Danganronpa 3: Mirai Hen – 07

Danganronpa 300023

Well, a lot of people have died, but look! The imouto power is still strong!

Oh hey look, all of the previous game’s plots are coming together. I wish they would focus more on what’s going on with Hajime’s group, but one thing at a time I suppose.

Komaru and Fukawa seem to be getting along well. I guess how they got so close, and how Fukawa became able to control Syo (Jill/Jack I guess if you’ve only been exposed to the official game translations) are things that aren’t going to be explained as much in the anime, but I guess the important thing is that it happened and Komaru and Fukawa are a team now. The episode didn’t explain everything that happened in the game, but at least for the most part, the basic plot was explained. Overall from where the last Danganronpa anime left off, some things haven’t changed (like Fukawa’s obsession with Togami), but at least Komaru kind of keeps Fukawa and Syo under control. Plus from her reaction to Komaru stopping her, Fukawa really does seem grateful for Komaru’s presence.

From what Komaru said though, the end of the war seems to be riding on Naegi to do something about it. I guess this ties in to how Monokuma stated at the beginning that this was going to be the end of his and Naegi’s story, and hopefully this anime ends with a resolution to this whole conflict of hope and despair that’s been going on.

Is everyone ready to accept the new overlord? …Nevermind.

So much for Monaka being the big bad guy of the season. Her giving up after surrounding Fukawa and Komaru was kind of pointless, but it also just seems to go with Monaka being Junko 2.0. Junko giving up on despair doesn’t seem likely, but the way Monaka just changed her plans because she got bored certainly seems more Enoshima-like. From how the other kids from the Warriors of Hope group were saying not to be too hard on her though, Monaka doesn’t necessarily seem like a completely bad kid. Komaru didn’t really want to hurt her either, so maybe everyone can be friends once Monaka comes back from space.

But at least the issue with Asahina’s fake death at the start of the season has been explained. After all of this, it really does seem like it was all just thrown in there for the shock value. However, assuming that Monaka was serious about her only being an observer, then someone else is running around and killing everyone for real (…aside from Munakata and friend of course). This would probably be whoever Tengan told Munakata was the traitor, but that’s a mystery for future episodes.

The pressing matter now is about who from Naegi’s survival group is going to die and why. From how things look now, it seems like Togami and Kirigiri are in the most danger. Or at least Kirigiri, since she’s on her own, Fukawa isn’t anywhere near the island, Hagakure’s death wouldn’t have the same impact because he’s the comic relief (plus he has no idea what’s going on), and Asahina already had a death scare. Togami seemed like he was in a precarious spot for a bit from how it seemed like Monaka lured him to the island through Gekkougahara, but since she’s out of the picture, maybe he’s not being lured there at all.

Not really a relevant image, but the Utena (probably) reference Togami was the best.

Not a lot really happened this episode in terms of discovering the point behind making everyone try to kill each other, but at least it was kind of revealed who isn’t behind it all. Taking Monaka out of the picture doesn’t really answer any questions, but removing fake Gekkougahara as a murderer makes things interesting since the actual murderer could be just about anyone now. Now that the characters have come together more (as in Togami heading to the island, and Komaru and Fukawa participating through Gekkougahara), maybe the characters and start figuring out who the killer is.

A few talks with Naegi and poor Monaka is all “What is the point? Hope will win anyway.”

Going by the episode’s title, this must be the “Ultimate Despair Girls” game section you mentioned in the earlier posts.

To be honest, I was rather indifferent towards Monoka. Yeah, there’s the feel of her being a thorn in the side but not the feel that she had the competence or resolve to carry out something the scale of what’s going on with the Future Foundation. I was a little worried for a moment, though. Seeing her casually playing that handheld video game and getting a good look at her face, I was beginning to wonder if there was a connection between her and Zetsubou-hen’s Chiaki Nanami.

As I thought, the mastermind is making it so the survivors from Junko’s killing game in the first Danganronpa come together in one place. Fukawa looks better grown up, by the way. With Monoka out of the equation, everything’s gone hazy again and thanks to the rising tension and bodies falling simultaneously, it’s going to be that much harder narrowing down the suspect and their intentions.

Based on what I saw in Zetsubou-hen, anyone heading to Jabberwock Island where they’ll meet a certain character will have serious trouble waiting for them.

I don’t think there’s much of a connection between Monaka and Nanami… If anything, I see Fujisaki from the first game in Nanami (though that largely has to do with the events of the second game).
