Villains are probably my favourite character types, if you couldn’t tell from me dedicating an entire article to them way back when I first started writing editorials. Deep down, everyone wants a sinister character to justify their own dark desires. When you see someone kicking puppies, you start to feel a little better about yourself, you know? Cheers to 2011’s number one villain – whoever that may be! I’m a bit sad that *I* didn’t make the list, but maybe next year. |

All hail villains. Main characters are awesome, but villains are even better! Somehow I’m fond of evil ruthless characters who don’t give a shit about everything but their own well-being. I’m pretty sure it’s all Overcooled’s influence. So yeah, here’s my favorite part of Metanorn Awards! Bring on those loveable evil jerks! |

Obviously these are the best characters right here. What is an anime without villains? NOTHING, THAT’S WHAT (….that or slice of life). Hell, half of the anime out there wouldn’t even exist without them. Villains are important! So anyways, on to the best evil characters of the year! |

Lurking in the shadows of every anime are the villains! You know the ones they are sneaky, liars, greedy and sadistic! Well some of these choices are, but you can not have a great hero who saves the world without having an evil face to smack around or someone that makes you scream I FREAKING HATE THEM! So behold the evil characters of 2011 |

Sure I like villains, but they have to be the BAMF hawt type that is also quite the intelligent mastermind. Yeah, I guess that I have high standards for a villain. Nevertheless, I do say, keep in mind these villains present are not all the horrific evil type. There’s actually a good variety of different villains featured in the list below and some might even surprise you…

[ 01 ] [ King of Night ] Kore wa Zombie desu ka? |

| Take one part zombie mix in a heavy amount of magic and you basically have the King of night! The main villain in the Kore wa zombie story aside from a certain evil magical girl named Kyouko. Not the one from Madoka but close. But under all that darkness and undead power was the heart of someone that just wanted to be loved by Yuu. During the final showdown with Aikawa, we learned he wasn’t truly evil but just lonely and wanted to move on… he even loved penguins!

| He seems harmless at first. It’s just a stuffed animal, after all, so there’s no way it could do any harm. Then you see it following you around asking “Wanna form a contract with me? ／人◕ ‿‿ ◕人＼” and SPOILER ALERT stealing souls. The extent of his evil knows no bounds, and he hides it all behind a perfect, furry, poker face. There is no other villain this year who can strike fear and rage into the hearts of otaku with just one look than Kyuubey. //.overcooled |

| From their arrival to the first on-screen killing, they have filled the screen with vile scenery and abhorrent dialogue. Caster was summoned by the perfect master Ryuunosuke, and both complete the killing spree pair like a match made in hell. Their priorities were set to killing even when Ryuunosuke wanted more quality than quantity. Caster got his wish to show off the ridiculous fixation over Saber being Joanne of Arc, screaming about Ryuunosuke’s new religion. Yeah, these two are cuckoo in the head and everyone knows it.

[ 04 ] [ Mistletine ] Yumekui Merry |

At first glance Mistletine looks like an innocent flower girl who wants to give you a warm hug, until you piss her off and she tries to rip you apart. In the world of Yumekui Merry, Mistletine is a huge threat, because her main objective is to eat your dreams for a snack and kill the dream demon inside of you. Doing so destroys your dreams leaving you a mindless zombie with no desires or goals in life. My advice is to avoid this girl at all costs and you would be perfectly fine! Just don’t fall asleep…

Hinata is basically your stereotypical evil twin guy who wants ALL THE POWER EVER for no real reason and thinks that everyone is inferior (blah, blah, etc). However, the guy made monocles cool (which is pretty evil of him). Plus his seiyuu is FukuJun, so that automatically makes him a great villain.

From day one with Blood-C I think everyone out there already thought this guy was evil thanks to the coffee and special Guimauve he made for Saya. Well, I know I thought there was something screwy with him, at first glance he seems so harmless, but he has lots of secrets to hide from Saya and the other characters.

