Blood-C – 05

Running away screaming is not a proper way to thank someone for saving your life

Again with the information episodes that don’t explain anything! Blood-C has really taken off from the Saya based moefest from a couple of episodes ago. Anyways, I’ll let you be the judge on what the heck this all means.

Saya visits the scene of the previous night’s battle, only to find no evidence that it ever happened. Also, when she recalls the event, she gets a mysterious headache and sees the light again. It’s at this time that Fumito calls out to her and HOLY CRAP he’s not wearing his apron for once. This doesn’t last long however because they go back to Café Guimauve and he puts it on again.

Fumito asks again if she’s okay and when she says she is, he tells her not to lie (also, he touches her face again). Saya then admits that she’s confused and that she keeps getting headaches. Because of the headaches, he tries to take away her coffee but Saya needs her daily caffeine fix says that it calms her down so he doesn’t. Later, her father comes in and finds her asleep at the counter. After her father stands there looking stunned for a couple of seconds, Fumito explains that she fell asleep. He also mentions her headaches.

That night, Saya runs out to fight Elder Bairns again, only this time it’s foggy out. She ends up in a playground and hears the rattling of a staff. This time, the Bairn is human shaped and has a veil on so the face is covered. Also, it has a female voice. The Bairn hits Saya pretty hard right from the start and despite Saya’s best efforts, she doesn’t manage to land a single hit. It also doesn’t help that she can’t see through the fog.

The thing almost kills her, until she manages to knock the hat with the veil off revealing the head to be a giant eyeball (points to CLAMP for creativity). The Bairn then tells Saya that this is all punishment for not abiding the covenant and then explains further that the covenant is between them and the humans.

You have no idea how hard it is for me not to put in eye puns every other line

Just then, a woman runs by being attacked by fairy Bairn things. Saya kills them and goes to help the woman, but she runs away screaming when she sees Saya covered in blood and holding a sword. The eye Bairn says that Saya has the face of a hunter and Saya retorts by saying that she’ll protect everyone.

The two start to fight again, only this time more evenly. Eventually, her eyes turn red and she slices the fog away. She then notices that her sword is attached to string connected to the Bairn, thus how it could read her movements. Also, the Elder Bairn itself is where the fog came from.

Saya ditches her sword and runs at the Bairn, stabbing her hand through its eye. Saya asks what the covenant is about, but the Bairn explodes into a bloody mess before she gets any answers. After that’s over with, Saya goes to the woman who didn’t run very far after being saved (…what is with these people and not running away very far?) and asks if she’s alright. The woman just screams and runs away though. So much for gratitude.

Anyone could see that Saya had clearly won the fight

Saya turns around and sees the dog she’s been trying to pet for days. There’s a flash of red blood cells and Saya gets a headache again. She blacks out and there’s a narration of how thoughts get in that way of what people desire.

The next day, it’s raining out and Saya is at school. Saya spends that time staring blankly out the window and Yuka (who actually gets line of dialogue this episode) asks what’s wrong. Saya explains that it feels like she can’t think properly and Yuka says that Saya should come to her if anything is ever wrong. It’s around then that the twins come in and announce that gym is cancelled, so they should tell scary stories instead.  Kanako is against it at first but decides to let them do it anyways. It’s not like they had anything better to do.

Itsuki tells some story about a kid who was pushed off a cliff and the twins take the opportunity to molest Saya. This earns them a hit from Yuka, Saya doesn’t understand why they were at a cliff in the first place, and the conversation moves on to the topic that stories they can relate to are scarier. Kanako says that she has one like that and begins talking about a story from their town.

She tells them about inhuman things which eat people and can speak their language. Sound familiar? Well it does to Saya and she begins having flashbacks of all the Elder Bairns she killed. Kanako says that the people tried to reason with the creatures but could only come up with one solution. Saya asks what it is, but before she gets an answer, she starts getting flashes of blood again and sees the light. She faints (or something) and Tokizane catches her.

Sometime later, Saya is in her shrine’s library looking trying to figure out what the resolution was. She also remembers Tokizane and says that he is probably the only one besides her father to call her name without an honorific. She looks inside a book at a picture depicting a human and an Elder Bairn, and notes that something is off. However, she’s interrupted before she can figure out what it is.

It turns out that one of the twins is there and Saya knows immediately that she’s Nene. Nene is impressed because not many people can tell the difference between them, but Saya says that she can because the twins are two different people. Saya asks what she’s there for and Nene says that Saya collapsed in class so she came to see how she was doing.

