Alright, I know you’ve all been waiting for this and here it is. Today me and Overcooled sat down to watch one of our long expected shows and chatted while we watched it (in realtime) together. What follows is some excerpts from our chat log. Enjoy, I know we did. :3

Overcooled: XD The art style is gorgeous, first of all. It doesn’t even feel like an anime, it just feels like…art.
Masu: and then the lightening speed at which the show runs at. :O it’s like sensory overload
Overcooled: something happens every second, literally. I thought HOTD had that down during its action sequences
Masu: hurr hurr
Overcooled: but it is definitely sensory overload
Masu: TTGL team is the top gunner for that
Overcooled: Everything is godly, even the soundtrack. Also: best transformation sequence ever
Masu: think mahou shoujo, but about 9000x sexier, 9000x cooler, 9000x as interesting AND they did it to kill a poop monster
Overcooled: I know. Some people might think the humor is a bit crude though
Masu: what’s crude when you have the most insane explosion we’ve seen since FLCL and TTGL? Which, by the way, had [many] of the same people working on them. And by same, I mean Imaishi Hiroyuki
Overcooled: I know, I’m just playing devil’s advocate. I feel sorry for the people who don’t like the art, saying it’s too “Americanized.”
Masu: is that what people are saying? o.O
Overcooled: apparently

Overcooled: I’ve been reading the mal forums and [in] some comments some people were actually disappointed
Masu: interesting. Can’t understand that at all
The show to watch this season.
End Thoughts:
Overcooled: Call it whatever you want: Powerpuff Girls, Dead Leaves, Invader Zim. In the end, PnS is a highly original anime with undeniable charm. Everything is just executed perfectly. They wanted to make a bold, crazy anime and they pulled it off spectacularly. Yeah, it has raunchy humour and a nonsensical plot. That’s the POINT. It’s absurd in the way that explaining the plot of FLCL to anyone with a shred of sanity makes them go “wt?”. I can see people utterly hating this show, but I adore it for crossing every line and breaking every boundary. If we want anime to evolve, we need innovative stuff like PnS.
What will blow your mind the most is the transformation sequence. The style suddenly changes from small, kiddy blobs into full-grown adult strippers at the tip of a hat. Hands down, it is the best transformation sequence ever. GTFO Sailor Moon, seriously. Speaking of style changes, so far each baddy died with some sort of model actually exploding. 2 seconds of a completely different medium. It leaves me to wonder is there anything this show WON’T do? Aside from not be awesome, that is. The first episode was about a poopie monster and a panty-licking car…what else is there to expect? I really can’t see how this show could slow down, it’ll only keep up the quality or get MORE AWESOME.
I looooveee this show, it could just turn out to be my favourite of the season if it keeps this up. I’m soooo glad we get to blog about this kickass show. If you couldn’t tell, Masu and I were FREAKING OUT as we were watching it, it was so good. If you were tentative and waiting to read a few reviews before watching it…watch it. You cannot understand the chaos with sheer words alone, you must watch it with your very own retinas. In short: PnS is a mustsee. Oh god, I’m still on an adrenaline rush from it…@_@
Quiz: Who is who?
Masu: Remember when I went on a mini-rant during our summer preview saying that I am increasingly dissatisfied with anime now days? That I felt that the anime industry has started to follow a trend that seeks sell-ability over true worth? Panty & Stockings with Garterbelt is the show I have been waiting years for. It’s everything that I remember liking about anime. Art for art’s sake, fun for the hell of it and a no-holds-barred attitude that is refreshing in ways I have all but forgotten about. Like the shows that the TTGL team (and Imaishi) have been on before, it’s crazy to the nth power. Explosive action and crass comedy combine to make a show that is much more than enjoyable: it’s a necessity.
It’s been too long that we’ve been asked to make do with half-assed action shows (Heroman I’m looking at you) and told that anime should look a certain way. Kicking both ideas into the stratosphere, PnS says, “Fuck You!” on a refreshing level. I mean, the damn show is basically drawn in a Western style. I’m sure they did it because they believed that anime is what you make of it, it doesn’t need to fit some arbitrary model for other to appreciate. And like OverC said, they even used real models for the explosion scenes. It kind of reminds me of The Gorillaz’s “Plastic Beach” album, a concept that spanned four mediums: a music album, comics, a movie and interviews (of the albums characters) on online newspapers.
Ultimately the decision to watch this show is yours. From what we’ve already seen this show is a hit-or-miss, either you love it or you hate it. However, I suggest that if you watch it do so with a grain of salt and an open outlook. A sense of humor wouldn’t hurt either. :3

I wouldn’t call PanSuto the most original work in the world but lol, it’s definitely more fresh compared to the others in the fall lineup. At least I have a guarantee that it’ll keep me amused for the season. And I love the huge amount of profanity and sh*t. xD;

Thanks for the review! Actually it was mainly because of this that I gave Panty and Stocking a shot. And I have to say, this was pretty awesome. Different, and definitely not what I was expecting, but good.
Also really like how you did the review – I was able to read the review first and still thoroughly enjoy the episode. Some sites just do a play-by-play and it ruins the episode if you haven’t watched it yet.

I was a bit unenthusiastic about this show at the beginning, but it literally blew me away. It looks like an ordinary American cartoon, but the events and action and EVERYTHING in the episode was something that American cartoons wouldn’t be able to pull off so perfectly.
At last, I’m seeing something original, unique, crazy and aiming for being creative and mind-blowing, not just money-gathering. It WILL get a lot of sales, but the creators just allowed their wild imagination to take control, and that is like a breath of a fresh air to me.
Nothing else I can say about it, one must watch this show to understand. It’s amazing! I’m so glad that I’ve followed your advice, Cool-chan *_*

i think its about time someone in the anime industry did something like this. Western animation is known more for its creativeness, the type of wacky characters they come up with (i mean srsly, Flapjack and Spongebob to name a few), whereas anime is noted for its serious story telling potential. but PanSto doesnt really have a deep story, but it’s more complex than something we’d see from Western animation.

Chuck reminded me of Gir when I first saw him XD This review is as awesome & action-packed as the show haha, very cool.
Some girls on the egl lj comm were talking about the protein joke and I was like, “What, that was a joke?” and then they explained it to me… I wish they didn’t… “orz Anyway, yeah, this show is definitely not child-friendly!! Somehow I can recognize PnG as a Japanese production even without being told~^^ The atmosphere & style is just different from America cartoon (Both sides have their goodness but oh well, they are different :see )
