Happy Halloween Metanorn! We’re back with another porn critique, because even when it comes to …well, what you come to… we should have standards, dammit! So will this be a trick or a treat? Hmmm…Well, they won’t all be ero-guro, I promise, but continuing in the same vein this Halloween special is all about the notorious Bible Black. I expect more of you will be familiar with it than Overfiend, or have at least heard some of the disgusted whispers or inverted-cross wearing fans usually associated with it.

Brief History

Occultists regard sex as worship, we all know that. But to them sex exists outside of normal nature; it’s pretty much supernatural (they must have had some damn good bonks in their time). Some also believe that sex is God’s way of showcasing our relationship with him: stressing intamacy, unity and ultimately a divine experience that transends normal sensation. To quote: “When body, mind, and spirit are unified, when you direct your attention outward, you’ll experience life as a unified field of boundless, free flowing energy and knowledge. You’ll feel your identity as something greater than before, a presence that is everywhere, that is inside everything in the world.” Even if this involves Satan or other demons, which is almost always does. See, Satan isn’t so bad. He’s like the Satan in Ao no Exorcist, just misunderstood. Examples of sex as worship would be what Bible Black illustrates in gross detail; orgies employing all kinds of demons, drugs and various kinds of physical abuse. So, your average weekend in Glasgow, then.

Background

Milky Studio (I haven’t heard of them either) came along to answer all of your satanic prayers and brought us several hentai anime adaptations from 2001 through 2006. The first installment of Bible Black consisted of six episodes, then a two episode OVA called Origins (a prequel) came out to accompany it the following year. There was then a sequel, (which we’ll be looking at in this) called New Testament. Testament centers around our characters after a ten year time skip…because these kinds of sex obsessed women can only get better with age. Like you couldn’t park a caravan in their vaginas by now, sheesh. There is also a gaiden, which makes it sound far classier than it is, called Bible Black Only. It’s about the things you didn’t see during the series, so we can only assume that they were absolutely crucial.

Before we dive right into this sodomized religious backwash let me just sum up the original 6 episode series for those who haven’t seen it; it’s full title is actually Bible Black: La Noche de Walpurgis. And if any of you were unfortunate enough to suffer through Uragiri wa Boku no Namae wo Shitteiru you might remember they refered to a “Walpurgis Night”, too. It’s like a second Halloween celebrated 6 months later in Europe, but as you can imagine because of its spooky relation it’s embelished a lot in fiction and given it’s own connotations.

The tragically unsexy Taki Minase comes across a dark magic textbook one day when rumaging around in the school basement and naturally, because he is a horny, lonely pervert he uses it’s magic to go about forming a harem of sex slaves. Oh, come on, don’t tell me you wouldn’t do the same…! The school nurse, Reika Kitami, gets wind of this and having made a deal with Satan a dozen years prior to spare her life, is looking to get the book off Minase to fufill her own agenda. She needs a virgin to act as a vessel for her reincarnation, as the lifespan Satan afforded to her is running out, (she should just go talk to the Okamura bros, they know all about this shit). There is a Witchcraft Club at school which Kaori Saeki is the head of, and noticing Minase’s prowess in the magical field, convinces him to join.

Kitami, being the totally innappropriate minx she is, basically holds auditions to try and find the virgin she needs (you can imagine the questions), but does eventually find one. Poor Imari, you really don’t know what you’re in for, do you, honey? Ah, but there is molestation abound, as not only does Kitami stalk high school virgins for her satanistic rituals she also kidnaps art teachers and has her wicked way with them, too. It’s a revenge thing, best not to think about it, it will distract you from fapping, or turning away to snicker, in this case.

After Imari is finally captured by Kitami, Minase, who has been possessed all this time, is freed and decides that he loves her and can’t let Kitami take over her body. With the help of the art teacher and the magic book they interrupt the lesbian lick-a-thon and kill Kitami with a spell. And so concludes Bible Black’s first sinstallment with Minase and Imari having sex. They couldn’t really have ended it any other way to be fair, could they? Ah, but we need a dark twist to go out on. Saeki is shown to be planning to stealing the Bible Black when Imari shows up and destroys it with a spell of her own, showing that Kitani’s ritual did in fact work (she also turns out to be a hermaphrodite, I guess cause this show didn’t have enough junk in it already) and proceeds to rape Saeki cause well…he/she/it is evil and that’s what evil folk do.

New Testament

You know, I never would have guessed it wasn’t for children by the box cover. Nope. There were no hints.

Testament’s alternate title is “The Spear of Longinus”, (I could make another Caligula reference but I will abstain, seriously though, go watch that movie), and like I said before it takes place years after the original Bible Black. Imari has become a police woman with an incredibly questionable wardrobe and the initial story centers around her team investigating a series of strange murders that happen while people are having sex. Witnesses to the deaths, or at least those too busy fapping to get caught themselves, keep seeing the apparition of a blonde girl floating around the scene. Imari and her partner Aki are caught up in a bank robbery where Kitami takes over Imari’s body during the subsequent ritual to free them, but not without procuring the Lance first.