Nene apologises for making Kanako tell that story and asks if Saya collapsed because of it. Saya says that she’s okay and that her headaches have been going on for a while. Nene expresses her concern over this and says that if anything were to happen, it would most likely happen to her instead. Just as she says that, an Elder Bairn emerges from underground right behind her. Saya dodge-rolls Nene out of the way and Nene freaks out over the Bairn. The episode ends there.

Final Thoughts:

Wow, I think this was the first episode of Blood C that didn’t have Saya singing in it. This is also the first time that a Bairn has appeared in daylight. On the shrine no less. In front of one of Saya’s friends. Sigh, this is why I hate cliff hangers. SO MUCH TENSION. Ahaha they certainly have upped the pacing for the plot here from the revelation that happened in episode 3. At least we know a bit more about the covenant now, as well as the fact that people seem to have forgotten about it. I have a few theories about the solution the people came up with involving either periodic human sacrifice or the creation of Saya’s family of Bairn hunters, but there are A LOT of things that don’t add up still.

I was kind of hoping that the Bairn with the staff and veil would turn out to be someone Saya knew just to see her reaction and its effect on her life. I was hoping it would be the teacher in particular, but she ended up playing an interesting role anyways. I’m saying this right now, she totally knows something. That story was just too close to the truth. Also, what was with Tokizane noticing right away that something was wrong with Saya? Maybe he’s just really observant.

It was nice seeing people have personality outside of their relationship from Saya. Who would have thought that the twins could have opposing opinions? In any case, it will be interesting to see how Nene reacts to Saya after this next fight is over (assuming she survives, which I am thanks to the preview). Or maybe she will just forget it ever happened like everyone else…? Next episode will certainly be interesting.

Preview:

Next episode continues the fight with the Bairn. Also, it seems like there will be more daytime deaths and three twins….? Interesting.

Wow, interesting episode of Blood C! Getting some background info about the covenant and all. Although, it makes me suspect the teacher even more. But that lady at the beginning of the first fight scene, I was wondering why she wouldn’t leave, after Saya got ride of those monsters around her. To think after all that saving Saya did, she just screams and runs away. I just thought maybe Saya shouldn’t use the hand that was smoothered in blood to help her out xD.

I don’t know if that was just me, but during the scene near the end Saya says that Tokizane was the first person to call her by her name besides her dad, and I’m like “wtf, don’t your friends call you Saya-chan?” xD. Maybe it was just the subbing I watched on my episode. Oh and points for Tokizane catching Saya near the end too. Only the cool quiet guys notice that xD.

BUT anyway those are some things that I just wanted to say to get it out of my mind XD. So with Saya collasping and getting those flashbacks (supposively) in her head, it makes me think that its like the original series (Blood+) where Saya was destroying everything in the first episode during that huge war (I think that’s what happened XP). I don’t know if it’s relating to Blood+ at all, but at least I like where its going somehwere with the plot. Especially that cliffhanger, I’ve really wanted someone to see Saya when’s she’s all Baddass (Even with the freaked out reaction too XD).

On a side note, I swear I thought that it was the coffee that made Saya collaspe twice during this whole episode. Fumito just looked so suspicious after Saya fell asleep in the cafe XP

    • Karakuri says:

Things definately got interesting! Yeah, the teacher is pretty suspicious and I was wondering about the woman the whole time too. She’s lucky she didn’t end up like the guys from the last episode. Lololol yeah Saya holding out the hand covered in blood probably wasn’t the best idea.

The subs I watched weren’t the best at explaining it either. I just understood what she meant based on context. Yeah, Tokizane is probably my fav guy so far in the series.

Hmm yeah I was thinking Blood+ too only I don’t know if this Saya is that old or not. Next episode will be interesting for sure! Or maybe they’ll just pull the whole “oh no! I can’t let my friend see me fight for some reason or another!” bs and we’ll have a battle of Saya dodging until Nene goes away. I hope not though.

Yeah, he does seem suspicious… The timing just seems extremely coincidental. I haven’t forgotten the whold guimauve flashback thing from last episode.

    • Joojoobees says:

This is a very Japanese thing. Calling her “Saya-chan” isn’t calling her by her name, because it includes an honorific. Tokizane called her “Saya” (no honorific). That is considered more intimate. Just an example of how incredibly formal the Japanese are (at least from the perspective of — notoriously informal — Americans).

