2011 Year-Ender: Supporting Male Character

Fifth in line: Supporting Male Character nominations for 2011. Vote Away~

For every main character out there in anime they have need to have a side character to help push things along, or someone to generally use as a shield to defend against girls, monsters and assist in solving the big mysteries. Either way a supporting character is there to lend a hand when you need it the most! So here is a list of a few big shot supporting males from this year.
Man, sometimes sidekicks are really underrated. There are so many side characters that have played really important roles in a lot of shows and the main characters get all the rep! Some of the greatest characters ever are the supporting characters, the ones who are seemingly behind the scenes and have the greatest influence upon the protagonists. Thus, it only makes sense to give them the credit that they deserve! And for 2011, we’ve got quite the list of awesome male supports.
What more can I say that has not already been said by Fosh and Zabo? There’s been a good amount of memorable animes out this year and with each comes some sort of supporting character that has helped the leads get to where they are. Maybe not all are good morally but even so, they can change the main character somehow and even the motion of the story. So here is a list of supporting male characters. It was hard to come up with a list, but we managed.

As an update, so far the following Year-Ender posts are out and voting is still open:

The list is in no particular order. So check out these supporting dudes and vote for the best~!

[ 01 ] [ Kiyomasa “Crow” Senji ] Deadman Wonderland

This guy is easily one of the best characters in Deadman Wonderland for a few reasons… Besides being a bad ass all the time, he was really there to push Ganta into fighting! Without Crow around to motivate Ganta, he would be so screwed fast.

VAKatou Masayuki ]
[ EXTRA ] Spoiler Video: Show ▼

[ 02 ] [ Akutabe ] Yondemasu yo, Azazel-san

Akutabe, oh how I love your cynical and cunning ways. You never fail to amuse the audience with your epic BAMF skillz. Even though we know that you’re a devil deep down inside, I’m sure you have the girls wrapped around your finger. This guy is what makes the world of Azazel-san function the right way… with fear of the boss.

VANamikawa Daisuke ]
[ EXTRA ] Spoiler Video: Show ▼

[ 03 ] [ Akira Hattori ] Bakuman

Ashirogi Muto would have never come this far had Hattori not been there to give them all of his advice and encouragement. He’s shaped them into a pair of incredible manga-ka with his abilities as an editor. Sure, he’s not the most good looking character out there with his bulging eyes and thick lips, but there’s no denying that he demands respect. You just can’t hate Hattori.

VA [ Tone Kentarou ]

[ 04 ] [ Sanada Ryuu ] Kimi ni Todoke S2

He’s the chill friend, that’s for sure. Kazehaya gets a little carried away with his emotions and Chizuru goes a little nuts sometimes, so they need somebody to keep them grounded and Ryuu fits the bill! Though he’s quiet and may not do much, nobody can deny that Kimi ni Todoke just wouldn’t be the same without him.

VA [ Nakamura Yuuichi ]
[ EXTRA ] Spoiler Video: Show ▼

[ 05 ] [ Souichirou Mikuni ] [C] The Money of Soul and Possibility Control

Mikuni is great side character because he shows Kimimaro the ropes to batting with the C money. He is a great teacher for the first few battles, but later in the series Kimiamro has to face off against Mikuni in a heated one on one battle! But in the end Mikuni really wanted to make Kimimaro follow in his shoes to being rich and famous in the world of C.

VA [ Hosomi Daisuke ]
[ EXTRA ] Spoiler Video: Show ▼

[ 06 ] [ Hashida “Daru” Itaru ] Steins;Gate

Who could ever forget Daru? Sure, this dude was a bit of a perv, but, without him Okarin would have pretty much been screwed. As the super hacker of the operation, Daru was able to get the lab members pretty dang far. Nerd swag~

VA [ Seki Tomokazu ]

[ 07 ] [ Kuga Aki ] Kamisama Dolls

Ohhh Mr Aki! The misunderstood “bad guy” Sure he has white hair but he is not really evil! Or is he? Whenever this guy was around any of the main characters, they always freaked out… I still think its his hair color! Why does it scare them so? Besides being kind of creepy, Aki went through some rough moments, like spending most of his time kidnapped by the girls. Maybe he enjoyed it? Or likes getting tied up?! Who knows…

VA [ Kimura Ryohei ]
[ EXTRA ] Spoiler Video: Show ▼

[ 08 ] [ Hisakawa “Poppo” Tetsudo ] Ano Hi Mita Hana no Namae wo Bokutachi wa Mada Shiranai

Jinta is pretty damn lucky to have a friend like Poppo. He was the first to believe Jinta about Menma and jumped headlong into helping out with whatever was needed to help her move on. Not only so, but he’s an amazingly super hilarious and happy-go-lucky guy considering all the emotional trauma he’s gone through. I love this guy!

