50 things you didn’t know about Jrow

When Luffy reaches Raftel, will Jrow still be an anime fan?

So it looks like I’m up next to answer 50 questions. I’m glad I had time to mull over these. They’re quite tough. Hope you enjoy all the pics, vids and audio hoopla!

Spoiler for Question 3. Enjoy “N.Y. Rush” while looking at my answers.

1. Who is your favorite male anime character?

Monkey D. Luffy from One Piece. He’s cut from the same cloth as many a shounen hero, but Luffy has qualities that make me like him not only far more than all other shounen heroes, but also my all-time favorite. He’s strong, smart, funny, dumb, he knows when to get serious, and his love of his crew is what puts him over the top for me as my favorite.

2. Who is your favorite female character?

Utena Tenjou from Revolutionary Girl Utena. Having just watched the series several months ago, I was quite amazed at how great the show is and how much I loved watching this pink-haired beauty. She has a tomboyish charm and though she was naïve in the beginning about End of the World and Rose Bride, she asserted herself quite well. I love how she didn’t stop trying to get it into Anthy’s skull that she can be her own person.

3. What is your favorite anime soundtrack?

Cowboy Bebop. I’m a Yoko Kanno fanboy and I love so many of her works in the animes she’s contributed to (GitS, Aquarion, DtB, etc.), and I think her composing of the Bebop OST is phenomenal. The style of music she brought to that series was such a great fit. Tank, so many of those Seatbelts songs, Blue; there’s a ton of great songs that I could listen to and enjoy outside the confines of the anime series. I’ll have to play some on the podcast next episode.

4. What is your favorite anime opening + animation?

Ali Project takes a fair amount of crap for that terrible Another OP, but this one here for Noir is quite enjoyable.

5. What is your favorite anime ending song + animation?

Naruto songs, man. I used to love em. I always loved Speed for the just-chillin/reading manga/gaming, and then bust outside and just run.

6. What is your favorite anime scene?

I could pick many One Piece scenes here. Nami in Arlong Park, Luffy punching a Celestial Dragon, so on and so on… this one from Episode 278 marks a significant event with a declaration of war by Luffy and the many tears of both Robin and also Franky. Luffy doesn’t leave anybody behind.

7. If you could meet an anime character who would it be?

This is tough. Most answers I have involve me meeting a harem lead just so he can introduce me to hot babes. I think I’d just go with Luffy; it doesn’t seem like there’d be a dull moment with him on the Thousand Sunny whether we fish or run around having fun.

8. What anime character is most similar to you in terms of personality?

Tajima Yuuichirou from Oofuri. We both love the game of baseball, I wasn’t a power guy like him but could hit the ball well, and he had a great mind for the game. And like him, I agree: if you hold it in for a week, it will explode!

9. What is your favorite thing about anime?

I love the whole production of an anime. 22 minute episodes are nice, I love a lot of OP/ED theme songs (which I wish American shows would do a bit more of), the medium itself can look incredible at times and in different ways, and I love the episode structures of 12-24 or more episodes, or in the case of One Piece, it just keeps going.

10. What is your least favorite thing about anime?

Con funk. It’s gross.

11. Who are your favorite anime couple?

I would pick Ai Tanabe and Hachirota from Planetes. They hated each other at first, but that turned to a romantic interest by about the middle of the anime.

12. Who is your favorite anime animal?

Nyanko-sensei from Yuujinchou! I really love how funny he is and how he defends Natsume (even though he wants the Book of Friends).

13. What anime would make a good game?

I’d like to see a Black Lagoon game where you play as Revy going around shooting enemies. Dutch would be playable, and Eda, Roberta and Balalaika would be unlockable players. It’d be awesome.

14. What game would make a good anime?

For those familiar with the XBLA/Steam hit Bastion, I think that would be a great OVA series. Imagine the entire story being told through narrative form.

