Haiyore! Nyaruko-san – 02

Nyaruko is crawling her way to the top of awesome characters.

So it seems like Haiyore became a hit with a few readers out there! So you can expect to see more reviews here on Metanorn, but what exactly makes this series so damn fun? The random jokes or maybe it comes down to the crazy cast of unique characters? Or is it possibly something else altogether? Either way I am having a great time with this insane series.

Plot this week has Nyaruko and Mahiro visit Nodens, interrupt an evil auction and meet Cthuko.

Mahiro-“Don’t you have less violent weapons?”        Nyaruko-“Silly human,  fire makes it look cool!”

Our crawling chaos adventure begins with Nyaruko killing off more demons with a special grenade. Yes she has all kinds of special weapons…after blowing them up, Mahiro complains about the demons showing up to attack him. However, he suggests to Nyaruko that they should destroy their main “base” and she agrees to his plan after she freezes time which looked a lot like zero time from Stardriver. After successfully stopping time our brave fighters sneak their way into the headquarters aka R’lyeh Land, which doubles as an amusement park. Oh alright they failed at sneaking and it quickly became something like kicking in the door of the enemy base and shouting WE ARE HERE, BITCHES!

Nyaruko-“One day I will become king of the P-”            Mahiro-“No! Just no…stop that right now!”

Kuko-“Time to burn up the stage with my yuri flames!”              Nyaruko-“Remind me to extinguish my desires to murder you.”

So, how do you stop evil demons from taking over the world? Easy answer! You simply interrupt their auction for world takeover of course, but for Mahiro this is not good because they are lured into a trap by the old Nodens who looks a lot like Zeus. Now that Nodens has Nyaruko are trapped, he sends Cthuko to fight her because they are rivals or are they something else? *cough* yuri lovers *cough* Well, their love is really only one sided. While the girls fight in another world, poor Mahiro is left alone with some nasty demons; however, Nyaruko did give him a magical item just in case he got into some trouble.

Nyaruko-“Let’s settle this somewhere else!”              Kuko-“Ohhh? I think I have the perfect location in mind.”

Nyaruko-“EHHHHHHHHH!? WHAT THE!?”                Kuko-“Shhh it will all be over soon, my sweet.”

Back to Cthuko or Koko as Nyaruko calls her and their “fight” or basically Gundam-references-all-over-the-place, battle quickly ends resulting in Kuko revealing her true side to Nyaruko…as in hot fiery yuri action where she openly confesses her love for Nyaruko wanting to make little demon-alien babies with her. Wait… how in the world!? Or…never mind, I really don’t want to know about that right now. Anyway, Nyaruko tells Koko that she really does love Mahiro and they enter round two of their epic battle, where our grey haired god transforms herself into a superhero! Yeah that was really strange but it helped her win and she arrives just in time to save Mahiro thanks to his magical box.

Kuko why so cute!?

Nyaruko-“IT’S TIME TO TRANSFORM FOR GREAT JUSTICE!!”

Nyaruko-“That was my justice sandwich, I hope you liked it.”                  Kuko-“I…still…love…you.”

Nodens-“Soooo, you won’t star in my epic BL anime?”               Mahiro-“I’d rather have children with Nyaruko.”

Nodens-“ILL GET YOU NEXT TIME, Nyaruko!! And your little Mahiro too!”

After saving Mahiro, the other demons in the arena flee and Nodens tries to walk away; however, Nyaruko stops him and they learn the old man was going to sell Mahiro and place him in some TV series or a boy’s love story. So, they save the world and blow the place up and return to the real world where Nyaruko says her final goodbye to Mahiro, but after that touching moment he heads home only to discover she never left his house! DAMN, YOU GOT TROLLED HARD by the master or did he? After that bit of comedy the episode ends with more forking action between our main characters.

Nyaruko-“You almost said you loved me!”                  Mahiro-“No way! I meant I love your hair…”

Extra love craft action!

Mahiro-“Maybe if I close my eyes she will disappear?”             Nyaruko-“Not a chance in hell, Mahiro! I am here to stay forever.”

Is it worth the risk? You tell me.

Noden just found out he lost the Saimoe tournament.

Romance is in the air! Either that or Nyaruko can summon random pink hearts at will.

