Metanorn Readers’ Choice Awards 2013 Nomination Call

Update: Deepest apologies from the organizers because we could not finish the polls on time and it became too late for actual launch.

Another year is over and done with and that means it is now time for exciting awards on Metanorn and just like last year we are ready to take in your nominations! I hope you are prepared to rack your mind and if you need help finding out what aired in 2013, check out our list under spoiler tags of this post.

Where has 2013 gone to?! It was just a blur for me when I think about it but while compiling the list of series and movies that released last year, I have to say, it was very happening. However, that is usual with many developments with new studios, creative staff and talent enriching the industry. But of course, depending on what you like, this opinion can be different, which is totally fine! This pretty much sums up the purpose of our awards to know Metanorn’s readers’/lurkers’ personal taste to arrive at a popular consensus rather than just the team members pitching in only. We’d rather have a larger range than us.

Therefore, I’ll keep this one short, so let me lay the groundwork quickly. We are following the same framework as last year but with less awardsYou have twenty awards to nominate choices for, broken down into four major categories as below. You can nominate five choices maximum for each award (minimum is up to your preference). This post will be active till 18th January, 2014, after which we will publish category-wise polls for voting. Do note some additional pointers:

  • We are only considering anime that finished airing in 2013. Therefore, all carry-over shows from Fall’13 will not be considered and their nominations will not be accepted.
  • As most of us do not live in Japan, we get to watch the movies after their DVD/BDs are released. Thus, our list comprise of movies whose DVD/BDs have been released in 2013, including the titles that were not included in 2012 movie nominations.
  • If our list is missing out a series/movie that you want to nominate, which follows above criteria, please ping us in the comments and we will update accordingly.

Now, get those nominations coming in per category and award. I would also like to encourage our lurkers to de-lurk and participate in this once-a-year activity. Let’s get set go!

Best OST nominations: Freezing Vibration, Gatchaman Crowds, Attack on Titan, Yozakura Quartet & Toaru Kagaku no Railgun S

    • JPNIgor says:

I really wanted to put Tsukiyomi and Shissou Ginga on my nominations for Best ED, too TT.TT

    • skylion says:

I had wanted to put in Roundabout, but it felt so odd putting in a song I’ve know for like…a very very long time.

      • Sumairii says:

I have to agree with this sentiment. It’s always a peculiar incident when an anime decides to use an English song… The last time I remember it happening was the Higashi no Eden (Eden of the East) OP. I’m almost tempted to suggest that such songs shouldn’t be qualified.

        • Kyokai says:

As Roundabout was officially used by the production house, there is no rule we can set for not nominating it so if you want to, skylion, you can. 🙂

Though, as I’m at the beginning of the list, if you have commented with you five choices then this becomes a moot point.

  2. BlackBriar says:

2013 went by quickly. I’ve waited all year for this post and luckily I decided to hold onto this anime list I made some time ago (A long time ago. I came here prepared, baby!!). But with so many categories in one shot and so few, careful choices to make, you guys are making me put more effort into this than I anticipated. Now the choices will have to spread out. *shakes fist while impressed* 😀

    Music Category:

    Best Opening:

OP2: “Out of Control” by Nothing’s Carved in Stone

Attack on Titan (Shingeki no Kyojin):
OP1: “Guren no Yumiya” by Linked Horizon

Arpeggio of Blue Steel: Ars Nova:
OP: “Savior of Song” by Nano feat. MY FIRST STORY

    OP2: “Denshin∞ Unchained” by FREE

    Kamisama no Inai Nichiyoubi:
    OP: “Birth” by Eri Kitamura

    Best Ending:

ED1: “Namae no nai Kaibutsu” by EGOIST

ED2: “Through All Eternity ~ en no kizuna ~ (Through All Eternity ~縁の絆~)” by ayami

Attack on Titan (Shingeki no Kyojin):
ED1: “Utsukushiki Zankoku na Sekai” by Yoko Hikasa
ED2: “great escape” by Cinema Staff

    Kakumeiki Valvrave:
ED1: “Boku ja nai” by angela

Side note: Aside from picking out our top 5 for each category, it’s no problem if we put some honorable mentions on the sideline, right? Just a little clarification since I’m sure everyone has more than 5 favorite choices.

