Sixth in line:Supporting Female Character nominations for 2011. Vote Away~
How long can a three day vacation be? I mean, c’mon, were you expecting me to be back so soon but I somehow am and joining in with the team to look over the year-ender nominations. For the category, these are the under appreciated females who don’t get up to par yet are very important for the plot. Enjoy our meanderings to highlight these animu females.
Me, in the female section? And supporting even? What is this, the world must be ending! I barely glance at them when it comes to female characters! Don’t worry, I do take notice of some female characters in anime. They are the chosen ones who managed to perk my interest. And hey, female supporting characters are pretty important too. Anime would be dull with main characters only.
Ah, the female support category. While the main girls are enjoying the lights and the fame, there are so many great gems of female support characters, one that I’d even go as far to call my #1 character of the year.
Much like the guys out there the girls also require their own side kick characters, maybe you need a moe girl to throw the guys off of you? Maybe you need a skilled fighter to back you up in the heat of battle!? Either way you decide to go every girl needs a strong partner or a adorable side kick to make their lives easier.
Hope everyone had a good New Years. So we are continuing on with the Year-Ender event after some good R&R from the holidays. Up to bat is Supporting Female Characters. Wow, there’s a lot to choose from and a lot that probably went by unnoticed. I had to drag in some other Meta members for this one to give these supporting female characters the spotlight that they deserve.
As an update, so far the following Year-Ender posts are out and voting is still open:
The list is in no particular order. So check out these supporting chicks and vote for the best~!
[ 01 ] [ Hasegawa Kobato ] Boku wa Tomodachi ga Sukunai
Ku ku ku! These words quickly became a new catchphrase for any fan of Kobato. To add some extra wow to this character they went and gave her a cute voice supplied by the one and only Kana Hanazawa! Kobato enjoys cosplaying as her favorite vampire girl, and she will fight anyone who tries to take Kodaka from her. You can always find Kobato battling Maria weekly to keep her away from her An-chan. However, if you throw Sena into things you can expect to find Kobato hiding behind her brother using him as a shield just to get away from Sena’s touch.
Ah, love. You can do anything for the sake of love. Keito here is a living proof of the first statement. From stripping at night to trying to destroy the world, all for the sake of Sugata. I’ll admit, the attention she gives Sugata is a little bit extreme. But hey, her dedication is definitely a plus. And she saved a main character too! Just give her the title Savior of the Year already!
Where would we be without the over the top character Sanae to “hunt” her favorite prey? Her cute little Ika Musume! All Sanae wants out of her unique life is to tightly hug her squid girl all day and do a few other things with her. Whenever Sanae is around she has one thing on her mind; however, every time she tries to get Ika, she runs away or beats Sanae down with her powerful tentacles. Then again Sanae has a huge M side to her because deep down she really enjoys getting a beat down from the tentacles by Ika.
[ 04 ] [ Haqua du Lot Herminium ] Kami Nomi zo Shiru Sekai II
With Elsie and Keima trudging along catching souls, Haqua was a very welcome addition to the cast as a girl the was held in high regard, but actually was very bad at catching souls. Her bit of time was Keima was nice, and she also was a great catalyst for making Elsie a better character, imo.
VA [ Hayami Saori ]
[ 05 ] [ Kamiki Izumo ] Ao no Exorcist
Purple twin tails: check, tsundere attitude: check and thigh high socks: check. Right there you have three things every series needs rolled into one character! Izumo is a strange girl when we first get the chance to meet her as she comes off as a complete bitch especially towards Shiemi, but after all the drama and the battles she changes into a better and less bitchy girl.
She is the perfect representation of us female students in high school. It’s such a wonder how she did not break down and succumb to depression like most female high school students. From peer pressure to fashion, she was flawless at managing them. What can you ask more from her? She’s great the way she is. She has a fabulous sense of fashion too.
VA [ Hirano Aya ]
[ 07 ] [ Takami Minatsuki ] Deadman Wonderland
At first glance you would think Minatsuki was the usual sweet moe girl. If you base that off her looks alone you would be correct. Until she opens her mouth and suddenly you hear the mouth of a sailor! She will call you everything dirty and nasty in the book. If she doesn’t kill you with her words, she will definitely kill you with her bloody hair in a heartbeat.
Mami, oh she’s a really nice Mahou Shoujou and by far I’m sure everyone loves her guns… rifles. This girl kicked butt against those monsters and she cares more for others than herself. Sakura is awesome for those tsundere moe lovers, she’s got her own agendas but once you have her on your side, she’s got your back. Sayaka is the best friend type, caring for others and she sacrifices her normal life for her… crush.. I mean to heal his hand.
VA [ Kitamura Eri ] VA [ Mizhashi Kaori ]
VA [ Nonaka Ai ]
[ 09 ] [ Natsume Masako ] Mawaru Penguindrum
The first thing I ever noticed when I saw Masako was that drill hair of hers which looked amazing to me. Besides her fantastic hair, she always has that one line that makes her stand out: “Gosh, I must crush them soon.” This character also has a huge secret connection to one of the main guys, but you need to watch the series for yourself to find out.
[ 10 ] [ Satou Jennifer ] [C]: The Money of Soul and Possibility Control
I wasn’t sure what to think of [C] after 2 episodes, but when episode 3 was told thru a narrative from Jennifer’s perspective as an agent investigating the Financial District is when I started to take more interest in the world the series had built. Her english isn’t anywhere near as good as her superior, but her helping pushing Yoga toward the end was key for him.