15. What was the first anime you ever watched?

Star Blazers. My dad was familiar with it when he was in the Marines (stationed in Japan, lived in Okinawa for a number of years before I was born) and he bought the VHS tapes when we saw them at a Suncoast store in the U.S. I remember watching them with him and that being my first exposure to japanimation.

16. Do you think you’ll ever stop watching anime?

I wonder about it a lot, actually. I think I will at some point. I’ve tried to decrease my anime watching over time since I don’t think I can squeeze in 10+ shows a season. I also don’t know how much I actually fit in with the crowd, as though I’m trying to wedge my way in rather than just falling comfortably into this fandom. I think the day One Piece ends will be the day I flat out stop watching anime, but who knows how far down the road that is. Anivision and Metanorn has been really the reason why I’m still watching anime, but I’d imagine that these sites won’t be around for me forever. I’m enjoying it now and love the podcasts and going to conventions, but for an honest answer, I would predict that I won’t bring anime to my grave the way I’m sure I will with gaming.

17. What is your favorite genre of anime?

Action mostly. Not many shounen series click with me, but I love action whether there be gunplay or mecha action, etc.

18. What is your least favorite genre of anime?

Horror. I really don’t care for the genre. It’s all just so damn lame.

19. Are you open about watching anime with people you know?

Yeah, my family knows I’m into it and that I do two podcasts about it, some of my work associates know and my friends are into it just like me. I don’t tell them my love of ecchi, though.

20. Have you ever been to Japan?

Nope. I want it to happen though because I want to see all the One Piece stuff and the exhibit hall, etc. Maybe… just maybe when the New World Era movie comes to theaters.

21. What anime was the biggest let down for you?

Though I like Tenjou Tenge, I’d classify it as a letdown anime. It was made way too early before the “uncensored dvd” era kicked off, the ending was very meh as most manga-adapted anime are and the OVA wasn’t much of anything. Then the manga took this really weird turn at some point and was messed up.

22. What anime was better than expected?

I would say the Break Blade movie series. I didn’t have any interest after the first film, but after a ringing endorsement from my partners on episode 8 of the podcast, I decided to watch them. I didn’t enjoy movie #2, but 3-6 were really awesome.

23. What is the best anime fight scene?

Probably Rock Lee vs. Kimimura. Rock Lee and Gai fights are always awesome in Naruto, and this one during their attempt to retrieve Sasuke was really funny but yet really cool.

24. Who is your anime waifu?

Maya Natsume from Tenjho Tenge. Ever since I started watching Tenjho Tenge, man I was so hooked on her. I even still have an old CV profile I saved with all the information about her from way back. Blood Type B, wood was her associated Ki element.

25. What was your favorite video game as a child?

I loved playing the early Madden games with friends.

About Me

26. Most Embarrassing moment?

Limp Bizkit had just released Significant Other during the peak of their MTV powers, so I went out and bought the Fred Durst red yankees hat. I took so much shit for it on day 1 that I never wore it again. Make fun of that band and me all you want, but cmon, we all did it for the nookie, cmon, the nookie…

27a. Do you own a car?

Yeah. My first car was/still is a new Toyota. Never had to go thru the “used hunk of junk” vehicle phase in my teens.

27b. Can you drive?

Yes. And what I would give to be able to drive like this.

28. Are you mature?

More so than my dad. I’m the “older brother” of the family.

Seriously though, living on my own has given me much more maturity since I kind of need to be, or else I’d be troubling my parents too much. Paying bills, feeding myself in other ways than a trip to the nearby Wendy’s, learning to cook and also extending my eating palette, keeping the house clean and taking care of things that need taking care of. I’ve actually come to enjoy grocery shopping as a fun thing, though sadly a Ben-to fight never breaks out. Overall, I feel that I’m mature.

29. What year were you born?

1984. The days just keep flying by.

30. Do you prefer cats or dogs?

I’m not really a pets kind of guy, but dogs are cool. Cats are like tsunderes, right? I like tsundere girls in anime, but in real life, no thanks. (Unless that cat was Nyanko-sensei.)

