Ano Natsu de Matteru – 05

Red, or blue?

The previous episode of Ano Natsu was amazing, and I feel like I’m finally getting into the series! The end bit really left me curious and I’ve been looking forward to this all week. I’m still rooting for you, Kanna!

When you wake up in the morning what’s the first thing you see? Is it a red-headed alien girl doing your laundry? No? Oh … Anyway! This week’s episode starts off in the usual comical fashion with Kaito being “on the edge” about living with Ichika. A little later they sit at the table together and Kaito shows her his video camera. A wild Remon appears, followed by the rest of the gang, and she tells them it’s time they start filming.

While Kaito sets up the camera with Tetsurou, Remon shows up with the script. It’s not much of a script though because it was decided the lines would be improvised to fit the story she wrote. Did I mention she writes the story the morning of filming? Ichika, Kanna, and Miu arrive and Ichika is wearing a leather outfit with a nifty gun holder, which was provided by the cosplay club. Lemon reveals the story, a romance about an alien girl who meets an average boy. (Sounds familiar, right?) Tetsurou steps up to play the role of the boy, as Kaito will be busy with filming.

The first scene starts with the alien girl (Ichika) arriving on Earth and spouting some, as pointed out by Kanna, pretty realistic lines. The boy (Tetsurou) appears and reveals himself to be a member of the Men in Black with some cool shades. But no worries, the alien girl’s gun comes in handy dealing with him. (As you can see, the pacing of this film is quite fast …)

Directing is srs bsns.

Killing the main character in the first scene, what is this!?

The group takes a break and Kaito compliments Ichika on her improvisation. Meanwhile Miu gives Remon a much deserved back massage as she considers the new MiB plot. Kaito tells Ichika that there’s a lake nearby that may be the place she was looking for, but it turns out that’s not the right location. Kanna watches on as the two playfully talk, but Tetsurou interrupts her with some teasing. She asks him if he knows about her feelings for Kaito and he says yes. Kanna asks if he’ll be rooting for her, and of course he also says yes to that. She then asks him who he likes,  but all he can say is “That won’t be possible.” Miu hears this and becomes a bit flustered.

Lemon brings in a new cast member, Rinon, to act as the alien ship’s terminal. Ichika and Kaito seem surprised, but everyone else seems pretty indifferent … aren’t they even the slightest bit curious about Rinon’s strange form? Scene two of the films picks up with Tetsurou confronting Ichika, only to be shot again, but this time by Rinon. Scene three introduces a new character played by Kaito, who tells the alien girl he can stay with her. (Boy-meets-alien girl show inside a boy-meets-alien girl show with the same alien girl playing the alien girl and the same boy playing the boy … Rinception!)

It’s your friendly neighborhood Rinon!

While Ichika changes out of her costume Kanna asks some vague questions about the alien girl’s role and how she wants the story to play out between her and the boy. Ichika says she wants them to be happy. Later that night Ichika asks Kaito a similar question regarding the characters, only this time about how he thinks the boy will react if the alien girl reveals she’s from another planet. He seems very optimistic about the idea, saying the boy would want to go to outer space. She follows up with a few more questions, which are obviously not just about the film.

Kanna calls up Miu to remind her there’s no filming because of the rain and then has a flashback to yesterday where she watches as Ichika and Kaito have a friendly conversation revealing their growing closeness. She decides to visit Kaito with the excuse that her mom made some food. Ichika calls for help in the background because there’s a bad leak. Miu tries to call back Kanna, but obviously she’s not there. The three eat lunch together and share some conversation. In the end Kanna asks Ichika when she plans on leaving.

Realizing the rudeness of her comment she leaves embarrassed back into the rain with her panda umbrella. (I want one!!) Miu had called Tetsurou after she found out Kanna wasn’t home and he ends up meeting her out in the rain on her way home. They take refuge at a bus stop and she tells him about her jealous feelings towards Ichika. In the end Kanna decides to go back to being her “usual self”.

