Mouretsu Pirates – 12

Coorie has a hundred tabs opened while she surfs the web.

So with the winter anime season about to officially wrap up soon, are you prepared for the spring anime season? It is just around the corner, but it still is hard to believe this season is over with! I will miss a few of the winter shows and happy to see some of them finally wrap up. Anyway time for our weekly space adventures with Marika and the Bentenmaru crew.

Plot this week follows Gruier leading Marika and the Bentenmaru crew inside the Golden Ghost Ship.

Marika-“Don’t move because there is a giant alien above us.”                  Gruier-“Why are you trolling me yo.”

So, when we last left off with captain Marika, she was talking to Gruier about following her inside the Golden Ghost Ship as it jumped into sub space. True to her word, Marika fully intends to help Gruier as she is joined by handful crew members and explores the ship with the princess. Exploring the Golden Ghost Ship also requires the use of space suits; however, Gruier has little practice dealing with zero gravity and Marika gives her a few tips and tricks to mastering space and I swear they look more like siblings every time they are in the same room together.

Marika-“Take my hand, little girl, and come with me on an adventure!”                       Gruier-“Do I really have a choice?”

Schnitzer-“Be right back, I need to recharge my batteries…the yuri vibes are wearing me out.”

Before anyone can explore the ship, they have to open the giant door. That is where Schnitzer comes in handy to open doors and generally look awesome, but Gruier seems to like watching him… can I ship these two? The super moe princess and super strong cyborg… Anyways, Hyakume gets to play around with some old computers with Gruier using her super secretive password, but really I think her password might have to do something with cute puppies and kittens, right? Once the crew gets past the first few doors, they discover there is no treasure left aboard at all! Why is there no real treasure left? Marika learns that Gruier’s family had to sell some of their valuables during times of economic crisis! So they practically have nothing left.

Marika-“Wow, this is so cool!”                  Gruier-“You don’t get out much, huh?”             Misa-“She isn’t allowed to.”

After passing through the treasure room they enter a massive section of the ship filled with sleep chambers filled with various animals from Gruier’s home planet along with various DNA samples to go along with the animals. So, just think of it like giant space ship of Noah’s Ark. Yeah, that works minus the frozen animals of course or you can get technical like Hyakume and call it a DNA bank. Besides frozen goats and other animals, there are more sections of the Golden Ghost Ship to explore. This time they arrive at a special looking door that requires some DNA from Gruier just to open. What is behind this door?  After Schnitzer and the Bentenmaru crew force it open, they discover a giant pink flower inside you remember it right? We have seen it a few times in the opening.

GOATS IN SPACEEEEEEEE!

Marika-“Damn, I really wanted to get some ice cream.”                     Gruier-“I wouldn’t eat any from here if I were you.”

Grunhilde-“Prepare yourself, sister! WE WILL BATTLE!”                       Gruier-“FINE! I challenge you to a dance battle.”

What is so special about this giant flower? Misa explains that it’s actually an artificial womb containing the serenity family DNA and where the royal family was born. Awesome, so in the future we will have children inside giant flowers?! The future sure looks strange… Anyway before they can talk more about this random flower, Gruier’s sister arrives with her crew to challenge her for control of the Golden Ghost Ship. The two teams suddenly start attacking each other after Marika threw a grenade at them. However during all the chaos of this short battle both sides temporally knock out Grunhilde and Gruier with some gas. When Gruier wakes up, she looks around to find the Bentenmaru crew working along with Grunhilde’s team because both of them figured out they were all after the same goal all along.

Marika-“Sorry bro, I had to knock you out for a while.”                 Gruier-“If you weren’t so cute I’d punch you.”

I don’t think anyone minds if you do that, Coorie.

Before the episode ends, Misa comes out with a baby in her arms. No it is not her baby…but it is from the Golden Ghost Ship so you are probably thinking… wait a minute did you say a space ship had a baby? Yes, that actually happened! Okay, maybe not exactly that way, but still there was a baby onboard. So, if Gruier never found the Golden Ghost Ship the baby would still be asleep and frozen in cyro-sleep forever. Gruier gets to hold the last Serenity royal family member to be born from the space ship! Hooray another princess or prince to take care of… The episode comes to an end shortly afterwards with Gruier and Grunhilde returning the Golden Ghost Ship back to their home planet to restore the glory to the royal family. While the girls give their speech, the Bentenmaru uses this chance to return to the Sea of the Morningstar ending the episode in classic captain Marika style.

Misa-“Yeah, we found this baby, but I don’t want it so yeah…”                Gruier-“EHHHHHHHHHHH!?”