31. Describe yourself physically.

6’1″, tall and lanky has always been used to describe me. White boy with brown hair (some greys spotted and plucked), and brown eyes. Also prefer the full beard with the occasional trim.

32. What would you name your first child?

For a boy, I name him Michael. Girl, I pick Sheila.

33. What is the worst injury you have ever had?

The worst was a jammed finger playing basketball, and that’s just a, “so what, shake it off” injury. I am very much a subscriber to the walk-it-off curing method.

34. What is your worse habit?

Popping my thumbs. I push my 4 fingers down into my palm, put the middle of my thumb on my index finger, and wiggle the top half of my thumb. I also pop my wrists a lot. I’m doing it as I type this and whenever you read this.

35. Do you drink or smoke?

I’m a social drinker. I don’t like beer, so other things like vodka are more my game. Never smoked and don’t ever want to.

36. Do you have a tattoo?

Nope. Sure the cool kids are doing it, but I don’t want to worry about it when I’m 70, ya know?

37. Are you a morning person or a night person?

Easily a night person. I’d love to be a morning person, but it just doesn’t work for me.

38. Have you ever slept past midday?

No. I may not be a morning person, but I’m not one to sleep in way late.

39. Do you regret anything?

Watching K-On!

40. Can you count the number of friends you have on one hand?

Facebook would say no, and I agree. Not all of  them are actual friends and I may not be all that active on the site itself, but I keep in touch with quite a few of them.

41. Do you wear glasses?

Yes. I’m near-sighted.

42. Are you a picky eater?

I used to be, but as in my answer to #28, I’ve been more willing to try new foods the past few years. I will admit that salads are still an enemy of mine. I like plenty of veggies, but no matter how much I litter that plate/bowl with pepper or spices and whatnot, it just can’t work for me.

43. Would you die for someone?

Yeah, but I’d have to be not looking at my iPhone to know a bullet is being shot or else I wouldn’t even know anything was happening until the BANG.

44. If you could have any superpower, what would it be?

Instant Transmission from Dragon Ball Z. Gas money is almost nothing to worry about and I can get to where I need to be at the speed of light. I can even bring people with me.

45. Do you believe in the supernatural?

Ocelot from Metal Gear Solid 2 said it best. “There is no such thing as miracles or the supernatural… only cutting-edge technology.”

46. Would you rather be rich or famous?

As a podcaster, I’d say some level of fame would be nice. I don’t want the nation to know about me, but I’d like to have a nice-sized pocket of fans that enjoy Anivision and MetaVerse.

47. Have you ever committed a crime?

I shot a man in Reno just to watch him die.

48. Pirates or ninjas?

Pirates because they live a much more enjoyable life. Being a ninja and having to live life in the shadows seems awful. Sure you can kill before people can blink, but I want to hang out on a pirate ship and sail the seas and have a blast!

49. Does someone have a crush on you?

Yeah. anaaga does. She wants me to be in a threesome with her and Zabo. Speaking of Zabo, she knows a guy that looks like me IRL, and though she doesn’t type it, I think what she’s trying to say is that I’m hot. 😛

50. Are you in a relationship?

Nope.

And there you have it! If you haven’t checked out the other Meta-personalities yet, click here to see Kyo’s and Hoshi’s and everyone else’s lists.

  1. Mushyrulez says:

    Who’s anaaga?

51st thing I didn’t know about you: that you were a writer for METANORN. Seriously, how many writers do you guys even have?! I can imagine how many hours of frustration and madness you guys spend just to coordinate the writing of your season preview posts…

    • Kyokai says:

Mushy, this is the hundredth time you have asked this question. You can always refer to our team page and our regular readers do bother to check who’s who. >.>

  2. Hime says:

#13 I think you read my mind.