 

So Imari/Kitami has found her virgin sacrifice for this season in Aki but while trying to iniciate the ritual the blonde apparition from before, now revealed to be one Jody Crowley, interferes, causing the Lance to (this is so hard to say without laughing) get stuck in her ladybox, so she ends up being hunted by other black magic enthusiasts. The final ceremony climaxes (pun intended) with a possessed Imari and Jody Crowley fighting over Aki during a massive orgy. Jody seems to have the upper hand when the Lance exits Aki and makes the original Bible Black appear. The Gate from FMA devil comes out of the book and snatches up the souls of both Jody and Kitami. Jody ends up being consumed while Kitami manages to slither away yet again and into Jody’s body. Things seem to return to normal but in typical Bible Black fashion the last shot gives us a hint that there is still trouble ahead…

 End Thoughts

It’s been a while since I saw Bible Black but… New Testament wasn’t actually that bad. And as I write that I can feel the last lingering threads of my soul burning up and disintegrating…That being said it did have it’s fair share of terrible moments, too. Take the first scene; seeing a chick piss her pants up close and personal isn’t really on my list of “sexy”. It’s just have another mental image to repress, (it also happens a few more times, blegh). The rigorous fucking the followed was dull but at least it lets you know exactly what you are in for if you decide to watch all 6 episodes; which is long, loud and very messy. I’m not usually one to make judgments based on style, I know how subjective it is,…but Bible Black can be really ugly. Some of the still shots look fantastic, even beautiful, but when the characters move it distorts in a very hideous way, stripping it of all sexiness it could have had. The direction doesn’t help. Shots focus too much on the genitals that it’s kind of hard not to get bored or want to cringe, half the time I was going “what the fuck am I looking at?”. They don’t look good in animation! I’m sorry, perverts of the world, but they just don’t! Boobs are okay, but pinass and vajayjays just don’t translate well into anime. There is also a nasty habit of just speeding up the animation so sometimes it ends up looking like they are having some kind of super-sonic fuck. Just try and keep a straight face when that happens, I dare you.

It’s definitely graphic, though, probably more so than Overfiend. In fact Overfiend seems pretty shy compared to this. Bible Black has a confidence about it, which is an admirable quality. A complaint I had with Overfiend that I don’t with Bible Black is that it never tries to be something it’s not. Overfiend bragged about it’s grand story when really it was poorly constructed and just plain boring. Bible Black is purely classed as a hentai but it’s story, at it’s strongest points, was actually quite entertaining. The second half is definitely weaker, though the first 3 episodes were …dare I say…good? Good in the sense that I actually gave a shit about the characters (not literally, this isn’t Night Shift Nurses. I’m saving that for next time). I also found it did have some legitimately creepy moments, too; there is a scene where the police officers go to an autopsy room to examine the body of a murdered girl, but when they get there she’s seemingly alive and just sitting in the moonlight quietly. That was genuinely pretty eerie and unsettling. It’s balance of ero-guro is also much more well done that in Overfiend. The transitions aren’t as jarring and because of the whole occult angle the sexualized rituals actually make sense. They have a point, though granted an extremely lewd one. Characters are likeable in either their attitude or just how devious they are, but the alternate title should just be “yandere faces” because everyone has a freakin’ yandere face and it is awesome. I love yanderes, personally, but it did actually work into the bat-shit insane atmosphere that this series has.

Aside from the overload of lesbianism at the end I think it did a good job showcasing a variety of fetishes, too; Hell, there was hermaphrodites (chicks with dicks), uke guys, gang bangs, rape (both male and female), chalices of cum, ritualistic orgies, mind control, you name it. Inflation though? I’ve heard of it, but it was still pretty hilarious to finally see (stomachs don’t work like that, guys). And despite that it does have its sexy moments, (and regular sex, too, rest assured) unfortunately, more often than not and much like Overfiend, it manages to ruin them by going too far. Considering the audience it’s supposed to be pandering to, though, that is probably what people like about it. It doesn’t shy away from anything. Which, like I said, it’s pretty comendable in our climate of rampant censorship and habit of tip-toeing round really explicit stuff. Bad points; it does get very repetitive and boring by about episode 5, and like I said the overload of sex and satanism is quite a lot to take in. It really drags when the scene goes on too long or seems unessessary (which is quite often, to be fair), but for all Bible Black’s notoriety I think that to a certain extent it deserves the attention. You definitely aren’t going to forget it. Do I recommend it? Well, yes. With such a wide spectrum of fetishes it’s bound to have something for you, it just depends on whether you can sit through all of the things that you find less appealing (i.e the things that make you scream and run away crying), or not.