Tetsurou goes over to Kaito’s house and sneaks in through the back. Rinon detects his arrival and Ichika goes to investigate. Tetsurou surprises Kaito when he reveals that Kanna’s is in love with him, and outside the room Ichika hears it all.

And the drama begins!

Preview: Beach episode!! I’m sure we all saw it coming at some point.

If you’ve been worried about the somewhat standstill status of the relationships involved in Ano Natsu, have no fear, Remon is here! I have no idea who that mischievous loli is anymore, or how she seems to know EVERYTHING. Whatever her source of information is we should be thankful because she’s really pushing things along. For the rest of the group the film project might just be a fun summer activity, but I have to wonder if there’s a deeper meaning behind her story’s plot. “Alien girl meets boy”, coincidence? I think not. She even knew about Rinon being the ship’s terminal!  (Oh, and I wonder why nobody finds Rinon even the slightest bit strange …)

Kanna was so lovable this week, but unfortunately she’s still not taking that much initiative towards showing her true feelings for Kaito. Her jealousy towards Ichika is obvious, but who wouldn’t be when the person you like is living and getting along with some other attractive person? Her comment towards Ichika towards the end about when she’s leaving came off as brash and a little rude, but it seemed like more of an impulse than an intentionally rude remark. Knowing Kaito he probably took nothing from it, considering he can be pretty oblivious.

The person I feel worst about though is Tetsurou. Most of the time in anime it’s the female childhood friend getting the cold shoulder, but that seems to be the opposite when it comes to Tetsurou and Kanna. It’s not to say that Kanna doesn’t love him, but not in the same way she loves Kaito, she even called Tetsurou a “little brother”. It’s cute that he wants to help Kanna with her relationship “issues”, but I wish he’d stop being a coward and confess his OWN feelings! By the way, does anyone else think telling Kaito about Kanna’s feelings was a bit … two-sided of Tetsurou?

I wasn’t paying too much attention to Ichika this episode since I was pretty enthralled by everyone else, but I’m curious about how long it’ll take before she comes clean (or is forced to come clean) about being an alien. From what we’ve seen Kaito’s “ailment” can hit at any random time, so if it happens in public … yeah. Anyway, now that she knows Kanna is in love with Kaito I’m interested in whether or not she’ll try to create more distance between herself and him. More interesting is what Kaito will do, since now he’s faced with a problem.

Beach episode next week! From the series I’ve seen the past couple seasons, beach episodes seem to be getting less and less trivial (which is a good thing most of the time), and in a rom-com there are so many possibilities for developing the relationships between the characters. Hopefully it won’t disappoint, after all, it’s the “unforgettable summer” and what’s more summer-y than the beach!?

Grr, Lemon teases Ichika (and us!) too much. She has to be someone either really important or just really perceptive because her ‘plot’ is just too much of a coincidence to be such. Feels like she’s a troll in Ano Natsu with her laugh, huhuhuhuhu
Tanigawa’s finally starting to crack, which is good because THIS MEANS DRAMA! 😀 Definitely more impulsive than intentional with what she said, I mean, not being sexist, but when Girl A is interfered by Girl B to get Boy A, when Girl A knew Boy A for so long beforehand…I think it’s natural to have a bit of tension between the Girls.
As for Boy A, that tension is compounded because Boy B chasing Girl A reveals Girl A’s bombshell secret, whilst Girl B is eavesdropping.

Rant ending, the drama will continue next week with a beach episode, yay!

    • Hawthorne says:

Now that Girl B and Boy A know that Girl A likes Boy A (thanks to Boy B), I’m wondering how Boy A will handle it all, especially since both Girl A and Girl B seem to be very emotional when it comes to love. I can’t help feeling though that Boy A won’t confront the matter and might try going on as if everything is normal.

And then there’s Girl L screwing with them all, huhuhu. XD

That was confusing to write. But anyway, it seems like you’re looking forward to the drama just as much as I am!

Is Tetsuyo playing two-sides. Heck yeah. He gets something tangible either way. Will it play out badly? It may, thou we have a good audience relationship with these guys and girls, they still have some depths we don’t know of.

