First Impression – Kyoukai Senjou no Horizon

So what was this about again?

—————————————————-

Wooooo hoooo! Horizon is finally here at last! I remember seeing the trailers for this series and wanting to watch it so badly. So does the first episode actually live up to my excitement after waiting for it?! I guess we will all find out soon in amazing tag post.
It’s Sunrise + Jun, how can I not? Granted this combination isn’t usually quite so focused on boobs, but I hope to come out of it with a minimal amount of mental scarring. So, let’s proceed!
Wow, it has been a while since I’ve blogged and man I was unsure if I could do it. But yeah, man this is finally here. I’ve been waiting for this anime to come out since last spring and man how I have waited. But I’m unsure if this wait was worth it or if the impressions I got from the trailers and pictures would turn me away. Guess we’ll find out…

It’s the year 1457, a dramatic end of the world looking opening and we have the a beam of light piercing out of the sky and a young girl in the mix.

It’s the end of the world as we know it…

Now it’s the year 1648, there’s a long view through a ship towards a girl singing at a shrine with the nature around her as her audience. At first you might think those swaying rags could of been her breasts but no, they are her sleeves. Meanwhile, a young man seems to be listening from afar.

Inner thoughts: I’m way cooler than Ranka Lee, singing randomly alone

The opening scene was interesting enough with a good introduction of what kind of things to expect from this anime. It has a school setting but futuristic society and of course seems like we’ll be getting some action. Anyways, seems like there’s a athletics training class that will be taking place and the students look excited for it. The sensei states the situation where she will be running to a yakuza’s office to beat up the guy there and the students have until she reaches there to stop her with 10 attack points. We get a few hints of what kind of students are in this class with their witty or dense remarks. It seems that the president, Aoi Toori, who is also the head of the Musashi Academy and the president of the student council is the only one missing.

Class is in session. Welcome, here you will find the small, the big and the humongous boob types.

After some discussion about Toori and boob jiggling, the sensei gets back on track and they begin the training. It would be really boring for me to explain what happens in the chase but here’s some pic spam that hopefully gives you an idea of what happened.

The chase begins! One person already down and this guy thinks he can win by throwing curry on the sensei. I think not~!

Next in line! A Terry Bogard ninja wannabe with his trusty mecha friend….

And fight~!
(Behind the scenes… Ono Daisuke: “Yep, I’m so cool that I can play these two roles!”)

Guess you can tell that those guys above didn’t win but how about now?!

Guess nobody made it but now it’s the final boss time!

The sensei makes it to the yakuza office in victory and lectures the students by giving them a course on how to deal with a magician demon (but we all know this is an excuse for the sensei to deal with her personal problems with the yakuza). Toori arrives and makes an arrogant introduction which obviously shows how full of himself he is. Toori shows why he’s late due to buying a eroge PC game. With some nagging from the sensei and indecent remarks from Toori… we get some steamed sensei boob fondling.

Toori: “Look sensei! Look what I got!! We can share this with the whole class XD”

Toori: “Come on everyone! It’s a fun and cool game that you’ll all enjoy. I’ll give you a demonstration on how it works xD”

Ignoring the situation, Toori faces the class again to tell him his plan to make a confession to Horizon. The class seems shocked and we learn that the girl died 10 years ago along the nation’s border. Toori then goes on about how he’s facing reality and talks about war against the world rules that suppresses their rights. With the 10 year anniversary coming tomorrow, Toori will confess and not run away anymore from who knows what. With all the random story plot thrown at us, we can’t forget that the sensei is behind pissed off.

Toori: “Yeaaahh, I’m just that cool xD”

The beginning of sweet revenge. Teeeheeeheeeee~!

Round 25029384: Fight!!!

Kick off time. There he goooooooooooeeesss...

And the crowd is goes wild!!!

SCCCCCCCOOOREEEEEEEEE!!! Sensei’s victory pose.

