Oh look, Puss-in-boots… and meet Miss Merry Nightmare!
Welcome to the first impressions for Yumekui Merry! So far I have heard most of the brand new shows of winter season have bombed, or have been full of fail. Kind of sucks to hear that but ah well can’t be helped. This week I turn older! Yay, another birthday! At least cake will be good with anime. Might see Tron in 3D and see what all the cool kids are saying about that movie. Really looking forward to drawing some fan arts soon of new shows! Well the non-sucky ones.
Onto the review! Yumekui Merry’s plot at the beginning seems like every other supernatural type of show: main character is from another world and somehow travels to the human world where no one can see her. Much like the first episode of Bleach, with a bit of dream world thrown into the mix. Also the other world is filled with these cats that wear gloves, boots and other types of clothes. Yeah, buddies of Puss-in-boots.
Merry has a freaking building for an alarm clock!
That cat is so manly, look at those gloves!
Pictured in pink is Yumeji Fujiwara, a strange kid with a power to see what kind of dreams you will see through colors. How that is useful, is strange to me but guess it works. He does have lots of strange dreams mostly about talking cats. I am no fan of the furry so they are now creepy cats! Run away!
Looks like someone had a long night…
And then we meet Merry Nightmare! Such an odd yet cool name. She can’t remember what she really is but she wakes up in the dream world and then appears on the human side to walk around town aimlessly.
Blonde dude has those creepy eyes, they want to eat your SOULLLL!!
Someone failed to get into the Glittering Crux cool kids club, IT’S A PINCCCHHH
Yumeji wakes up after his trip to make-believe Disney world to join his friends then it’s off to school for some odd dream reading. Do kids in anime even learn anything? They seem to always have so much free time. After a bit of random fun with his crazy friends, he tries to see into his own dreams only to see nothing but black and red, knowing he will see those cats again. Until he bumps into our main girl who loses her hat and falls right on top of him. Was shocked she didn’t beat the snot out of him! And he didn’t even freak out.
Special greetings from Merry! Lucky you, Yumeji…
I love those crazy frog eyes!
The two of them part ways and Yumeji wanders the street, and ends up back in dream world to get attacked by the small cat army. Things are slightly different though as he faces a new threat in the form of a huge mask wearing person who wants his body, mostly for traveling back and forth from his world to the humans. Merry shows up and the two battle it out! The masked fighter calls himself Chaser John Doe. Awesome, crazier names! Merry overpowers the man and cracks his mask. Before he can make any smart remarks he simply leaves saying you’re one of those and retreats. Merry simply calls him an idiot and Yumeji returns to his real world, joined by his new found friend, who passes out resting on him.
It’s Spawn! But Kitty style?!
MY HAT GIVES ME AN AWESOME POWER!!
Look at that stomach giving Nicole Richie the run for her money!
CATS WITH GUNS! THIS IS CRAZY!!
Merry packs quite the hits; wonder what her shoes are made of?! STEEL?!
Beaten and sad boss looks depressed even with a mask on…
KITTY WANTS TO ROCK!!!!
Merry has some of the best facial expressions! This one is the DUHHHHH face.
That’s right, it was all a bad trip bro, breath in those paint fumes…
Can I get a “doshta shounen” here? Nakata Jouji has an epic voice.
First half simply introduced the main character cast, which has your typical friendly type with Saki Kirishima who I liked instantly, because she seems to be the goof ball type of character. Then you have the childhood friend Isana Tachibana who lives with the Yumeji of course! But by far the most fun characters are the Chaser guy and Merry. Who seems to be a ball of energy and an impressive fighter for someone her size, but this is a J.C. Staff show and they tend to have tough female lead characters.
The villain they have is also very cool! Nakata Jouji of course and I’m very impressed so far with the voice cast, seem to match up quite well. I wasn’t too sold on the whole talking cats with clothes characters, however they do fit the theme of a dream like world. Makes me wonder what else they can throw at us with the supernatural elements and dream world versus real world setup they have going. Maybe more like Bleach keeping them both separate? Guess we will wait and see.
I really hope they can continue to keep up the high quality production on this as the city was a bit dull compared to the dream world with some old beaten up buildings. During the fight scene it was really fluid and nice not really hard to follow at all, then again she looked like she didn’t break a sweat beating old Chaser up. But really hard to say based on one episode if I can call it great, only time will tell! But so far I like the fun characters and world they have created.
Next week appears to be a bit of a back-story for Merry, maybe we will get to see what she really is! The preview showed a human with similar hairstyle and a fairy or a demon with her. I would guess, they did some odd fusion and you get Merry.
Thanks for reading! See you next time.
