Blood-C – 02
Tired of battles in a forest? Have one in a cave.
It’s so nice out today~ No, actually it’s disgustingly humid here and I wish it would just give up and rain like it was supposed to 2 days ago. Anyways, if I had any doubts that CLAMP had a hand in writing this before, I have none now thanks to this episode. We’ll see how it goes from here.
Saya begins fighting some mysterious monster thing. There’s nothing much to note here besides that she cut half of the thing’s face off in a totally badass way and also got a cut on her cheek in the process of killing it.
Unfortunately, Saya does not take kindly to interpretive dancing of any sort
The scene changes to the next day and just when you think the horror is over, Saya starts singing again. However, she stops quickly because Fumito is outside and he hears her. Inside the café, he starts singing too and Saya is all embarrassed that he heard her. They start talking about how Saya likes her coffee black and he gives her a guimauve, the namesake of the café.
They also talk about how Saya has a lot of admiration for her father and he likes sweets but he’s too cool to eat them in front of Saya. Fumito give Saya some more guimauve to take home and on the way to school, Saya sings. There is then a random flashback to Fumito saying that guimauve feels like a ‘certain something’.
Real men wash dishes.
However, this is no longer important because Saya sees the dog from the last episode again and then spends an abnormally long time attempting to move close enough to pet it. It runs away and Saya realises that she’s late for school.

During school is pretty much Saya being naïve and clumsy, Itsuki (class president) not so subtly hitting on Saya, and the twins making it even more obvious, yet somehow Saya still doesn’t get it. Lunchtime, they all admire Saya’s Fumito-made bento and talk about how small the town is. We also learn that guimauve is supposed to feel like a kiss (oh, CLAMP).
Tokizane (the guy who always arrives late) is seen wandering around by Saya and she runs up to him. She forces part of her bento onto him because ‘people get sad if they don’t eat’ and he notices the wound on her face and says he hopes it doesn’t scar. As he walks away, Saya sees the light again and the colours dilute, but her friends interrupt any possible plot development.
After another round of Saya singing (with her father hearing it this time), it’s then explained that Saya’s enemy are called the Elder Bairn (or at least that’s what the subs called them. Yes, let’s throw more random languages around to confuse the viewer.) and that they feed on humans. Sounds pretty vampire-like to me. The only thing that can kill them is the scared blade they have and Saya’s mother died while fighting them, so Saya now has to for whatever reason.
My question is how they manage to tell the books apart from one another
Later, Saya fights an Elder Bairn on a mountain and they end up falling into a cave filled with water. Saya swims up and looks pretty wounded, but the Bairn is nowhere in sight. There’s a change in view and we see it attached to the cave wall and slowly creeping up on her from behind. Just as it gets close enough to strike, Saya shoves a rock down its throat and slashes at it with her sword. There’s even more blood here and more of her eyes turning red. It ends with Saya staring up at the moon and saying something about protecting.

Final Thoughts:
They are definitely getting their money’s worth with Nana Mizuki. I mean, they had her sing every 5 minutes or so in this episode. Isn’t there anything else they can do to fill for time? They focused a bit more on the characters this episode, (which was better than having Saya run everywhere) but they still haven’t really gone in depth with anyone. Saya’s father is pretty awesome (not as awesome as the tsundere father from Ore wa Imouto, but it’s close) and the twins are now somewhat amusing but that’s about it. I didn’t mind the whole guimauve part so much, because I actually knew what it was. I was more surprised/happy that the couple years of French I took in jr. high finally paid off as opposed to disappointed in the lack of substance (lol).
The whole ‘guimauve feels like a kiss’ thing is such a typical CLAMP thing and now I’m wondering what other typical CLAMP things they’ll put in here. A potential BL paring? A character with an eye patch and/or vision problems? The Tsubasa characters again? (Oh god, I hope not.) CLAMP is usually pretty good with making their storylines interesting (minus the unsatisfying endings they’ve had lately) so hopefully that will kick in here soon. Blood C is moving pretty slowly so far and they still haven’t explained much. I like the double persona thing they have going on, but they seem to be focusing more on the clumsy Saya and I’m not finding her that interesting because it just doesn’t seem to be connecting to the storyline. I just hope the next episode has less singing and more plot.

Mm, agree with you in hoping the plot begins to properly kick in soon, though I’ve still got hopes for Blood-C. The fights are, for me, pretty good in sequence, but still fills a bit unexplained. It’s good though the ‘family secret’ (I’M your father, Saya) is coming next week, hopefully waste less time on mediocre things. Sure, build up Saya’s character but hopefully not at the expense of another nose job for her 🙂

the romance aspect was pretty bland for me though it could also improve later.
id really love this if saya develops some other abilities later like growing wings or a spike/blade in her forearm like crow from deadman wonderland.

Yeah, these first couple episodes have been slow. The only thing getting me through these episodes is the reminder that Madoka also started out slow and then ended fantastically. It’s different writers working on this, but hopefully it ends with the same amount of awesome. I completely agree with you for the romance part. There’s so many things that could potentially happen, but there have been no developments yet.
Ahaha that would be awesome! A powerup would be nice.

Saya still proves she’s an efficient monster killer. Good fights be they in forests or caves. This wasn’t so bad but I hope the story starts up soon. I can somewhat live with this because thanks to the preview saying the truth will be revealed means they were just showing us Saya’s “normal” life before it completely shatters into pieces.

Yeah, I think the fights scenes are really well done too. The preview does sound pretty promising, even if it does look like the majority is still Saya and friends. That is how the summary of the show seemed to portray it (the whole normal life shattered to pieces), so hopefully you’re right on that part.

I wasn’t too big on this episode, sad to say. The school scenes went on forever and just kind of wasted time till the fight. I was hoping that the “certain something” the guimauve resembles would be blood and make Saya flip out since that shop guy was acting so shifty, BUT NO. MORE SINGING.
I liked the fight with the plant monster, I just wish there was more of it. I hope that we get more substance with the plot next episode, the preview sounds promising but we don’t know how the episode will go just yet.

Ahaha yeah, I think the majority of the episode was spent on the cafe and lunch scenes. I never even thought about guimauve resembling blood (though they were a weird pink color). That could have been really deep considering Saya really liked them…
The fights are definitely the highlight of the episode, no doubt. I was pleasantly surprised when this episode had two instead of just the one from the preview.

Still don’t know where this is going, but I kind of like it. There is too much distance between the day and night Saya for things to stay that way. Also I bet at least one of her school friends already knows about the Elder Bairns (for one reason or another).

When they said “guimauve feels like a kiss,” I literally went “ugh, CLAMP.” Even without the designs, their influence is everywhere in the series. You can count on some BL though I hope CLAMP will avoid their eye fetish for this series. But seeing that Saya wears glasses and changes her eye color, I doubt we’ll get completely away from those roots.

Second episode! Moarrrrr random singing! And awesome plant battle at the end, well not the best fight ever but still fun to watch. This might be more monster of the week than Sacred Seven! But that’s fine I just want to see Saya kill things anyway.