VA [ Kondou Takayuki ]

[ 09 ] [ Orito ] Kore wa Zombie Desu ka?

The famous sidekick to our undead friend Ayumu… and he happens to be a giant pervert. He is also friends of Kyouko who we find out is really a very evil magical girl. But really he is always there to back up his friend! Even though he has no idea about the whole zombie life style, but is extremely jealous over his harem of Haruna, Yuu and Seras.

VA [ Yoshino Hiroyuki ]

[ 10 ] [ Hinamura “Yondaime” Soichirou ] Kamisama no Memochou

HNNNNNGGGG~ YONDAIME~ This guy is a total BADASS. He adopted Narumi into his bro-hood and helped him grow into a stronger individual. It was nice to see how close they got by the end of it all. Also, Yondaime’s got a surprisingly soft side too, because, seriously, what kind of gang leader sews like a pro? AN AWESOME ONE, THAT’S WHAT.

VA [ Ono Daisuke ]

[ 11 ] [ Keiju Tabuki ] Mawaru Penguindrum

Wow. When Penguindrum started, I only expected Tabuki to be Ringo’s love-obsession. Or fate-obsession. Whatever. He quickly proved to be a vital character as he, too, had his own obsession (with Ringo’s sister, no less). He may not have necessarily been helpful to the Takakura’s, but he was important in that he represented the notion that childhood traumas never really die. Sad, isn’t it?

VA [ Ishida Akira ]

[ 12 ] [ Tsuchimikado Motoharu ] Toaru Majutsu no Index II

Whenever Touma is in any kind of trouble, Tsuchimikado is always there to help. Besides being a friend, he is also a very skilled magician. We finally get to see him put his magic to use in the second season of Index. Tsuchimikado is also an informant from the magical side of Index, he drops hints and warnings to Touma whenever the church side prepares to make a move.

VA [ Katsu Anri ]

[ 13 ] [ Inga ] UN-GO

So, really, Inga is kind of…a he/she. For the most part, however, he’s in his boy form and that’s how I view him. Inga’s a pretty awesome sidekick, especially for Yuuki Shinjuurou, the notorious “Defeated Detective.” His antics are hysterical and he’s super adorable. It also helps that he can turn into a woman and, not to mention, eat souls. It’s kind of a strange combination of things that Inga can do, but it’s what makes him so invaluable. He was my favorite character in Un-Go, that’s for sure.

VA [ Toyosaki Aki ]
[ EXTRA ] Spoiler Video: Show ▼

[ 14 ] [ Tanuma Kaname ] Natsume Yuujinchou San

This guy is somewhat similar to Natsume because he can feel spirits near him but lacks the same ability to see them. During the series, Tanuma grows really close to Natsume becoming a close friend that tries his best to understand Natsume’s problem with demons. Most people think Natsume is just crazy! Tanuma actually believes him and sticks by his side through all the painful and happy moments.

VA [ Horie Kazuma ]

[ 15 ] [ Gilgamesh / Archer ] Fate/Zero

What can I say, this is one hawt BAMF and he knows it. But with that aside, we all know how conniving this King of Heroes is. Not only does Gilgamesh boss his way around, he also contributes a good amount to the schemes underway in the background around Kirei and Tokiomi.

VA [ Seki Tomokazu ]
[ EXTRA ] Spoiler Video: Show ▼

[ 16 ] [ Satou Jun ] Working’!!

Satou! The tall, blonde and professional chef! This guy is always in the kitchen cooking up a storm. But he enjoys to mess with Popura often fixing her hair whenever he is stressed out or having to deal with Inami. Besides doing all of that, he is there to help out his secret crush Yachiyo. One day they will get together, we can hope! So keep fighting for your love Satou!

VA [ Ono Daisuke ]

[ 17 ] [ Tanemura “Kou” Kouichi ] Hanazaku Iroha

As the love interest of Ohana, the titular protagonist of Hanasaku Iroha, Ko played an important role, even if he was a bit of a weakling at the start. As the series progressed, however, he developed a stronger backbone, so to speak. That being said, he’s always been there for Ohana, even with the awkwardness that came with his initial confession.