  2. Metalsnakezero says:

Ok, now things are starting to get go and it was all thanks to a Giant eye ball monk?

    • Karakuri says:

Yeah, pretty much. That, a chicken and a giant talking train. I don’t know how they’re deciding on the shapes of these things but they seem to be getting weirder and weirder XD

  3. amado says:

now im starting to think that the coffee also has something in it…

WMG: saya’s memories is being suppressed by something(probably the food) to keep her in their side as a precautionary.

    • Karakuri says:

It’s just one thing after another that make the cafe look suspicious….

Oh that would be interesting. Though I wonder if and why she would switch sides in the first place. She seems pretty intent on protecting the people she cares about, including Fumito…

      • anaaga says:

You can see that Saya just keeps getting giddy and, um, drunk every time she eats Fumito’s food. And that Guameva thingy? He made it only for her

  4. Ghostalker says:

I think the picture in which Saya thought something was off was actually Show ▼

    • Ghostalker says:

And regarding to my post above, I’m not talking about the human but to the monster. Show ▼

      • Karakuri says:

Ahaha the only thing I spotted wrong was that the guy was holding the bow wrong.

        Show ▼

  5. Joojoobees says:

Nene expresses her concern over this and says that if anything were to happen, it would most likely happen to her instead. Just as she says that, an Elder Bairn emerges from underground right behind her.

That was my favorite part! LOL!

  6. BlackBriar says:

This is a serious jump from the slice of life bit. And it’s gone from monster of the week to monsters of the week. That one eye monster is creepy and the way Saya dealt with it was blood and gore at its best. Even her schoolmates have been dragged into job so this is shaping up to be a lot of bloody fun.

    • Karakuri says:

It’s a huge jump from what episode one was. And yeah, I noticed that they’re increasing the fight times now. Still no permanent ‘bad guy’ yet though. I quite like how she dealt with the eye monster, it gives us a break from the sword fighting we’ve seen thus far. This show IS turning out to be quite fun, let’s hope CLAMP doesn’t leave us with a cheap ending.

      • BlackBriar says:

Whatever Saya is, it’s gotta be half human thanks to the fact that her eyes turn red and she can understand what the monsters are saying.

Somethings not right about that teacher. She seems to know a little too much about that story, as if she’s been there at the very beginning to draw out what happened. And she probably knows a lot more than she’s telling. And as usual, there’s that dog that keeps following her like a ghost.

I’m sure that restaurant owner is poisoning her with whatever he’s put into the food. He’s being way too friendly for me. Monsters in the daytime AND right in the shrine. If there’s even one there then that means there are others waiting to pop out.

  7. anaaga says:

Served Nene right. Damn, that girl is annoying as hell. And did you see her expression in the preview? Expression of an ungrateful bitch

And it seems like the monsters will have a feast next week afternoon

    My theory of the caffe:
    Show ▼

This anime should be titled “Everybody’s Lives are Centered Around Saya” or something like that. The whole village is having a crush on that girl, even the teacher

    • Karakuri says:

Ahaha SOMEONE doesn’t like the twins. Well I assume that Nene will either die, forget it ever happened or run away screaming like the retarded woman from this episode and act awkward the next day. Either that or she’ll act like it’s the coolest thing ever that Saya gets to bathe in blood every day, but I doubt that because of the preview.

Yes! I’m hoping for a lot of death and blood! That’s always exciting! =3

      Show ▼

Yeah,I agree. Pretty much every conversation this episode went something like:

      Person A: What’s wrong Saya?
Saya: noth- *is interrupted* Fine, I have a headache.
Person A: I am concerned. COME TO ME IF YOU HAVE ANY PROBLEMS.

      • anaaga says:

        Don’t forget!

Person A:*stroke Saya’s cheek* oh god Saya is basically selling her cheek.

Btw, Tokizane x Saya fan here

  8. anaaga says:

Btw, I read from MAL that there’s no Blood-C next week. At least an used said that

And a movie’s going to come out already? Fast.

    • Karakuri says:

WHAT?! …hmmm. I guess I’ll have to wait and see next thursday…

Yeah, the movie comes out 2012. Not a clue which month though.