    • Kyokai says:

You can add your honourable mentions but they won’t be counted if the count for any category is over five.

      • BlackBriar says:

Well, it’s too late to put honorable at this point but I can’t wait to see the posts where the choices have to be made. Heads are going to spin.

  3. CarVac says:

Uhh, Rebellion’s Blu-ray isn’t out yet. But it holds some of my top spots here anyway (spoilered; seriously, don’t click on them if you haven’t watched yet!).

    Opening: Sister’s Noise (Railgun S OP 1)

Ending: Baby Sweet Berry Love (Henneko ED)

OST: Kyousou Giga, Madoka Rebellion (waiting on the actual soundtrack for the latter)

    Studio: JC Staff

    Superpower: hair brushing (GJ-bu)

    Supporting Male:
    Lucifer (Hataraku Maou-sama)

    Supporting Female:

    (Madoka Rebellion)Show ▼

    Lead Male:
    Katsuragi Keima (TWGOK)

    Lead Female:
    Misaka Mikoto (Railgun S)

    Anime of the year:
    Uchouten Kazoku

    Movie of the year:
Madoka Rebellion. Even though the Blu-ray isn’t out. None of the movies I watched this year was particularly good in my opinion.

  4. JPNIgor says:

    Ok, here we go \o/

    Best Opening:

“Crowds” by White Ash – Gatchaman Crowds
“May I Help You?” by Kayano & Mai Nakahara & Aki Toyosaki – Servant x Service
“reunion” by ClariS – OreImo 2
“Take your Way” by livetune – Devil Survivor 2 The Animation
“abnormalize” by Ling Tosite Sigure – Psycho-Pass (I would nominate both of Psycho-Pass’s music if I could =/)

    Best Ending (sooo haaaaaaard ><')

"Que Sera, Sera" by fhána – Uchouten Kazoku
"Innocent Note" by Hajime Ichinose (Maaya Uchida) – Gatchaman Crowds
"Neguse" by Aya Suzaki – Tamako Market
"Namae no Nai Kaibutsu" by EGOIST – Psycho-Pass
"All Alone With You" by EGOIST – Psycho-Pass

GOOOOD I LOOOOVE EGOIST *-* Psycho-Pass was like, best Overall Music this whole year to me.

    Best OST:

Can’t really nominate here, since I rarely pay any attention to background music or care to see if a song is actually original or not.

    Best Seiyuu (both):

I can’t nominate here too. I don’t pay attention at all to staff and if I would nominate someone, it wouldn’t be for merit, but for fame, like HanaKana .-.

    Best Production Studio:

Kyoto Animation – Tamako Market and Kyoukai no Kanata
Shaft – Monogatari Series, Madoka the Movie and Sasami-san Ganbaranai
P.A. Works – Great job with RDG, Uchouten Kazoku and Nagi no Asukara
Wit Studio – What else from the studio behind Shingeki no Kyoujin?
Madhouse Studios – Kamisama no Inai Nichiyoubi and Chihayafuru S2

    Best Loli:

    Ebisugawa Kaisei from Uchouten Kazoku
    Ria-chan from OreImo 2?
    Illya from Prisma Illya…
    Utsutsu-chan from Gatchaman Crowds
Ai from Kamisama no Inai Nichiyoubi

    Best Bishie:

Don’t watch too many shows with bishies, but I do have some nominees.

    Ikki – Amnesia
    Shin – Amnesia
    Haruka Nanase – Free!
    Asahina Tsubaki – Brothers Conflict
Aonuma Shun (adult version) – Shin Sekai Yori

    Best Bijin

    Benten – Uchouten Kazoku
    Kashiwazaki Sena – Haganai Next
    Maou – Maoyuu
    Chocolat – NouCome?
    Frey – Machine-Doll wa Kizutsukanai

    Best Super Power

    Uhhh… Let’s see.

