Danganronpa 3: Zetsubou Hen – 05
All hail the queen.
It was a crazy week of work for me, but I finally have time to sit down and watch things go horribly wrong for the Danganronpa cast. Hooray. |
There was a rather large time skip, but it seems like nothing too important really happened. Hajime was busy being part of the Kamukura project (which conveniently for the story, hasn’t seemed to have started until now), but as far as Chiaki’s class or the Reserve Course, nothing too awful seems to have happened. Probably because Enoshima Junko wasn’t really around. Though of course that’s going to change pretty soon.
I was always under the impression that Enoshima was at Kibougamine this whole time, but I guess the reason why things still kind of seem okay is because she wasn’t really around. Yukizome’s class seemed to hold things together because of Nanami, Yukizome is allowed back, and even Komaeda might be allowed back. Things almost seem hopeful again. This still means that there’s probably going to be another time skip since Enoshima has to go through the events of Danganronpa Zero, so things might stay hopeful for a while. On the other hand though, this means that she entered Kibougamine at a really opportune time to spread despair since the general shadiness of the higher ups seems to be causing a lot of problems. The Reserve Course is probably just as depressing (especially since Yukizome didn’t seem to enjoy it at all) and the Kamukura project still seems pretty sketchy.
Overall though, Enoshima seems as crazy of a character as she was in Danganronpa, and even before she entered Kibougamine, she seemed to be planning the apocalypse. On the other hand, Ikusaba was petty dedicated from how she went along with her sister’s plan in Danganronpa, but her love of Enoshima seems to have been pretty extreme in the past as well. Seeing their interactions should be pretty interesting since they’re both going to be alive during the run of the anime, and both seem pretty wild from their first introductions in this episode.
Why the Ultimate Imposter is being Mitarai right now was explained. Rather than imitating Togami, which would probably be hard to maintain once Togami joins Kibougamine), being Mitarai makes a lot of sense if he just wants to stay at home all day and animate. This way they both get what they want, and nobody seems to have noticed that Mitarai gained a significant amount of weight from what he looked like before. …Though maybe since no one has really seen him because he hides out in his room all day, no one knows what he’s supposed to look like now. This does explain why Mitarai was present in the Mirai Arc with the Future Foundation though. If Mitarai never goes to school, then that would explain why he wasn’t drafted into the Ultimate Despairs. Or maybe his personality prevented him from being drafted since his whole thing in life was to create a hopeful anime.
On the plus side of this reveal though, you can kind of see the class’s trust for one another here since Imposter Mitarai trusted Tsumiki with his secret. Hopefully the rest of the class is this trusting of each other.
It totally looks like a shady experiment, but what could go wrong?
Finally, Hajime’s experiment is starting. There’s not a lot to say there since it hasn’t really happened yet, but I guess this is the conclusion he came to on how to live his life. It’s interesting that Nanami was part of what drove him to do this since he wanted to face her proudly, but Sakakura definitely seemed to be a deciding factor too. It should be interesting to see how the project goes before Enoshima influences it.
And once again, anime depicts someone in the production of anime as being really stressed out. Though in this case, that might just be Mitarai’s way of doing it since he seems like the type to push himself way past his breaking point. Overall though, this episode seems to be trying to make things seem hopeful again right before Enoshima comes to ruin everything for good. It should be interesting to see how she manages to drag everyone down to despair, but I’m still expecting things to go okay for a while because Danganronpa Zero events still need to happen.

Oh, good lord… THEY’RE HERE!! THE DESPAIR SISTERS HAVE FINALLY ARRIVED!! Now begins the descent to true despair. I had a small but enduring impression from these two from the first Danganronpa, mostly Junko, but wow, are they insane. Through their antics just upon reuniting, an unknown number of people got killed and the two not giving a care in the world.
So there was a compassionate imposter donning Mitarai’s identity while taking care of him. Good to know because it bugged me for a while seeing the attention pulling contrast of his in appearance between the Future and Despair arcs. Then I’m guessing whatever chaos Junko is about ignite forced him out of his shell.
In the end, Hajime’s decision to become a Guinea pig was influenced by the Sakakura douchebag. Seriously, I think I’ll have a satisfied sigh of relief in the Future arc when the time for his demise comes. I have a theory on what happened to Hajime but I’ll wait for a confirmation.
Overall, a setup episode preparing a domino effect for an unsuspecting cast. I’m eager to see what unfolds to such a degree that it negates and undoes everything Yukizome has done until this point.

It’s funny because in a side “what if” story for the first Danganronpa, Ikusaba actually defects from her sister/despair and allows everyone to get out from the school alive. Seeing her now, I just can’t imagine that ever happening.
But yeah… The imposter is compassionate now at least. He ends up being influenced by despair with the rest of Yukizome’s class.
It should be really interesting to see how everything falls apart. It’s been pretty precarious thus far, but things seemed to be getting better in this episode.

The interest will lie in by what means Junko gets it all done. It was an incident grave enough to consume the world.
Calling what Ikusaba has for Junko “extreme” is on point. After the limo scene, she shows she has absolutely no self-value. Like a disturbingly devoted servant who’d anything she’s told no matter what it may be. Also, I’m wondering what was going through the creator’s mind giving her the name “Mukuro”. That translates to either “Relic” or “Corpse”.

Humans always dabbling in things they shouldn’t. Look what happened when an experiment was tried in Seraph of the End/Owari no Seraph. It makes you ask when they will ever learn.