Jrow, you are as eloquent as always. And you should totally make anaaga & zabo’s dreams come true. (you ARE hot!)

    • Jrow says:

So many anime games are the shounen action stuff or j-rpg’s; not enough shooters. I remember Gungrave from way back, but I’d like to visual style of a potential Lagoon game to look more modern and not cel-shaded.

My ego has been stroked. Thanks Hime!

  3. Tofu says:

Oh my GOD how could I not think of Bastion as a potential anime XD I haven’t finished it yet but it’s fricken beautiful that game… lols! Of course, without a certain someone’s recommendation, I’d never had picked it up to begin with or knew about it on Steam ^^ (You know who you are~ That’s if… you’re reading this…)

    • Jrow says:

Yeah, shout-out to that guy, and also that other guy too! I bought it in January for 360, so it’s been fresh in my mind. I have just a macbook, so I wish I could’ve gotten it on Steam and use the Portal Gun.

  4. Hoshi says:

~Wow, if it weren’t for this, I might have completely forgotten that I watched a couple of episodes of Tenjo Tenghe way back when. I actually liked it! But then they took it off TV (I forget which channel they had it on)…

“Most answers I have involve me meeting a harem lead just so he can introduce me to hot babes.”
-I would do the same, but there aren’t enough reverse harems who have actually good looking guys *SIGH*

“Seriously though, living on my own has given me much more maturity since I kind of need to be, or else I’d be troubling my parents too much.”
-I’m feeling the same way; I mean, now that I’ve started college and I have to do a majority of things by myself, I feel myself growing a little more mature. It’s going to be a slow process though, lol.

Glad to read this! I felt like I didn’t really know you that well, so I’m happy that I have a little more insight on who you are~.

(Woah, wrote way too much, hahaha!)

    • Jrow says:

      I think it might’ve been G4.

The only reverse harem I can think of is Uta Prince. Does Kimi to Boku count as one?

Yeah, it does take a while. When my mom and dad would stop by and still do (I still see them regularly), they’d critique how I wasn’t keeping things very nicely or looking for the little things I would think nothing of, so I learned from their visits.

Yeah yeah! It’s been since episode 2 of the podcast almost a year ago we first met, and also that hilarious tag of an episode of Hatsukoi with the Shaft jokes and trolling Hato. XD

  5. Zabobinator says:

LOLOLOLOL!!! Oh god. 49 caught me off guard! xD

I will never type it out (because IIII am faithful on my waifu! ….waifu, how dare you have a crush on somebody other than me!?), but the doctor who looked like you was hot, yah. xD

    • anaaga says:

Oh c’mon, we all know how hot he is. Even you’re drooling at his doppelganger 😉

B-but if you don’t want a threesome, I don’t mind. I’ll do whatever you want me to <3

  6. tatsuya says:

    NICE POST LOL !!!
I LIKE Jrow Post more !
    thumb ‘s up ♪( ´▽`) ლ(╹◡╹ლ)

    • Jrow says:

      Thanks tatsuya 🙂

How do you and everyone else do these emoticons? I only know the keys that are in front of me as I type.

      • Yippy says:

Either refer to Wikipedia or type ‘kaomoji’ (emoticon) while using the Google Japanese IME (there’s a note about kaomoji just above the video at the end of the article.

If there’s anything else, don’t hesitate to ask. =)

  7. Yippy says:

Y’know, from your crisp and straightforward writing, I get the feeling that you’re the mature older brother type that is usually present in most teams in shows. It’s quite cool.

I agree with Ocelot’s quote too, technology/advanced concepts can seem like magic to those who don’t understand it.

Nice reference to Johnny Cash, btw. It’s very classy and sorta sneaky…in a good way.