She is so great in so many ways. Let’s start from the least to most important. First, she’s the reincarnation of a Fox Spirit. Second, since she’s a fox spirit, so her weapon is obviously her tails…. And those tails can hide fans very well. Third, she’s a guro lesbian who likes to suck out livers straight from teenagers’ mouth. Fourth, she managed to get herself pregnant without the existence of sperm. There are reasons, but scientifically that’s a miracle. And last, even when at the verge of losing her battles, she did not let go of that square student suitcase that she always carried EVERYWHERE. Even when it’s obvious that the suitcase is a bother. So yeah, she’s awesome.

Oh hey there Kenmi! Just what the hell happened to you? Why did you become so damn evil! Then again just take a look at him, he really looks so freaking evil! The one thing Kenmi always craved was ultimate power. He wanted to be just like Knight and Alma but he went about it all wrong. In the end Kenmi transformed himself into a random giant crystal dragon, which did not win him any cool points and honestly it just made him look really dumb. Better luck next time bro, oh wait that might be kind of hard….

When I see him, I don’t see him as a villain. I see him as a character that needs to be pitied, but I can’t bring myself to pity him. He was an irresponsible lover and a father. He’s the type of friend who would sleep with your lover (Oh hey, he did!). He deserved what he got. However, his treatment towards the North Maiden and his true goal made me wonder whether he’s really evil or he’s just emotionally unstable. And unfortunately, I think it’s the latter.

| I have so many memories about Kihara, he was the only other character besides Touma to beat the living crap out of Accelerator! When you first see him, you instantly think evil. Kihara is a twisted scientist who comes complete with a killer tattoo and a wicked weapon to disable Accelerator’s super powers. We can’t say he never came prepared for battle, although in the end poor Kihara had a one way trip to the moon thanks to Index’s singing that gave Accelerator an amazing power up…

This guy. The justice-obsessed guy who kills other villains with his blue fire powers just because he can. He was a pretty decent villain himself since he was a major force against what Kotetsu stood for. There was a weird confusion with his morality at the end of the series (since he was helping Kotetsu), but I’m sure the second season will bring back his evil-ness.

Ahh yes Kanade Suzutsuki. Any fan of Mayo Chiki can probably recall every suggestive scene she was involved in. While she might not want to kill anyone or crave some mystical super powers, she really loves to screw with your mind just as Kinjirou, because he was pushed into some strange situations with Kanade. Or would all the guys out there want to be in Kinjirou’s shoes? I will raise a hand to that…Who else is with me!?

I hate Maverick. Hate, hate, HATE him. He ruined Barnaby’s life and tried to kill all of the heroes, all while being a conniving snake and controlling them from the shadows. He’s a hideous scumbag that everyone who watches the show unanimously hates. A villain that makes me THIS enraged is worthy of being a nominee.

When we first get introduced to Kyouko, she appears to be a harmless moe girl!. She even develops a small crush on Ayumu. But who could really think this character had another side to her? That Yandere side, but it is thanks to Kyouko’s actions that led to Ayumu transforming into a walking corpse. I still think of Kyouko as being the very first “evil” Magical girl I have seen.

| He’s quite electrifying, is he not? The ghost of Penguindrum with a similar vibe similar to Utena’s Akio, Sanetoshi was a very mysterious character who slowly, but surely asserted his role in the series as villain, going so far as to recruit Kanba to put the world “back on track”. Sanetoshi will live on forever and ever as a great villain for the cast of Mawaru Penguindrum. Love him or hate him we can probably all agree that Sanetoshi has some electrifying pink hair! Seriously amazing…

He wanted to burn down the whole DAMN WORLD just so he could be together with his sons and finish the biasness towards demons but c’mon, get real oldman, it’s not that easy. Red hair, cool clothes and amazing magical powers with a wicked personality. Zakuro wants to do one and only thing: destroy the town and take back her undead friend Rin. But is she truly evil? If you have seen the set of OVAs you quickly learn there is more to Zakuro than she wants to reveal.

The indecisive assassin, and a tool of church who is still in search of his purpose of life. On the outside, he seems to be a normal priest who was coaxed into the magus ways, being called upon by the Holy Grail to participate in its fourth war but on the inside, he’s a mean, killing machine, who is understood by no one (according to him); though, I think Gilgamesh has pegged him right in seeking entertainment from others misery. He’s a bad guy in making and his coldness and pure calculation gives him away.

