and Yuno’s Dad appears. It’s all happening! Everyone’s future is changing…for the better. Yuno finally works up the courage to stab herself but her dad blocks her attack. Her mother also comes in and the two comfort 3rd world Yuno. Present Yuno admits her jealously and vows to kill herself and her parents, just as Yuki is breaking through his dreamworld. Fourth, who arrived with the cops, fires as Yuno starts towards her alternate family, which Murmur blocks. Wait…not OUR Murmur, the Murmur from the second world…wow, okay.

Yuki embraces Yuno and she can’t believe he chose her over his dream world. He asks her to kill him again and instead she stabs herself. Yuno and Yuki share one last kiss before she dies and Yuki is crowned victor and spirited away with 2nd world Murmur.

Cue epilogue! Bizzarly, Ninth and the rookie Cop shack up in this world and even have …BABIES. Fourth son that looks like a daughter also survived thanks to Ninth’s advice. Ai and Marco are pregnant. Shota boy is cute not evil. Everyone is all set. Even…..SQUUEE!!!!! Akise is alive!!!!!! Yay!!!! Yuno has friends, is getting on with her family and …Yuki is dating that chick with the glasses. Well…the Yuki of THAT world. OUR Yuki has decided to grow his hair out…over the past 10,000 years. God is a tough stick, and consists of mainly floating about in a purple galaxy in despair. Until…

Mirai Nikki is a rare thing. A story of this caliber is a rare thing. Towards the end I was continually impressed with the twists and turns the story would take in order to keep the audience going “what the fuck!”, but these two episodes contained so much more than simple DUN DUN DUN moments. You’d think that by this point there would be no more character development to be had, but oh no, Yuki and Yuno grow so much in these last two episodes. There’s also this incredible emotional charge to everything that goes on. You really buy into what the characters are feeling and genuinly care for them, something that’s hard to achieve in shows like this where everything is usually so ridiculous.

Yuno’s conversation with her 3^rd world self was beautiful and also kind of poingant. I could see where they were going with it, but it’s still cool to be presented with that senario, and it was handled masterfully. What would you do if you were to face yourself when you were younger? Also, another neat thing was how her attitude at the time contrasted how she is now. It was a fun thing for them to play with – that Yuno’s memories of herself retrospectivly are so different to what she feels now. I really enjoyed that little part. I thought it was clever, and more than a little relatable. Sometimes hindsight can cloud things and make you realize missed oppertunities and better perspectives you used to have.

Yuki’s fate was a little dreary and unexpected. I can’t help but feel it was a little odd. I mean, I don’t know what I expected when he became God, but it wasn’t “grow his hair out like an 80s headliner and sit about in a skyjina moping”. The last few seconds were also a tad too ambiguous for my taste, it seemed implausible for the sake of a last minute twist. But it doesn’t detract from how good I thought these last episodes were. It always felt like something big was going on, it had this scale that was mesmerising – aptly like a trainwreck you just can’t look away from. Mirai Nikki has been one helluva ride, and it’s been a pleasure to blog it through all its ups and downs. I’ll be on hiatus for the Spring season, but hopefully I’ll be back in summer if the anime curcuit tosses me anything juicy.