My first reaction was like everyone’s. Did not see it coming.

But, as I’ve been commenting on seventhstyle. I have very much fallen for Kanna as a character. Beautiful in a way that you have to look at again, and pretty darn smart. She isn’t playing any angle but one. Her and Miu are some of the best characters to come along in quite awhile.

I’m anxious to see Ichika’s full reaction to all of this.

    • Hawthorne says:

Another Miu fan? Woo! She’s only had minor parts so far compared to everyone else, but for some reason I can’t help but want to root for her, and Kanna too! I love romances because we can get so connected with the characters and their personal lives.

I’m anticipating her reaction too, hopefully next week brings some more drama! 😀

  3. BlackBriar says:

Ahh, that demon loli Lemon is still roaming free. Her scripts are frighteningly to the point. It’s as if she really knows about Ichika and the situation between her and Kaito.

Damn, Ichika looks good in black leather. She should wear that suit more often. I wonder just when are they going to get to the part about her being an alien. So it’s been nothing but Slice of life and School Life stuff.

    • Hawthorne says:

“Demon loli”, I like the sound of that. XD I’ve been reading some speculation that Remon/Lemon might be an alien herself. Somehow that sounds pretty plausible.

The alien stuff does seem to be taking a backseat to the romance side of things lately. Depending on your tastes that could be a good thing! But I’m sure it’ll be more important later on. ^^

  4. tatsuya says:

yes …,you done it again Hawthorne..I must say the way you put this word make the anime look’s fun to watch —
wait , I’m not saying that this episode is lame ,well I like the part when Tetsurou interrupts .It new

    • Hawthorne says:

I hope it not only looks fun to watch, but is fun to actually watch too! XD I really liked that part as well, it was a definite “what just happened” kind of moment and it really took me aback. I wasn’t expecting that at all from Tetsurou!

  5. Foshizzel says:

Rooting for Kanna and Tetsuyo! GO TEAM BLUE HAIR! Ahahaha they do look more like siblings cause of similar hair color…I thought they were related before actually watching based on pictures xD

But ya that ending with Tetsuyo was so sneaky! I was like DAMN YOU! WHAT THE HELL?! Ah well…that is how he rolls I guess? Then again maybe he is tired of not being able to confess to Kanna so he is trying to cause some drama.

YAY! BEACH EPISODE next time! I assume this is going to be Lemon teasing everyone xD

    • Hawthorne says:

Team blue all the way! XD At this point I’m not so much rooting for Kanna to be with any one person, it’s more like rooting for her happiness in general. (My heart almost broke when she was crying in the rain. -_-‘)

That’s what I was thinking too, it seems like he wanted to stir the pot to push things forward since Kaito is pretty passive. Now he’ll be forced to decide on his feelings, and if he picks Ichika that leaves Kanna open for dating. If he chooses Kanna than he can just go with Miu, who already likes him anyway. (He’s kind of a genius actually lol)

  6. Joojoobees says:

Lemon is such a genius. “In the Hong Kong style”! I would definitely back a film if she was the auteur in charge of making it. She seems endlessly able to roll with the situation, and thus always will come out on top.

    • Hawthorne says:

Lemon original films? ooo I’d definitely watch! 😀 I wonder if she’d get sued for the Men in Black parts though …

  7. anaaga says:

I just knew it. I knew Tetsurou was going to do something lame like this.
I prefer Tetsurou trying to make Kanna and Kaitou closer indirectly instead of such blunt statement. That will make everything awkward. Wait, I think everything is awkward already. C’mon Tetsurou, be smart like Lemon!

My sixth sense is telling me that this will be dramatic and not in a good way. Ugh.

    • Hawthorne says:

It was pretty lame wasn’t it, I can’t believe he went behind Kanna’s back like that. And smarter than Lemon? I don’t think anyone will ever achieve that level of brilliance. XD

Bad drama? Ahhhh I hope not! I have such high hopes for this show. D:

      • Rakuen says:

On the other hand, the bluntness was also a bit refreshing, as was inverting the “normal” “A tells B he/she likes C too” situation.
