Mouretsu Pirates – 08

Marika-“Are we there yet? Huh? Are we?!”                Misa-“We haven’t even left the school yet! STOP ASKING!”

Captain Marika and her crew is starting to become a great team so far. I’m loving the character interaction along with a strange princess girl tagging along. Anyway it is time to find out if this new character adds anything special to the story. Enjoy the review everyone.

Plot this week follows princess Gruier Serenity as she meets the crew of the Bentenmaru, attends school and joins Captain Marika on her first pirate adventure.

Marika-“Whoa! I can totally hear voices in my head…”                   Misa-“….Yes there are voices in your head, alright.”

The episode starts off with Marika talking to the strange stowaway trying to find out who they are. However, the stowaway does not believe that Marika is the acting captain for the Bentenmaru, until Coorie shares some official information about Marika becoming the captain and the stowaway agrees to reveal her identity. The crew of the Bentenmaru all gasp when they find out who this person is! She is Princess Gruier Serenity and apparently she is someone very important. Marika on the other hand has no idea who this princess is; thankfully, Misa gives some info to the captain about their new friend.

Gruier-“Yes, I am a space prince!”                  Kane-“OH…MY…GOD…MY…HEART! HNNGGGG.”

Marika-“So which one of my crew do you want to take home?”                 Gruier-“Hmm the robot! Yes.”

Once Marika learns about Gruier, she introduces her to the crew. Shortly after that Hyakume and Coorie discover that Gruier is currently being reported as missing, but Gruier swears she is only looking for help from the Bentenmaru because she wants to find a mysterious ghost ship. Honestly, I think the princess just wants to go on a space adventures or wants to become an actual space pirate. After learning about this ghost ship, Marika agrees to help and Gruier goes to school… What is this, Guilty Crown? HOORAY SCHOOL! Anyway, she instantly becomes super popular and gains a million new twitter followers…

Gruier-“I really like puppies, rainbows, and Sailor Moon cosplay.”

Marika-“I had a dream where I met a rubber pirate that wanted to be a king! How silly…”

Marika-“Alright! Go inside and start punching people randomly.”                           Mami-“Aye aye, captain!”

Gruier-“Yes, follow me @MoeSpacePrincess! I DEMAND it!”                       Mami-“Whoaaaa, no fair!”

The following day Misa gets a mission and rushes out of school and towards the airport. Yes, Misa still is a reckless driver…and almost runs Kane over! That whole scene was full of derp, like how did Kane make that jump? I blame anime physics. Anyway, Kane was trying his best to avoid a fangirl aka Gruier who jumps in the car to tag along for a wild ride to the airport that left her and Marika completely dazed. On the way to the Bentenmaru, Marika goes over the mission with Gruier as they chat about a military ship headed from the Serenity system.

Ririka-“Bring your friends over! We can have a drinking party.”                    Marika-“Hey! That is our special party stuff…”

No one is safe with Misa behind the wheel.

Marika-“Why is the ship leaning so much.”                               Kane-“I was bored, figured I’d do a barrel roll.”

This mystery ship is bringing important information about the ghost ship or “golden” ghost ship from the royal palace. Wait a second, couldn’t they just email that info to the Bentenmaru? Hyakume sees more than one ship headed for them and wonders about the extra ships because they are currently engaged in combat, which means the crew must prepare for possible live combat. Gruier watches the monitors as the Serenity ship arrives damaged…this golden ghost ship must have treasure, right? Before the Bentenmaru can help this damaged ship, multiple ships arrive and quickly identify themselves as Serenity Defense force ships. The episode ends with the crew waiting for official orders from Captain Marika.

Chiaki move aside! Gruier x Marika ftw.

Marika-“Uh! WALK THE PLANK! LET’S GET SOME BOOTY!”           Misa-“Tell the voices in your head to keep it down please.”

Extra fun pirate adventures

Gangster Marika is so cool!

They were foaming at the mouth when Kane taught swim class.

Marika-“Bitches don’t know about my pirate hat.”

Yeah! Seriously she doesn’t want to raid you today… Baka!

End thoughts

Alright this was a really dull episode this week and the ending left us with another cliffhanger! What was that!? I was so prepared for an epic battle; however I do see a repeating pattern with Mouretsu Pirates and that pattern is basically give the viewer an exciting episode and do a follow up episode ending on a cliffhanger. Sure there are lots of anime out there that do this *cough* every shounen series ever *cough* I know every episode can’t be always full of action with stuff blowing up all the time, after all they have to give us twenty-six episodes. So enough about that and let me get into the fun parts of this episode.

Now that super moe Princess Gruier… I was really expecting her to be a hardcore tsundere girl…thankfully she’s polite and very friendly. She even made that cyborg stop and stare ahaha, I wonder if he was blushing? And Kane was like whaaat?! Maybe he likes them that young… He does work with a lot of underage girls as a teacher. So, it appears Gruier has a thing for pirates with her eyeballing captain Marika’s outfit. Though, I wonder what she is hiding? Maybe she wants to run away from her royal life and go on some grand pirate adventures?