Whoa! This was a great episode this week, however if you compared it to the premier episode I would say it wasn’t as funny as the first episode. Story wise they did introduce two new characters with the old man Nodens and the fire chick Cthuko or Kuko, who gave the fans plenty of hot blooded yuri action. Normally I make jokes about yuri because it is just not my thing, but I can’t say I hate it either. As for that yuri scene in this episode I can tell it was more about the laughs for me. Kuko is defiantly an interesting girl and I can see where things might get interesting coming up in future episodes, but damn her character design? Amazing! She looks like a possible sister to Msyu; I guess I will have to add Kuko to my growing list of characters I need to draw in the future.

Speaking of Kuko for a moment how about that CQC battle she had with Nyaruko? Or as I have started to call it “Gundam-battle scene” Funnels and laser beam spam? Where else can you find such things? And I think we had a Stardriver reference with the whole time freeze event and then they jumped right into a random One Piece joke with the whole “I will break into a prison to save my brother.” Oh my god Jrow, you better be watching this series. Now I know Haiyore isn’t the first anime series to have parodies, I mean Gintama did it all the time, but I suppose Nyaruko does read a lot of manga and probably watches a lot of random anime; so I say bring on more parody level comedy.

So I wonder why Nyaruko’s ultimate fighting move transforms her into a power ranger type of superhero; maybe her power allows her to do anything she wants? I am starting to think that Nyaruko can bend reality to her own will. Then again when you have characters like Kuko running around I don’t think Nyaruko made her up or maybe she did so she could have a love rival? Anyway I think that would make for a cool power for Nyaruko; however I think we have seen that type before in Kore Wa Zombie desu ka with Yuu’s powers. So, what did you think of episode two!? Was it less about the story and jokes this time? Or was the focus spent more on Kuko’s burning passion for Nyaruko? Let me know what you thought! Thanks.

I’ll leave it to Skylion to gush about the HILARIOUS use of Mythos references to populate Rl’yeh. Instead I’ll answer just why Nyarlko’s got a ‘Full Force’ alternate form that just screams “Kamen Rider”…

Because it is intentional. Nyarlko is very much a tokusatsu-nut in-universe, and as this pic comparison shows, the very COVERS of the LNs are references to both Classic (Showa) and new (Heisei) Kamen Rider poses.

    • skylion says:

Goodness, Myssa, I’ll take up the torch.

I will have to watch the show a second time to see if I can pick up all the references to the Mythos, but one stands out in mind, and that would be the idea of Ry’lth itself.

When first dipping your toe into the Mythos, you will probably run right into the mighty one, Cthulhu him/itself. Of course, he lies at the bottom of the ocean, surpassing death itself, sleeping and dreaming his way into the minds of humanity. His sunken city is where he sleeps.

When you become a fan, Ry’leth takes on a great deal of importance. It stands out in the fiction. Yes, you have much more exotic locals in the Mythos, but the Sunken City is special. Our imagination fixes on it and it becomes a dream-land in and of itself. Perfect, in a show that takes the piss out of anything is gets it’s cute little hands, to make it an amusement park of all things.

As I said, I’ll watch with an eye for more detail. As it was, I had an incredibly hard time taking my eyes of the Hot Yuri Action.

    • Foshizzel says:

LOLOL I love that picture Myssa and damn I can tell Nyaurko really really loves “Kamen Rider” after all she was spazing out with episode one.

Thanks for sharing that! Also those LN covers? DAaamn they are so cute xDDD

  2. tatsuya says:

haha ..what is that old man name ?? Nodens ?? well he look’s like kyoshin poseidon GOD

    • Myssa Rei says:

Except that’s how Nodens was described by Derleth.

Oddly enough, Nodens is one of the Elder Gods who (indirectly) aided Humanity against the Outer Gods, Nyarlathothep in particular.

      • skylion says:

They played that fairly well. Nodens really doesn’t care all that much for humanity in general; the general gist is that he/it thinks of our minds as…untidy.
That he thinks that Mahiro wouldn’t mind being in a BL story, is the root of the joke.

Once I saw him in the preview, I knew he sent the Nightgaunts, as they are his servants; and they typically kick the asses of the Shakti. So one more joke explained.