After that kickoff, the credits start rolling and we get the narrator somewhat explaining some of the plot. But seriously, we still have no idea what is going on. We get some scenes of other characters whose identity is yet to be revealed. Then a girl passes out in front of the mysterious girl who was singing in the beginning and seems to work at a bread shop. To be continued…

Mysterious singing girl: “I knew I shouldn’t have stepped outside just now. Darn freeloaders coming my way”

End Thoughts:

HOLY COW! This first episode was so entertaining! First off I love the animation on the huge flying ships man I felt like I was watching another Final Fantasy anime, the only thing missing were those giant chocobo birds. I did like how each ship had actual shops and even a classroom?! Well I did feel they left out a lot of explanation near the end of the first episode, but I am sure we will get a huge recap on how stuff works in this unique world. Now that I think about it they did tell us it was about two nations fighting! But they shoved it in near the end while I was to busy staring at the other characters, well I sort of figured it’s another red versus blue set up like Maji de Watashi’s first episode.

I can’t leave out the character designs! They all seem to be ripped right out of a random fighting game series to me. One thing that stood out for me had to be the various stylized characters like that blob, random mecha looking dragon! And that WTF naked demon dude? LOL WHAT WAS THAT ahahaha. My favorite character so far that ninja Tenzou Crossunite voiced by the always amazing Ono, Daisuke! Which for me is strange to hear him playing a perverted character. Second best character? Toori Aoi! That guy near the end made me laugh so much he is such a wanna be pimp, I thought it was always a chick in the trailers because he does have some girlish features like those earrings? And yes there are countless girls for me to stare at but I haven’t found a favorite and no! I am not looking at the loli girls ahaha there was that busty blond….I was waiting for her to have the ojo sama laugh! OH HO HO HO HO.

Anyone else love that random music through out this episode? Some of the styles of music did remind me of the Redline OST! So I can bet Horizon will have a great OST when the time comes for it to get released. Hopefully next episode we get to see the other factions in this series, and I am sure we will learn so much about that mysterious Horizon that Toori was rambling on about! If she is “dead” it would be interesting to learn why she is so important to him. Oh and I hope we get to see another awesome teacher versus students battle! I was watching with my brother and we both really enjoyed how they kept up the high energy during that whole thing.

I just love it when Jun plays smarmy bastards. The style is actually really fun, and is probably the thing I liked most about Horizon (minus the obvious, as he wasn’t really in it all that much). There was a distinct lack of interesting story, however. It was a pretty silly and fanservice-centered first episode that sometimes felt like I was just watching someone play a fighting game than an actual show. It’s definitely a weakness that the fights, or really lack thereof, come across in such an unrelated way. If this isn’t a game already then it will definitely be turned into one, it has all the stencils for it.

Characters though, ugh. They were all kind of a mash up of Beelzebub, Infinite Stratos and maybe Legendary Heroes…it befuddles me. I’m not saying they weren’t at least vaguely enjoyable, but they were very tired. I liked the teacher, even if she was basically a fanservice tool. She was strong and fun and was the reason for the actually decent moments of action.

The music is absolutely fantastic! Omg, I want the OST already! It’s so prominent and in-ignorable, which I think is great because so many series start of with a pretty much inaudible score that only kicks in when something big happens, then you start noticing it more. With this is was just straight off filling your ears with techno goodness! So kudos to that Sunrise, your music rocks. On the whole though Horizon didn’t impress me hugely. It was pretty bland in every aspect, but I will stick with it for at least a few more episodes for the music and to see more of Jun’s arrogant prima donna.

Oh man what an episode. While the great amount of boob action annoys me, I am hoping that the story will pull me through this series and can outweigh such things. Like Hime said, the story was so lacking this episode that even the narrator short blast of information in the end wasn’t that helpful. All I seem to got from what was mentioned was that there are other nations and they worked to change some sort of history of their living and that a war is going to occur. But that probably isn’t all of it and there’s more, so lets hope that we’ll get more of the story in the next episode and less fanservice. But that fanservice part might just be wishful thinking.

The introductions of the characters was pretty straightforward. While we are given some names, not all of the characters are named yet so for now I’d be straying from pointing out individual names. Aside from that, the sensei is so cool and who would have guessed that she’d win against her students. Each student is very interesting with their abilities aside from the WTF slime and nekkid flying demon. As well, you can’t forget the curry man… what?! I’m still unsure what this hi-tech screens that appear are but they seem to be some type of system that each person has access to and their abilities are incorporated with it. Still unsure but man it’s kinda cool but what is even more amazing is that this guy if voiced by Ono Daisuke who also voices the fist fighting dude. Aoi Toori is such an amusing character with his full of himself attitude. But what will be weird is when Toori starts to cross paths with the girl who was singing in the beginning. I’m sure it will be weird but that’s when the story will get rolling.