Anyway, what do you think is on that golden ghost ship? Maybe it is filled with treasures? Or maybe it has some family secret that Gruier is trying to protect and hide? Either way I hope to find out soon…but knowing this series, they might spend a whole episode chatting about it first. So Marika, what kind of plan will you throw at the crew? I am really excited to see what she would come up with on the fly. I noticed the preview has the Odette II crew making an appearance and Chiaki as well. So, is it time for Marika to call in some favors from Jenny and possibly Chiaki? Overall the story is getting somewhere and finally we can watch Marika in action soon.

Preview

To OH MA SHOE! Seriously the dude really needs one.

Golden ghost ship found? What is inside…I hope it’s not full of space candy.

About

Is huge anime fan from Florida! who loves to watch anime and also enjoys drawing and collecting pictures, my favorite genre of anime has to be Mecha, there is just something awesome about giant robots beating the crap out of each other! There is at least one good reason to hand deliver sensitive information rather than send it by radio or Internet–it can be intercepted or hacked when broadcast. And if hand carried the messanger can hopefully destroy it if he’s intercepted.

So the princess wants the Bentenmaru to help her find a golden ghost ship? Oh, yes! Every pirate ship needs to hunt for a golden galleon, whether the galleon sails the Seven Seas or the Starry Seas.

Looks like the crew of the Odette II is returning. Hurrah!

So we’ve got royal intrigue, hopefully a real space battle, a hunt for a possible treasure ship and the Odette II’s girls returning all coming up. This anime just keeps getting better and better!

    • HannoX says:

Oh, and I’ve read that Lynn is supposed to be a lesbian in love with Jenny. So will there be some implied yuri romance in the future?

Like I said above, this anime just keeps getting better and better!

    • Joojoobees says:

Yeah, the safest way to get a message from Alice to Bob is to hand deliver it via trusted carrier. This protects against eavesdropping, obstruction of transmission, and modification of the data.

      • Rakuen says:

The safest would be transferring it by carrier where Alice and Bob both have one time pads, but that’s also the least feasible because Alice and Bob are required to have met at some point. Unless this is all planned by her family and the Princess already has the cypher…

      • akagami says:

I had to look up on wiki who Lynn was. I can’t remember the names of wallpaper-flower-characters. Couldn’t find any Alice and Bob though, unless you’re just picking random names as an example?

      • Foshizzel says:

Yarrrr! Pirate hackers in that universe are super pro.

    • Foshizzel says:

Ahahah yes I did not think about all the super hackers in this universe…basically any grandma/brother/sister are pro hackers! And in anime you never mess up <3

Yes! Ghost ships in spaceeeeeeee! I can't wait to see what is inside.

I know right? I am excited to see the crew of the Odette II again, but I am excited to see Jenny and Lynn.

Indeed better and better every week.

So the Princess is either a heavy Sailor Moon shout-out or is a mild reference to Firefly. Both work, and I willingly accept either reference.

    • Bob from Accounting says:

I don’t think the Firefly was intentional, but I have to say that WAS what I kept thinking of when everyone was on the ship going on about Serenity this and Serenity that.

    • HannoX says:

Anime News Network yesterday posted that Bodacious Space Pirate anime’s Princess Serenity is a deliberate homage to Sailor Moon’s Princess Serenity. Apparently in the original light novels she had a different hair color and style.

      • BlackBriar says:

That’s easy to believe because I felt that “Princess Gruier Serenity” was taken from Sailor Moon’s Princess Serenity the moment I heard her name. Ahh, the nostalgia.

      • Foshizzel says:

Ohhhh thanks for the info HannoX! I was thinking the princess was a shout out for Sailor Moon fans ;D

  3. skylion says:

This was a great weekend for loli-sama! And of the blonde variety! All we need now is for Arisa from Rinne to keep going with that Madoka molestation and we can have another Seikon no Qwaser in the works.

But onto the Sailor Moon/Firefly shout-outs. This is what kick starts the show? Much like Marika, I am totally in. And the cliffhangers are fun!

    • Foshizzel says:

Yeah Lagrange and Mouretsu both have blond loli’s and Nisemonogatari! This is a great season for blondes xD

True sometimes the cliffhanger episodes are actually kind of funny and this new princess character is kind of fun <3

      • skylion says:

Kinda makes me want a Lotte’s Toy II, and the next installment of Kodomo no Jikan.

Serenity is a captivating character in many senses, not just the one way I have over-stated. She has comportment, dignity, and a sense of purpose. These are not qualities that exist on their own, but ones that are earned. If she was used to getting her way all the time, then we might see her exhibit tsundere qualities.

No. This lass has a posse. She has earned respect. And the Bentenmaru is an addition to that posse. I can feel it in my bones that she is at the center of whatever political break-up going on in her house. She might not be aware of all the details, but she knows so much more than she lets our pirate crew, and in so, us the audience, know.