Marika-“Man this is some good drugs, Gruier!”        Gruier-“What drugs? Ahahaha Marika you are insane.”

Marika-“Anything is possible if you are a pirate! Like becoming friends with a princess…”

Soldiers-“Whoa, this is like the best anime of all time guys.”               Captain-“Hnnggg they are so cute.”

Extra space pirate fun

Marika is serious about her space themed sporting events.

Schnitzer-“I dare you to say I am cute again and I will cut you in half.”

Kane-“Damn, I want to drive this giant ship around.”                  Coorie-“I don’t really feel like dying today.”

Marika-“Let’s jet, I have to get home and write a fifty page report on penguins.”

Damn, this was such an exciting episode because we finally got to see the inside of the massive Golden Ghost Ship. But was it really all that exciting? I was waiting to see some treasure inside or super weapon…but I can see why Gruier wanted to find this ship filled with lots of important DNA from her home planet and frozen animals. Hooray, they can repopulate her planet with farm animals. Did they ever explain what gender the baby was? I guess we can just say it was the ninth princess…yeah…they need to stop adding more princess characters! Next thing you know we might have a member of the Bentenmaru crew coming out as another “princess”. Just imagine if someone like Coorie was royalty?

Speaking of the Bentenmaru crew, we got to see Schnitzer in action opening all those locked doors, but I died laughing at the start of the episode while he held the giant plug for the ship…that was crazy looking! I really want more episodes with Schnitzer running around, but I really want to see him entering a fight soon…maybe the second half will feature more of him being a badass? I really hope so! Anyway besides Mr. Cyborg we got to see more of Captain Marika’s quick thinking, but in the end it was more like sneaky Captain Marika. I wonder when they will play the flashback episode about Marika’s father because it seems that Gruier knew him very well, I predict it will air soon or near the end of the series.

What else happened? There was a really nice scene with Gruier and Marika after with the two girls finally having a moment to share a few laughs together. This just proves Captain Marika is able to unwind after a long series of missions. However this does appear to be an end to the whole princess Gruier arc for now. Overall this was a decent story filled episode and maybe a character builder themed episode as well? I didn’t mind not seeing any real action, but the characters made up for the lack of an epic battle aboard the Golden Ghost Ship.

YOU CAN’T HANDLE THESE TWO LOLIS.

Gruier and Grunhilde have a sleep over at Marika’s house? Prepare for high levels of cute next week.

That comment could be interpreted the other way, that is the baby was being introduced to Gruier, who was the BABY’s older sister. In that case, which I think is likely, the gender is still unspecified.

    • Foshizzel says:

Either way it makes for another princess or possibly a prince?! Yes I approve of a possible prince character <3

  2. Bob from Accounting says:

That ranks among the most disappointing anticlimaxes I’ve ever seen. It would have been okay if this was stand-alone episode strory, or at a stretch a two-parter. But after six episodes of build-up, we get THIS? Smoke grenade, hug and make up, then a flower shits a baby? What the hell was the point of this arc? There was a fleet of battleships and a potential civil war within a big messed-up royal family and it just ends like that. Writers, please do not set up potential awesome if you’re planning such a lame ending. Grr so mad.

    • Foshizzel says:

Yeah they did a lot of building up to something amazing, but I guess they didn’t really do a whole lot with Gruier did they? I wish they found a older relative aboard the Golden Ghost Ship instead of a baby.

YES! I wanted to see a epic battle between the Bentenmaru crew and the other teams after the Golden Ghost Ship! Ah well fingers crossed for possible fire fights in future episodes.

This. So much. I expected more shocking revelation and more actions, and yet we ended up getting something this tedious

  3. BlackBriar says:

This episode was so awesome! The mysterious ghost ship adventure was quite interesting. I liked how the events turn after another. I keep underestimating how smart Marika is despite her ditzy appearence. Totally didn’t imagine her making a secret alliance with the members of the other ship. Her methods are to be feared.

I like Marika’s line of thinking. Forget searching the ship, leave it to the Royal military. We’re pirates, so we’re going straight to the treasure.

Very nice, hard to imagine a ship that size being 1000 years old, but as it goes old technology is as good if not better than current stuff in space anime. The inside of the ship itself looks big enough to hold huge land masses. And it’s even more impressive with that synthetic flower that managed to last so long.

    • Foshizzel says:

Great episode! I really loved how things went with the Golden Ghost Ship and agreed Marika is amazing to watch! Ahahah yeah she was quite sneaky with her plan wasn’t she?

GOLD! HOORAY GOLD! Marika has the right pirate brain.