VA [ Kaji Yuki ]

  1. Overcooled says:

And now we wait for people to complain that their favourite character is missing.

    • Jrow says:

There is one character, but since I could’ve helped out here, I’d rather not say his name and take the responsibility for not adding him in. Maybe others will know who I mean.

      • Foshizzel says:

Luffy right? IS IT LUFFY? Buhahahah

Np Awesome-Jrow we know you still love us….

      • Ness says:

Yeah Jrow, if you added in, the list would have been better XP hahah. We know you’re recovering from sickness, so I forgive you.

  2. Jrow says:

I’ve been catching up with Yuujinchou (1 ep away from finishing San) and I really like Tanuma. The mirror arc was really great, and if there was only one vote to give, I’d vote Tanuma. Him and Poppo might be tied for the most truest sense of “supporting” male characters this year.

Crow, Mikuni, Aki, Poppo, Yondaime and Gilgamesh were my other votes.

    • Foshizzel says:

Tanuma is the best friend Natsume is so luck to have him around, yes the best moment was the mirror episode! You really got to see how much Tanuma cares for his friend.

Crow, Mikuni, Aki, Poppo, Yondaime and Gilgamesh = Hell ya! Great choices right there xD

  3. Moni Chan says:

AKI AKI AKI how can forget that sexy son of a unseen anime character

I voted 4 hattori 2 cuz he really knows his manga

  4. BlackBriar says:

Here are my favorites for Supporting Male Character:

Kiyomasa “Crow” Senji: Senji was already badass when he was introduced but got even more when he did his “Crow Claw: Invisible Black”. Sslice!!

Kuga Aki: This psycho is badass. ‘nuff said.

Gilgamesh/Archer: Who doesn’t like someone who manipulates people and enjoys their suffering from the sidelines?

Tsuchimikado Motoharu: I usually don’t like people who play both sides but I’ll make an exception this time.
Orito from Kore wa Zombie Desu ka?: This reigning four-eyed pervert rules. (Fosh, have you been waiting for an opportunity to put that screenshot? LOL, anyway, he’s a perfect match for Boku wa’s Rika though I doubt he can handle her. She’s way out of his league).

    Hinamura “Yondaime” Soichirou

    Souichirou Mikuni from [C]

    • Foshizzel says:

Crow! That guy is pure awesome in Deadman, really a bad ass and without him Ganta probably would be so dead…Check Crow out in the manga such a cool character. And remember kids! SLICEEEEEEE~

Kuga Aki- Ladies man! Gets kidnapped by a crazy scientist and Yandere Kana Hanazawa <3

Gilgamesh/Archer- The kind of dude we all want to party with seriously he would be a lot of fun, but he wouldn't want just guys around he needs a saber! xDD

Tsuchimikado Motoharu- Yeah that is true he plays the science side and magical sides all too well...I read a chapter in the novel with him! Wow is he a bad ass...they really make him kind of boring in the anime...

Orito- FK YA! That guy made me laugh so much, yeah his mind is in the gutter all the time imagine if he met with Rika? They would be perfect for each other.

  5. akagami says:

I voted for three on that list that I felt made an impact on my enjoyment of the anime:
    Ryu (so calm and cool)
Tsuchimikado Motoharu (glasses got it going)
Satou Jun (his bullying of Popura is fun to watch)

    I would have added:
Hiroomi Souma (Working!!’) – blackmailing is an art
Mephisto Pheles (Ao no Exorcist) – very entertaining… I still don’t know exactly who’s side he is on (besides his own)
Sakamoto Yuuji (Baka to Test to Shoukanjuu Ni!) – him and Akihisa make an awesome team
Kouki (Usagi Drop) – so cute! (boys being boys)

  6. Renn says:

Good list as always. 😀 Voted for Ryuu, Aki, Poppo, Tabuki, Inga, Tanuma, and Gil. My personal favorites would have to be Sky High (Tiger & Bunny) and Kariya Matou (Fate/Zero) though.

  7. skylion says:

Soutou Jun is one of my favs. I’m large and I’m blond. Nuff said, eh?

And Ko-chan. You made Ohana believe in herself. Good on you, lad.

  8. Namika says:

Crow-chaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaan~ <3 How can you be so cool? TT^TT

  9. anaaga says:

    Akutabe is so UNDERRATED

If i understanded well, this is a support character ranking, so why is Gilgamesh in this list ? I think he is more a main antagonist than a supporting or secondary character.