Shin Sekai Yori‘s psychic powers were pretty awesome.
Then there was Makishima Shougo’s ability to have a white hue the whole time in Psycho-Pass… though I’m not sure if it is a super power…
Fate kaleid‘s card-related power (pretty badass with Illya)
Myoue (dad)/Inari’s “create anything” power from Kyousougiga. Like, he’s a god.
Aaaaand Kanbara Akihito’s half-youmu powers from Kyoukai no Kanata… Mirai’s only a short distance behind him…

    Best Mecha:

    Not a fan of Mecha Animes… I could mention…

    Robotics;Notes’s arachnid-like mecha.
    AKB0048’s mechas
    Hajime’s mecha from Gatchaman Crowds
Sarasaki Tatenashi’s mecha com Infinite Stratos 2
    And that’s it.

    Best MetaFap Shows

Hentai Ouji to Warawanai Neko (though not really fap material)
    Photo Kano
Sakurasou no Pet na Kanojou (not really fap material, again)
    MaouYuu (again…)
    Hagure Yuusha no Estetica

    Best Villain/Anti-Hero:

    Berg-Katze – Gatchaman Crowds (also, best cross-dresser)
    Makishima Shougo – Psycho-Pass
The Anguished One – Devil Survivor 2
Monokuma – Danganronpa (what’s better than a teddy bear as villain?)
Annie Leonhart – Shingeki no Kyoujin (she was a good character TT.TT)

    Best Romantic Couples

Wanted to put Golden Time’s couple here e.e’

Haruto x Asuka, Kimi no Iru Machi (they worked much better than Haruto x Yuzuki)
    Maou x Yuusha, Maouyuu
Kotoura x Manabe, Kotoura-san (THEY ARE CANON, RIGHT?!)
Koyomi x Hitagi, Monogatari Series S2 (Hitagi End took this couple to the limit)
Haruki x Touma, White Album 2

    Best Male in Leading Role

    Kanbara Akihito, Kyoukai no Kanata
    Shinya Kougami, Psycho-Pass
    Hikigaya Hachiman, SNAFU

    Shin Sekai Yori

    Movie of the Year

    Steins;Gate The Movie
    Hanasaku Iroha: Home Sweet Home
    Nerawareta Gakuen

    • skylion says:

You like EGOIST as much as I like nano.RIPE and ChouCho.

      • JPNIgor says:

I like nano.RIPE as well, but sometimes the vocal feels a little annoying =/ I liked their Hanasaku Iroha’s songs better than on Non Non Biyori.

        • Namika says:

And what about Bakuman’s opening? From the 3rd season ^^

          • JPNIgor says:

Damn, I forgot about Bakuman… Sometimes it feels so far away, since the first season was so long ago. It was pretty fine as well, though I liked the second opening better.

            • Namika says:

To each his own. I was really disappointed when they replaced the first one, for example. It made you really feel that this is the end of it. Those feels TT^TT

            • JPNIgor says:

I was really disappointed when they replaced monochrome rainbow, the ending for the second season.

    • akagami says:

      Yay, another Golden Time fan!

      • JPNIgor says:

Really nice. I couldn’t dream that one day I would like Kouko so much.

      • Kyokai says:

Just a note guys, Golden Time and Nagi no Asukara doesn’t qualify because it’s still airing. Rest is fine.

        • BlackBriar says:

That’s the sad thing about two cour shows that start airing in Fall and that a year of time is needed before they can be nominated.

          • Kyokai says:

And when the year ends, most of the people just forget nominating. Sad, really.

  5. Karakuri says:

    Best OP:
Mousou Express by Hanazawa Kana – Monogatari S2
Guren no Yumiya by Linked Horizon – Shingeki no Kyojin
Bloody Stream by Coda – Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure
    V.I.P by SID – Magi
    Zoetrope by Yanagi Nagi- Amnesia

I’ll have to wait a year before I can nominate X-encounter OTL

    Best ED:
Wareta Ringo by Taneda Risa – Shin Sekai Yori
Zetsubousei: Hero Chiryouyaku by Soraru – Danganronpa
all alone with you by EGOIST – Psycho-Pass

    Best OSTs:
Gatchman Crowds OST by Iwasaki Taku
    Danganronpa OST by Takada Masafumi
Shingeki no Kyojin OST by Sawano Hiroyuki
Shin Sekai Yori OST by Komori Shigeo

    Best Male Seiyuu:
    Kaji Yuki
    Kamiya Hiroshi (of course)
Sakurai Takahiro was also pretty impressive in Uchouten Kazoku…

    Best Female Seiyuu:
Hanazawa Kana is such an obvious choice
Taneda Risa also did really well this year~

    Best Studio:
    …I don’t even know.
A-1 and Madhouse? Yeah, let’s go with that.
SHAFT too, for being (as lvlln once said) “spectacularly lazy”.