Our bishoujo in Natsume Yuujinchou who also happens to have a little of youkai talent, Taki’s world was changed in a good way when Natsume helped her solve her first youkai problem. Her silent understanding of Natsume’s situation and personality proves that she is a good friend that Natsume need, making her worth it to be nominated.
VA [ Satou Rina ]
[ 12 ] [ Sakamachi Kureha ] Mayo Chiki
Everyone needs a cute little sister character! Kureha is one of those cute siblings but with a very aggressive side to her. I would avoid this girl at all costs, unless you like having to wrestle her every day! Just make sure you do not forget her birthday…or you will suffer too much.
[ 13 ] [ Misaka Mikoto ] Toaru Majutsu no Index II
Most people are familiar with Misaka as a main in Railgun! But she is a more of a side character in the Index universe. Season two puts some more focus on the whole Touma x Misaka relationship. Near the end Misaka joined forces with Touma as she helped deal with a new threat to academy city. Unknown to her, she was helping out Accelerator too.
The best support you can get when you need someone to watch your back in the world of mages and servants. Maiya may not be a mage, but she sure knows how to use a gun and that knife. Yeah she gets her but kicked by Kirei, but still she can hold her own pretty well. This girl was trained to be a soldier, she’s a professional cold assassin and works under the best.
Sometimes I think that Rikuo won’t be that awesome without her. I love how she’s a part of Rikuo’s life even when he was a toddler. Babysitter, bodyguard, maid, WEAPON – she’s basically everything, just for Rikuo. Her unwavering loyalty for him is something that I admire and if you’ve read the manga, did you read her declaration to Kana? DAMN!
When you see her as a babealicious hero in the beginning, you probably didn’t think she’d be an innocent 16-year old girl, right? She was a cool hero with one of, if not the lamest catchphrase, but her crush on Kotetsu was very adoring of her character.
Makina is not afraid to kick some serious ass in the prison, and she has a unique nickname more for her bust line or G-Cups… Yeah those things will get you killed if you stare at them. But I known her for her tough as nails attitude as she does not take crap from anyone. In the manga she does some secret behind the scenes stuff to backstab a few of the higher ups. So do not cross her unless you want a quick death sentence.
VA [ Honda Takako ]
[ 19 ] [ Oginome Ringo ] Mawaru Penguindrum
At the beginning of Penguindrum, it almost felt like it was the Ringo Oginome show with how much focus the story of her and her diary had. When Ringo was a diary-following freak, she was fascinating to watch as she did what she could to rationalize the events of her diary. When she lost the diary, her character went through this really unique transformation from being the show’s craziest girl to the most human and caring. Ringo may not only be my favorite support character, but maybe my favorite overall of 2011.
Penguin #3 and Esmeralda – Kyo: How can we forget them? They were the best penguins that an anime series ever saw!
Ming Li Huang (Kamisama no Memochou) – Zabo: MASTER~ It takes a special kind of woman to be a total badass and run a ramen/icecream shop while at it. And this lady definitely fits the bill.
Yuina (Hanasaku Iroha) – Fosh: Always happy and full of cheer leaving me to ask what does she smoke? Either way this unique air head will always stand out as “different than most” types of girls in Hanasaku Iroha.
Isana (Yumekui Merry) – Fosh: She might not be a skilled fighter but she has several friends willing to back her up.
Sarashina Chizuru – Kyo: Hourou Musuko got very less ‘excitement’, most of which was provided by Chizuru. Her loud awesomeness was well, awesome.
Dai sensei (Kore Wa zombie desu ka?) – Fosh: The famous magical girl teacher Ariel aka Dai sensei as Haruna calls her, without this brilliant scientist we would not have Haruna or any super flashy transformation scenes with Ayumu turning into a magical girl!
Ayano (Yuru Yuri) – Fosh: Every school themed anime has their “Ayano” You know the ones: the student council vice president character.
Chizuru/Ayane (KnT S2) – Ness: Because Kyokai said so~ (Kyo: Without them, Sawako would never come out of her scary mode >.>)
Chitose (Yuru Yuri) Fosh – Queen of epic nose bleeds! And perverted thoughts.
Shura (Ao No Exorcist) Fosh – Big boobs and a killer choice in clothing? Possibly a sibling of Yoko from TTGL? Dem shots…and top…
Misato (Nichijou) – Fosh: The famous gun-dere girl! She is always there to use weapons on you…
Edogawa Miho (Level E) – Ness: She’s clever, cute and isn’t afraid to step up to her daddy.
Q ( [C] ) – Fosh: Demon who loves to eat money! Ness would kill her.
Engi Threepiece (Yumekui Merry) – Fosh: Great fighter! With some bad ass swords, wish we saw more of her fight.
Kuroko (Toaru majutsu no index II) – Fosh: ONEE-SAMA!! Those words will always make me laugh every damn time…
Konoha (C3) – Kara: She’s the big breasted, kick ass onee-sama of the harem. What more do you people want?
As mentioned in previous posts, the characters that these animes were chosen from are featured in the Winter ’11 to Fall ’11 anime series. This does not include animes that will continue on into the Winter ’12 season that are 20+ episodes. As well, don’t forget to check out the other Year-Ender posts and vote for the best~!