    • Foshizzel says:

Old anime characters are usually the badasses like the ones in Fairy Tail! There are lots of guild leaders that sport epic beards xDDD

@Myssa- Every time I hear the word Elder Gods I always think Mortal Kombat! I guess those games and failed live action movies didn’t help lol.

@Skylion- Nodens made me crack up! He looked so serious and then BLAAM! Totally switched personalities on the fly? Amaazzing and poor Mahiro! At least he has Nyaruko on his side…

  3. Myssa Rei says:

Kudos to the folk from Asuki for finding this in 4chan. The situation of one Mahiro Yasaka, as if written in H.P. Lovecraft’s style:

    The Crawling Chaos.

    • skylion says:

Oh, good catch. Bravo to that 4chaner. It takes all the wicked comedy and mild ecchi away, and inserts some creep factor.

    • Foshizzel says:

Amazing catch from 4chan! I hear they sometimes have something good to say most of the time xDD

      • Myssa Rei says:

It’s kind of rate in my opinion, but these are the OCD people who analyzed every bit of Madoka Magica when it aired so…

        • Foshizzel says:

Ahahah yeah! I remember those days of Madoka…people went nuts with that and I can’t imagine the 4chan reactions besides the Meduka posts I have seen on youtube…

  4. skylion says:

    OK, Mythos! Break it down!

So, the first element is Nyaruko stopping the galaxy. The Crawling Chaos in Lovecraft’s tales is part of a trium. The Outer Gods. Azathoth, Yog-Sototh, and our darling Moe Goddess. These are personified cosmic forces that often defy description (which is always ironic since writer’s cannot but help to describe them). So, when she says, the stars are right…they are, just because she says so.

The Stars are Right is often quoted. It’s one of the big nameplates of the Mythos. Basically, it’s astrology. When the constellations are in a specific order, then shall Ry’lth rise from our oceans deepest depths, Cthulhu shall awaken, and the world has a great big birthday party goes down the cosmic toilet bowl. In our show, this is how Nyarly gets tickets to an amusement park! I am in love!

All aboard me hearties, the Ill Ship Dagon setting sail. Dagon. Dagon and his sweet girlfriend are essential ocean monsters. In some cases Dagon will breed with the women folk of various coastal town and produce hybrids. No, not gas and electric cars. Hybrid sea monster/person. Deep Ones they are called. One famous town in New England, Innsmouth, basically became the number one hot spot for all things Dagon. Human population: Negligible. Deep One Population: Thriving. And, during the mating season it becomes like a college town during rush week.

So, on our approach to Cthulhu Corportations Magical Mystery Show, we get glimpses of the Great Race of Yith, some Gugs, and random Fungi from Yuggoth, aka the Mi-go from Pluto (why that guy is riding into town is unknown as them fun-guys can fly in space), and various other bits and pieces.

Madness Mountain is a play on Space Mountain, the Disney amusement, and Lovecraft’s master statement, his novella At the Mountains of Madness. It’s a heart warming tale of the discovery of the remains of things best left untouched deep in Antarctica and the insanity they produce. What happens in the Mountains….comes with you, for ever.

Arkham Haunted House. Arkham, Mass is a fictional town crated by Lovecraft. It is the home of his fictional university Miskatonic U (Go Go Fighting Cephalapods). It’s library contains most of the profane knowledge that the Mythos describe. Including the Necronomicon. Arkham House is a publishing company created by Lovecraft’s friend August Derleth. That should explain the pun.

The Go Carts of Leng Plateu. Leng changes from place to place. In some stories it is in central Asia, in other’s it is thought to be in the Dreamlands (alternate dimension, think of it as a bit Mythos Lite with some fantasy elements added). Why they need go-carts is beyond me. I like go-carts. I don’t want to go cart on Leng. It has cannibal cults.

I got a mask from the mascot, Innsmouth-kun. I would be as excited as she it. I mentioned Innsmouth above, the mask is a cartoony Deep One. Points for the next cut having a Deep One wearing a Deep One mask.

The auction house. It looks bigger on the inside. Folded space and warped geometries is a key madness inducer in the Mythos stories.

Nodens. Is a chief god in the Dreamlands, he like to hunt with Nightguants, the Shakti and other servants of Nyarlarthotep are his favorite targets.