    • Jrow says:

Thanks! I remember when I first joined Metanorn, I didn’t really investigate the personalities and the culture of the site (I only knew Kyo and commented with Fosh a number of times) and I remember shortly after I joined thinking, “wow, I’m pretty square ’round these parts.”

haha, nice to see somebody catch my use of the Cash lyric 🙂 Can’t say I’ve done anything too offending. I got ticketed for not coming to a complete stop on a road once (I maybe stopped 95%). It was the end of the month, so I’m sure that copper just needed to make quota.

      • Yippy says:

It’s not necessarily bad being a little serious, it adds some variety to the writing of the site. That can only be a good thing, right?

        Probably, cops aren’t saints themselves…

  8. Overcooled says:

YES, I ACTUALLY LIKE THAT NOIR OP TOO! I always wondered why everyone hated Ali Project, because that was my only exposure to them (that and the Another song). After hearing more I kind of get the hate…at least they had one good song.

Awww Jrow may stop anime one day…D: I would try to stop you, but you should only keep watching it if you’re enjoying it. :/ I don’t know if not fitting into the fandom is a good reason though. I have almost none of the traits of a “typical” otaku. Anyways, it sounds like this is far, far in the future so I won’t get sad just yet.

Gahhhh, why would you pop your joints? One of my number one pet peeves! I’m so glad I don’t have to hear it…lol. Does it feel good? Satisfying? What compels you to do this? XD

Wowza Jrow, so popular with the ladies. You’re gonna destroy a marriage single-handedly!! I sense drama brewing.

    • Kyokai says:

Lol, oh this last line! xD

    • Foshizzel says:

Masta Jrow! Aka da Metanorn pimp

    • Jrow says:

I did joke on MetaVerse (I think it was 14.99) that you could layer all of their anime singles on top of each other and the sound would come out the same.

Hey if someone wants to stop my, feel free to! I wanted to ponder a more definitive answer when replying to it, so that’s why I wrote what I wrote. I do believe it mostly, but I could be wrong. I wouldn’t mind being wrong as long as American television continues to produce poorly written and directed junk shows.

Working at a desk and then being on the computer at home, I tend to need that release to pop. Satisfying for sure! I pop all my fingers (twice at the thumb with additional knuckle pop), and I also pop my left ankle which is the loudest in the rare times I can. When I walk for a long period of time, I like to go into a catcher’s position for double knee-pop action.
Cut to a few years later when I wonder why I need arthritis medication.

      I got that swag.

  9. Kyokai says:

I played the music while reading this. Best accompanying music, very suiting for a podcast expert. :3

Oh man, there was a time when I used to love the Bleach and Naruto songs because they were so addictive. I still sometimes go back to them. Very interesting answers, indeed.

High five on owning a Toyota and liking Nyanko-sensei; he’s adorable isn’t he? I’d like to get his plushie someday, when I finally attend some con! >.>

    • Jrow says:

I had Blue up there earlier, but vocals wouldn’t have been good with reading going on.

I remember as I first started watching Naruto, FLOW had that GO! song. Haruka Kanata, shoot… I can still hear Rocks in my head!

My grandma has an early 90’s Corolla that she still drives. She’s 89, so it’s mainly just a couple minutes to the grocery store, but it’s still running fine. I’m hoping my 07 Corolla will have the same longevity.

Even I’d get a Nyanko plushie. If they, in a miracle, have some at Animazement, I will buy two and be asking for a mail address from you! (seriously, when I saw a Shiki figure last year I thought about you, but I would’ve had to buy the whole set for like $100 US dollars)

    • Kyokai says:

Aww man, that was almost affordable compared to the one I salivated on, which released after the Epilogue. It was around $300 and I went >< over it. I'm still trying to make this year's AFA so let's see if I can get my hands on some good merch. Shiki and Nyanko-sensei are on top list. Btw, Animazement to happen in May again this year?

  10. anaaga says:

    Shit, I got caught.

  11. Foshizzel says:

    Awesome-row! Nice answers!

#1- HELL YES! Luffy is soooo fun to watch every week! He always does something random and hilarious and when he is in any fight you can always expect him to be a badass.