The actual setting of this anime is pretty cool. Living in a city in the sky sounds so amazing along with it’s old Japanese town feel to it and the technology integration into this is pretty interesting. The whole idea of fighting is awesome to me because I love action packed flicks. Seeing a Terry Bogard ninja looking dude was so hilarious. I like the game feel element to this anime minus the big boobs. Like the others said, the music was great. Game music is always cool to me and this anime’s BGM gives such a feel to it. I still have no opinion on the opening or ending song but you’ll hear from me about that next time. Well, I’m sure there’s more that I can say about this but then I’d be just rambling on. So, until next time… lataz~

I watched this expecting it to be shit but it ended up not as bad as I thought it would be. I’m not crazy about Jun/Tori or rather I can’t make up my mind about him. I guess this show is okay but I am not sure how long I will be entertained (not very long, I think).

    • Ness says:

I’m kind of the opposite.. I was hoping this would be great but it wasn’t as much so for me. But then again, it’s still the first episode. Yeah, I’m not that crazy about Toori either. I just want fighting action! XD

      • Hime says:

I’ll just have to be all the crazy for him then

I thought it would be shit and it turned out shit, who knew?! But like Ness said, it’s only the first episode and even if it doesn’t turn out to be spectacular the least we can expect from it is to be entertaining.

    • Foshizzel says:

I am with Ness on this one! I was expecting something great and awesome! And I got what I wanted, sure we could have used a bit more explanation on the story but I am sure we will find out more soon.

Jun/Toori was odd but kind of cool to hear him play a funny character! Even thou he doesn’t seem to be a fighting type.

  2. amado says:

im now uncertain about this. I voted it as anticipated but its not quite there now. it can get better though so il wait for 2 more eps.
    fanservice can redeem this though

    • Ness says:

      Hahaha your last line<_<; Maybe for you but not for me. Yeah, I was anticipating this but now I'm having mixed thoughts. But oh well, gotta wait a few more eps to find out huh~ >_>;

    • Foshizzel says:

Action! That’s what I wanna see happening sure the random fanservice is there and it happens, that and LOLSUNBEAM OF DEATH.

  3. Toori-chan says:

Not much of an episode to fulfill my expectations… But the fights are definitely drawing me in like how I.S and Legendary Heroes did.

It’s kind of awkward when my name is constantly mentioned as the main character’s name (I better get used to it soon…)

    • Hime says:

Your name will be associated with sexiness tho so it’s all good BD

      • Foshizzel says:

But you are Himea! A awesome pink/blue/red haired vampire girl xD

        • BlackBriar says:

Hahaha!!! I’m inclined to agree on that one. I also see some potential sadistic tendencies (reaction to Blood-C with the Bairn bunny blender). The multicolored is a plus as well. Hime/Himea.

    • Foshizzel says:

I loved this first episode! Best chase scene ever right up there with Nichijou <3

LOL Yeah I kept thinking more A channel, sadly no one will ever have my name in any anime! Muhahaha

  4. BlackBriar says:

Not a bad way to start off. Its like feudal japan just in the future! I liked the whole random teacher chase and use whatever means to catch her, even if it’s to incapacitate her. The rules are that there are no rules.

And it looks like everything an Otaku can dream of. Lol, there’s a lot of possible character species and themes here. Demons, angels, werewolves, vampires, witches, mechs, slime, naked bald guy who looks like an evil guy yet talks like a nice guy, ninja, shrine maidens, perverts, otakus, lowlifes, scrubs, devils and so on. they got all kinds of characters in here dont they? Kore Wa Zombie Desu Ka now has fierce competition to its harem.

Jun’s character looks extremely smug and carefree. He had the balls to go in front everyone and his teacher to show an eroge game and told his other plans. You, sir, have earned my respect!

    • Foshizzel says:

Yep! Very cool location and flying ship/cities xD

Ohhhh yes! Mecha, monsters, witches, angels and like always fan service characters! But also beams of light….