Cthugga. Basically a sentient mini-sun. One of Nyarly’s only weaknesses (never really explained why in the stories as from my recollection…I guess every big bad needs something to balance it out). Characters in the stories summon him or his servants to defeat the Crawling Chaos at times.

And…….they use it as bait for Hot Loli Yuri Action. I never would have known that it all came down to unrequited love. The universe is a strange place. A strange HNNNNNNNNG place.

    • Rakuen says:

Mad props for this post. Why aren’t you blogging this yourself? 😮

      • skylion says:

        Fosh? Megane-mistress?

        • skylion says:

Oh, goodness. Thank you for the mad prop-age, Rakuen. I forget my manners.

I also want to point out one thing. The above may or may not be wrong. Lovecraft never intended any of this stuff to be canon, or official. He liked the fact that his friends took a ball he made and ran with it. He took it from previous authors he admired. So lots of that stuff was drawn from many memories and a hasty look up on the wikipedia.

It may be a) stuff I wrote many years in the past that I now remember as “official” or b)stuff that happened in games I either played or ran using Chaosium Publishing’s fine Call of Cthulhu RPG (the sit down at a table with friend RPG…analog…not digital).

          Thanks, again.

        • Foshizzel says:

Wait what? Ahahaha are you talking about the green haired older character? If so yes! I can’t wait for her xD

        • Karakuri says:

Hold up. Am I supposed to be megane-mistress?

Anyways, HOLY CRAP that is a ton of information. I can’t believe they took the time/effort to incorporate all that. Rakuen is right, man. Why aren’t you blogging this? xD

    • Foshizzel says:

I AM PREPARED Great Cthulhu master! Aka Myssa and Skylion <3

Ahahah that amusement park was amazing and all those random demons? Perfect addition and it reminds me of a past Gintama episode that deals with a demon carnival…

Monster powered boats for the win! Also One-Piece references all over the place! Jrow Nyaruko is our perfect waifu she loves pirates and treasure! Wooooo Hooooo! <3

LOL Madness mountain and Arkham Haunted House and go carts! That place has everything, but that is amazing how much they can squeeze from the books and place it in Haiyore? I am impressed.

Ahahha yep the highlight of the episode! HOT YURI between gods? And cute girls doing cute girls is always a plus right? I swear anime has almost turned me into a yuri lover…

Yeah Hnnngging all over this episode

      • skylion says:

Cute girls doing cute things? Goodness would something like this ever happen in Ichigo Mashimaro, or Tamayura, or, or, or……..

        HNNNNNNNNNNNNGGGGGGGGGGG

        • BlackBriar says:

Maybe, maybe not but it almost did happen in Ben-To between the BL novel writer Oshiroi and her yuri friend Ume. They were even in bed half naked together.

  5. Liza says:

I loved this episode, it was so hilarious and I loved all of the references. Even the BL show that poor Mahiro was going to be put in was a reference(the name alludes me but I know it exists). I really can’t wait for Kuko to join the main duo at the house. Things are bound to get interesting then. XD

    • Foshizzel says:

Agreed I loved all of the hilarious references this week and yeah even the random BL thing was funny! Poor Mahiro he has so much stuff to deal with. Same I can’t wait to see how Kuko acts around Nyaruko in school, but if anything I can bet she will constantly peek up Nyaruko’s skirt!

I am waiting for the blonde “boy” to show up, but we all know our anime! He is probably a she or something like that.

      • skylion says:

The “boy” goes by the name of Hasta. Hastur, the King in Yellow. Have you seen the Yellow Sign? (Hasta is hiding behind it in the OP!)

        NO MASK! NO MASK!

The character actually predates Lovecraft by about 20 or so years.

The King in Yellow (yellow hair, and the yellow track suit) is a tale about mistaken and stolen identity. Or about false identity. So, you may be on the right track about his/her gender.

        • Myssa Rei says:

FOOL! YOU SAID IT’S NAME! AND THRICE EVEN! YOU’VE DOOMED US ALL.

Well, at worst one’s going to have a 1 in 4 chance of getting attacked by a Byakhee…

        • Foshizzel says:

You mean the token Rei Kugimiya character? OH YES! PLEASE LET THERE BE SOME SHUT UPS THROWN IN! Hnnngggg, but wait she is playing a “boy” that might be a “girl” WUT DO I DO!?