    • BlackBriar says:

I’ll have to wait a year before I can nominate X-encounter OTL

Hahaha, I wish I could nominate stuff from Tokyo Ravens, Strike the Blood, Kill la Kill and Log Horizon. Too bad we’ll have to wait a year. It’s already a relief that I could nominate Psycho-Pass, Magi S1 and Zetsuen no Tempest so I’ll make do with those.

      • skylion says:

I would really like to nominate Your*Song from Log Horizon. So much feels.

        • JPNIgor says:

Yeees *-* That ending is so cute. I would nominate Tokyo Ravens’ OP and ED as well as Kill la Kill OP. I’m actually glad that they couldn’t make it this year. I would have more options and my head would be waaay more confused than it is as of now.

          • BlackBriar says:

I’d nominate all that you mentioned along with the OP and ED for Strike the Blood. If you’re watching the show, you’ll find that they’re awesome.

            • JPNIgor says:

I watch it as well, though it’s a show that I particularly don’t stop to watch the OP and ED. I mean, they’re nice, but not as addicting as others like Kyousougiga’s ED, for example.

Oh, I remembered about Nagi no Asukara’s songs as well. The new OP and ED are particularly remarkable.

            • Kyokai says:

Well, there’s always next year 😉

            • BlackBriar says:

That’s what makes it so painful. We have to wait a year! *sobs*

  6. BlackBriar says:

    • Kyokai says:

Good job on adding all their character titles as well! :3

      • BlackBriar says:

Thanks! I was surprised after finishing it. I didn’t think the list would get so insanely huge but with Kana Hanazawa, hers is expected to be big.

  7. skylion says:

I really find making these sorts of lists rather hard. Thou I do have favorites, picking them always feels bad. I hate to leave even one behind. But I will show willing…

    • JPNIgor says:

Kills me not to put Daisy as well =.=’ Psycho-Pass took half my ED spots.

      • BlackBriar says:

Two awesome OPs and EDs. Psycho-Pass is a heavy hitter not only in the story and character development department but also music. A good candidate for anime of the year.

        • JPNIgor says:

Yeeeees TT.TT I can’t wait for season 2. EGOIST is just too awesome, they made me love Guilty Crown through music alone.

          • BlackBriar says:

Don’t forget. Not only is Psycho-Pass getting a second season but also a movie.

To show how much both shows have in common, they were created with the help of I.G Production and have EGOIST involved in their music.

            • JPNIgor says:

Well, they do have a lot in common staff-wise. Fortunately, Production I.G. went right in everything they went wrong in GC. Though I do think GC had a better animation and more scenery-porn, and a world with as much potential as Psycho-Pass.

And it will get a MOVIE?! *-* I’m SO happy, you can’t even imagine.

        • Namika says:

Yeah, totally right about Psycho-Pass. But it’s a little too mature, so not a lot of people will be able to enjoy it to the full extend. :/

          • BlackBriar says:

True. The series is already getting a TV MA rating when the Funimation English dub gets released March 11th 2014. Which is natural considering everything we’ve seen.

            • Namika says:

And BOY I can’t wait for the dub! Though I’ve seen the trailer and wasn’t impressed at all ( I know, it was just a trailer, but still). Akane had one line in the whole thing, if I remember correctly. And it sounded TERRIBLE. -_- I just hope that the dub will be as good as I expect it to be. It would be heartbreaking to see such a show ruined by a bad dub TT^TT

          • JPNIgor says:

Yep, it will be underappreciated when/if it gets to the west. It’s theme is heavy and there’s gore since the first episode. It’s definitely not made for a broad audience.

            • Namika says:

I don’t think it will be THAT unappreciated, tbh. Yes, it won’t be as popular and talked-about as Titans or FMA, but it’s a generally good show, so I think it will be successful, just not that hyped.