I like hearing Jun as a comical character and yeah totally owned that teacher, then again she kicked him into next week! Ouch xDD

  5. T.K. says:

Quite an entertaining starter episode, especially the soundtrack and the sheer amount of characters. However the ending info-dump soured my views on the series a little.

I know how “incomprehensible” the light novel is (approx. 2000 pages per volume) but just a 3 minute exposition with a slideshow of the factions involved doesn’t help…

    • Foshizzel says:

That soundtrack? Amazing right? I really enjoyed it xD

Ooooh damn that is nuts I guess that’s due to all the action?

    • Ness says:

Indeed, great BGM. Yeah, the ending dump of information didn’t help at all. Ah well, it’s still the first episode haha.

      • T.K. says:

Yeah but I’m guessing it’s mostly the light novel’s fault. Don’t expect too much from the series though, from what I’ve read in forums, the novel has only just finished the prologue….in three volumes XD

        • Ness says:

3 Volumes to finish a prologue… x_x;Ahh sounds bad..or maybe it can be good if the story is that good. Unless, it’s 3 volumes long because there’s too much random crap haha. Ah well… I don’t have high hopes for this series at the moment

  6. Joojoobees says:

This made no sense to me. I assume there is a reason that we jumped around hundreds of years and had random shots of a bread shop, but nothing here intrigued me enough to find out why.

    • Foshizzel says:

Dawwww! I hope you find something fun about it next time, well if you do watch again! I know for me I love action and fighting that’s what got my attention the most.

      • Joojoobees says:

I definitely like fighting, but I think I will try Maji de Watashi, instead. Besides we still have Last Exile and Guilty Crown coming up, both of which promise action.

  7. Ceyrai says:

The only thing that really registered to me was that some character designs looked like they were inspired by Guilty Gear… otherwise, meh.

    • Foshizzel says:

Yeah those designs are really something! I know I liked them, yes they are obviously super skin tight on the girls so reminded me more of Stratos styled suits.

  8. Samantha Zan says:

Oh first episodes, got to love them sometimes xD. Anyway, I really like Jun’s character in this (Toori I think?), he already seems like my favorite character with all the screen time he got XD. Not to mention he likes eroge FTW xD. Even if I do like characters already, I do have to agree the story wasn’t as fleshed off as I wanted it to be, but none the less still entertaining.

    • Foshizzel says:

Yep! They really either A keep you wanting more or B fail and need to die in a fire, this case was A! For me can’t wait to see more of this.

Yep Jun as Toori! a crazy comical character, yes! eroge fan lololol. There are so many characters for everyone to enjoy! My favorites are the ninja, blob, mecha dragon, teacher and Toori! I am sure by the time this nears the end my list will become huge xD

      • Dan-go says:

It’s one of those things where you watch it, and you know it’s bad, but you can’t help but like it

  10. akagami says:

I went into this not expecting much and was pleasantly surprised. Plus I can count on Sunrise to deliver an entertaining show, even if it’s a train-wreck.

    • Foshizzel says:

Ooooh it should be very entertaining! Right up there with Guilty Crown, I hope this doesn’t become a train wreck to fast…

    • Ness says:

Yes for Sunrise, it is entertaining even though it doesn’t seem that great hahha.

  11. Junko says:

I STILL DON’T GET WHAT HAPPENED, SOMEONE HELP ME

  12. Dan-go says:

That was kinda disspointing, good animation but…thats about it. I can’t help but feel i’m missing alot of the refernces that come along too…is that blob thing the creature from ragnarok? Either way, 3 ep rule on this

    • Ness says:

Never heard of a 3 ep rule.. but GL to you! Unlike you, I have no choice but to see this through haha. That blob… man… what a waste of animation… Right.

  13. Moni Chan says:

ohhh i’m going to enjoy this series. Full of laughes for me. The running scene was epic and the curry man made my day. The fall season keeps on getting better abd better

    • Ness says:

The whole thing about chasing the sensei was so random but kind of made the sensei cool in my book. As well, the curry man was just so amusing that it made it all worth watching. Just gotta hope that the boobs are the only downfall to this hah and we get more action