    • BlackBriar says:

What?! No Blood-C next week?! Just when it started to get interesting with all the monsters, the secrets that the people are hiding and waiting to see who’s gonna stab who in the back when their secret gets out. At least it wasn’t like Shiki with a 3 week break. That was unbearable.

A movie? Huh, I wonder what the storyline will be like.

  9. Foshizzel says:

OH MA GOD! Great episode stuff is going down really really fast and damn I almost thought one of the twins were going to get cut in half xD that monster was so like OMG TWINS I must eat one of them.

So it seems Saya has some missing memories? I think the sweets and coffee she has been eating is screwing up with her mind, well blocking certain key battles. There is something screwy at school too! Saya’s teacher basically knew the whole story behind Saya’s recent events.

Lol I love the monsters each week a odd and unique design <3

    • Karakuri says:

Yeah it’s all happening pretty fast now! Let’s hope the plot doesn’t get confusing in the process.

Hmmm, yeah a lot of people seem to be thinking that. I don’t know if it’s the school itself, but damn that teacher seems suspicious!

The MotW formula isn’t gettting old with me at all XD Though I’m seriously wondering how they come up with this stuff

  10. edru says:

heres what I think about saya and the covenant:
the covenant had something to do with a human and an elder bairn mated together and then they were saya’s ancestors.

    • Karakuri says:

Hmmm, but wouldn’t that be hard considering that all the Bairn wanted to do was kill the humans…?

      • BlackBriar says:

I don’t think it would be that hard to believe. In Blood+, Saya and Diva were both sisters and enemies. But Diva had children with one of Saya’s Chevaliers, Riku. Twin Chiropteran girls with opposing blood types capable of killing each other.

  11. Junko says:

Since when did this show have development and interesting plot lines?! Only CLAMP would take five episodes to do that. But I’m glad, and excited!

    • Karakuri says:

YES!!! Now if we get an awesome complete nonlazy ending maybe people’s CLAMP hate will be less intense! ….You know who you are.

      • BlackBriar says:

CLAMP may have saved themselves some serious face with this turn around. I was starting to think this show wasn’t worthy of it’s name especially with all the singing and average school life thing. But the sudden plot twist and its first cliffhanger changed my mind.

  12. sakura_fai says:

Saya drank the coffee and then she fell asleep later….That further proves my theory that Fumito is putting something into her drink and food. XD

Saya’s attitude is very inconsistent. She saves the girl in this epsisode, but leaves the other to die in the previous, unless she’s sexist? Plus, her fighting is random, soemtimes she’s good, sometimes she gets her butt kicked…O.o I know she’s bipolar, but in everything as well?

    • Karakuri says:

Yeah, but she also stays up at night killing things, so maybe she was just tired? Fumito seems to be a person she completely relaxes around so that might be a factor too. (That being said, that would make it really easy for him to be decieving her)

Ahaha oh yeah! I had forgotten about that! … hmm yeah that’s pretty inconsistant. Well she was following the first guy to see what was going on, but for the woman she knew right away what was happening, so maybe thats it…?

I think how well she fights depends on if her eyes turn red or not, though that makes me wonder why she can’t just turn them red in the first place. I don’t know. She can’t walk properly, but is good at sports. She can cut things with a katana, but not a knife. It’s all over the place….

      • anaaga says:

Does she even realizes that her eyes turn red? I don’t think so, that’s probably why she can’t save some of the people. She can’t control her transformation. Also, she can save the woman because the woman’s minions are small compared to the bird monster’s minions. It’s like killing mosquitoes 😀

  13. fathomlessblue says:

I’m still finding the attempts at slice of life to be insufferably boring (the same slow paced conversations about how much Saya loves her dad, clueless love interests and cake are not entertaining in the slightest, and this is coming from someone who loved Kimi ni Todoke for goodness sake!), but at least it isn’t as overbearing as the first 3 eps. I’m praying all the fluff is to lull you into a false sense of security before the drama side kicks in. That and more battles, which is one of the few things Blood C really excels at.

Mostly I’m excited at the flashbacks that appeared in this ep. I know people are alluding to Blood+ in terms of a connection, but many of those fb scenes seem to come straight out of the original Blood: The Last Vampire ova, e.g. the blood splattering against the train carriage window, an airport at night, looking through a wire fence towards the city beyond etc. The fact that Chiropterans are in the flashback make it even more puzzling why they’ve now been replaced by the monster-of-the-week-esque Elder Bairns. Hopefully there will be some decent revelations forthcoming.