Does Hastur use wind or electric attacks? For some reason I kept thinking that character was a wasp due to the color scheme and hair style…

LOLOL so that character is one of those who can not be named? Hooray!

          • skylion says:

As far as I know from the stories, Hastur shows up at the party, has a nice time with everyone playing masquerade, and is perfectly charming until the time to remove the masks comes. The end of our party is the beginning of his.

  6. Rakuen says:

Alright, so I caught Big O and s-CRY-ed references in this episode, which took me by surprise. I’m still not too wild about the show, but I’d say it was an improvement over last week for me. Now that the obligatory yuri (which is both yuri and obligatory) is out of the way, let’s see if the writers have anything up their sleeves.

    • Foshizzel says:

OH MY GOD I FORGOT!! They did have a Big O and S-CRY-ed reference! Good job catching that one Rakuen I guess it is safe to say the creator or directing team loves “action” and “mecha” anime! I do love seeing random references popping up randomly in anime.

LOL ALL THE YURI! Seriously they were like enjoy the jokes and oh ya CRANK UP DAT YURI METER! Ahahaha good job it was definitely the hottest of the series so far <3

    • skylion says:

Yuri. Out of the way? Fosh, what does this statement mean? I’ve looked up the words, but I cannot seem to get the sentence to make any sort of rational sense. Is Rakuen saying that there is an excuse to not have…not have. No, that wouldn’t be right.

      ….not have any more yur….

No. Still doesn’t make any sense.

      • BlackBriar says:

“Yuri. Out of the way?” “Not have any more yuri?” Aah, that does not compute!! *shorts out*

      • Rakuen says:

Note I said the obligatory yuri is out of the way. The yuri that must exist by virtue of Cthuko’s definition as a character (and it being produced by Xebec). The uninspired yuri, if you will. I didn’t say anything about all yuri.

        • Myssa Rei says:

I prefer to think of it as a logical extension of fan overthinking with regards to Cthugha’s relationship with the Crawling Chaos. I mean, the Burning One is always summoned to drive Nyarly away right? That’s bound to cause UST.

      • Foshizzel says:

YURI POWERED ANIME! How about that? Just like BRS…yes…or maybe more like Rinne no lagrange? Or even Mouretsu Pirates? All of those shows have “yuri” moments even if it is mostly implied it still fits xDD

        • BlackBriar says:

Don’t forget Inu x Boku SS’s Nobara, Mirai Nikki’s Mao who’s always stalking Hinata, Nisemonogatari’s Kanbaru, various yuri moments in Senki Zesshou Symphogear and more famously, the Kuroko x Misaka pair up.

          • Foshizzel says:

Yeaaaahhhhh they had plenty of yuri service in inu X Boku and Syphogear aka yurigear or failgear…

  7. Karakuri says:

….I have to admit, I find that this show is 5489748310588910 times better after that Wakamoto parody of the OP.

    • Foshizzel says:

Ohh? Are you taking part in the fandom of Haiyore! If so YAY! I think this is a lot of fun so far <3 Yeah that Wakamoto OP IS GREAT! To bad it was removed from da youtubes...I wonder if anyone made another?!

      • Karakuri says:

I just spam it on nico nico now xD then you get all of the hilarious Japanese comments… provided you can read them.

As for if I’m joining in, yeah lol Wakamoto makes everything better xDDD

        • Foshizzel says:

          True!

Awesome I hope you can find something to enjoy with this series because I look forward to it every week <3

    • BlackBriar says:

Looks like this show has made another fan and on the second episode, too. With all the randomness and the yuri, it’s looking pretty good. High five!!!

  8. akagami says:

Ok, you convinced me to at least try episode 2. I was tempted by the faces (1%), the references (2%), and that yuri scene (97%).

    • Foshizzel says:

Whahahaha yes! Successful mission is successful <3

Yeah with a character like Kuko around now you can expect to see random yuri filled moments with Nyaruko x Kuko, but even if the you are not to hardcore into yuri like myself you can enjoy all of the random references! At least I did xD

  9. BlackBriar says:

This show sure is living up to its “parody” genre. I mean, One Piece, Big O, Star Wars and s-CRY-ed references. What are they going to try next?