I’m looking very forward to seeing how this plays out. If they take the same care with politics, world building, and character development, we could be seeing all that going up a level by next episode.

        • Foshizzel says:

Ahahaha yeah more Lotte’s Toy! That was a sad sad anime it scared so many people away on the “story” I don’t think I have seen Kodomo no Jikan before.

True if Serenity was used to being waited on 24/7 I am sure she would show her Tsundere ways really fast! I could see her bossing the Bentenmaru crew around while throwing things at them.

Agreed! There is something she is hiding from Marika and the crew and it probably is connected to the Golden Ghost ship…

Yeah same here I can’t wait to see how things play out with everything.

          • skylion says:

I’m willing to let the Golden Ghost ship remain in it’s package for now. After all, there are plot coupons to be found, achieved and cashed in. Yes, this is troperific, but I am very anxious to see how this production handles this trope. Eight episodes in they haven’t gone wrong for me yet.

Like Firefly, you either get this show or you don’t.

  4. Myst says:

Those screenshot comments… just priceless 😀

  5. tatsuya says:

after seeing all those comment ..i don’t know what to type and make comment ~~

  6. Rakuen says:

    What’s on the golden ship?

    The plot. Duh!

  7. akagami says:

I don’t know, I rather enjoyed this episode (at least, much more than episode 2-7).

Wasn’t sure if I interpreted the last scene correctly… the Serenity ship with the info is being attached by friendlies? So internal strife?

    • Foshizzel says:

      Ahh good good!

It appears they are having an internal war or something like that maybe this Golden Ghost ship carries a valuable thing from the Serenity family? Either way there is some sneaky stuff going on.

      • HannoX says:

Whatever it is on the Golden Ghost Ship may be the cause of the apparent strife in the royal family or it may settle the strife. Or it could be what Alfred Hitchcock (and film makers since) called the MacGuffin.

Whatever it is, I want to know! So whatever else it is, it’s a hook to get we the audience to keep on watching.

        • Foshizzel says:

Indeed! What if there was a smaller ship inside that ship? LOL Just kidding…but either way it has the fans waiting <3

  8. Ying says:

Lol the captions under the screenshots were funny XD

I liked bits and parts of this episode. Mostly I liked the parts with the crew (and Misa’s driving) while I wished Marika would just quit school because it’s usually boring.

I’m looking forward to seeing Ririchiyo in action (please let that be why she is in the preview). I’m also hoping the princess does not become a permanent fixture of the crew after this arc is over. Don’t get me wrong I liked her, but I hate little kids tagging along on these kinds of show. They usually get in the way or are just there to be cute, and provide a little sister/brother connection with the MC.

    • Foshizzel says:

Hahaha I do enjoy doing that part of reviews <3

Oh yes Misa's driving and that parts with the crew are always the best parts! One piece does this well too every crew member adds to the hilarious events.

True I think the princess is going to eventually leave the Bentenmaru or become a pirate herself!? She was watching Marika...I don't really see this child character being annoying or clingy towards Marika she appears to be quite mature.

  9. BlackBriar says:

Moretsu Pirates has a pretty good episode here that advances the story without making it seem like it’s dragging its feet.

The introduction of Gruier (Which I find is a strange name for a girl, much less a princess) is pretty well handled and she seems like an interesting superficial character that we won’t know well but may have a bigger role down the line.

The interesting parts to watch is how Marika handles the situation when they discover who she is and what’s at stake (based on the preview) and how the crew works the situation on her orders to get things accomplished. The crew is really coming together well as Marika gets familiar with things and this bears it out nicely.

The parking lot incident between Misa and Kane. If that ended badly, it would have been considered negligent homicide because of Misa’s crazy driving. How did he get in without a scratch and where did she get her license?

The way I see things going, this anime may be more than 13 episodes and might follow Fate/Zero and Rinne no Lagrange in being cut halfway through.

    • Foshizzel says:

It certainly has plenty of ups and downs! Just when you feel bored they throw something at you to wake you up, but they do have to stretch episodes out for this 26 epi series.

Ahaha yeah same Gruier is a odd name for a princess…right! I can see Marika getting all buddy buddy with the princess I am sure that will help things down the road.

The crew of the Bentenmaru are so much fun to watch if you watch One piece or even read it you can see the similarities between crews ie how each member interacts with each other and along with the captain.

Misa! So crazy and insane and her driving skill is dangerous! I died laughing with Gruier and Marika’s reaction to the wild ride.

Right! You are in luck Mouretsu is 26 and I don’t think it will take a break like Fate/Zero and Lagrange.

  10. Gecko says:

I was expecting the princess to be a hardcore tsundere as well! But it looks like they went for the “polite princess” instead…
And I personally hoping for more action as well.
As for the rest of the episode, really, nothing happened…

    • Foshizzel says:

Blonde+Loli = Tsundere to me always and forever! I was happy she was polite and nice to everyone.

      Yes…sad but true.