#2- Nice choice as well! I was surprised you didn’t choose Nami from One Piece, but your choice works!

#49- LOLOOOOLOL Anaaga and zabob so moe~

    • Jrow says:

Gear Second and Third are cool, but I almost thought about having Haki as my Superpower. Attacking people with your own will is pretty damn bamf!

Nami’s a Top 5 babe for sure along with Utena, Senjougahara, Revy and Yoko! She’s still got her treasure loving ways, but she’s cooled down some in New World. I don’t know if I told you yet, but I got this figure of Nami-swan~

Such a moe couple~ Hope I’m not causing a rift in their relationship! Figured they’d be cool with a third wheel involved. XD

  12. Karakuri says:

#1- I’m making good on that resolution to watch One Piece and I can now totally see where you’re coming from with all of the Luffy love. Him in the Arlong arc, man. Totally changed my opinion of his character for the better.

#4- I have to say, Ali Project’s stuff was way better pre-2009. It’s nice to know that not all people hate them though!

    #41- Σ(゚Д゚|||) YOU WEAR GLASSES?!

    #49- LMAO Metanorn pimp indeed

    • Jrow says:

Arlong Park was Luffy’s coming-out party in terms of being a badass. When he gives Nami his hat is such a strong moment in the series.

I mentioned to OC earlier on my MetaVerse line about Ali Project, which is why I think most people don’t like them. They certainly have better songs than that 90-second skip one in Another.

Yup! I don’t think I have pictures of me on FB or G+ with them on. I’m another member of your megane armada!

I like this title more than “MetaVerse Editor”, cuz I be pimpin. Let’s see about getting that changed for the Spring season!

  13. Hawthorne says:

I felt really classy listening to that song as I read. XD

#16: However much longer it will be, I hope anime continues to bring you enjoyment! Just from reading your responses I can tell it’s something you’ve put a lot of time into and are very knowledgeable about.

#30: Sometimes I think they’re even worse then tsunderes because there’s lots of unwanted love to give, and very little love in return, and lots of scratching …

    #39: I lol’d … even though I like K-ON. XD

    • Jrow says:

I had a lot of choices to choose from considering the 5-disc box collection. N.Y. Rush seemed to be a good call.

Thanks Hawt. With my two internet families (Meta a big party, Anivision a smaller group of bros) keeping me engaged, it’ll surely keep on being fun as long as it lasts. 🙂

Cats look so cute and cuddely in pictures. Why you scratch, kitteh! xD

I came into K-On! not being familiar with moe moe fun time and was like, boy this is not for me. The songs in the show I’m not a fan of, but wow those Yoko Hikasa ending themes are dynamite!

  14. Joojoobees says:

I love Yoko Kanno’s stuff. Cowboy BeBop was amazing, and I am really looking forward to “Kid’s on the Slope” (Sakamichi no Apollon).

    • Jrow says:

That’s what has me most excited about Apollon. The josei stuff should be good, but the jazz music theme of the show is what I’m interested in most.

  15. Moni Chan says:

    Do you regret anything?

    Watching K-On!

    Me: *instant death*

    • Kyokai says:

Moni-chan, you gotta understand, it’s not everyone’s cup of tea and I do understand. :3

    • Jrow says:

Not only is it not my cup of tea, it makes me hate tea. 😛

I tease about it long after watching the series. People like their moe and I like my ecchi. We try to watch anime healthily with dramas and such, but sometimes we like having some junk food shows to watch.

If you somehow had the ability to manipulate an anime’s story, would you do it, which anime and in what way would you see fit? Would you put your favorite character or creature in a story where it doesn’t belong?

    • Jrow says:

I would manipulate Guilty Crown. I would remove the Lost Christmas plot device and make Shu and company fight alien life forms.

For fun, yeah, I’d move a character around. How about Shu in One Piece? How about the voids he could pull out of all the devil fruit eaters?