Mahiro is different for a male lead. He saw Nyaruko leave and when he got home and saw her, he kept his cool and didn’t freak out. We’d normally get an over the top “Why are still here?! You were supposed to be gone” or something similar like that along the way. Where does Mahiro get all his forks? He has one no matter where he goes. Has he met Senjougahara or Urabe Mikoto? They should meet.

There was so much perversion that I’m surprised it wasn’t uncensored. Kuko was basically walking around naked with red paint on her body. And, oh the yuri!! It was cranked up to 100!! Kuko gave us plenty of hot blooded yuri action. How could she think she could ever have children with Nyaruko? Wishful thinking, though. Hahahaha!!

    • Myssa Rei says:

How could she think she could ever have children with Nyaruko?

Sex is rarely a barrier when it comes to Great Old Ones. We’re talking about things that are beyond human comprehension after all, and are just in human form because it’s convenient for them.

    • Foshizzel says:

References all over the place and I loved every single one of them! Good eye on catching the ones I missed…wait there was a star wars ref!? Whereeee?!

That scene was so Gintama to me! Seriously Mahiro is quite a funny main lead character and agreed where the hell did he keep all those deadly forks? I think he has a portal in his uniform. LOLOL Those girls would cause him more headaches than he needs or would they? Fufufufu

Truth right there, but damn Kuko is a interesting character just based on design complete with plenty of DAT ass action in this episode. Yes hot blooded yuri! Oh in the world of anime anything is possible with girl x girl…oh the horror…THE HORROR!

      • Myssa Rei says:

Actually I think it’s the very same fork from the first episode. He just brings it wherever he goes, meaning it’s just sitting in his pocket until the time Nyarlko goes into heat…

        • Foshizzel says:

Ahahah I was about to make a unlimited forks works joke…yes…Mahiro is smart to keep himself armed at all times! Yesssss smart guy.

        • BlackBriar says:

If it’s very same fork he’s been carrying around all this time then that means he’s prepared anytime Nyaruko goes into heat like a cat and try to jump his bones. I wouldn’t be surprised if she tried to assault him in his sleep.

      • BlackBriar says:

Remember how every Stars Wars movie begins with a narrative intro and it fades to black whenever it reaches the top of the screen? That was what was happening while Kuko was quoting their CQC textbook.

LOL. Senjougahara and Urabe would cause Mahiro headaches but they would keep him in check. Maybe he does need those forks from time to time considering that Nyaruko is an ambitious pervert for saying that if she doesn’t get back to Mahiro soon, they’ll take his virginity before she does. Hahahaha, go get him, Nyaruko.

        • Foshizzel says:

OH DERP! That one ahahahaha yesssssss I remember it now I guess I was distracted by uhh a certain fire girl >.>

Life for Mahiro sure is tough everyone is out to “get” him in some odd way! Either for babies or blood? Or in Nodens case “Fame” Whahahaha

  10. Tofu says:

Awesome! Hilarious! Yuri development? DOUBLE AWESOME!!! LOLS!

Haiyore is such a great comedy series which uses a lot of ‘wtf’ and overexaggerated scenes as comedy but it works in the end ;D It’s definitely not something story and plot driven and well… they’re using the story itself and any ‘plots’ you think they have as their actual comedy so I think that’s a pretty smart move. The characters are so lovable and even though the main guy is so normal, it’s what Nyaruko does to/with him which makes things interesting to watch ;D Keep it up Fosh!

    • Foshizzel says:

Hell ya man the yuri was cranked up to full with Kuko and Nyaruko together <3 <3

Agreed Tofu there are lots of WTF moments and lots of random references flying at you! Sometimes I miss a few of them, but damn are they hilarious like One Piece and lots of Gundam and other shows I want moar! Plot wise things are going slow but damn is it ever interesting xD

      I shall! xD

  11. Jrow says:

a random One Piece joke with the whole “I will break into a prison to save my brother.” Oh my god Jrow, you better be watching this series.

I will take this advice from you as soon as I finish Inu Boku. ^^

    • Foshizzel says:

Ahahah great!! This series is going to be a sort of Gintama clone in terms of random references from other anime! I hope there are some bleach jokes in the future…

Ah have fun! Inu x Boku is a interesting series.