            • JPNIgor says:

Underappreciated, because Psycho-Pass deserves a LOT more attention than it will get, even if it succeeds

            • Highway says:

To me, Psycho-Pass would fit in very well with the type of show that BBC America airs, not really corny enough for SyFy, but it fits in with the Copper, Sherlock, Doctor Who kind of feel for me.

    • Kyokai says:

No worries, I would definitely nominate Daisy if someone doesn’t for sure. One of my favourites of the season.

  8. skylion says:

    Special Category.

I like this sort of free for all. But making me pick five LOLis? What sort of madness is this!? (Same madness as the year before, yes)

LOLi Top Five (from each respective season)

    Kyousogiga, Koto

And there was so much I left out!

    • skylion says:

Before I get subjected to the Death Perception, I had better trim that list down.

      Shinobu Oshino (Queen!)
      Alice Cartlett

      • Di Gi Kazune says:

That is why I don’t make these lists… because Dejiko-sama will always be #1.

And TECHNICALLY, all the mental models from Aoki Hagane are Lolis (more like toddlers…)

        • skylion says:

In chronological age, but what is that to a Mental Model, we barely understand what the FoF Admiralty Code is, without devolving to broad sweeps.

        • Sumairii says:

To me, the actual age doesn’t matter so long as the appearance is that of a loli.

      • Kyokai says:

Good job on supressing your loli obsession for this. 😛

    • Di Gi Kazune says:

      Ro-Kyu-Bu actually means:

      Rori Kyutto Butto.

No more needs to be said.

    • skylion says:

Thanks for nominating “Your Voice”, I so wanted to do so my self but I had far to many choices, I’m a natural born sucker for EDs.

    • Highway says:

Oh rats, I forgot another of my favorite ED’s:

“Lovely Devil” from High School DxD New

    • JPNIgor says:

I just want to understand how you could not fill your spots for music… Teach me, pls? i.i

      • Highway says:

Well, first, I only nominate songs that haven’t been already nominated. Second, these are the ones I like more than just about any others, the ones I’ll make special effort to play. And there aren’t that many of them.

And some of the ones that I do make special effort to play just aren’t worthy of a ‘best’ title in anything. For instance, S-M-L from NouCome is fun to listen to, but the only ‘best’ it gets is “Best song made by 7 bands playing at the same time”.

And on top of all that, perhaps the best OPs and ED that I saw in anime this year aren’t eligible: “Triangular,” “Lion,” and “Northern Cross” from Macross Frontier. “Northern Cross” in particular is spectacular: Epic without trying (my problems with the AoT OPs is that they try too hard to be epic), evocative of its show, plus it’s so much an 80’s musical song.

I may fill in my last OP slot, tho, as I’ve remembered “Watashi no Bara wo Haminasai” by ALI PROJECT from Rozen Maiden. It has a wonderful techno carnival feel.

Strangely, your loli list I approve of completely. Since I physically hold Leticia Draculair’s Gift Card, it is spelt as so.

      • BlackBriar says:

Izayoi is one OP character I can definitely work with because he’s aware of himself and doesn’t try to steal the spotlight. Rather, he gives other people their time to shine.

I will fill in OST for fun: Prisma Illya, Henneko and Mondaiji in that order.

Oh yeah, Gene’i Taiyou slips in here as well even though I don’t own it (yet). Cerebrum has to win something.

    • BlackBriar says:

Gene’i Taiyou slips in here as well even though I don’t own it (yet).

All aboard the suffering train. With so much unhappiness in that show, I started thinking Gen Urobuchi had a hand in the story.

Want to see Eren x Mikasa being a cannon XD God I screwed up.

As long as implying turns something into cannon, Ichika is Laura’s wife in Infinite Stratos 2 and therefore, could make it to best couple of the year.

    • Kyokai says:

These two pairings are not canon (an official couple):
Eren Jaeger x Mikasa Ackerman (Attack on Titan)
Akina Hiizumi x Hime Yarizakura (Yozakura Quartet: Hana no Uta)

Further note to this special category, we will vet the nominations in terms of anime series so even if in a manga a certain pair is confirmed but that development has not happened in anime, we won’t consider it.