Kane would wreck that ship with his driving skills xD

      • BlackBriar says:

Yeah, Marika is the best reason to watch this. It’s going to be awkward seeing her back in school life. I’ve gotten used to her being a full time space pirate and she’s pretty good at it. Well, at least this means we get to see more of her run-ins with Chiaki and her parfait cravings.

Never let Kane drive any delicate piece of machinery. We’ve already seen what he did with the Bentenmaru.

        • Foshizzel says:

Yeah I know seeing Marika in school feels unnatural to me like you said we are so used to seeing her a pirate it feels strange. OH BOY! I love every random encounter with Chiaki! I can’t wait to see how she gets paid back for covering Captain Marika.

Poor Kane! Why must he be denied access to pilot such a amazing ship? True he would smash that thing into a moon just because he attempts to “park” it.

  4. skylion says:

Oh, Fosh, you devil. You know I can handle two lolis.

Speaking of which, did those two crazy kids get to speak their minds at the end or what? Can I get a what? The heck were they gonna say. “Got ourselves a new baby smell bouncing royal, and oh, all of us abdicate, have some frozen livestock. You guys dig goats, right?”

Sheezh, at least they can go to school now.

I want Marika at my back for any fight now…..Awaiting the next arc, LOLIS IN SPAAAAAACE !!!!!

    • Foshizzel says:

      Ahahah yes this is true.

I know right? I was happy that Marika knocked Gruier out and the other sister they were just rambling for a while…yes brand new brother or sister and frozen goats!? Hooray now they can restore the planet <3

YES! SCHOOL ARC HERE WE COME with double princess characters.

Agreed! My perfect team of girls Marika, Chiaki, Jenny, Coorie and crossover id throw Madoka, Muginami, Lan and Asteria from Lagrange into a random episode of Mouretsu! Yes more LOLIS IN SPACE <3 <3 <3 <3

  5. HannoX says:

This story arc ended one episode earlier than I thought it would. That’s all right–it leaves room for 2 or 3 more arcs.

This anime continues to surprise with it not going the way you think it will. Resolving the situation without a big battle may seem disappointing, but it’s always better to avoid battle if possible. Once more Marika showed just how intelligent she is by ending it peacefully.

I loved what we saw of the interior of the GGS. Part of it looked like an O’Neil colony. The people behind this anime clearly love SF and speculative science and have done their homework well.

Goats in space? Not really as cool as PIGS IN SPAAAACE!

Next episode it looks like more of Blaster Ririka and the Space Yacht Club. I hope they’re in for more than one episode. They deserve a full story arc. We still haven’t found out what the issues are with some of the girls that Misa and Kane refered to, only for Lynn and Jenny.

    • HannoX says:

Who wants to see a hacker battle between Lynn and Coorie?

    • Foshizzel says:

True! I bet they could have squeezed in more episodes about Gruier and the new baby…at least next time we get to see the two girls in school with Marika.

Right! I would have loved a knock down battle to break out, but you are correct it is better to avoid conflict especially when you have important people to look out for like princess Gruier.

Basically FARM ANIMALS IN SPAAACEE!!! <3

Yeah next week looks to be more interesting! I am curious to see what kind of new "arc" we are headed towards...I am looking forward to seeing how Marika and the two princess girls interact with each other! Grunhilde seems to be a hardcore Tsundere type of girl...

That hacker battle would be amazing to see <3

  6. skylion says:

I wanna see a hacker battle between Coorie and Tsugumi. Cause 1)Baaaaaaaad Azzzzzz. 2)Tsugumi would be in a decent show. Oh, Fosh, I’m still huuuuurting. My waifu is gone.

    • Foshizzel says:

HNNGGGGG That is the best hacker battle! Tsugumi and Coorie…wow just wow!

I know the feel! I miss seeing my Ayase <3

      • BlackBriar says:

Hacker battle royale: Tsugumi, Coorie and Lynn!!!

I miss Inori, Hare, Ayase and Tsugumi. They were definitely worth watching.

        • Bob from Accounting says:

You can’t have an anime hacker battle without inviting Ed. It would just be impolite.

        • Foshizzel says:

@BlackBriar- That needs to be animated.

YES! I MISS THEM TOO! Yes even Inori xD

          @Bob- FK YA! ED! I can’t believe I almost forgot her D:

  7. Hawthorne says:

I was a little disappointed, but this episode was still great! I was hoping for some really exciting secrets to be revealed within the ship, but ah well! I’m happy they managed to work out their differences.