We’re raving about villains now? LOL. Now I’ve seen everything.
Kanade Suzutsuki: A sadistic dominatrix-like queen who doesn’t care who or what crosses her path. She’ll use you as a means to an end for her schemes. I’d totally become a masochist and want to be in Jirou’s shoes if it means being around her. You can’t help but love her.
King of Night: You can’t be as cool as the king, baby. Months have passed and King of the Night is still cool as ever! He was an awesome villain to have around. He’d even invite his enemies to dinner.
Hinata Kurenai: We have another badass here and this one wears a monacle. There were a lot of fans around everytime hinata was on screen. Is it a bad thing to root for the bad guys? Even when he’s this awesome? I don’t think.
Kyoko: Another female villain I wouldn’t bending backwards for. I knew she was trouble from the start but couldn’t shake her off my mind. She was so hot and evil (Should those two things be put together?). She was even hotter lashing out as a yandere with maso shoujo powers, a vampire ninja cloak and vampire glowing eyes.
Kihara Amata: Who says you can’t be smart AND strong when you’re an evil genius? It just doubles the terror. Kihara is the only one other than Touma I can see kicking Accelerator’s ass all over the place. And he died like a champ when he was into a shooting star. Team Kihara is blasting off!!
Fumito Nanahara: Let what happen to Blood-C Saya be a lesson to all lead characters, be they male or female. Never trust people who are too friendly, polite and overly charitable. They always tend to be complete psychos underneath and they’ll stab you in the back.
Caster/Ryuunosuke: These two are so sickening that they certainly have my permission to die at any time. I’d love to see both of these murdering pedophiles six feet under. It’s just a matter of time.

Wow, this poll really shows my true colours as an anime fan. OK. These were some of my top faves of 2011. Tamayura. Ikoku Meiro, Usagi Drop, and Hanasaku Iroha. None of them had anyone remotely villainous. Since I think I only watched a few of these shows, I don’t think I’m even qualified to vote. I consider Kyubey to be more akin to a force of nature, and Sanatoshi to be more a facilitator than a true villain.
BTW. The inclusion of Suzutsuki Kanade is just one heck of a weird curve-ball….
Souma? Yeah, I know that’s a big joke. He is what my ancestors would call an “arsehole”. Besides he bought Yamada a bear. That is not a villain by any stretch.

Caster & Ryuunosuke are awesome. They were already great in the early episodes, but the god talk in the recent episode was amazingly fun and filled with twisted views.

Hm, I think Kotomine would have to take the cake for most villianous, simply because he doesn’t have a goal yet still behaves in an ‘evil’ way. Mindless evil-doing serving no purpose is just evil, much like the Joker, though having said this…I’m surprised to see no characters from Mirai Nikki…I’m pretty at least one yandere deserves a special guest appearance, lest we all die in the name of Yukkii…
And yes, Suzutsuki Kanade is more sadistic than evil so bit unexpected to see her…though if she was evil…eep

I really can’t see anyone other than Kyubey winning this one. His “Make a contract with me” became a bona fide meme that has barely begun to slow down. Being the baddie in what is easily the most popular and highly lauded anime of 2011 in the aniblogosphere helps, too, of course.

Hagoromo Gitsune, Maverik-san, and Zakuro almost got votes out of me but in the end the other villains were just too charismatic and/or bastardly.

I voted for Kyuubey, Fumito, Reiji, and Satan – but out of the four, I think the only really evil one is Fumito. In TV Tropes terms, he’s the only one who is a Complete Monster (as far as we know, anyway – there’s not much revealed about his motives yet). I mean, Kyuubey wasn’t evil, he was just really… logical IMHO. Reiji has this unstable thing going for him (he’d be just a bastard otherwise, but still a pitiable bastard nonetheless), while Satan (not canon!Satan, of course) is, as you put it, a “loving husband”.
Also, as for the special mention… CHARLOTTE. She was the cutest witch (in her plush form anyway), and I really liked her level in the Grief Syndrome doujin game. She is, without doubt, my most favorite witch in Madoka Magica. I’d vote for her if she was one of the main contenders.