I’m glad we’re getting back to the girls from the school next week, I was starting to miss them, especially the one green haired girl who always smiles and waves. Besides, school stuff in anime is usually pretty fun! XD

    • Foshizzel says:

Yeah that seems to be the overall feeling from the blog world being generally disappointed, but you are right! This was exciting to finally find out what secrets Gruier was hiding inside the Golden Ghost Ship.

Yes! I can’t wait to see the character interactions next week it should provide a few laughs. LOLOL That random waving girl makes me laugh! Just why does she wave all the time? I guess excitement happens whenever Marika walks into a room <3

      • Rakuen says:

She waves to make you ask why she waves.[/meta]

        • Foshizzel says:

lololol then she accomplished her secret mission!

          • BlackBriar says:

That action alone means she was baiting us for a long time. Hook, line and sinker. And we fell for it.

            • Bob from Accounting says:

If by ‘fell for it’ you mean we were lead to believe that these past six episodes were actually leading up to something and were not in fact a monumental waste of time, then yes. She got us good.

  8. Ying says:

The ending flt very anti-climatic to me. I don’t even really know why since I didn’t expect a big fight to break out. It would have been cooler if there would have been some treasure on board of some sort.

I don’t know am I the only one that isn’t getting pirate vibes from this show? It just seems like Marika is captaining a normal ship. Maybe it’s the lack of action or the way people react to being robbed -_-‘

I might skip the next episode and just read about it here. I haven’t liked the school themed episodes so far and this one doesn’t look any special either.

    • Foshizzel says:

YARR! That ending to this “arc” felt really really week compared to the others, but I don’t seriously know what else they could have done differently? Maybe if Gruier actually found a old queen from the past frozen? Maybe even a king? Treasure would have been amazing or a weapon?

Nope I bet there are others out there that feel the same, but you are right I don’t like the reactions from the rich characters getting robbed! Then again the Bentenmaru crew are “legal pirates” so I can’t picture them going out and stealing stuff from the poor…that said I want to see other illegal pirates attack them! Forcing the crew to actually fight.

Filler is headed our way for a while I can tell, fingers crossed for non beach/pool episodes! However I can’t lie I wouldn’t mind seeing the cast of girls in swimsuits…or will that kill the whole “non-fanservice” mood from Mouretsu? If they did I would hope they would avoid low camera shots and all that jazz.

  9. HannoX says:

Hey, if they’re returning to Sea of the Morningstar, does that mean we get more scenery porn of the planet and city?

  10. anaaga says:

What the hell. Babies in space? That’s more like something to be laughed about rather than to be shocked over. And here I thought that there will be finally some battle too.

    The hell

    • Foshizzel says:

hahahah yeah don’t worry to much Anaaga I laughed too! True I wanted to see a space battle.

  11. Jrow says:

Shoutout to you and Verdant for talking about it enough to get me to watch. I’ve caught up to Mouretsu Pirates! Glad I hopped aboard the Odette II, it’s a fun ride with Marika and company!

They really have this space detailed chatter down pat. Sometimes I feel like I’m slow absorbing all the information that Coorie and the others talk about. I have a 30-second rewind feature on the iPad for Crunchyroll, and I had to use that a few times.

This arc as a whole? I did like the training stuff overall more and I’ll agree on Bob’s point about 6-episodes building up to this. I don’t think I was expecting some epic battle, but I would’ve liked some lasting effect from this arc to carry over or something more “big picture” came up. Although, I will say that I kind of hope HannoX’s point about there being different arcs pans out; that’d be fun to meet a new character and spend a handful of episodes with them.

When I mentioned Marika eating, I didn’t think I’d actually see her eat at some point during the arc! Kind of a funny coincidence for me to say that. And Misa is kind of the mom of the ship, though I think where I went wrong was that my impression of her based off what you and Verdant said didn’t match up.

    • Foshizzel says:

Hell ya! This is awesome news and it sounds like you are having fun with Mouretsu! Yeah Marika and company make the series so addictive.

LOLOL Yeah once a character like Coorie gets going with the techno talk it can be a bit fast…I have to pause the episode sometimes just to catch whatever it is she rambles on about xD

I KNOW RIGHT!? After ll that build up of a possible political war with Gruier’s family versus the Bentenmaru and any other pirates you would think we could have a epic space battle! Yeah the arcs so far have been either world building or character building, but all and all I really hope we get a time jump or some ship to ship combat.

Yeah Misa is definitely the mom type of character for Marika and the Bentenmaru crew! Although she does bitch and bark orders all the time, however that is her job I assume she only does it to help Marika become a better “leader” or Misa is a fan of tough love xD
